[SOLVED] Hard drive expansion options

Hello everyone,
I installed Arch on a 40GB hard drive I had laying around just to try it out. I have since decided to use it as my main OS. How would I go about expanding my storage onto a second physical hard drive (250GB)? Considering I already have Arch installed, is it possible for me to still use a LVM? When I run out of space on my 40GB drive, can I just change pacman's root installation directory to my second hard drive?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I have to look for a post which enlightened me about using LVM after you have installed Arch. I haven't actually done that. Let me go find that post.
Edit: Here it is: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1396753
Try out and let us know how it went. I have been meaning to look into it, but just haven't had the time.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes that is what I meant. Blocks has however caused an issue with GRUB. The details are located here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=180190
Edit: 1. Got Blocks installed.

    Hello,
    NB200 -00L is the model
Power was down during the beginning of hard drive reformat,I had tried to press 0 (zero) during restart
I had also tried to press F8 during it restart, then choose repair option, but it kept rebooting itself in a loop with no error message.
I really would like to restore to the manufacturing settings.
I had my usb drive, but the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
Unfortunately, my model does not come with a dvd reader neither.
    What are my options?

Everything for that Canadian model is here.
the system does not recognize the mirror image on my usb flash drive anymore.
I don't understand what's happening. If you cannot boot from a flash drive with recovery media, it may  be that the drive does not have the proper contents. You can remedy that by ordering a new flash drive from Toshiba.
See the section Restoring the pre-installed software from your created Recovery Media, which is on  p. 3-14 of your User's Manual.
If you cannot boot from a known bootable flash drive, I would seek service.

  • Hard Drive Replacement Option(s)..?

Will the following hard drive properly replace my WD5000BEVT-60A0RT0 500GB inside of my HP Pavilion g7-1070us :
Western Digital Scorpio Black wd5000bpkt 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136856).
My drive is working fine at this point in time which I am almost certain it's a 5400rpm drive.  I started to think about what I'd do if my hard drive fails.  It's good to be aware of my options in advance of any problem especially since the g7 is my one and only one computer.
My computer is exactly one year old as of the beginning of May 2012; therefore, the existing hard drive should be fine for a long while.  The faster rpm seems a choice replacement for any slight addition to its speed, although I fully realize that current consumption and other operating parameters are factors that have to be more professionally considered by someone more qualified than me about hard drive technology.  The link above includes specs and other information including an interesting comparison's pdf link towards the bottom of the webpage.
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards from Mark KF8RV.

    Hi, Mark:
    You are correct.
You only need to purchase the bare drive, and strip (reuse) all of the existing hardware (screws, caddy, interface connector to the motherboard (if applicable)) from the current HDD.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook which may come in handy when you want to replace your HDD.
Removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 4.

  • Toshiba Portable Hard Drive - no option screen

Bought a 1 TB automatic backup portable hard drive and connected to my computer running Windows 7.  I clicked on the exe file and lights blinked on computer and drive.  I thought all was well.  This morning, I attached the drive again and looked at the files backed up the day before.  Nothing except a 1KB login.ini file.  Nothing backed up.  I opened the users manual and saw that the screen giving the option to backup or restore never came up.  In fact nothing came up - just blinking lights.  What do I do?

I have same problem. I've never seen this screen either. I just plugged it in and it indicated it was doing daily automatic backup. I just discovered that I can't find any documents backup since the day I first plugged it in. Will check the warranty on the thing and try to get Toshiba to take it back.

  • External Hard Drive Partitioning Options

I recently purchased a new external portable hard drive for my mac.  It is the WD My Passport Ultra 2 TB version.  I looked up online how to reformat it for Mac's and read through the instructions.  Essentially, when reaching the part about partioning the disk within the Disk Utility app I want to select the Mac OS Extended option.  However, it is not there. Along with a few other options that I don't want to use, it shows Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Mac OS Extended (Journaled; case sensitive).  I understand that journaled offers more protection, but it is noted by a lot of the community that for photos and videos (and other media) the regular Mac OS Extended is much better (and that is what my use will be for).  Do you know where this option has gone and what I can do to get it back?
Thanks, please let me know, any help is appreciated!

    1. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) unless you have a reason to choose a different format.
    2. Yes.

  • External Hard Drive - Best Option

Anyone have any suggestions on the best solution for a 1TB external hard drive? I've been looking at either getting a Lacie Big Disk Extreme+ or buying an Icydock enclusure with a Seagate Barracuda Internal Drive. Both priced out about the same. Any thoughts on which would be better or another suggestion?

Reliability costs extra, because it requires redundancy. There's basically two options in the consumer price range: RAID (a technique requiring expertise and maintenance) or Drobo (a product designed to do what RAID 5 does without so much hassle).
Here's what Apple says about RAID, but it's much more trouble than it sounds:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1013.html
Here's what Apple says about Drobo, with a few reviews:

    Here's Drobo's Time Machine page:
    http://www.drobo.com/productstimemachine.aspx
The cheapest way to get a Drobo is with a $50 discount from podcasts like Tekzilla ( http://revision3.com/tekzilla/ ) or GeekBrief ( http://geekbrief.tv/ ). Otherwise, retail price only fluctuates by a few bucks:

  • Hard drive failure - options for data recovery and AppleCare coverage

I have been handed a relative's 12 month old MacBook Pro with a factory-installed 500GB hard drive which appears to have failed. When attempting to boot the MacBook I am met with the classic clicking and grating noise which I know is a tell-tale sign of hard drive failure. The drive will not boot and I am shown the question mark folder icon, indicating that the operating system cannot be found. Have booted into internet recovery mode, Disk Utility appears to have found no sign of the hard drive's existence and shows none of its partitions. I have attempted putting the MacBook into FW target-mode and mounting the disk from another laptop, but to no avail; while it will go into target mode the drive simply isn't visible. The SATA connection to the drive is definitely OK - I have tested with another 2.5 inch hard drive which showed up fine in Disk Utility and was bootable. Have run Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics but this returned no errors. It seems like a pretty clear cut case of drive failure.
I put this all to the relative whose laptop this is and asked them whether the MacBook had been dropped recently, explaining to them that this is one of the likeliest causes for such sudden failure. Sheepishly they admitted that they had indeed dropped it, although not from too great a distance and onto a carpeted floor. Apparently in the days immediately after the shock the hard drive continued to boot but the system was very slow and beset by spinning beech ball hangups. It is only in the last few days that the hard drive has become completely unbootable, and seemingly unreachable.
I have two questions that I would be grateful for some help with.
Firstly, is there any possibility of recovering data from this drive without going to a data recovery specialist? The user did have backups of most important data, but some recently imported photos were not backed up. Is it any use me trying any third-party data recovery software utilities, bearing in mind that I can't even mount the drive in target mode?
Second, the MacBook is still covered by the extended AppleCare warranty for the next two years. Is it worth my relative's while making a Genius Bar appointment to see whether Apple would replace this drive for free, given that the damage was most likely user-inflicted? Is there any chance that this sudden failure could be unrelated to the drop the MacBook suffered the other day - perhaps just a result of the 'normal' failure rate? I am more than happy to exchange the drive for a new one myself and my relative is happy to pay for the new part (I was amazed at how cheap hard drives are now), but would we be better off trying an Apple Store? My prediction would be that while we might get lucky and have an obliging genius who agrees to swap the drive without asking too many questions, we could also have one who concludes the damage is not covered by the warranty and insists on charging for the new hard drive (at a mark-up I assume) and labour.
Any thoughts about these two issues or the hard drive failure more generally are very welcome. Thanks.

1, Data recovery software is your only alternative if there is no backup. It may or may not be able to revoker anything from that hard drive. If it does then the only other choice is to go to a data recovery service. If have to go that route expect to pay for it, like $$$$.
2, Yes. They will at least tell him what the problem is and the cost if any to fix. There is a good chance they will fix it for nothing and only charge for data recovery if they can do it.

Can external hard drive be hooked up via USB and accessed through atv?
Not without voiding the warranty. No publicly available device is officially supported by that USB port.

  • Hard Drive Expansion/Upgrade

Choices, choices! I am rapidly filling up my stock Maxtor 250 GB hard drive, and I need to upgrade. I've read most of the posts in this forum, and see many potential ways to go. Hopefully, some of you experienced power users can give me some guidance.
    My needs/wants:
    - Extra capacity. I have a large collection of transparencies I’m scanning. I think my needs (for the next couple of years) will be met with around 350 GB of storage.
    - Backup. My (pathetic) backup routine has been to copy important data files to my Powerbook. I need a much more complete, robust, and systematic process for backup.
    - Performance. Not a priority, but would be a nice benefit.
    - Cost. Not a big deal, but I’d obviously like to save money if I can.
    - Heat dissipation. My office is not air conditioned, and gets hot in the summer (90°+). The heat doesn’t bother me, but am afraid of what it might do to an insufficiently cooled drive.
    - Space/clutter/convience. I prefer to keep all of my drives inside my G5, but will readily go with external drives if there are good reasons to do so.
Here’s what I’m currently thinking of doing:
Slot 1: Maxtor 72GB Raptor OS, applications (boot)
    Slot 2: Hitachi 7K500 backup
    Sonnet Tech G5 Jive
    Aux 1: Maxtor 7Y250M0 (stock 250 GB) data (RAID 0 drive 1)
    Aux 2: Maxtor DiamondMax 10/ 250 GB / 16MB data (RAID 0 drive 2)
Thoughts? Here are some of the things I’m wondering about:
    - Will there be any issues pairing my stock Maxtor with a newer 16 MB Maxtor 250GB in a RAID 0 configuration?
    - Will I have power or cooling issues with the G5 Jive and the RAID pair?
    - Where is the best place to buy this stuff?
    Thanks in advance!

MacGurus was always strong on SCSI, out of which the Burly came. Same with Seagate Cheetahs. Seagate may not be the fastest, but it usually is reliable and trouble-free regardless of chipset, controller, or OS. And some buy based on "quiet" or warranty. So you're right, they have.
Sonnet Tempo firmware has had trouble with Maxtor DM10/MLIII. Maxtor had a couple poor years, too, and the very first of the DM10 250GB models wouldn't even work on Macs. You could use a Maxtor utility on a PC, or RMA the drives. They also introduced staggered spin-up feature that doesn't work on all controllers, Sonnet had an issue with their 8-channel card and drives not showing up and RAID would keep failing. MacGurus carried Maxtor last winter, got burned, may come back.
Hitachi had a couple 7K250 models, noted on Barefeats, that had SSC and didn't work on SeriTek but would on Sonnet. The new 7K250 and T7K250 are fine. The 7K400 was not native SATA drive and also had SSC (OWC carries a non-SSC version of this drive, though the 7K500 is just plain superior now).
What has happened with SATA is a lot of changes being introduced and not everyone is on the 'same page' and 'qualifying' their equipment - the end user gets that job I guess.
No one ever lost a job in IT, the saying goes, for recommending IBM mainframes and DASD. Sometimes their mid-range and below wasn't the best, but once IBM was in a shop, they had great support and engineers to help you with your planning and upgrades - long-term commitment and relationship with a vendor, I could be sure of prices, support, and know the equipment.
A lot of people might be turned off by Granite Digital's SCSI costs. I swear by them (tried low costs solutions and threw them away) so I have a large investment in SCSI cables and such. Running four 15K drives, drive coolers, hefty PSU and fans, dedicated UPS.
IBM name took a big hit in storage, what with the 75GXP "deathstars" and poorer performance of their SCSI drives compared to Maxtor, Seagate (and Fujitsu but Fuji drives don't always work in FibreChannel and Mac systems I think). IBM still uses an extra platter as 'spare' so they can still map out bad blocks and get good yields, but their SCSI drives are hotter and louder than others) but any server farm is going to be in a noisy room where that shouldn't be a matter, and is climate controlled).
I keep my drives in a small, cool room - noise and heat are not a problem. Just like cooling an MDD, you look for how much air the fans in a case push, whether it has room for bay coolers, or has front and back fans, as well.
People want their external drive tower to be 'fashionable' and 'color coordinated' to their Gx Mac. I use to buy cases from www.hypermicro.com - CiDesign mainly because they are well made, metal, good cooling characteristics - but they have scaled back, harder to compete in today's market with cheaper products that can drive out even the good ones.

  • Ibook g4 and hard drive expansion

I have an ibook g4 that came with about 40 gb of space on the hard drive. needless to say that space is about all used up. I'm wondering how I can expand my hard drive without getting an external hard drive-- or is that the only method? I'm also fairly computer illiterate so if anyone could give me the basics on this I'd really appreciate it. I apologize if this is the billionth time this question's been asked.

It is funny you bring this up.. i am trying to do the same with one of my powerbooks.. apple told me they do not sell the internal drives nor will they put it in for you. so i asked "if i buy one myself and put it in will it still be under my apple care warranty?" they said if something fails because of the hard drive or install it will void the warranty onthe computer.. if i put it in and something fails that has nothing to do with the har drive or me installing it they would cover it..
Long story short, you will have to buy a internal off of ebay or the internet and put it in yourself or have another retail shop besides apple do it for you.
    hope that helps.

  • Hard Drive Expansion

What is the best solution for increasing the size of my hard disk on my mini? Is there a way to add an external and have it show up as part of the internal storage space?

    Joe,
I replaced the hard drive in my 2 year old mini yesterday. I was careful and it took me about 40 mins. I spent the most time making sure the case went on straight at the very end. I followed the instructions from ifixit.com as mentioned above:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-Model-A1176-Hard-Drive/11 08/1
These are very good instructions with photos of each step - just make sure you you choose the appropriate model.
I bought a 500GB replacement hard drive (only 5400rpm in my case). To start the process, I connected the new hard drive to the mini using a USB to SATA adapter and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old hard drive on to the new. http://www.bombich.com/ I checked it worked by booting from it before taking the machine apart and making the replacement.
    Good luck

  • A way to solve hard drive with slow read write speed

    Just to share.
Currently I am trying to upgrade my Mac Pro 2008, and replaced the 2TB startup disk with a 120GB OWC SSD.  After the OS installation, I started to move my photo library to a bigger 2 TB hard drive in Bay 2.
After completion, I started to import the photos to Aperture 3, but it crashed and failed to complete. I had a feeling that something wrong with my hard drive that holding the picture files, therefore, I tried to copy the disk to an external Firewire Hard Disk, the copy was very slow and showing an effective copy speed of 2 MB/s.
Disk utility, repair permission did not help and proved it was ok.
I did a Google search, and a Mac user suggested to use an Apple software called "TechTool Deluxe", therefore, I might as well have a try.
After a few tests, it did show up an error and asked me whether I would like to repair it, so I clicked Ok.
It took a second to repair and now the copy speed showing 50 MB/s.

Sounds like trouble with non system drive; with where the preference for where Aperture library is perhaps?
You have a couple backups of your drives in case you want to just update changes and reformat.
Is the old system drive and OS still around? might want to pull that. Eliminate confusion, cross-link of files or paths.
With SSD you want to clone and have a system image for restore - same as anytime, but even more so.
I've read but never understood the problems people have had with installing or cloning Mac OS to an SSD, but seems "real" nonetheless. And some problems with setting up Aperture was mentioned.

  • [solved] Hard drives continually spinning up (smartd polling?)

My system boots off a USB stick. Additionally, I have four hard drives configured as two RAID1 arrays:
    /dev/md/backup uses a Seagate ST31500341AS and a WD2003FZEX
    /dev/md/data uses a Hitachi HUA723020ALA640 and a WD2001FASS
Because these are seldom used, to save power, I have these configured to spin down after 20 minutes of inactivity. However, every half hour, the Seagate and Hitachi drives spin up, coinciding with smartd events in journalctl. For example,
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel changed from 65 to 66
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 35 to 34
    Jun 26 11:34:33 localhost smartd[2561]: Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 119 to 122
I do, however, have "-n standby" specified for all four drives in /etc/smartd.conf (see listing below).
Oddly, the WD drives remain spun down; just the Seagate and Hitachi drives are spinning up. I would like to avoid their spinning up every half hour (shortened lifespan and all that). One possibility is to increase smartd's polling interval, but that seems like more of a workaround. Does anyone have any better suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

Apparently, I had an uncommented DEVICESCAN in the middle of /etc/smartd.conf. Commenting it out and restarting smartd fixed the issue.

  • Optimizing hard drive expansion

    Hi Everyone,
On my Mac Pro I currently have my hard drives as follows:
Bay 1 - WD3200AAJS (supplied with machine from Apple)
+Running OS, applications and assorted games+
    Bay 2 - WD3200KS
+Running Time Machine and almost at full capacity.+
    Bay 3 - WD1500ADFD (Raptor)
+Running Windows XP Pro and assorted games.+
Given that my mac is used primarily for gaming how best should I expand my drives for optimum speed!
    1. Would it be worth raiding the two 320gb drives?
    2. I've read that the new WD640AAKS is worth a go so should I buy 2 and raid them?
    or
    3. Buy two WD6400AAKS drives and use one for Mac OS and the other for Windows and use the two 320gb drives purely for back up?
I'm really unsure as to which way to go with this so any help would really be appreciated.

A mac primarily used for gaming is like a hooker primarily used for lectures in quantum physics. All that nonsense aside, your gaming performance will be mostly affected by your graphics card. Check xlr8yourmac.com for reports but off the top of my head I think you can combine two 3870 graphics cards and run them together under windows. It won't match the best PC's for gaming but it's worth looking at and finding out if it can in fact be done. I doubt raiding and such will make a huge difference to gaming. Gaming is all about graphics card performance, assuming you have plenty of RAM.
