[SOLVED] HDMI audio not working on new TV

I got a new TV and I get no sound through HDMI from my arch htpc.
However, I don't think the problem is the TV because:
1) Audio from other hdmi sources works
2) When i connect the htpc to a monitor through hdmi and restart, the audio works. While still on, if I disconnect the monitor and reconnect the TV, the audio works through hdmi
It seems that the problem stems from auto-detection of the hdmi. I have also noticed that if i start the htpc unconnected to a display and then try to connect it after it has booted up, i get no video as well. Shouldnt hdmi cables be hot pluggable.
Any way to write out the auto detected configuration for audio and disable detection? Something like this should solve my problem
Edit: solution in post #5 bellow

Solved by adding monitor's EDID in xorg.conf. The steps to fix with an nvidia card are:
1) Connect device with which audio works (in my case the monitor)
2) run nvidia-settings and get edid file for the monitor
3) edit xorg.conf and add the following under the device section:
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/monitor.edid"
4) reboot or restart X
Sound works now through hdmi connected to TV

  • [SOLVED] HDMI audio not working (worked in Ubuntu)

    hi there,
I have very new hardware (Intel Core i5 2500, using the internal GPU) and already knew that it would probably take me a while to get everything working (especially the GPU). I first tried Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha with the xorg-edgers ppa, which already supported the new GPU, including 3D acceleration... unfortunately, it made my X server crash about every 15 minutes. Having heard about ArchLinux before I thought I should give it a try. Turned out the packages that I need for my GPU are only available in testing (xf86-video-intel 2.14, Mesa 7.10, Kernel 2.6.37), so I'm running on the testing repository right now. But I gotta say that I'm pretty impressed by ArchLinux, Compiz is working perfectly smooth and the whole system feels way faster than Ubuntu.
Now regarding my problem, I can't get my HDMI audio to work. Usually I would have said to myself "well, ALSA doesn't support it yet, I guess I'm gonna have to wait" . But the reason I'm writing this thread anyway is that it was working fine in Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha. In Ubuntu, I could use the alsa device hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=2 for HDMI audio. The strange thing is, this device doesn't exist on my ArchLinux system. Here is my "aplay -L" output.
    null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

In Ubuntu, I also had hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=1 and hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=2. So my question is, why are those missing on my system? Kernel and ALSA are the same version (2.6.37 / 1.0.23)!? I also already downloaded a Daily Snapshot of ALSA and did a ./configure, make, sudo make install - still no luck. And btw, DEV=0 outputs sound through my default speakers...

Nevermind, I fixed it myself. ;)

00-08 is the missing device I was talking about, aplay -L doesn't list it, but it's there. Anyway, I can use plughw:0,8 to use HDMI audio and it works fine, although I'm still confused about the difference betwenn plughw:x,x and hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=X...

  • HDMI Audio not working on Q190 (along with all higher level Audio Formats)

Help, I have been given the run around via support, I cannot get the HDMI audio to work with my Pioneer Surround Sound, only the Intel display audio shows in control panel (Win 8 X64) and the RealteK S/P Dif port and it is not capable of supporting 7.1 sound or bitstreaming or DTS, Dolby HD, Etc. Tec support appears not capable of fixing the issue and wanted to send me to software support and pay. I have only had the machine for 4 days and it has never supported higher level sound.
Every other device I have (had or currently) connected to the receiver works just fine. I have to figure this out or return the machine, the audio is the most important aspect for me. Besides when you advertise 7.1 support the machine you sell should be able to do it.

    Hey guys,
I have had this Q190 with the Celeron CPU since last week and I am using XBMC Frodo and the HDMI is connected to my AVR Onkyo TX-NR809 and from the Onkyo to the TV. And the sound is 7.1 with PLIIZ. It works fine. I think it may be some driver problem because Realtek Audio which is in the Q190 works fine with the Win8 preinstalled. Realtek is kind of bad with driver because I lost my wifi after upgrading to Win 8.1. After a few days with no wifi, I found out that the driver was bad, yes it was a Realtek wifi driver but posted by Lenovo for W 8.1.
I have another friend who also just bought the Q190 and he reported no audio problem so I think it is just a matter of trouble shooting the drive and configuration. I do love the form factor of the Q190.

  • [SOLVED] HDMI audio not functioning

I'm having trouble getting audio working. My setup is audio through HDMI, but I actually don't have a way to test audio through any other means, so I'm not sure if HDMI has anything to do with the problem.
My onboard video chipset is ATI Radeon HD 4250, and so I have added "radeon.audio=1" to my GRUB's boot entry, however nothing seemed to change. Where I seem to be stuck is that aplay will not pick up any sound devices:
    $ aplay -l
    aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...
From http://lkubuntu.wordpress.com/2011/07/2 … eshooting/ I was able to yield the following:
    $ lspci -nn | grep '04[80][13]'
00:14.2 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) [1002:4383] (rev 40)
01:05.1 Audio device [0403]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4200 Series] [1002:970f]
From some commands in the ALSA page at the wiki:
    $ lsmod | grep '^snd' | column -t
    $
    $ ls -l /dev/snd
ls: cannot access /dev/snd: No such file or directory
No idea why almost all of the commands I'm seeing are returning the opposite of what they should. Any ideas?

Thanks for your replies guys! Using both of your posts' information I was able to get HDMI audio working. Here's what I did:
    # modprobe -v snd-hda-intel

At this point I found a post that suggested reinstalling kernel26:

  • ATI HDMI Audio Not Working

Hi. I'm trying to get my ATI HDMI audio working. I've followed the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#HDMI_Audio and running "aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav" outputs no errors nor any sound on my TV. Adding radeon.audio=1 to my syslinux.cfg and rebooting results in no changes.
I have also followed the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … s_Not_Work which also resulted in no changes. One note though. When I select my HDMI sound card in alsamixer, there is only one sound bar shown entitled S/PDIF. I can mute or unmute it but not increase the volume from 0. No idea if this matters.
Also, I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm stumped and I would love to get this fixed so I can get xbmc working and fully drop windows.

I'm not entirely sure how I would go about doing that, or if I would need to considering the command I run to test the HDMI audio...
    aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
... is, I'm assuming, sending the sound directly through my HDMI due to plughw:1,3 specifying that. I put it as 1,3 after running aplay -l.

Computer recognizes HDMI port and video is working to TV. Trying to change to default in sound settings but won't change. When I test sound error message "failed to play test tone"

    Hi Kevin,
    See if this will help:
    1. Turn off both systems (TV and PC).
    2. Connect HDMI cable to the TV and PC.
    3. Turn on TV and select correct HDMI input.
    4. Turn on your PC.
Open "Control Panel , Sound". See if you can now select TV (HDMI audio) as the correct playback device.

  • HDMI audio not working

I recently purchased a LG LED LCD Tv to attatch to my PC via an Hdmi cable.  I have it all hooked up, and i get video to the tv... but there is no sound.  I have gone into sound options, and there is no HDMI option.  I have the show disabled and such checked... I have no clue what else to do.

  • [SOLVED]find command not working correctly new version of findutils...

After upgrading my findutils from 4.2.33-1 to 4.4.0-1, it is not working the way it used to. I downgraded to the old one and it is working fine again. However, I am wondering why the newer version can't do what I want it to...
Typically I run the following script to apply mp3gain to my music collection (albums and individual songs):
    #!/bin/bash
    echo Albums...
    find . -mindepth 3 -iname '*.mp3' -execdir mp3gain -k -a {} +
    echo Single tracks...
    find . -maxdepth 2 -iname '*.mp3' -exec mp3gain -k -r {} +
On the old version, for the albums, the "find" function works as expected by examining the entire album before applying gain. With the new findutils version, the albums are being analysed song-by-song. I suppose since the new version of findutils, there is just a different method to do what I wanted before with -execdir. Does anyone know how to do it on the new version?
    Last edited by tony5429 (2008-07-19 06:29:41)

Cool. Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up going with...
    #!/bin/bash
    echo Albums...
    for album in */*
    do
    cd "$album" > /dev/null 2>&1
    if [ $? = 0 ]
    then
    mp3gain -k -a *.mp3
    cd ..
    cd ..
    fi
    done
    echo Single tracks...
    find . -maxdepth 2 -iname '*.mp3' -exec mp3gain -k -r {} +
    exit 0

  • DVI to HDMI Audio not working

So I bought a DVI to HDMI and I'm trying to play movies off my laptop to my HDTV and when I try to change the audio output, it does not show HDMI output. I bought this macbook pro 15" in september 2009. Can anyone help?

There is no audio signal emitted from a 2009 MBP's Mini-DisplayPort. You will need to (a) make a separate audio connection between the MBP and the TV set, or (b) use a special adapter that combines a TOSLink or USB audio signal with the MDP video signal and feeds both into an HDMI cable:
    http://kanexlive.com/products/iAdapt51.html
    http://kanexlive.com/products/iAdapt20.html
Other vendors also offer similar adapters, perhaps at lower prices.
Audio output through the Mini-DisplayPort was introduced in the current MBP models, starting in April 2010.

  • [SOLVED] HDMI output not working

I just bought myself a home theater system but can't get my laptop to connect to the reciever.
My laptop is an Asus UX31E with integrated HD 3000 graphics. When I connect a HDMI cable to the reciever (Pioneer VSX-527) it doesn't even detect my laptop. If I go into the Cinnamon/GNOME display settings, it doesn't even show that I'm connected to an external display.
In pavucontrol I'm able to select the HDMI as an output, but it doesn't play any sounds on the reciever (which plays just fine from radio, so at least the speakers are connected correctly).
    What to do?

    Hi:
The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the graphics driver from AMD if you have not already done so.
Your notebook is not supported by HP for W7, and especially not supported for 32 bit operating systems.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/mobile?os=Windows%207%20-%2032
As a last resort, try manually installing the W7 x64 graphics driver from your notebook's support and driver page (sp66999).
I explored the driver folder, and there are 32 bit drivers included in that file.

  • HDMI audio stopped working on new 2010 Mac Mini

I am running snow-leopard server. I have the HDMI connected to a Pioneer Elite SC-27, then via HDMI to a Panasonic Plasma TV. I get the digital picture feed just fine on the TV, but there is no audio. I checked the audio settings, SC 27 is selected as output.
Audio was running fine earlier today... just stopped working. Anyone else experience bugs with the HDMI out audio?

Try shutting down the computer and turning off the receiver and tv.
Take out the HDMI cable and swap the ends and make sure it's seating fully in both ports.
Then turn on the receiver and tv.
Then power on the Mini and immediately hold down these 4 keys on the keyboard: COMMAND OPTION P R
Hold them down until the computer chimes 3 times.
See if that resolves the problem.
If it doesn't, I would try another HDMI cable.
