[SOLVED] how do i get laptop volume control to function?

Question

On my toshiba laptop, my sound "works" however the rotary volume control at front of the laptop does not affect the volume. When I turn it the volume bar appears on the display but nothing happens. This used to work but I have been "playing" with my arch system to try and gain knowledge of arch et.al and now I have broke something and cannot remember how to revert back.
I am running kdemod(4.2). SystemSettings->Multimedia shows four "cards":
HDA Intel ALC268 (analog)
HDA Intel ALC268 (digital)
Esound (ESD)
HDA Intel ALC268 (IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output)
p.s. I can only get sound of the Analog device. The "test" button doesnt do anything with the other devices selected.

eh ?? how is a volume control 'set' to the analog card?
