I have a Pavilion DV7 4320EL. I know that it has a second slot to add a second HDD or SSD, but the connector can't be found. Someone knows where it is?

    Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

    When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same.     Alright everyone, this is my story....
    Had Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
    Purchased Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
    Perfomed a clean install of Win7 (I did not delete recovery partition)
    I learned that you cannot simply perform a clean install of whatever OS you want on your laptop....the HP Media software that went along with my dv7 would not install on my new installation of Windows 7.  It would extract the files and then nothing would happen, the installer would not run at all.  GREAT.
    I then thought about restoring to Vista using the recovery partition.  When I pressed F11 at boot up it would just take me to the Windows boot menu and the option of booting inti my windows 7 installation.
    After much reading and disgust with HP (primarily for MARRYING their pre-loaded software with their pre-loaded OS) I found out that you need to mark the recovery partition as your "ACTIVE PARTITION"
    Right click on Computer -> Manage.
    Go to Disk Management
    Find your recovery partition and right click on it.  Choose "Mark Partition as Active".
    You will get a warning message about your system wont boot if no bootable OS files are in this partition, click on OK/Yes and continue.
    Now reboot Windows 7.
    Press F11
    Ta-da!  It's recovery mode loading
    Once Recovery Manager loads you can follow the steps to restore your OS to it's original manufacturer state.
    Now I have not gotten to the state of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit installation and if it works with the media software.  I am currently typing this up as the Win7 "upgrade" setup is moving along.  I will post my results.
    I hope this helps someone out there in the convoluted world of HP OS recovery.

    not sure what you are trying to achieve...
    However you should not be referring to Luns via their logical device i.e. c0t0d0, but using the unique did device or the /global device. refer to scdidam -L which will list all the did devices across all nodes and map them to the logical device path.

    When I look at the ports in the back there is only one VGA port but no DVI port. There are about 4 USB ports one 1394 style port and an RCA video and audio jack labeled Input ( there is also a set on the front also showing as input) . Can any of these be used to add a second monitor. There is also a jack that looks like its for a telephone in green. and some various audio output jacks. As of now I havn't purchased a second monitor due to needing to know what ports it should have to connect with this computer. If it can't be done I will save my money.

    To be honest, I would not spend more money to this machine, this may end up cost more money than to buy a new machine (w/o monitors - assuming you already have 2 monitors).

    I would not use a SSD for a second drive, there is really no benefit to this, an SSD would be much better for the primary hard drive where the OS runs from.
    Any standard laptop Sata hard drive will work
    You would need a hard drive hardware kit, includes bracket, shield, screws, and data cable.
    I would contact HP parts to be sure you get the correct part(s) for your specific model
    Here is your service manual which has instructions on how to replace hard drives in that model

    Firstly, find if you want SATA or IDE.  Then make sure you have a free hole on the mobo for the drive, and spare in the case for it.  Then make sure your PSU can power it.  Then decide how much space you want and how much you want to pay.  Then buy, screw it in, and connect the ribbon cable and power cable.  Then boot, and it should come up in /dev.  Then partition, and make a filesystem, then mount.  Easy

    Well, it was easy when one need to add a virtual disk before creating a guest VM. All need to do was to edit the template and click on disk tab and create a virtual disk.

    How can I determine what is the URL in my case?
    Where is the newly created virtual disk located? Isn't it supposed to be in Oracle Server? But it doesn't have  a http server running there.

    Virtual disks can only be added and removed at runtime from a PVM. You don't even need to know anything special. Just create the vdisk and use the VMs settings to occupy another slot with the new vdisk.
    But as I said… this works only with PVMs, not HVMs. In case of a HVM, you will need to shut down the VM and add the disk afterwards, then fire it back up.
    The little folder with the blue down arrow is for importing an existing vdisk file from a web- or ftp server. If you have already created the vdisk, you won't need that.

    I am resurrecting a friend's macbook. In the process of upgrading to Snow Leopard, the DVD drive quit. The install never finished and on boot it was showing the grey and black "please restart your mac" screen.
    I used disk utility to repair the disk but it still booted to the error message. I erased the HD and was able to get it to boot using an install on a firewire drive, but I haven't been able to install it on the macbook HD.
    I created disk images for each disk and put them on separate partitions on the firewire drive. I was able to install Tiger on her HD all the way to the "insert second disk" message, but don't know how to switch to the other partition where the disk 2 install is.
    The original Tiger install is on the two disks that came with her computer. The Snow Leopard is the retail version on one DVD.
    Any ideas?

    Unless you can boot your computer from Tiger then you cannot install Tiger via Target Disk Mode onto the other computer. You need to get an external DVD drive for the non-working computer or you can clone the installer DVD to an 8 GB flash drive and boot the computer using the flash drive via OPTION boot.
    You can put both DVDs on a 16 GB flash drive that has been partitioned into two volumes.
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
           it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the flash drive. Source means the installer DVD. If you wish to put both DVDs on a 16 GB partitioned flash drive, then the destinations will be a volume on the flash drive.

    Reason enough IMO. But anyway... you refer to the Traditional build method in the wiki, but is it possible you didn't really read it? Or maybe you only skimmed it? Did you run make menuconfig? Did you try to build everything in instead of using modules? That mkinitcpio output suggests that you did.
    As suggested there for first-timers, it's a good idea to start with a kernel configuration that is known to work - the Arch config is the obvious choice, but there are other sources e.g. http://kernel-seeds.org/ .

    In my case I have two wired LAN cards. I use Arch network daemon to manage my NIC's.

    but doing so in arch wont connect to router/gateway.

  • Add a Second Hard Drive to a Pavilion 500-314 Desktop

    I have just purchased a Pavilion 500-314 desktop and desire to add a second SATA hard drive from the computer it is replacing.  When I open the case I find four SATA connections but nowhere to physically mount the second hard drive.  The drive bay is large and basically empty with the included hard drive mounted to the drive bay cage.  There are no slots for additional drives.  When I called HP I was told this chassis supports only one drive even though it has four SATA connectors on the motherboard.  Is there an adapter that can be purchased to create additional slots or am I out of luck with additional internal drives?
