[Solved] I have more cpus than I should have...

I'm running Arch on an Intel Atom processor, which to my knowledge only comes in packages of single or dual core. However, I notice that in /sys/devices/system/cpu there are four folders, one for each "core". Also, in conly-cli, the method in which I found out about this, it showed my top four applications, the highest of them being Folding@Home. I expected F@H to be around 50%, but instead it's only stayingat 25%, which is how I found out that Arch is seeing four cores.
I'm wondering if anyone knows why this is happening, and if there's a way to going back down to just two cores.
(I remember reading something about virtualizing cpus to make them do double the load per core, and appear as two cores)

Yeah, a friend of mine reminded me tht Atom 330's use hyperthreading, of which I was completely unaware of. A quick checkup on this, and I've realized that leaving it asis is better for my system.
... I'm still annoyed that I had some CPU cycles left on idle, even when I thought I was taking advantage of them...

Movie files take up more space than they should

Hi! I'm new to iDVD, and I wanted to take about 20 .mp4 files and put them on a DVD that a DVD player hooked to my TV will be able to read. The combined size of all the files is under 4GB and will fit on a burnable DVD. But when I drag them into iDVD, it only lets me have like 5 before it says it is full. Why is this happening? Why should the video take up more space than the file's actual size? If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

iDVD works on time and NOT on RAW file size!!
All video is converted to MPG-2 by the encoding process in iDVD. With a single layer disc, you can get UP TO 60 minutes of content in Best Performance mode and UP TO 120 minutes in Best Quality mode.

I wouldnt say that they are throwing at&t under the bus.. It will just keep at&t honest about where the weak spots are. I would say that they are showing a "truer" signal than was previously shown. Granted my personal opinion like in my previous post.. my best dBm level i've ever seen on my BlackBerry was -70dBm which was full 5 bars. but according to apples new software that 70dBm is within the "5 bar" limit. altho its much closer to the 4 bar section. So realistically should the blackberry have shown 4 instead of 5? Im curious to see if any former blackberry users like myself are able to mention if they have ever had lower than a -70dBm reading on their berry and how their new signal on the iPhone 4 matches up. I usually display the same level signal (with 4.0.1) as i did with my bold 9000. There are some locations that i will show 3 bars where it used to be 5 - but its a very reliable 3 (even had data rates in the 4000kbps down/2400kbps up) in the 3 bar range. So i'm very pleased.

Camera takes more memory than it should

I deleted a load of music and photos to update to the ISO 8 and half way through the update it cut out and restarted my phone
found out the reason it stopped was because i don't have enough memory on my phone (which I did before the update)
the culprit seems seems to be my camera roll. All I have is 284 things in it (inc vids and pics) and that takes up 4.1gb of memory. I can't remember what the memory was before it cut out but it can't have been that much because I was able to initially start the update
is there anything I can do without connecting to iTunes on my laptop as my laptop is broke and if I plug my iphone into my girlfriends then my phone will be wiped (that's what I presume anyway as it happened before)

That MacBook Pro should be plenty of power for iMovie. However, she will likely need an external drive to hold her Events.
Assuming that she has a high definition AVCHD camcorder, the camcorder will record in a highly compressed format called AVCHD. It will about 1 full frame of high definition video per second. The rest of the frames contain information like "what has changed since the last frame?", what is the direction of motion?, etc.
This is great for capture, but not so good for editing, because you might want to edit starting at one of the compressed frames.
When you import AVCHD to iMovie, it converts all the frames into full frames. This way you can edit any frame without a big load on the processor. This means that when you import, the file size will be about 10x bigger than it was on the camera.
She will need an external drive. It must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled). You can buy them off the shelf like this, or you can buy a FAT32 drive and reformat it with Disk Utility.
I recommend that you start with a 1TB drive that connects with Firewire 800, FW400, or USB.

ADOBE AN ABSOLUTE DISCGRACE OF A COMPANY TAKING MORE MONEY THAN THEY SHOULD OFF MY ACCOUNT EVERY MON

I have been having major issues with my Adobe Creative Cloud Account. The problem started when I had a normal subscription, then upgraded to Team for additional space. Due to changes in my team I reverted back to normal subscription 3 months later. I had hoped that I could just update my monthly subscription to one subscription... but No!! Adobe said I couldnt restart my normal subscription and I had to start a new one, so I did. I then tried to cancel my Team subscription and they say every month that they have. Yet every month I still get charged for it along with my new and old normal subscriptions. (3 CC Payments per month)
I have tried cancelling my Adobe Creative Cloud Subscrition for 5 months. Time and time again Adobe keep saying that its cancelled and every month I get charged. I have to go through support and battle for refunds and spend hours of my time speaking to overseas support operators going over the same stupid things.
Adobe support is hopeless and I have raised over 10 support cases to sort this and well over 15 hours of my time to rectify the situation. Time and Time again Adobe escalate it, say they have fixed then every month I get billed for my Team on the 8th of the month then billed for 2 x normal subscriptions on the 18th of every month.
It has now got to the stage that I am sick of support and I need to look at alternatives to sort this. My bank cant cancel it because it is not a direct debit or a standing order. Adobe has my card details and it lies with them to cancel it. The only option the bank said I can choose is to cancel my cards.
Adobe Can you please cancel my Adobe please. I wish to cancel everything as I have had enough.

Did Adobe use a similar approach of "If a customer has a problem please "provide" (post) a helpful response." I mean come on, my comment was in direct correlation to the topic at hand, the customer tried conventional methods and Adobe failed repeatedly and miserably by conventional methods. The customer then caused public noise, Adobe wanted no bad PR and finally took action. 14 support tickets over 5 months before posting on a public forum and "finally" getting help? So is that considered a professional approach to "customer support" by a corporation dealing with its "flagship" offering to a customer? This is not the first instance of this either, one merely has to search the forum to find similar issues regarding similar situations.
This is what is considered by Adobe as "A customer has a problem and providing help?" Really, 5 months and 14 support tickets, then needing to post what should be a private business matter publicly on a public forum for resolution?

Hard Drive More Full Than It Should Be

Hello all,
I am having a very strange problem with my iMac and OS X Lion. When I look at all the folders in 'Macintosh HD' and add up their sizes I get 332.08gb. However when I look at 'Get Info' for 'Macintosh HD' I have 735.64gb used! That's a 403.56gb difference, and I have no idea what is seemingly taking up the extra space. I've done all the usual things like emptying trash and running a maintenance program and repairing disk permission etc.

My wife's new macbook Air is having same problem. I can't upgrade to Lion because only 2.5Gb free and I can't find a tool to help me clean up the hard drive and in fact can't even understand why it is full.
We are new converts to Apple from Windows and I bought her the Mac Air laptop (brand new) about 3 month's ago. It has a 60Gb hard drive and we haven't installed any additional apps except Open Office for the Mac.
This is my wife's computer, she is virtually computer illiterate and uses it for emails and web browsing to communicate with children overseas. So we haven't installed or downloaded any huge amounts of data, games or anything. We did synch with her iPad which had a lot of photos on it and iPhoto appeared to fill the hard drive with them which I thought was really wierd because the iPad is only 20Gb I think. I deleted all the photos from the Mac Air and then removed all the HD photos from her iPad (They seemed to duplicate themselves when imported into iPhoto) and as many other photos as I could and then resynched.
I've checked sizes of folders and especially the Library Folders. The Library\iPhoto folder is now less than 5Gb. I've emptied the Trash and checked other App folders, Document folders etc and they only add up to lessthan 20Gb yet when check the info on Hard drive, still only about 2.5Gb free. I suspect it hasn't fully deleted all the photos but Trash is empty and I'm now at a loss how to fix.
Perhaps there is something else using up the space, but I cannot find it.
I simply cannot find any standard tools to help free up all that hard disk space that should be there.
Can any one help me please? Surely Apple has some basic utilities to help me clean up my disk and what others steps should I take to find out why the disk is full, and then what can I do to clean it.

Well, I have an iPod mini & I have 149 songs on my iTunes, but it says its taking up 3.04 GB I pretty sure it shouldn't, but does anyone know if this is normal and if I can fix it? I don't have any artwork or anything either.

You might want to convert them all to Apple Lossless instead of MP3's or WAV's or whatever. I haven't noticed any loss of sound quality on any of my music and the files are really compact. Worst case is at some point in the future, I go back and reimport my CD's if I think the sound quality's then better. Also - when you do that - convert - it'll have two copies of the songs in your library. The original & the converted version. You can either leave them both showing in your iTunes library, or move the larger versions out to another location. Just have the library show you duplicates, add a column for size or type, and select the larger versions & click Delete. It'll ask you if you want to send the files to the recycle bin or leave them on your hard disk - that's your call. I'd probably be inclined to leave them all right there - if you need the bigger copy at some point, just navigate to the folder in your iTunes folder using Windows Explorer or similar and you'll see both versions. But iTunes and your iPod will only see the more compact converted versions.

[solved] Linux headers more recent than kernel

I went to upgrade today and saw that linux-api-headers were in the list of upgrades. I thought this was odd since the kernel wan't in there also. I checked and the kernel is still in testing, while the api headers have been moved to core. It just didn't seem safe to run the run the upgrade. Am I worrying about nothing?

What's the output of
pacman -Si linux linux-api-headers | grep Version
With my current mirror I get
Version : 3.17.6-1
Version : 3.16.2-1
so the headers are trailing the kernel for me. I'm inclined to believe that this is a problem worth reporting on the bug tracker, but I don't know enough to say for sure.
For reference, the latest committed PKGBUILDs are for versions 3.18.1 and 3.18, respectively.

My iPhone states it has more songs than it should

Iphone 4Gs - 16GB latest IOS6
Itunes 11.01 (12) on Imac running 10.8.2
Everytime i sync Itunes seems to add all my 'purchased' songs to the Iphone which i do not want it to do. Its not 'checked' on the Imac itunes to do so.
I sync a playlist called top 1000 to sync based on the top 1000 most played songs.
My phone and Itunes states there a 1178 songs on the iphone. where are the 178 extra songs and how can i stop them being on the phone.
I have checked what they are and they are all songs i have bought via the phone on itunes but are not on my top 1000 playlist. how can i delete them from my phone. they are already on my imac so i don't need them there.

Flash (npviewer.bin) uses way more cpu than it should

When I watch flash videos in firefox, npviewer.bin goes up to around 15%. If I full-screen, it uses ~90%. When I download the exact same video and watch it in mplayer, it consumes only 6%.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? Or, are there any alternatives to using flash to view videos?

I've been working around the issue for now by downloading the videos and watching them with mplayer, but this is impossible for many live streams.
I have an ATI Radeon 5650, and am using the Catalyst drivers.
Edit: this may be unrelated but I get the following warning when npviewer is running:

"Safari can't cnnnect to the server" less often than it should

Very recently, I've had increasing difficulties acccessing certain sites, which respond with a "Safari can't connect to the server." However, when I use a different Mac, there's no problem connecting.
This is a big problem when going to an official site like MacUpdate or Versiontracker. If I try to download, say, a demo of iDefrag, I frequently get the error message. But it happens more frequently than it should with simple web surfing on sites (like http://www.jdorama.com/) I know are online.
Aside from the recent Security Update, the only major change in my system has been that my ISP bumped my DSL speed from about 1.6mb/s to 2.1mb/s.
What might be causing this problem?

Thanks. My hunch is your settings need some refinement. Try these suggestions in your System Preferences> Network panel (I'm assuming you are using the TCP panel for your IP address etc.)
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
- Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
- Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked, unless you use a Bluetooth device.. Move Ethernet to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
- Back to the "Show" menu, select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.
Give these a try and let me know if you see any improvement.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Did you delete all receipts with iDVD in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder before installing the new copy? If not then do so and delete the new application also.
