[SOLVED] i915 kernel module depends on acpi

I have a couple old desktops circa 2005 with Pentium 4s that I've been using to drive monitors in an Xdmx setup. Anyway, I've been using the VESA driver, but I'd really like some hardware acceleration, so having the actual intel driver would be nice--that's where the problem arises.
i915 won't load because it depends on button (ACPI_BUTTON) and button fails to load with
No such device
From what I can tell, it's because my machine doesn't fully support ACPI. Is there any way around this?
I've googled and read countless pages, tried every order of every module I read about in mkinitcpio and the bootloader. acpi=force, i915, intel_agp etc. So I'm wondering if there's a version of i915 that doesn't depend on button or perhaps a way to fake it somehow.
Thanks!

Hmm, I just did an update and it looks like xorg-server-1.17.1-3 just broke everything. It seems to want to use the modesetting driver now that it's bundled with xorg-server. I downgraded back to 1.16.3-2 and I at least have VESA support back. It looks like the progression of X (ha) is deprecating my old hardware even further. The fact that it used to work makes me cling to some hope.

I already had this trouble before and this was the fix
    # modprobe vboxdrv
    But it doesn't work anymore
    Any ideas?
Edit: This just get fixed by itself when restaring my PC. Sorry

  • [SOLVED] Loading Kernel Modules with Options

    Hi,
I am trying to load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module on boot. I followed the Arch Wiki's article on kernel module loading [0] and created a file in /etc/modules-load.d/ called nf_conntrack_ftp.conf:
/etc/modules-load.d/nf_conntrack_ftp.conf wrote:# Load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module at boot
    nf_conntrack_ftp
This loads the nf_conntrack_ftp module on boot just fine; unfortunately the module uses the default FTP port (21) and I need it to run on a different port (6621). When I try to dynamically load nf_conntrack_ftp using modprobe nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621 it loads just fine and according to systools has the port set correctly. However, if I try to set the port anywhere in /etc/modules-load.d/ I always get an error message during boot saying:
Failed to start Load Kernel Modules. See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details.
Looking at the systemctl status message as recommended by the error message on boot doesn't yield anything useful:
    systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service wrote:
    systemd-modules-load.service - Load Kernel Modules
       Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-modules-load.service; static)

         Docs: man:systemd-modules-load.service(8)
               man:modules-load.d(5)
      Process: 287 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
    Main PID: 287 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
    Feb 09 16:46:13 babylon5 systemd[1]: systemd-modules-load.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Feb 09 16:46:13 babylon5 systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
    Feb 09 16:46:13 babylon5 systemd[1]: Unit systemd-modules-load.service entered failed state.
I have tried to set the "ports=6621" module option in multiple ways ...
    1. As part of the same nf_conntrack_ftp.conf file in /etc/modules-load.d/:
    /etc/modules-load.d/nf_conntrack_ftp.conf wrote:
    # Load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module at boot
    nf_conntrack_ftp
    options nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621
    2. As a separate test.conf file in /etc/modules-load.d/:
/etc/modules-load.d/nf_conntrack_ftp.conf wrote:# Load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module at boot
    nf_conntrack_ftp
    /etc/modules-load.d/test.conf wrote:options nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621
    3. I even tried just adding "ports=6621" to the end of the nf_conntrack_ftp.conf file in /etc/modules-load.d/:
/etc/modules-load.d/nf_conntrack_ftp.conf wrote:# Load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module at boot
    nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621
None of these worked. The moment there is "options nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621" in any file in /etc/modules-load.d/ I get the error message on boot and the kernel module won't get loaded.
What am I missing / doing wrong? Is it not possible to set kernel module parameters on boot? Does nf_conntrack_ftp need to be loaded by the initramfs, i.e. do I need to add the modconf hook to my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf?
    Thanks,
    Marek

Read this again, specifically the section about setting options, paying close attention to directory names.
D'oh! Thanks for pointing that out, what a stupid oversight on my part:
The files that tell the system which kernel modules to load go into /etc/modules-load.d/.
The files that tell the system which parameters to pass to the kernel modules when loading them go into /etc/modprobe.d/.
Now that each file is where it belongs everything works.

  • [SOLVED] Loading kernel modules: 'Invalid module foramat'

    Hi.
I installed latest driver for my VIA video card. The driver is for Ubuntu and SuSE, but I successfully installed it and the files are at place. I changed the driver in my xorg.conf file and it is working, but I am not able to load 'drm' 'via-chrome9'and 'via-agp' kernel modules. The output message says "Invalid module format". These modules are working on Ubuntu. Is there something I can do to make them work.
    Regards.

You cannot use packages compiled for Ubuntu's kernel with Arch's kernel.  You'd have to recompile it against our kernel

Do you have any idea of what should be done to fix it? I don't want to use NVIDIA driver from their site neither nouveau, I want to use the one from the repo. If you know how to solve it, instead of only pointing the solution, also tell why this is happening, it will help me and other people with the same problem too!
If you need additional information please ask me.
    Thanks!!

As it's mentioned, it may be a problem of ACPI.
About the lib32-nvidia-utils, I just installed because it's written in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing: "Note: On 64 bit systems, For 32-bit programs to take advantage of nvidia-utils you must also install the equivalent lib32 package (for example lib32-nvidia-utils)."

  • Kernel doesn't log ACPI events: ACPI module or Bios corruptions

Well, this is very strange and i dunno where to look at to solve this:
My new NP530U3C (Samusung ultrabook)is running Arch and i'm currently using acpid to trigger the acpi events couse i have no DE (fluxbox).
I can't understand the way my kernel and acpid log the LID event:
    Kernel.log
    Oct 6 20:06:46 localhost kernel: [ 2.105259] ACPI: Lid Switch [LID0]
    Oct 6 20:44:31 localhost kernel: [ 2.111136] ACPI: Lid Switch [LID0]

Oct 6 23:33:40 localhost logger: LID closed
Oct 6 23:33:48 localhost logger: LID opened
When i close the lid, i have to wait 10 sec approx to trigger the LID close event and start the suspend action!
on wakeup i don't know because my samsung can wakeup only with the power button (no lid in wakeup events).
    So somebody can enlighten me?
    *EDIT <-----
I can summarize it is a corruption of the Bios/ACPI module that affect this laptop after a certain suspentions circle (I mean not every first suspentions).
I would like to debug in a better way but i have no instruments to investigate:
If someone can point me to a way to debug this stuff like Bios corruptions and/or Kernel module failure...
    Any advide is appreciated

well, is a samsung ultrabook! i'm doing some m ore tests and still 10 sec delayed!
    a note:
when the kernel log the LID state i can suspend instantly after i really close the LID.
after a reboot, and halt/start thigs doesn't changes....
The kernel logger resume after some reboots or *resetting* (using a needle to click a button above the laptop close to the battery) the laptop <-- this method was whrote somewhere and i tried it, and solved sometinms the issue for 2/3 days.
is starnge because it appears without any regularity, but i'm not so pro and is difficult for me to figure out what can trigger the event!
    EDIT
    Oct 7 00:21:58 localhost kernel: [ 686.653890] psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 6
    Oct 7 00:21:59 localhost kernel: [ 686.668774] psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 - driver resynced.
dunno if is important, but after a resume from suspend, i got this messege. i thought it was only after it (like a little error in the resume hooks) but no i'm noticing it in  the messages.log every how

  • [Solved] (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.

fglrx has just recently stopped working, and I can't quite pinpoint when that was because I honestly hadn't noticed until checking.  I've tried a few reinstalls and different xorg options so far, but had no luck.

Would it be possible to explain the other warnings in Xorg.0.log?  Rather curious about those apart from the obvious one, too.
    Thanks.

Indeed, that seems the end-all error of it all.
I'll summarise my warnings, some for curious reasons:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) # What's this?
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found # Not a problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Only one display is connnected,so single mode is enabled # No problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
    (WW) fglrx(0): ***********************************************
    (WW) fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed! *
(WW) fglrx(0): * (maybe driver kernel module missing or bad) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * 2D acceleraton available (MMIO) *
    (WW) fglrx(0): * no 3D acceleration available *
    (WW) fglrx(0): ********************************************* *
Anyway, I wondered about versions and noticed this:
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.0
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] created "fglrx" driver at busid "PCI:1:0:0"
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 8192 byte SAREA at 0xbc000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xbc000 to 0xb7285000
    (II) fglrx(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xbd000
(II) fglrx(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
    (II) fglrx(0): DRIScreenInit done
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
    (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
    (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.37.6
    (II) fglrx(0): Date: May 25 2007
(II) fglrx(0): Desc: ATI FireGL DRM kernel module
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver. # included to show where this was displayed
All versions previous to that show 8.38.6:
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
    compiled for 7.1.0, module version = 8.38.6
    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
So I assume I have an old version dotted around somewhere, but I'm not sure about how it's all loaded and such.
Now, quoting something I'd come across a few times and taking it from thinkwiki:
If you lose hardware acceleration after a driver update this can be caused by an old fglrx kernel module being loaded.
Check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a message like:
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
You can verify this yourself by looking at the version message some lines above. It should read something not matching the installed version like:
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
        (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
        (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.10.19
The cause for this trouble might be that there resist multiple versions of the fglrx module within the kernel module search path.
Go to /lib/modules/<your linux kernel version>/ and type # grep fglrx modules.dep.
If grep finds multiple lines you nailed down the problem. All you have to do now is to delete any versions of the module (look at the filedate) but the most current one. Then run # depmod and you are done.
    Hint:
Newer versions (8.21.7) of the fglrx module seem to be installed in the extra/ subdirectory.
Older versions (8.19.10) used to be located in the kernel/drivers/char/drm/ subdirectory.
How does this apply to Arch?  I only found one instance of fglrx by using that method.
Edit: Forgot to add that I've tried reinstalling a few times, it doesn't really seem to do anything.  Wondering if I should attempt to install an older version or something, but I don't get why the driver numbers don't match for me.  Surely others have updated their drivers too.

  • VFAT kernel module won't load [SOLVED]

I'm running kernel version 3.7.5 and after the update that got me to that version, it appears to have completely borked VFAT and kernel modules in general. My system still runs fine, but the vfat module is missing and cannot be loaded with modprobe or insmod. Oddly, the kernel object exists in /usr/lib/modules, yet my system seems to be ignoring it. Upon further investigation, it appears that it is impossible to load or remove ANY modules using modprobe or insmod. I recently did a reinstall of Arch, following exactly the steps in the Beginner's Guide, if that makes any difference.
Help? Please? I need the vfat module loaded before I can compile a custom kernel (my next big project)

Yep, I got that far, and tried the same advice from a different user with a 'tee' command which did the same thing, but unfortunately the forcedeth module can't be loaded because its in a different directory than the 'uname -r' specification allows modprobe to search for. I posted my attempts here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1181940

  • [SOLVED] nVidia 87.76 Drivers installer fails to build kernel module

    Hey,
I have a nVidia GeForce2 Integrated graphics card on my Asus A7N266 motherboard. According to the nVidia site, http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html, the most recent driver that supports this is the 96.xx series. Yet as shown here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87332, many people have found that the 96.xx series drivers cause graphical corruption when using a GeForce2 IGP.
Before coming to Arch, I had used Xubuntu 7.04 and managed to compile the last known working drivers, version 87.76, following the instructions here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/03/25 … 20-12-386/
That all went well but now I'm using Arch. I tried using the nvidia-96.xx driver in the repos just for testing sake but I still got the same graphical corruption.
Thus I have been trying to install the 87.76 drivers on Arch, but it always fails at the kernel module building stage. I had first applied this patch here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ost1086669, before compling as the plain driver wont compile against recent kernels.
Here is the output from the installer:

The name of the directory you placed the driver in contains spaces. That is  why you get the no rule to make target GLX error.
It would be better not to circumvent pacman. I am using the following PKGBUILDs for the 8776 driver:

Hey man have had the same issue.
How did you go about solving it?

  • [Solved] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module

So, I did an arch base install today, rebooted and after that, basicly I
    added kdemod to pacman.conf,
    updated pacman,
    rewrote pacman.conf (/mirrorlist),
    pacman -Syu,
    pacman -S kdemod,
    pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit,
pacman -S nvidia (removed libgl; 7600GT),
    wrote xorg.conf.
    now when I startx:
    FATAL: module nvidia not found.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): module nvidia not found.NVIDIA kernel module!
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
    I tried reinstalling kernel26, nvidia, didn't work.
EDIT: reinstalled nvidia, worked after reboot.
    * Also shutdown, modprobe.. is gone (command not found). So I pacmaned -S coreutils,
    * which replaced mktemp with core/coreutils, didn't help.
    * EDIT: `su -' solved that
    not a clue, help needed,
    thanks

can i see the output of
    pacman -Q xorg-server nvidia
sudo modprobe -L | grep nvidia
    cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    edit: sorry
sudo modprobe -l | grep nvidia
edit2: recently replied on a similar thread, user used hwd -xa to generate a xorg.conf, then used aticonfig --initial... to generate a xorg.conf.  this resulted in duplicate config entries.
    try this.
reinstall xorg-server, nvidia.  reboot.  run `sudo nvidia-xconfig` only, then move the resulting file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.  then try startx

  • VMware keeps Rebuilding Kernel Modules [Solved]

Hi, and thanks. After the last kernel upgrade everytime I start vmware player the first instance to run will rebuild the kernel modules and there is a warning icon next to the "Blocking File System" entry in the build list. I am using the latest kernel 3.4.2.2-Arch, my vmware player is version 4.0.2 build-591240. It runs fine after it rebuilds but the warning icon has me concerned. Does anyone know what this is? Do I have to move up a vmware version?
thanks in advance for your help.

If anyone is interested, here is the complete console output when I run the player.

if you used the packages from repos, the blacklist is done automatically in nvidia,
    $ pacman -Qo /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf is owned by nvidia 195.36.31-1
    $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
    blacklist nouveau
but i guess you just want to mess your system by using unsupported and very bad ways and you are way smarter than the devs if you used that installer

  • [Solved] Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module

    Hi all,
I've just made the jump to arch and have a fresh install. I'm having trouble getting the nvidia drivers to work. I am currently using the nouveau drivers without issue.
The method I am using - after much trial - is:
    - uninstall nouveau and mesa lib
    - install nvidia package
    - remove nouveau module entry in mkinitcpio.conf
    - run `mkinitcpio -p linux`
    - edit .conf in xorg.conf.d with minimal required settings. Currently:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
I have installed the linux-headers package and tried reinstalling nvidia again

The only entry I found in `dmesg | grep nvidia` related to nvidia-drm, and seemed to say it was loaded successfully. I didn't save the exact entry and i've reinstalled nouveau now so that I could post this.
Any help much appriciated. I've been at this for a while. Learning a lot in the process!

Success! Several days of trying various things and I finally give in and make a post to this forum. One more attempt - which was only really so that I could add modprobe info to this post - and it works.
I had at some stage installed the driver xf86-video-nv, and this may have been causing the clash. I un-installed it, and followed the procedure above to reinstall nvidia.
I think the main hang up I'd had is that I had not been rebuilding my kernel image with mkinitcpio after installing nvidia during my previous attempts.
I hope some info in here helps some other stuck archer.
Edit: Thanks graysky. I had found the right nvidia driver using the arch wiki and followed this advice to remove the nouveau hook. Much appriciated.
