[solved in pacman 4] Ctrl-C'ing pacman can sometimes take a long time

Anyone else see this from time to time?  I hit Ctrl-C on pacman and as I'm typing this, pacman still hasn't stopped.  I hate Ctrl-Z-and-kill-%1'ing pacman, but sometimes I can't wait the 5 minutes or so it takes to Ctrl-C.

The situation is significantly better in pacman 4 because curl uses non-blocking I/O (and libfetch, which powers pacman 3.x does not).

  • [SOLVED] pacman -Syu took an extremely long time today

    Hey,
this is the first time I've encountered such an issue:
today I upgraded as usual (pacman -Syu) but the process took an extremely long time
(~20 minutes). The last time I upgraded was three days ago.
The culprits seem to have been the libreoffice-still and texlive packages.
Has anyone else had this problem? What could have caused this?

Unless you've installed https://www.archlinux.org/groups/any/texlive-lang/ and https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … ontsextra/ too, texlive is not that big.

  • [Solved] Shutdown/Reboot takes a long time

I do an upgrade every 5 days or so but it's been a while since I last rebooted--probably around 15-24 days. Since I haven't shutdown/rebooted for a while, I decided to do one today. I noticed that shutdown/reboot takes a long time, around 2-3 minutes whereas before, it would be instant and the behavior seems weird. Upon pressing shutdown or reboot:
    1. Monitors become completely black and searches for a signal (by switching HDMI, DVI, etc). PC still on
    2. After 1 minute, if reboot, I can hear the GPU fans spin like crazy. Shutdown doesn't do this, just quiet.
    3. After waiting another minute, some output shows up really fast and the PC is rebooted or shutdown
This didn't happen before so I think it's probable that one of the updates did this. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to tell which one.
I followed the section "Diagnosing Shutdown Problems" here on how to debug shutdown problems. I've got the systemd shutdown log but I can't tell where the problem is:

ksu wrote:Thanks alot for the input guys. Since I want to start from scratch anyways I'll definitively dig deeper into the subject. BTRFS snapshot feature and RAID1 by simply mirroring two partitions sound awesome, and the subvolume feature seems to be exactly what I need for my USB setup, giving me alot of flexibility. But if there are really that many reports of random data loss then I'll also do some research into that direction to see what this is all about. I admit I'm a linux noob, but it's a lot of fun to learn all this stuff.
Be sure to read this: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Gotchas
From my own experience, I can say that:
    1. I've never had an issue nor data loss with BTRFS RAID1 root partition on a single disk (other than the first issue on the above list).
    2. I had recurring problems with BTRFS RAID1 non-root partition on a single disk not being able to mount (had to reboot random number of times to get it to mount). However, I suspect this was caused not just by BTRFS but the combination of BTRFS+LVM+dmcrypt which is a rather complex and unusual setup. I had somewhat similar issue with ZFS.
    3. I had BTRFS checkdisk report strange, non-critical, unfixable errors on my non-raid BTRFS root partition, but it never corrupted or lost any data. I simply copied the data to another partition, recreated the root partition and all was fine again.
    4. The last time I lost data on a single partition because of BTRFS was 17 months ago. The last time BTRFS snapshot saved me from losing data was yesterday.
    5. I migrated from BTRFS to ZFS for my backup server and will possibly do so for my work machines. ZFS is more elegant, mature and I have seen no complaints of losing data because of it. However, ZFS is complicated and somewhat restrictive to setup for a data partition, and many times more difficult to setup as root partition. I would not consider it for a non-permanent USB installation.
    6. What we committed here is a massive thread hijacking.

  • I would like any tips about where to take my Macbook Air to solve an iMovie software I have been struggling with for quite a long time. I need to see a person who is willing to help me finalise a film, any tips welcome? Thanks

    Getting in person support

Hi Klaus, I have tried to do that before - I think you replied before, asking me what system I was using. My response was 'Hello, thank you, I am using OS X Version Lion 10.7.5 and iMovie '11 vwesion 9.0.4 (1635).'
Despite completely clearing my machine, and moving the movie project to an external drive, when I try to finalise the movie I get error -108 after approximately one hour of processing.
I am very keen to be able to export this film. My technical knowledge is limited and I learned a basic level of iMovie to make the film - often online responses and suggestions are too complex for me - hence my question about where I would go to have an expert look at this problem...
Any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks

  • [solved] pacman can't acces repositories, but my web browser does

    Hi,
there is a strange problem. Today I tried a pacman -Syu to update, but pacman can't acces my repositories. Gives me errors of
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.archlinux.ro : No address record
I tried different mirrors, change the protocol from ftp to http, but without result. The strange think is that I can access those repositories with my web browser, so I think that it is pacman or python problem.

but it is really strange that when i uncommented "http://ftp.archlinux.org..."  in mirrorlist it is the same error
so what destination for all that mirrors are?
and when I download package from web-interface http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/openbox/ it successfuly downloaded from mirrors.kernel.org but pacman can't...
I'm completely dumb, or the universe had hell changed
As you see, my english is stupid.

  • Pacman can't find php

I want to install php, but pacman can't find the package.
pacman -Sy php [1:02 : ashren]
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
error: 'php': not found in sync db
    Quite strange.

Try pacman -Syy, or try other mirrors.
If that doesn't work, which pacman version are you using? And you could try the --debug output.
And have a look in /var/lib/pacman/sync/extra/php* as well.

  • [SOLVED] systemd-tmpfiles-clean takes a very long time to run

I've been having an issue for a while with systemd-tmpfiles-clean.service taking a very long time to run. I've tried to just ignore it, but it's really bothering me now.
    Measuring by running:
    # time systemd-tmpfiles --clean
    systemd-tmpfiles --clean 11.63s user 110.37s system 10% cpu 19:00.67 total
I don't seem to have anything funky in any tmpfiles.d:
    # ls /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/* /run/tmpfiles.d/* /etc/tmpfiles.d/* | pacman -Qo -
ls: cannot access /etc/tmpfiles.d/*: No such file or directory

How do I debug why it is taking so long? I've looked in man 8 systemd-tmpfiles and on google, hoping to find some sort of --dubug option, but there seems to be none.
Is it some how possible to get a list of the directories that it looks at when it runs?
Anyone have any suggestions on how else to fix this.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    Thanks,

Thank you very much falconindy. SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL=debug helped my find my issue.
The cause of the problem was thousands of directories in /var/tmp/ created by a test suite with a broken clean up method. systemd-tmpfiles-clean was recursing through these, but not deleting them.

Went through this step-by-step, but alas it did not solve the problem. For some reason I can download mail on my Macbook Pro and iPhone, but no my iMac. Connection Doctor shows all green lights. This started today when I was prompted to re-enter incoming mail server passwords. I re-entered passowrds yet again to make sure they were correct. Rebuilt the inBox. Connection Doctor continues to show all green lights, but am still unable to download mail to the inbox. Has anyone else ever run into this problem?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • FCPX10.1.1 does not solve the problem with long-time clip editing!

    OS: clean installed mac os10.9.1
    FCPX: FCPX10.1.1
Project: 4clips, all of the clips is about 1 hour long (dvcprohd)
    Disk: 900MB/S++
    machine specs:
    2*3.06Ghz 6-core
    24GB DDR3
and I've tried these graphic cards:
    K5000
    and
    2 5770
    all get the same results:
If I double press the "L" key, the response of FCPX is too slow
If I do other operation like browse the clip, or import long time clip,
the FCPX will become too slow to browse the timeline.
I've found the FCPX like to generate audio waves of the clip and
there's no option to shutdown this! I've tried all the options in FCPX like
do not show the waveform of audio in preference and close the audio waveform in timeline
I don't think I can work the project with 10.1.x.
the 10.0.9 also has the 1st problem, but don't have the 2nd problem.
Another project: 2000++ 4K 50P clips(XAVC), but on FCPX 10.0.9, all of the clips is less than 40mins, always 20seconds.
though it will get slower when we import clips day after day,
it's much more smoother than 10.1.1!!!!!!
    so,
I don't think we should update to 10.1.x for the little promotion of performance.
and 10.1.x also do not support nvidia K5000 card.
the render is slower than ait5700.....
I hope apple can solve the problem,
all of the above is just basic editing needs!
if the fcpx can not do even a long-time clip editing
    why should I use it?

    2 project:
    1. 4*1 hour clips dvcprohd
that's the problem! I can not bear it.
    2. 2000++clips 4K XAVC 50P project which I don't run on FCPX 10.1.1
I run it in fcpx10.0.9, it's fine, but slower when I imported more and more clips.
until now I can bear it.
the fcpx10.1.1 editing long-time clip has problem:
    1.
it use 150MB/s harddisk speed to generate the waveform.
I have 900MB/s disk speed, so that's not the problem,
but it generate all the time!
1 hour clip's wavefrom generates for 1 hour without stopping, if I stop it , the fcpx crashed!
    2.
when I skimming the clip for editing, the fcpx gets slower, always 2mins to response my operation.
    3.
when I double press J or L key, the fcpx will need about 1 min to response.
the FCPX10.0.9 editing long-time clip problem:
the fcpx10.0.9 can handle the long-time clips, but also has very slow response when I doulbe press J or L key.

    Hello kidmango,
I am going to have to agree with planb77. Look into other drivers in your computer causing the issue, not just the nano's drivers.
It is possible that security software is the culprit. Use this:
    iTunes: Troubleshooting security software issues
You may have to restore your computer to a previous point. From before the issue started. Contact computer manufacture or Windows for steps, or do a search with a search engine.
I would test the ipod on a known good computer to see if its the ipod is the issue. My gut says no. You can set a reservation at an Apple Retail Store. Apple.com/retail .You can also test a known good ipod on your computer.
    Hope this helps.

I searched around for this issue, and found people who had similar problems with Firefox in the past, but I never see anyone who has solved it.  On my setup I don't have this issue with any other app besides nvidia-settings.

Ok today i noticed that if I delete ~/.nvidia-settings-rc, the UI loads instantly just like it's supposed to.   I started googling around and found that there is indeed a bug in nvidia-settings which has something to do with the way it handles a machine's hostname.
If I edit ~/.nvidia-settings-rc and delete every line that starts with my hostname, the program loads instantly.   When you close nvidia-settings, it will re-write the file, and the next time you start it, you're back to waiting a long time for the UI to load.   It seems there is nothing that can be done to truly fix this until nvidia fixes the bug that is causing it.
Thank you! I had this problem since the latest update.
To avoid having to remove/edit the configuration file, I have added a line in /etc/hosts:

  • [SOLVED] After pacman update, system no longer boots

Updated pacman packages, and half-way through the upgrade proces fails (it mentions not being able to find package-control).  Upon investigating, I notice no programs are working.  I ls /usr/bin and it is empty!  In a panic, I restart the machine, and it no longer boots up.
My boot is on sda3 and /root is sda5.
When bash starts up, it loads the kernel fine, and then after a second it panics and exclaims: "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg".
I load up my trusty Arch livecd and fsck the partitions.  Fsck claims both partitions are clean.  I am able to mount them and examine the file structure: all files look like they are there.  I then try to chroot the mounted partition (sda5, my /root), and get the error that "/bin/bash" is not found, even though it is there in the correct directory.  Not sure what to do now.
My grub entry, which has always worked fine prior to this:
    legacy_kernel '/linux344-ck' 'acpi_osi=Linux' 'root=/dev/sda5' 'rootfstype=ext4' 'init=/sbin/init' 'pcie_aspm=force' 'acpi_backlight=vendor' 'i915.i915_enable_rc6=1' 'i915.i915_enable_fbc=1' 'i915.lvds_downclock=1' 'ipv6.disable=1' 'i915.semaphores=1' 'modprobe.blacklist=bluetooth,uvcvideo' 'ro'
    legacy_initrd '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img' '/initramfs-linux-fallback.img'
UPDATE: solved issue.  I didn't read the news.  Upgrading via pacman broke my system because of this.  Now I know!  System is running smooth again.

Huh. I guess the problem was a couple of stale and crusty {,f}getty .service files, and an obsolete slim.service file I created a while back.
Removing them fixed my problem, although tty1 still shows boot messages (not a problem, and may not even be "new" behaviour)
    Cheers Tomegun.
