[Solved, install dejavu font] Libre Office fonts are rendered as boxes

Been a while since I've posted and thank you in advance for any help offered.
My issue is pretty straight forward:  all my menus and fonts in Libre Office Writer show up as boxes instead of letters.  I have searched the wiki and forums for a solution but most people who have this problem fix the issue by installing the right language pack.
As you can see below that isn't my issue:
local/libreoffice-common 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
common files for LibreOffice - a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites
local/libreoffice-en-US 4.1.4-3
English (US) language pack for LibreOffice
local/libreoffice-writer 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
Word Processor Application for LibreOffice.
I have no plug-ins installed apart from hunspell, mythes and hyphenation.  I removed these packages but there was no change.
This machine is a Dell laptop with the Intel video chip and thus I have the correct driver installed and everything else works fine:
:root: ~ : pacman -Qs intel
local/intel-dri 10.0.2-1
Mesa drivers for Intel
local/xf86-video-intel 2.99.907-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
I tried nuking my Libre Office directory in my home directory but that yielded no change.  My .gtk-* directories don't contain anything specific to LO.
These are the only fonts I've added to this install (thanks boohoomil) and are not customised in any way:
local/cairo-infinality-ultimate 1.12.16-3 (infinality-bundle)
Cairo vector graphics library with respect-fontconfig, expose and Ubuntu patches (infinality-bundle)
local/fontconfig-infinality-ultimate 2.11.0-15 (infinality-bundle)
A library for configuring and customizing font access (includes generic fontconfig package and ultimate settings by bohoomil).
local/freetype2-infinality-ultimate 2.5.2-3 (infinality-bundle)
TrueType font rendering library with Infinality patches and custom settings by bohoomil (infinality-bundle).
I have gone so far as to try snapwm and Xfce4 but there is no difference in the font rendering in LO.
I'm stymied about this because I have used this setup previously on this and two other machines.  Any ideas?

I thought of that but, as I use the infinality-bundle, which fonts do I need to test this hypothesis?  Or can you suggest one I can install from the official repos?
[edit]  Just after posting this I remembered that LO, as noted on the wiki somewhere, suggest one install the ttf-dejavu font.  After installing this font everything is now showing correctly.
@nomorewindows, Thank you very much!  I feel a bit silly but I learned something from this and for that I grateful to you.

It doesn't fix the main problem, but read the note and install English langpack https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … stallation
The error message isn't very helpful, it says
    The application can not run.
    An internal error occurred.

  • Updating Acrobat X when Office-Apps are running

We want to update our clients, which already have installed an older version of Acrobat Professional 9.x with ADOBE Acrobat Professional X (10.1.0). This action must run silent with no user interaction.
I have written a script which kills all running processes using acrobat.exe and close all open PDF-files, also in IE. Then the Acrobat-MSI is started using a customized MST (including Serialnumber) with the parameter /qn. This script is mandatory launched by SCCM where the program-option “Allow users to interact with this program” is NOT set.
If a Office-application like PowerPoint or Word (with the Acrobat Plug-in) is running, the script fails (with 9.x of Acrobat the same worked fine and without any errors…).
Any ideas how to silent update an existing installation of Acrobat with Acrobat X when Office-Apps are open (won’t kill them)?

    Hi Vinod
Thank's very much for your answer. In the meantime I found the article
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/868930?tstart=0
too. It's pity that's no more possible to do a silent install of Acrobat even Office Apps.are running. Therefore I have to kill all of them and to disturbe all users by there daily work.

  • My Microsoft Office font selection is delayed... Please help solve?!

I have a Mac Book Air and have Microsoft Office installed on my laptop.  When trying to switch or select a font in any of the programs it is always delayed about 10 seconds.  I have extra fonts added to my computer but wouldn't think that would slow it down.  Please help, I'm not sure how to fix this problem??

In the Preferences (General tab) there's an option to turn on (or off) WYSIWYG font & stype menus. Make sure that is turned off. What you should see is that the first time you select a font that it takes about 10 seconds to build the font menu but after that font access is nearly instantanious.
There is one thing that's wierd - you can change fonts from the Ribbon or you can change fonts from the Font menu in the menubar. These apparently build different caches because if you select a font from the Ribbon all selections after that are fast. Or should be. But the first time you select a font from the Font menu (or vice versa) the same delay takes place. But again it should happen just once.

  • Hello. I am trying to self host Italia fonts (Book, Bold and Medium) on Adobe Muse. I purchased web fonts from Linotype that are "obfuscated" - which means the name is hidden. Apparently I also need to install system fonts. Can I install with code in muse

Hello! I am trying to self host Italia fonts in muse. I purchased from Linotype the web fonts. But they sent obfuscated fonts and code. I need to also install as system fonts and those do not work for that. We already have different Italia fonts that we owned prior but they are not obfuscated... Is this a problem? Is there an easier way I can do this? TIA!

    Abhishek,
Thank you for the reply. Wanted to comment on a few things.
I reviewed the other post that you've referenced. Nothing unusual jumped out at me as something that I was not aware of. I'm running an older iMac that is in good working condition. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 24" screen. I know this issue is fleeting, as I stated earlier typically can be corrected with a restart of the CC Desktop application (that I am always running at startup). I have not been able to determine that shutting down Muse corrects the issue. I would, at this time say it doesn't.
I did open InDesign and see if the fonts in question, Open Sans and Open Sans Condensed, were present and usable. They were. The fonts are shown as being synched in my CC Desktop app window (even if they are not "installed" in Muse). That is expected but it may be a bug in how Muse brings in a font from those that are already synched to your CC account. I don't know enough about how that works to comment.
And just to complicate matters, Muse seems to be working again, the fonts that is. I brought them back in and they are showing up in all locations (which there are actually three - see screen shots).
First is primary text menu dropdown (to right of orange "Text").
Second is if you click orange Text link. Another drop down menu appears.
And lastly, the Text Panel to right of screen.
I also wanted to add this extra bit of information, for what it is worth. When the issue arises and you do not get the sub-menu dropdown showing various styles of the font (italics, bold, etc.), one can use click on the missing font if you had used it previously and it is present in the "previously used font" list.
    Cheers!

  • [solved] Installing MS fonts breaks non-Latin character display

    Hello,
I just installed the standard Windows 7 font-set by directly copying it into "/usr/share/fonts/Windows/"; now, various scripts -- including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and many others -- display as blank squares.  I have a number of unusual things installed, including the infinality-bundle and a large number of obscure manually installed fonts (to achieve complete unicode coverage).  This isn't the first time new fonts have broken things (I had to remove cardo.ttf because it replaces runic glyphs with its own placeholder) but it is the most severe.  I don't want to remove either infinality or the ms fonts, but can't find out what to modify in order to make them play nice.  The goal is to have the system primarily use Windows fonts (especially for web browsing), and fall back on the Linux fonts for unusual characters.  Fontconfig is confusingly documented.  Could anyone give me a push in the right direction?  Thank you all.
On a related note; if anyone knows a good, cohesive set of fonts that cover the entire Unicode standard, I would be in tears of joy.

  • [SOLVED] Looking for URW Gothic L font in .ttf format (...)

    Hi,
I'm able to use URW Gothic L font while writing in OpenOffice.org, as default font for Conky and PyPanel (all with working Polish letters like - Ł, ł, Ó, ó, Ś, ś, Ż, ż, Ź, ź, Ę, ę, Ć, ć). Recently I wanted to test bmpanel with Arch theme. So I edited the theme config file and changed
    clock_font DejaVuSans-14
    to
    clock_font URWGothicL-14
You can imagine how suprised I was, when executing bmpanel had no effect, but when I tried to lunch it from the terminal everything was (nearly) clear. Here's the output:
    > bmpanel arch
    starting bmpanel with theme: arch
    only ttf files are supported
    failed to load font: URWGothicL-14
    fatal loading error
    failed to load theme: arch
So it seems that URW Gothic L is not in .ttf format. I've looked through all known to me folders containing fonts, but with no luck. Where the hell is it stored?
These are font packages installed in my system (hope these are all of them, but maybe you know a better way of displaying a list of all font packages installed):
    extra/gsfonts 8.11-4 [installed]
    extra/ttf-dejavu 2.28-1 [installed]
    extra/ttf-ms-fonts 2.0-2 [installed]
    extra/xorg-fonts-100dpi 1.0.1-1 [installed] (xorg)
    extra/xorg-fonts-75dpi 1.0.1-2 [installed] (xorg)
    extra/xorg-fonts-alias 1.0.1-1 [installed]
    extra/xorg-fonts-encodings 1.0.2-2 [installed]
    extra/xorg-fonts-misc 1.0.0-3
Is there a way of getting URW Gothic L in proper .ttf format to use with bmpanel?
PS. If you need any other data, please say so, I'll provide it as fast as I can. I'm not an expert in those matters (yet ).
    EDIT:
I've searched some more and it appears that Polish version of URW Gothic L is a Type1 font included in gsfonts package. Still searching for TTF equivalent or a maybe a way to make a Type1 font work with bmpanel.

Made it Thank you Skottish. That's why I like Arch community - if someone answers your question you may me sure it will be a helpful answer (well... in most cases).
For those who might have the same problem in the future - I choose a simple solution - Fontforge. It did the trick just fine.
    EDIT:
Ops, reached the subject's length limit I'll need to cut it in order to add [SOLVED] there. Done.

  • Why does Indesign say I have missing fonts even though they are in my packaged document?

I use CS4 on my pc at work, and always package my files, as I have always done on my mac at home, to keep the links and fonts together so that when I send someone a folder, all of the fonts and images work.  For some reason, the packaged graphic designs (created on a mac) that are being sent to us from our graphic designer, all of my fonts are lost - even after having purchased the main one that we use - Gotham - to prevent this from happening.  This also occurs with any designs that I package and send out to others in our office.  I always have to relink the Gotham fonts, and I cannot retrieve the formatting for the fonts that we don't have, even though they are packaged.
We are considering purchasing a mac for me to use in the office, but I'd like to make sure that it is not user error before we proceed.
Any ideas would be wonderful.  I never had this problem with my mac at home with packaging, and it has me confused and frustrated at work.
    Thanks!

Since CS6 is the current release, upgrading to CS5 is a near impossibility, and EVERYONE will need to upgrade in lockstep or you'll be worse off than you are now with users of your newer version creating files that cannot be opened by users of CS4 (and your CS4 packages won't automatically install the fonts in the documents in the later versions without manually changing the names of the packaged fonts folders).
As far as font formats, if you are going to collaborate cross-platform, the font of choice is OpenType, which is 100% cross-platform compatible, and second choice is Windows TrueType which also can be installed on Mac OS X (so, essentially, also cross-platform). Last choice would be to use Windows Type1 which can be installed in the private InDesign Fonts folder in the Mac applications folder and will work in ID, but nowhere else. Any of these would allow everyone to use the same fonts, presuming you all purchase the same versions. Purchasing Windows versions and Mac versions of the same font usually works, but there may be little surprises, and you probbly don't want that.

  • Firefox installed in Archlinux can display fonts after a new fonts installed

Hi! I'm a Linux user. Recently I migrate to Archlinux. At first time I used Firefox without issues. Then in the process the install and config software and the distro I installed new fonts. That fonts I used in IBM Linux distro, OpenClient based on RHEL 6.5. Thats fonts are a backup of that machine. The set of fonts include around of 4000 fonts: Windows 7 Fonts, Google Fonts, Droid and others. In RHEL I have not issues with this fonts. The fonts groups are:
    <pre><nowiki>[elrengo@xpsl421x .fonts]$ ls -l
    total 272
    drwx------ 1 elrengo users 4096 Sep 8 2010 AnonymousPro-1.002.001
    drwx------ 1 elrengo users 4096 Sep 8 2010 AnonymousProMinus-1.002.001

    drwx------ 1 elrengo users 65536 Oct 3 2013 Windows7Fonts
    [elrengo@xpsl421x .fonts]$ </nowiki></pre>
But in Archlinux after fonts installation Firefox can not show fonts, and I can not write in textbox. I do:
    * Reset Firefox to defaults --> Do not works.
    * Uninstall Firefox / Re install Firefox --> Do not works.
    * Reinstall fontconfig package in Archlinux. --> Do not works.
    * Update font cache --> Do not works.

If need it something more please let me know
    Thanks in advance!

  • Vietnamese fonts in Office 2004

    Hi-
I'm a reseller with a customer who has thus far been unable to use Vietnamese fonts in Office 2004 - although he can in Office 2003 (for Windows). Is there any genius out there who has a fix for this?

I'm a reseller with a customer who has thus far been
unable to use Vietnamese fonts in Office 2004 -
If the customer is talking about input, do they understand that you need to activate and select the Vietnamese keyboard layout? You do this by going to system prefs/international/input menu, check the box for Vietnamese (plus the box for "show input menu in Finder"), then select Vietnamese in the "flag" menu at the top right of the Finder, and type. The fonts are already installed and selected automatically.
If the customer wants to install and use other non-Unicode fonts for input, I don't know if it's possible. Probably best to ask in the Word forum and give the names of the fonts:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups
If the customer is talking about being unable to read Vietnamese documents produced on some other platform, then there could be encoding issues that would need fixing either via finding a font with the right encoding or changing the encoding via another app like TextEdit. In this case I could probably figure out a solution if I had copy of the doc.

  • Duplicate Fonts W/ Office 04

I had a question with fonts and office.
Is it just me or does office install duplicate fonts into the Username>Library>Fonts? i have provided screen shots:
    Username>library>fonts:
    http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8498/fontsuserpu3.jpg
    and
    Applications>MicrosoftOffice>Office>Fonts:
    http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/7603/fontsofficekr2.jpg
If its possible to remove the fonts from the Username Library Fonts folder will i still have access to the fonts installed my microsoft in applications such as Photoshop/Macromedia Studio etc??
or should i just leave them?
    thank you!!

im wondering if theyd have any advert affect at all having two of the same fonts (installed by office) on my system.
Having duplicate fonts will always cause issues. Usually with the conflicting fonts not showing up in most applications as the system can't assign definite memory address space to either one.
I can't say how well Font Book does at resolving conflicts since I don't use it. But just the fact that Font Book leaves all fonts in their respective Fonts folders means that they're still going to conflict in any app that doesn't pay attention to Font Book's command that a font is supposed to be inactive when it's still in a Fonts folder.
You're really better off finding the duplicate fonts yourself and deleting one or the other. If they're the same type, like Microsoft's Arial font in more than one Fonts folder, it doesn't matter which one you remove. If they're different types, like Helvetica.dfont in the /System/Library/Fonts/ folder, and a Type 1 PostScript or OpenType version of Helvetica somewhere else, then you need to decide which is the more important version for you to keep on the system and remove the other.
Keep in mind that a font like Helvetica.dfont is actually a suitcase containing more than one font. In this case, it holds Helvetica and Helvetica Bold. So if you don't have a different version of Helvetica Bold to use, then removing Helvetica.dfont will also cause any application (like iCal) that uses the bold version to have it unavailable.
It gets trickier with OS 9. There's a Helvetica there, too. But OS 9 can't read .dfonts, so if you need to use Helvetica in an OS 9 (Classic) application, then you can't remove the OS 9 version regardless of the fact that it technically conflicts with the OS X version. Though that conflict will only affect OS X apps. OS X can read any fonts in the OS 9 Fonts folder, but OS 9 can't read or see any fonts in the various OS X Fonts folders.
Also, as Tom mentions, the fonts in the Office folder are meaningless. The only conflicts you would have would be between those in the Username>Library>Fonts folder and the other three main Fonts folders on the hard drive. Those are:
    /Library/Fonts/
    /System/Library/Fonts/
    /System Folder/Fonts/

  • [Solved] Changed Graphics Driver/Xorg.conf, Font Size Now Different

    Hello,
I just got the Catalyst 9.4 drivers working on my laptop (Lenovo T400) since the open source ones just can't keep up (even with DRI).
The problem is now my fonts are all different sizes (or not loading).
I was thinking this might be because of my monitor settings in xorg.conf.  I've spent a really long time trying to get the catalyst drivers working (I'm doing OpenGL work, so I kinda need them), so I definitely understand why the Arch team took them out of the main repository.  I'm just a little hesitant about changing settings after I finally found a working config.

What are you using to login?
if it's startx, you can do startx -- -dpi 96
if it's a login manager, you'll need to edit it's configuration and set it otherwise.
Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm starting slim as a daemon at bootup inside /etc/rc.conf, then using XFCE4.

  • [SOLVED] How to make small MS fonts antialiased?

I have the ttf-vista-fonts package installed because I like fonts like Calibri. However, at font sizes under 15 pt, that font (and one or two others in the set) gets rendered without antialiasing on, which really grates on the eyes considering that the other fonts on my system are antialiased at that size. To make matters horrendously worse, anytime a ligature occurs in the text ("tt", "fi", etc.), those letter pairs are antialiased! I copied the calibri TTF files over from a Windows installation and they are indeed the same files as on Windows, where it antialiases all the way down to 8 pt and possibly lower. From this I know it's something in my configuration.
What in my configuration is making this happen and what do I have to change to make this font antialias all the way down? Something in my fonts.conf maybe?

Calibri has embedded bitmaps; this drove me nuts too. The easiest thing to do, depending on your current DE/WM, is to add the following lines to your ~/.fonts.conf
<!-- disable embedded bitmaps in fonts to fix Calibri, Cambria, etc. -->
    <match target="font">
    <edit mode="assign" name="embeddedbitmap"><bool>false</bool></edit>
    </match>
Check out my fonts.conf for more info. Websites like http://codinghorror.com used to look horrible before this fix.
Thank you, this quick little snippet totally did the trick. And actually, Coding Horror was one of the places where I was constantly bugged by this in the recent past.

  • [SOLVED] Libre Office Writer 4.2.3 freezes trying to open docx file

After the upgrade of the Libre Office suite from 4.2.2 to 4.2.3, I cannot open docx files - the UI freezes with no response to keyboard or mouse.
Downgrading all libreoffice-* packages to 4.2.2-5 allows Writer to open the files once again correctly.
The only other issue I've seen on the forum is related to a dependency on gstreamer-0.10, but since I'm able to install all 4.2.3 packages I assume it's not that causing this problems.
    Anyone else having similar problems?
