[SOLVED] Install Gnome DE without Pulse Audio?

I currently have XFCE4, E17 and Fluxbox installed. I was thinking about installing Gnome DE. But I have alsa set up nicely and I do NOT want pulseaudio (Pulseaudio seems to be nothing but headaches for me.)
So is there a way through pacman that I can install Gnome DE, extras and tools while forcing it not to install pulseaudio? If so will this cause Gnome DE to be unstable or unusable?

So, no you can't. But you can choose not to use it.
I was afraid of that.  Thanks for the reply.
In the past I have done that, chose not to use it. But I was hoping I could just not install it from the start and not have to go through that. I think I will not install Gnome. It did have some tools that I liked but I am finding alternatives already. So I will just keep what I have and add only what I need/want.

  • [Solved] Installing Gnome

    I've got Arch x86 running in the latest VirtualBox to limit the damage caused by my noobness.
    I'm stuck with installing gnome. Specifically the step where gnome-session is called. I've not done the exec steps after that.
    As a normal user:
    gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
    startx results in "module vboxvideo not found"
    As root:
    gnome-session results in "WARNING **: Cannot open display"
    startx launches X correctly
    If I then run gnome-session from within X then it gives me some kind of hybrid interface. (See screenshot below)
    As I understand the GNOME Arch wiki gnome-session should launch straight into gnome, regardless of user type. So how do I get rid of the vboxvideo not found? Please also explain what that hybrid interface is. Is it supposed to be like that?
    Edit: Also, why does the behaviour differ between root & normal user?
    The VBox guest additions appear to have installed correctly.
    xorg.conf is over here: http://pastebin.com/hHSCF4M8

    Apologies. I've read the rules cover-to-cover now. Could you perhaps also add a reference to these quantitative rules here, so that others won't repeat my mistake.

    Looks like twm is running in that image so X should be ok
    Mount up guest additions iso and then run it [x86]
    Also try
    /etc/rc.d/gdm start
    Once you know gnome is working add it too rc.conf daemons
    Mr Green for president! That starts Gnome correctly when launched from root.
    Also added gdm to the daemons section of /etc/rc.conf as you suggested and now it boots straight into gdm/gnome. Awesome.

  • Gnome Panel, without gconf

    I have been using Tint, which works well, but I miss the menu that gnome-panel had. It also had a lot of little applets that I liked as well. However, i'm using just pekwm (not gnome with Pekwm as wm). which means I don't have all the gnome stuff installed atm (which is good to me). So i was wondering if it was possible to install gnome-panel without a lot of dependencies, especially gconf.

    no. gnome-panel stores the configurations in gconf

  • [Solved] Pulse Audio won't work on newly installed system with Gnome

    About a year ago I got a new computer and more or less retired my old one with my first arch install. Recently, I decided I would set it up as a Linux system for my sister. I first updated the computer, which broke it royally (since it was last updated before the /bin symlinking happened) but I eventually got it fixed. However, after doing that, Pulse Audio wouldn't work, then I broke X and decided to do a full reinstall.
    Now, on this clean install, Pulse is again not working. I have set up Gnome and gdm to work, and everything works great except Pulse.  The wiki says that Pulse with Gnome 3 requires no extra setup, so I have not edited conf files at all. I have, however, installed "pulseaudio-alsa", which created this conf file:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    # vim:set ft=alsaconf:
    which seems fairly standard. Anyway, I tried removing it and had the same problems. When I have Pulse Audio running and try to play sound, I get the error:
    ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1022:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
    Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
    which is obviously trying for ALSA, or from mplayer:
    AO: [pulse] Init failed: Connection refused
    Running "pacmd list" nets me:
    Daemon not responding.
    and pavucontrol gives me:
    Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK
    when I try to start it.
    No pulseaudio commands seem to work (e.g. pulseaudio -k). They don't raise any errors, but also it doesn't have any effect on the server.
    The only asound conf file is "/etc/asound.conf", clearing ~/.config/pulse does not fix the issue.
    Journalctl does not seem to give anything interesting (Stale PID is the only message when starting Pulse), though admittedly I'm just vgrepping all of journalctl since I don't know how to narrow it down more, nor does the output from pulseaudio -vvvv. There are a lot of errors in pulseaudio -vvvv, but they all appear to be related to loading devices that don't exist, and so I assume not a problem, I can post it if necessary. Sometimes when I kill Pulse the process refuses to go away and I have to reboot in order to clear the process out, but I don't think that's related.
    If I kill Pulse or keep it from starting on boot, I can play sound, but only through ALSA, and while I didn't have the problem I expected (I can still play multiple things simultaneously) there's still the issue that the volume buttons in Gnome will no longer work and that the volume levels ALSA reports are basically nonsense to a human being.
    I basically just blurbed everything I thought of/found on the wiki or forums, and I'm not really sure where to go from here. It's a fairly old computer, so that could be related, and I'd be willing to dump Pulse if Gnome could integrate well with ALSA, but obviously fixing Pulse would be the preferred option.
    Any suggestions on where to look next? I've run out of ideas.
    Thanks.

    Wonder if you have a conflict between two audio cards ... for example, I have a friend with some PulseAudio problems caused by conflict between the HDMI audio from his graphics card and his onboard sound. Something would switch PulseAudio to the wrong card and it would just quit after getting itself into a twist. Unsolved, I'm afraid, but have a look at commands such as:
    aplay -l
    pactl list sinks
    pactl stat
    (Latter two will need PulseAudio coaxed into life first)
    and of course, the Arch wiki.
    If there is a conflict, blacklisting kernel modules might also be needed.

  • [Gnome 3] Uses for System Sound Alsa instead of Pulse Audio?!

    If I open "Sound Settings" click on the reiter "Applications" then I see which programs are currently playing sound.
    Because I have installed the freedesktop sound theme I hear some sound if I raise or lower the volume.
    But why does it listen that the gnome-shell uses the alsa-plugin instead of pulse audio directly?!
    Best Regards

    Hmm... well I'm using Gentoo, and I have alsa flag turned on in my instalation of sun-jdk. So I don't know, but as I say, playing buffered sound with SourceDataLine and hardware mixer (not Java Sound Audio Engine) causes the same artifacts at the end of the sound as mplayer using oss. Might as well not be related at all, but then maybe you (or anyone else) can tell me if you can observe the same kind of behaviour while playing sound with java on your machine? I have cheap Realtek High Definition sound card, but it doesn't change the fact that in Windows, the sound plays correctly.
    But thanks for reply :)
    PS. by OSS in this context I mean oss emulation in ALSA.

  • Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]

    I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
    here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:

  • [SOLVED] Pulse Audio / ALSA audio sharing.

    SOLUTION AT POST # 4
    My computer has integrated audio and HDMI.  From my understanding, to be able to switch between these two types of audio hardware I require a sound server.  If this is not correct, please let me know so that I can uninstall Pulse Audio.  Assuming it is correct, I have numerous problems with my audio.  When running multiple programs, often I have to open pavucontrol and move the volume slider around in order for the audio to play in a newly opened program.  I have XFCE's volume control set to ALSA, and I am unable to change it to Pulse Audio for some reason.  This is a problem because every time I mute or change the volume using XFCE's volume control, I then have to go into Pulse Audio later to change the audio back.  If I run a game or VLC, and then open Firefox, I get no Flash audio.  However, if I run Firefox first, I have no audio in VLC or in game.  Usually I can fix this by opening pavucontrol and messing with the volume sliders.  This is not ideal.  Ultimately it seems the problem is that the program I am using are not sharing the audio hardware, so only one can play audio at a time.
    What can I do to make my audio work as it should?
    Here is my audio hardware
    # lspci | grep -i audio
    00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05)
    Screenshot of the only sound card option I have in the XFCE Audio Mixer Plugin:
    http://imgur.com/3TJWC
    I searched the Wiki, but it is out of date.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#ALSA
    . . . For the applications that do not support PulseAudio and support ALSA it is recommended to install the PulseAudio plugin for ALSA. This package also contains the necessary /etc/asound.conf for configuring ALSA to use PulseAudio.
    To prevent applications from using ALSA's OSS emulation and bypassing Pulseaudio (thereby preventing other applications from playing sound), make sure the module snd_pcm_oss is not in the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf. If it is currently loaded (lsmod|grep oss), disable it by executing: . . .
    How can I do this using systemd instead of rc.conf?
    Edit: Since there is a lack of response, I am completely changing the entire post in order to be clear and productive.

    I found a solution here: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- … audio.html
    You must create /etc/asound.conf and insert the following:
    pcm.pulse {
    type pulse
    ctl.pulse {
    type pulse
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse
    pcm.phononpulse {
    type plug
    slave.pcm {
    type pulse
    hint {
    show on
    description "PulseAudio"

  • (Solved)pacman , install a program without answer

    Hello world !
    (Firstly , sorry if i make errors in english , it's because i'm french )
    So ! I'm writing a shell program in bash to restore my system (to restore wallpapers , theme, icons, .config ect)
    This is the main file of the program.
    #!/bin/bash
    echo "Bienvenue $USER"
    while [ -z $reponse ] || [ $normal == 1 ]
    do
    let "normal = 0"
    read -p 'Voulez-vous poursuivre la procédure de post-installation ? oui | non : ' reponse
    case $reponse in
    "oui")
    echo "OK"
    #mettre le code ici
    ./themes.sh
    ./icons.sh
    ./applications.sh
    ./config.sh
    ./drivers.sh
    "non")
    echo "À bientôt !"
    echo "erreur syntaxe"
    let "normal = 1"
    esac
    done
    exit
    The main script execute several scripts , and the applications script  install applications (by exemple firefox) but i don't want that pacman asks me an answer to install a program.
    I want know how i can tell at pacman " install the program without my permission , without my answer" but what's the command for this ?
    (Small issue , "i want know" is correct in english ? )

    I want to know, and thanks for reading this post. But don't worry, your English is easily understandable.

  • [SOLVED] Can I install Gnome 3 alongside KDE?

    Long story short, I hated everything about Gnome 3 when it first came out, but 3.10 (and 3.12) look sleek. I've just installed it in VBox and it seems great, though there are some graphical issues (I'm guessing that's because of the VBox).
    Currently running Arch as a host, with KDE 4.12 installed. I remember back in the old days you could install both DEs easily and switch between them in the login manager - is this still the case? Should I simply do a pacman -S install gnome and that's it? The main question is - this should not cause any issues, correct?
    Cheers,
    Bo

    Try using gnome classic. Its preconfigured gnome-shell so it looks a little bit like gnome2, but with the gnome3 functionality... and its lightweight (in comparisson to KDE4). Which was the main reason why I switched from xfce4 to gnome3. (and i am using the gnome-classic one) KDE takes too long to load IMHO and thats something I cannot live with.

  • [SOLVED] Installing the latest development version of GNOME

    Is there a way to install GNOME (2.26 development version) from SVN or from an Arch repo? I can't find any information-

    I can wait that long, thanks!

  • Installed pulse-audio - 128 M of temp files upon login

    Is this normal when using pulse-audio:
    $ ls -l /dev/shm
    total 100
    -r-------- 1 facade users 67108904 May 1 10:16 pulse-shm-2730750796
    -r-------- 1 facade users 67108904 May 1 10:16 pulse-shm-3048609656
    -r-------- 1 facade users 67108904 May 1 10:16 pulse-shm-3201059327

    Are these files actually needed for anything?  If not and if there is no option to disable their creation in a conf somewhere (I found none), I added the following to my ~/.bashrc which takes care of it:
    if [ ! -z $(find /dev/shm/ -maxdepth 1 -name "pulse-shm*") ]; then
    for i in $(ls /dev/shm/pulse-shm*); do rm -f $i; done
    fi
    ...is there a more efficient method?

  • [SOLVED] just installed gnome, recommended wireless internet..

    I just installed gnome and I have my b43 broadcom working (through terminal configuration).  How do I go about installing an applet on my panel to select wireless networks? (yes, similar to ubuntu..)
    Last edited by playdafunkimuzic (2008-12-30 19:29:19)

    I use WPA and the Wicd only connect with Preshared Key and with Passphrase doesn't work I don't know why.
    A sugestion: Use WPA instead, because WEP is very simple to break with simple tools:
    kismet: to detect your wireless network
    aircrack-ng: to crack your WEP protection
    wireshark: to sniff your packages

  • Skype/Pulse audio problem only if auto started

    Hi,
    I've an Arch/XFCE laptop including pulse audio and Skype (configured to use the pulse audio).
    Skype has been configured  (using XFCE startup menu) to auto start during boot ( we boot daily), and, till about 2 weeks ago, worked fine.
    Ever since, Skype starts but isn't functional (while trying to connect to the test service I can't hear anything, not even the dialing), and, after a few minutes, starts with a constant loud noise (which stops, once I quit Skype).
    Interesting, since the problem  has begun, once I do either of the following, Skype returns, and remains, to be fully functional without any noise:
    1. Quit the auto-started Skype, and immediately relaunch it.
    2. Cancel to Skype auto start, and manually start Skype after XFCE becomes visible.
    Looking at log files (below), I've seen some pulse audio related errors which I couldn't solve and may be related.
    I do a full system update (almost) daily.
    I'd be happy to return to the former state (functional auto-started Skype). Please advise
    Thanks

  • Pulse Audio, Lost Sound

    I'm using Gnome with Pulse Audio and was working well for a while.  Earlier today I was playing a .wmv file and my whole desktop locked up forcing a hard reboot of the computer.  When I got gnome back up I had no sound and can't figure out why.
    Volume control thing on the taskbar shows that sound is unmuted and at full volume.  The pulse audio app shows the same thing.  If I open up alsamixer it shows only 1 channel which is also unmuted and at full volume.
    Any ideas to troubleshoot this?  Thanks.

    Well I (sort of) solved this.... I reverted back to plain ALSA and it works fine
    The hard reboot was caused while watching a .wmv video.  I don't remember precisely now in what program, I don't have vlc installed on this computer so I'm pretty sure it was Totem.
    Can't find anything on the wiki pages to help me, but thanks for your suggestions.

    Well I do back up all my data religiously, but don't even know what to restore to make this one work short of a full image (which I don't have).  I have snapshots going back a few months but not sure which file(s) need(s) to be rolled back.
    I'm happy with ALSA for now, I never got much out of Pulse, just installed it out of curiousity.

    I am confused have you installed alsa or not?
    your first sentence says that you have, your last says that you don't. and your title talks about pulse audio.
