[SOLVED] Installation to a Bcache Device - A Few Questions

I'm installing arch to a bcache device following instructions on this page:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bc … che_device
One thing I can't figure out.....
Step 1 is to boot into the install disc....DONE
.... at this point no partitioning has been done....
Step 2 is to install bcache-tools from the AUR.
Question: how can I install packages from the AUR if I don't have the base-devel group installed on my system yet? Am I overlooking a step or missing something obvious? Please help I'm stomped.

I figured as much. I guess I'm confused. Building packages from the AUR requires the base-devel group, does it not? So how can I install bcache-tools into the live environment?

  • Oracle 9i R2 Installation on RH Linux 7.3 -- Have a few questions.

    Hello,
I am at the end of the Oracle 9i R2 installation and have a few questions.
    1) The "Agent Configuration Assistant" keeps failing. I get the following message.
    Parameters "orahome" = /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0
    Parameters "nodeinfo" = NODE_VALUE
    Agent Service Failed
What does this mean and how can I complete Agent Configuration Assistant install?
    2) I completed the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant successfully and created passwords for sys and sysoper (not sure if these were the exact users). Note I did not modify any other users or unlock them.
How do I log into the sqlplus prompt, what users should I use and how can I create new users and databases?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    (1) You can probably just ignore the Agent Configuration (are you using the Agent to collect data?)
    (2) sqlplus '/ as sysdba' will log you into the SQL*Plus prompt.

  • A few questions about Boot Camp: installation, performance, which Win OS?

    Hello.
I am planning on getting a windows OS. My main motives for this are because I would like to get some PC only games (I've been eyeing that Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition that is soon to come out) and because there is a good chance that I will need some PC only programs for my college work. I just had a few questions before I did anything. Note: I am running 10.5.8 now but getting 10.6 soon.
    1. According to wikipedia: "Its functionality relies on BIOS emulation through EFI and a partition table information synchronization mechanism between GPT and MBR combined". The only word I understood of that sentence was "emulation." I know that emulation software significantly reduces performance. Is this true for boot camp? (say i were to get the exact same game for both mac and windows and set them to the exact same performance settings, when playing on windows, would there be more lag than on OS X?)
    2. Which Windows OS should I get? Since I am just going to be using Boot Camp to run games and a few other programs, would XP be the best to get to optimize the application's performance (as opposed to Win 7)?
    3. How complex is installation? I am a decent Mac techie, but this is my first time with boot camp, and I am a Windows noobie.
    4. There seems to be a lot of talk about partitions. What exactly is a partition? I have some theories, but want to know for sure.

  • Adobe to ditch flash for mobile devices! A few questions

Just read the news. Have a few questions
    1. Is AIR still going to be used for cross platform deployment as that is what I am using now ie: will it be used to deploy html5 apps/programmes?
    2. What tool/IDE will adobe be using for html5 - flash? flex?
    3. All of our multimedia swfs etc... - can they be exported/used in an html5 environment
    4. html5 coding - is it similar to actionscript 3 ie: do we have to start all over again - back to school?
    5. Games coded with actionscript 3. Can these games be exported to html5 or must they be rewritten?
Flash stays for pc it looks like.
So it is no longer multiplatform - we will have to code for flash on pc and html5 for mobile devices - is that right or will there be some kind of packager that will export our flash to html5
    Just a few questions

I don't work for Adobe so my understanding may not be 100% accurate but here we go...
    1. Is AIR still going to be used for cross platform deployment as that is what I am using now ie: will it be used to deploy html5 apps/programmes?
Adobe will be concentrating on developing AIR for packaging  apps for mobile devices. AIR is ActionScript based and it does not produce HTML5 apps.
    2. What tool/IDE will adobe be using for html5 - flash? flex?
HTML5 itself is just a flavour of HTML and therefore Dreamweaver is the Adobe tool for it For Javascript based timeline animation etc, Adobe has Edge http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/edge/
    3. All of our multimedia swfs etc... - can they be exported/used in an html5 environment
Adobe has Wallaby http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/wallaby/ for this - I'm not sure how active the development is lately though. In any case it's impossible to replicate all features of Flash in HTML5.
    4. html5 coding - is it similar to actionscript 3 ie: do we have to start all over again - back to school?
Again HTML5 itself is just a simple set of HTML tags. JavaScript is very similar to ActionScript, as AS is based on JavaScript (ECMAScript). For example HTML5 Canvas drawing API is very similar to AS3 drawing API. Therefore if you know AS, at least you know the basics of JS syntax.
    5. Games coded with actionscript 3. Can these games be exported to html5 or must they be rewritten?
If you want it to run on browsers, yes. If you want to convert into apps then AIR does that.

  • A few questions about the installation

    Hi,
Our block of flats has just been upgraded to Infinity - I think it's likely to be FTTP as we have a fibre optic 'pullback' cable running around each floor outside the flats.
We have not yet been able to order the service but I have a few questions anyway. Apologies for the lengthy nature but my partner and I are trying to explore all options with regards to installation.
As it's likely FTTP do we need to have the modem in the same place as the existing master socket. Reading this it seems that we could have the modem located in a different place and have some Cat5e/Cat6 cables run prior to installation to link the modem to the router (which would remain near the master socket). Is that something that's feasible?
If we have to route the fibre cable through to the lounge, what lengths will the engineer go to in order to aid a discrete run? Can they do things like routing through drywall voids where accessible without structural work beyond drilling a hole? Ideally we would need to drill some holes anyway, are they happy doing more than just the one to bring the cable into the flat?
If the engineer is not able to be overtly flexible, can additional cabling be left in a loop with a view to us conducting future work, things like burying the cable into the drywall? Can the cable even be moved once it's connected to the modem? Does moving the modem cost?
Hopefully someone will be able to advise. It's been a long battle to get the infrastructure put into place and I'm looking forward to getting access to Infinity as soon as possible
    Thank you for any replies

My understanding is that you don't even need a phone line for fibre therefore you don't need a master socket. That being the case, if you do have a phone line then master socket does not need to be anywhere near the fibre modem. You will find that usually you will have to have a phone line installed as part of the package.
EDIT: You should run Ethernet cable from where the modem will be placed to where you want the homehub/router sited.

  • [SOLVED]LXQT Desktop Environment, few questions.

Welcome everyone. I know it is maybe a little bit to soon but i've got few questions.
I'm searching for modern and good looking desktop necessairly lightweight and smooth. There is of course enlightenment (trying, didn't like this' strange look with very strange panel), Mate (based on GTK2 so no), Hawaii (i've got no idea how to install it, something is not installing properly in yaourt but this would be the best choice because of qt5), Pantheon (didn't try that but i don't think so this is lightweight) and LXQT which is OK but i've got few question.
First of all, this will be added to official arch repo or users will be forced to use not comfortable yaourt install?
Is this environment will be ported to qt5?
Another question not related with LXQT is this,  XFCE look like desktop from 90's (don't understand me wrong) it's great enviroment but this modern look is missing.
Maybe it is not the best place to ask about all these things but maybe you know more than i do.

It's not even released yet, so you're a bit premature. My guess would be that it will turn up in community at some stage after iits release, just as lxde did.

    Ask the developers.

    Not a question.

  • [SOLVED] A few questions about partitions

    Hi,
I'm using Windows XP as my primary OS atm. Last year I installed Linux Mint and got it working nicely along with XP, but now I want to try Arch. I have two hard disks - a 320GB SATA2 one and a secondary 80GB IDE one. I've separated about 50GB of the largest for Mint, and I'd like to use these for Arch. Thing is, I'm not sure how I partitioned my HD (I think Mint automated most of it) and I'm scared that I'll screw up. I ran fdisk -l with the Arch CD as suggested by the Beginner's Guide, and here's more or less what I got:
Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 * 1 32059 257513886 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sdb2 32060 38913 55054755 5 Extended
    /dev/sdb5 32060 38627 52757428+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sdb6 38628 38913 2297263+ 82 Linux swap/solaris
    A few questions:
-> I assume sdb1 is where Windows is, and sdb2, 5 and 6 are Mint's. Is that correct? Why are there no sdb3 and 4?
-> If I understand it correctly, hdX means a partition in an IDE disk, and sdX means one in a SATA disk. Is that right? If so, why don't I have an hda (which would be the 80GB HD) partition, and why do I have sdbs instead of sdas?
-> When installing Arch, should I delete Mint's partitions and make new ones, or use the ones it already created?
-> If I decide to start using Arch as my primary OS in the future, will it be possible to resize its home partition?
Thank you very much and sorry for my cluelessness.

My guess is because you made the second partion extended. normally 1,2,3,4 will be primary or one will be marked extended. It probably skipped 3 and 4 since you didn't create anymore primary partitions.
Caio wrote:-> If I understand it correctly, hdX means a partition in an IDE disk, and sdX means one in a SATA disk. Is that right? If so, why don't I have an hda (which would be the 80GB HD) partition, and why do I have sdbs instead of sdas?
With the new libata driver they all show up as sd?, so no this rule isn't correct.
Caio wrote:-> When installing Arch, should I delete Mint's partitions and make new ones, or use the ones it already created?
I would reformat the partitions, but if they are how you want them then you should just leave the partition table untouched. By reformat them I mean recreate the filesystem.

It looks like you do not have a separate home partition. My guess is you have your windows partition, the extended, and then that is broken into one large partition for / and then swap at the end.
Edit: Oh I should have pointed out, normally arch creates a separate /home partition, if you want this you will have to restructure your extended partitions. This isn't necessary though, it's a preferance thing, there pros/cons to going either route.

  • A few questions re: installing 10g on a virtual linux machine

I am in the process of building up a virtual linux box on my XP laptop and have a few questions regarding the networking setup. Purpose is to have a sandbox *nix setup at my fingertips.
Here's what I have so far:
Dell Latitude laptop running Win XP. This is a DHCP machine.
    Installed VMWare Player
Created virtual machine with OEL 4.8, with NAT network config
So far, so good. Next step is to install 10.2.0.4 EE on the virtual Linux machine. When installing 10.2.0.4 directly on the XP system, of course I had to install a loopback adapter to provide a fixed IP address for Oracle, all well documented in the installation guide. While it is my understanding that the loopback adapter, as installed and configured on Windows, is primarily a Windows issue, I would expect something of the same fundamental under Linux insomuch as it is still a dhcp machine. However, when checking the relevant installation guide, the section on networking considerations and DHCP simply gave a two-paragraph discussion of what DHCP was. I found no discussion on how to deal with it in a *nix environment.
This particular vmware setup gives me a choice of 3 network configs - Bridged , NAT, or host-only (private vitrual net shared only with the host) I am currently configured to use NAT because I need outside connectivity (to yum server, etc) but do not want an additional device (ip address) on the real network. I'm guessing I could use host-only most of the time and when I need to access the internet, shut down the db and switch back to NAT.
This is all new territory for me, so I guess I'm looking at some 'best practices' advice as much as anything.

    Ed,
I would encourage going for OEL 5u2 or 5u3 and including the oracle-validated package. It makes sure you have all the prerequisites for 10gR2 and makes life much easier.
I set up dozens of these machines for Oracle U classes. What I started with originally is 2 virtual NIC - a NAT and a Bridged. The Bridged allowed me to access the outside world at any time and was assigned using DHCP from the local network. The NAT I'd configure manually as a static IP, and I used it primarily to provide a second 'virtual network' so the classroom machines could communicate with each other.
In my latest iteration, I've dropped back to a single Bridged NIC based on DHCP. For Oracle install purposes, I
    - pick a hostname (myhost.oraclass.com)
    - switch to static IP (I've scripted it - edits /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/syscfg/network : hostname) but using the network GUI tool is ok as well
    - I choose the static to macth the DHCP address assigned
    - inject a single line into the /etc/hosts with the new static address, the hostname, and a hostname that I want to publish
    192.168.4.21 myhost.oraclass.com orahost student21.oraclass.com student21
    - set a global env variable (/etc/profile.d/oraprofile.sh (export HOSTNAME=myhost.oraclass.com)
and after installing Oracle, I switch back to DHCP. Then if I want to travel, I can easily switch the 'static' address as often as I want (also scripted) to match the IP addr the 'host DHCP' provides.
I've used the NAT. It hands out a DHCP address and usually it works for me (and Oracle) simply by making it static (as above) and letting VMWare container handle it. But every once in a while it seems to 'jam up' and I'd need to fight with it. So I've converted to bridged .. with the help of some scripts I've written.

  • Want to use a Firewire external drive as my boot drive, few questions thoug

I have an old second gen ppc mini. My hard drive just died. It's been on it's last legs for months, but today it finally stopped booting totally. Ran a hardware test and the drive is bad.
Instead of having to open it, I'd rather just buy an external firewire drive. The prices are easily comparable to an internal anyway. That brings up a few questions.
    1. From research on the apple discussions and just good old google, I'm finding it's mostly viable to use an external drive as a boot device, anything I should know?
    2. From what I remember, when OS X is installed, the installer asks for drive to install OS to. If I select the firewire drive will it then remember that drive as the boot device, after the install is finished? I don't want to have to select it each time the machine reboots.
    3. What happens with the bad internal hard drive? Can it just stay there? Since it's bad will it interfere with the mini operation? I'd rather not have to open the case.
    4. Anything special about the external drive that I need to know? I found this one on buy.com...
    http://www.buy.com/prod/fd-titanium-ii-firewire-usb-2-0-hard-drive-320gb-7200rpm -ieee-1394a/q/loc/101/203405880.html
    Any problem with that one?
I guess if there's anything I'm not thinking of, please let me know.
    Thanks...

If I were going to use an external hard drive, I would buy the case from http://www.macsales.com (one example is http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW91UAL1K/ ) then buy a hard drive and put it in. The hard drive, depending on manufacturer, will have either a 3 year or 5 year (Seagate is the only one warrantied for 5 years) warranty, unlike the prepackaged units that have a 1 year warranty. Also, if you can get an external case which uses any of the Oxford chipsets, they work well with our macs. Also, some people like the ministack for mac mini usage: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
You can define in system preferences, in startup disk, which hard drive you want the system to boot from.

  • RF Transactions LM##....Few Questions

    Hi Folks,
One of our client wants RF integration with SAP, mainly for warehouse related activities .
We have suggested him ITS approach .
Few questions I am having :
    1. Are LM## - RF transactions enough to cater the full warehouse process ? Is any LM transaction exists for bin to bin movement ?
    2. If LM transactions are not able to solve our full purpose . what should be the ideal approach for extending the solution?
    3. Do we need to create the html template and services for all RF transactions - LM## ? or just by creating the service and template of LM00 will work ? As i can see just by creating ITS service of LM00 we areable to access the all transactions
    4. Lay out is coming in different fashion in different devices ? How to solve this issue ?
    5. What are the areas needs to be looked on at development time for ITS approach .
    Regards,

    Hi,
    Regarding your questions:
    1) the existing LM transaction cover the WM processes in basic. In practice, new transaction and new screens are developed. There is no standard LM transaction for bin-bin movement, so you need to develop this yourselfs.
    2) get an ABAP'er and develop the transactions and screens yourself (happens all the time);
    3) I've only used SAPconsole, in that case you install SAPconsole and a Telnet server. Then your'e done and you can start up LM00 (I've only used character based hardware)
    4) & 5), no answer.

  • Change of software - a few questions

    Hello everyone,
So here I am - yet another editor disgusted by the release of Final Cut Pro X - exploring Adobe Premiere Pro.
Now I am really impressed with the looks and feel of Premiere. I use to cut away on Premiere 2.0. From there I picked up Final Cut Pro and never really got back until doomsday - last week. Great to see the work Adobe has put in to the software, they seem to really believe in it. My compliments.
However, I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help me answer. If an question was already posted I apologize, but I find the forum to be very chaotic.
    What's to know;
I work on a  Mac Pro from early 2009 - 8 core, hyperthreaded machine with 12 GB of DDR3 RAM. I have four monitors of which two are referential and work with the BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme.
I am also very sexy which might bring confusion to the program I suppose.
    Question one:
Coming from Final Cut Pro I am used to the Apple Pro Res workflow and I like it - A LOT. The render quality compared to it's file sizes is amazing. Is there anyway to work with Pro Res in Premiere Pro?
    Question two:
I know Premiere Pro to be 64 bits but when I render my cores won't go over 35% usage. How do I get it to render for the full 100%?
    Question three:
I work with XDCam EX material. However, if I want my sequense to have playback over the BlackMagic devices I need to work in a BlackMagic codec sequense. I have all the latest drivers and I can work in a Pro Res or XDCam EX codec sequense in Final Cut and it will playback just fine. Now of course, you can say - well the blackmagic timeline seems to be a fine workaround - but then of course I have to render everything I put in there. Quite unnessesary. Is there anyway to set my timeline to an XDCam codec (or Pro Res if question one gets answered positifly )?
    Question four:
I notice that whenever I return to Premiere Pro from another program (say via CMD + Tab) it freezes up for some time. Everytime. Frustrating. Is this a common problem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
    Question five:
After I import media (thank God for XML support!) Premiere Pro starts generating Peak Files. I read somewhere that it's supposed to be a background proces so that eachtime I do something in the timeline it stops and gives full core and ram power to where I need it. However, I find that it just keeps going and makes Premiere Pro really unresponsive and slow. Anyway to fix this?
    Question six:
Why does Final Cut X suck so badly?
    I think that's it for now .
Hope you can answere these questions all positivly... oh - Questions seven: why is there no dictionary functionality in this text editor??
    Kind regards,
    Wesley Blokker.
PS: If you like check out my work here: http://vimeo.com/eclipseav/videos

    Question one:
Coming from Final Cut Pro  I am used to the Apple Pro Res workflow and I like it - A LOT. The  render quality compared to it's file sizes is amazing. Is there anyway  to work with Pro Res in Premiere Pro?
You bet: import it, and edit. Check out this thread: Apple ProRes workflow in premiere pro?
    Okidoki, thanks mate.
    Question two:
I know Premiere Pro to be  64 bits but when I render my cores won't go over 35% usage. How do I  get it to render for the full 100%?
    What do you mean
by "render?" Are you referring to rendering previews? Exporting? A lot
of it can be influenced by the source footage, the destination format,
the effects you're using, etc. The bottom line is that you won't always
get full-tilt boogie rendering, regardless of the app being 64-bit. In
fact, if you're working with ProRes, you're actually limited to
32-bitness, since Premiere must use QuickTime for decoding of that
format, and QT is only 32-bit. That's more than likely the bottleneck
    you're encountering.
Well I mean rendering your timeline for smooth previews. My footage is XDCam EX 35mb/s material at 1080p25 and comes of a RAID (e-sata) via a server and ethernet cables. However at the moment I am not working with Pro Res since I didn't know you could. I keep the original source footage and place it in a BlackMagic timeline because otherwise I cannot playback via my BM card.
    Don't
worry so much about rendering in Premiere Pro; there's no need to the
vast majority of the time. Even if you're seeing a red bar, that's only
saying that you might need to render to get real-time playback.
Most of my sequences have red bars due to the footage and effects I
use, and I still get rippin' real-time playback. Naturally, on export,
your footage will be rendered, but that's an unavoidable
necessity. Ultimately, sequences work a bit differently in PPro than in
FCP: you can plunk anything you like into a PPro sequence, and it won't
try to render it in the background to conform it to the sequence. Just
    edit and be happy
That doesn't make any sence mate - I have XDCam material right. If I put it in a native sequense, which would be ideal, it won't playback via my BlackMagic monitors. Why is that? The rendering is just another negative aspect of it, but you're right, that don't really matter.
    Question four:
I notice that whenever I return to Premiere Pro from another program (say via CMD + Tab) it freezes up for some time. Everytime. Frustrating. Is this a common problem? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
    There
have been a few reports of this; I can't remember the resolution. You
didn't mention: are you using CS5 or CS5.5? If you're using CS5, make
sure that you're fully updated to version 5.0.4; go to Help > Updates
to check. If you're on CS5.5, the current version is 5.5.0, so there is
likely something else that is the cause. I'm a PC user, so I've not
followed those reports to closely. Here's one thread which says this is
fixed in CS5.5: Adobe Forums: Premiere CS5 post alt-tab freeze
    Unforutatley I'm running 5.0.4.
    The
generation of PEK files and CFA (conformed audio) files is a point of
frustration for most Premiere Pro users. The best bet is to simply let
it finish: usually, it won't take that long. After you import your
media, go grab some coffee or do some jumping jacks or something else
interesting, and let the process finish. Now, if Premiere Pro continues
to generate files, there is something wonky with the media database,
and it usually means purging the PEK/CFA/etc. files and then cleaning
the media cache database. Premiere Pro will have to regenerate the files
(yeah, again), but this time, they'll usually stick. I think it can be a
little touchy if you continue to try to work during this process, and
Premiere Pro can lose track of those files. That's why most of us have
griped again and again for this process to change or go away forever and
    ever.
    Roger that. Thanks.
    Question six:
Why does Final Cut X suck so badly?
    That's a tough one
    I demand to know!
Questions seven: why is there no dictionary functionality in this text editor??
There is; click the little ABC-checkmark button at the top right corner of the text field.
    Aight, thanks
Thanks for your help mate. I hope you can help me solve the BlackMagic problem here and give some more information about the rendering as it's far from optimal.
