[solved] installed KDE - just one audio output possible

hey folks,
i just installed KDE and uninstalled my former XFCE and Gnome.
i finished configuring my system and now i can only have one audio output at a time.
i'm using phonon-vlc and alsa. there are known issues or am i doing something wrong...?
edit: looks like phonon is the problem... clementine and firefox the same time are working...

i remember having the same issue at one time, but after installing pulse it was ok. i think you have to install alsa-utils as well
although i never used phonon-vlc, try the phonon-mplayer which is much better in my opinion.

  • How do I select just one audio channel in Final Cut Pro X?

I know this has been asked and answered somewehre... and I'm pretty sure the answer is simple. But I don't have hour's to search the net.
And the FCPX "Help" feature just ****** me off....
I recorded voice on channel 2 and shotgun nat.sound on channel 1.
I only want the voice track (channel 2) to playback in stereo.
I have already edited the video so I don't want to re-import the raw video to seperate out just the channel 2 voice track.
How do I select just one audio channel in the timeline, then pan it so it plays back in both the L and R channel?
Also, some of the audio was recorded with a air conditioner running in the background.  Any suggestions on best audio filers to remove or lessen it?
    Thanks, Barry

I think you want to select the clip in the Timeline, choose the Inspector and then Audio, dual mono.
You can even do this by selecting multiple clips.
In the Event Browser as well.

  • Adding a plug-in to just one audio file?

    Hello,
I'm really new to Logic Pro and I was curious if there is a way to add a plug-in to just one audio file in a track and not the whole track?  Thanks!

Or you can press 'A' on your computer's keyboard and where it says 'Volume', click and hold to bring up the automation options. Choose 'Bypass' for that plug -in slot and add four nodes to the line by clicking on it in four places. You can get the plug in to be bypassed until the appropriate place that way.

  • TV off audio output possible to external sound system?

One thing i like about ATV2 is the ability to ;isten to my itunes music.
I havnt bought one yet but wanted to know if it is possible and if so how to have the TV turned off and audio outputed to my external speakers? My current speakers are not SPDIF just anolog inputs
It would seem crazy to have to run the TV screen while I was just listening to music. My TV has HDMI inputs and looks like an optical in as well.
Any comments on best way to set this sort of thing up or do I have to have the TV on?

Yes.. If you have a separate av receiver powering your speakers (even if it passes the video signal through). if you just plug external speakers into the TV you turn them off when you turn off the TV.

  • New FIOS install-only one audio channel

FIOS TV is great except that now I only have one audio channel (L) from my old(er) 5.1 Sony Home Theater.   FIOS was installed today replacing an a Direct TV setup which was at least able to play left, center and right (L,C,R).   I have no idea why I only have one speaker playing since the installer used the same plug ins that I had connected to my Direct TV.   Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What kind of cable(s) are you using for the connection to the home theater? Is the cable(s) coming from the Verizon cable box or from the TV?
If you are using two RCA audio cables (red and white), then one may be defective or not fully plugged in. Left is white and right is red, so check the one going to the red connector. You could try swapping the red and white cables. If your setup now has only right channel, the problem is with the "red" cable.
If you are using digital coax or fiber optic cable, then I would suspect the device connected to the home theater (either TV or STB/DVR).

  • Select just one audio channel to edit??

I feel stupid for asking suck such a (seeminly) simple questions.
I recorded the voice track on channel 2 and the shotgun microphone of "natural sound" on channel 1.
I ONLY want to edit with channel 2 (the voice track).  How do I select and edit just one channel (turn off the other channel)?
Also, is there a way to see both waveforms of both audio channels (one turned on and the other turned off?)
    Thanks,  Barry

Another dumb question... If I select Dual Mono how do I select the appropriate channel I want to use?
Right now I DON'T see any tracks or channels, just the drop down.
I do remember that the top option has a drop down with Stero Left/Right and then a Pan control pops up.  Do I select that then pan it to the far left or right?  Or is this a different control?
    Thanks, Barry

  • Recording with just one audio file per track

Is there a way, when recording, to just have one continuous track? When recording a 2nd take on the same track (say track 1), instead of having another separate audio file for the 2nd take, I would like to have just one complete audio file instead of bunches of them. I've looked in Preferences and the menu options and have overlooked it if it's there. I hope I am being clear. Thanks.

    Hey Terry,
I'm not sure why this is a problem - if you think about it its just like recording multiple takes on tape - you then comp the best bits to create the final 'take'.
Also as AA streams direct to disk at some point (ie when you stop recording) AA has to close the file otherwise it would get corrupted.
I guess it just gets a little getting used to?
If I'm gonna do a complete 2nd (3rd, 4th etc) take then I might drag the previous take down on to a muted track (if I think I might use bits out of it) and then re-take - or just delete the previous take and re-record.
At the end I then select File->Delete Unused Media (I think thats what its called). When all takes and mixing is completed I use this application to identify all the unused files that are not needed and that can be safely deleted - http://www.mediasweeper.com.au

  • Problem with multiple applications using one audio output

Hey there, I'm having issues setting up my 5.1 headset seen here (http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/x-tatic-digital) to work with multiple applications.
Right now I have audio streaming from a flash video, when I try run "$ speaker-test -c 6" I get the following error:
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
If I try open another application which uses this device, the first application has its sound cut off.
    2 more things to note:
    - My preference for setup would be audio output through S/PDIF and input through USB, with the USB output disabled (To not waste system resources).
    - I unmuted all channels in ALSA, however when I ran the test only 2 channels seemed to be working (Front L&R), it may have been defaulting to the USB connection, in which case, that explains only 2 channels being in use, is there a method of setting the S/PDIF as default system wide?
Thanks in advance for any help given!

brebs wrote:It's put the comments on multiple lines - fix that.
Woops, I guess my paste messed up, new .asoundrc: http://pastie.org/3706033
I can run both at the same time, however I cannot hear any audio. Do I somehow have to change the default device, if so how can I do that?
    Edit:
    Restarted system now I get:
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is default
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 2048 to 8192
Period size range from 1024 to 1024
    Using max buffer size 8192
    Periods = 4
    was set period_size = 1024
    was set buffer_size = 8192
    0 - Front Left
    Segmentation fault
    (That's with both commands)
    EDIT 2:
Interesting, apparently 2 audio streams are working, however the console thing still doesn't work..?
    EDIT 3:
Didn't last long, now flash crashes and html 5 doesn't work -.-
    EDIT 4:
Flash only works when other audio is active, however it has constant popping sound. I went through the system logs to get the errors of when flash crashes, it's audio crashing it, here's the error:
    Apr  1 02:04:15 localhost kernel: [ 7057.499787] AudioThread[6227]: segfault at 7f2e2f7a8008 ip 00007f2e413a2786 sp 00007f2e33614ae8 error 7 in libasound.so.2.0.0[7f2e4131e000+eb000]

  • [Solved] No more than one audio source at a time.

I used alsa, now I'm using pulseaudio. The exact problem and all errors persist regardless of that.
If any program uses audio, even if it isn't at the moment doing that, I can't use other audio sources. For example, speaker-test says "Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy" when another program that uses audio is running.
When vbox is running, without immediately playing any sound, I also have this problem. But I avoided it lately by setting "Null audio driver" in vbox settings so that I can listen to music while working in windows. Even when speaker-test is running, mpd, youtube, skype, vbox, can't play any sound.
Something maybe worth noting is that I recently had this problem resolved: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=184314 . I don't know if I did some changes back then which are important for this problem.
    Thanks.

Did you install pulseaudio-alsa package? You would need to disable ~/.asoundrc or any other configuration overwriting the redirection of alsa to pulseaudio. Does virtual box work with pulseaudio?
Did you switch to pulseaudio, because of skype?

  • MacBook's Audio outputs for deejaying problem.

    OK. Here's the scenario.
As you all know, the MacBook has one audio output that also serves as a digital output, so it's one or the other. I have that output connected to an amplifier via the digital option. Since I'm going to use the laptop for deejaying, I also bought USB headphones to use as the cue for the DJ software (Torq). The problem I'm having is I can't put two different sources for the Master and the Cue. I can, however, choose one source and specify the channels. For example, I can use channel 1 for Master and channel 2 for Cue and have two mono channels. This doesn't help either because I'm using the digital option for the output to my amplifier. I've also tried SoundFlower to no avail because in the DJ program, there are 2 sources for SoundFlower, one with (2ch) and the other with (16ch).
Any suggestions or anything that will help me solve this problem will be appreciated.
If there are external sound cards or anything of the sort please tell me.

    No help whatsoever? Disappointing.
    Hi,
    I just saw this.
Yes... there are many, many audio devices available that will give you the options you need.
There are both Firewire and USB options.
However, you may be able to get this going with what you have.
In AudioMIDI setup, (in Utilities folder) create a new Aggregate device.
I'm hoping the USB headphones show up there as an audio device.
Basically, you create a new aggregate device, use built-in audio for the Input Device, make it clock master, include all of your output devices then name the Aggregate device.
It should show up in your audio programs and allow you to select what outputs you need.
Don't know if it will work but worth a try.

    Hello!
I have an iMac (running iOS 10.6.8, not upgraded to Lion) that I'm having audio issues with.  I have 5 profiles on this machine.  The audio output will work fine out of one profile, then when switched to another, the profile will not have any audio output at all.  Rebooting the machine will occasionally solve the problem.  Administrator permissions are not the issue since this has also manifested itself on the administrator profile. I've also reset the NVRAM/PRAM and that hasn't helped.  All my software is up to date and I recently upgraded the RAM to 2x2GB sticks.  This problem was existing prior to the RAM upgrade.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tony,
    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • No Audio Output after Upgrading to windows 7; Soundblaster Card is installed

After upgrading to Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), I found that my speakers (which are built into my HP w2207 monitor) are not recognized.  In the notification area I have the speaker with a red x in it, and it says “No Audio Output Device is installed”.
I have a HP Pavilion D4890Y with the Sound Blaster Audigy X-FI 24-Bit Xtreme sound card.  I tried looking in Device Manager, and found “Multimedia Audio Controller” under Other, which states no drivers could be found.
I tried following some of the advice online, and downloaded the latest Realtek High Definition Audio drivers, but and the download seems to run successfully, but I don’t notice any differences.  When I reboot as prompted, I’ve still got the same error.
I then tried forcing the Audio Device to use a Realtek driver, but Windows protests (saying it’s not sure it’s compatable with my device, and I end up with “Realtek High Definition Audio” under “Sound, video and game controllers”, but it has a yellow exclamation point.  If I click properties, the device status says “This device cannot start (Code 10).” If I try to update the driver I get the message that it cannot find the driver software.   If I uninstall the driver I’m back to the original problem (multimedia audio controller under original devices, with no known drivers).
I also tried downloading various files from the Creative site, but it’s not clear which one to use, and the 4 or 5 different ones I tried (including their recommended beta version for Windows 7), when each of them opens it says it can’t find any supported devices.
    Suggestions?  Thanks!

    Hi,
"If the driver is a previous revision install it using the TROUBLESHOOT COMPATIBILITY tool that is part of the Windows 7 OS.
To use the tool, uninstall any drivers for the sound card you show listed in Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall Programs  list.  Delete the Device from Device Manager.
Download the revision of the driver from www.creative.com  website to a folder you've created and placed on your desktop.
After the driver is downloaded, navigate to the "setup.exe" of the driver and Right Click - select Troubleshoot Compatibility  ----
Let the compatibility tool select a possible solution then use its suggestion of TRY RECOMMENDED WINDOWS SETTINGS, if it does not find a solution it will submit only CUSTOMIZE SETTINGS and let you install it as you designate."
The preceding information comes from a Microsoft Windows 7 forum regarding an issue similar to yours.
the information you provided did verify that it is a sound blaster XiFi Extreme card as checked against the Vendor / Device list.

  • [SOLVED] Only HDMI/Displayport audio outputs; no sound from speakers

I have a Dell XPS14 running Arch, which has worked fine for a while, but now has suddenly stopped detecting the internal speakers and headphones, so it will not play sound.   I have tried a few things to narrow down the problem, but I've had no luck so far.  In GNOME shell, when I press the physical volume up/down buttons on my laptop, it displays a sound icon with "HDMI / DisplayPort" underneath . When I go into the gnome shell audio settings menu, everything is greyed out, and no output devices are listed.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how I might go about troubleshooting it from here, I would appreciate it.
One thing that struck me was that I had installed a music player, Clementine, recently, and I'm not sure if I did or did not ever have sound after that. I installed Clementine and two optional gstreamer0.10 plugins (bad and ugly). Since this seemed like it would be possibly related, I've since removed Clementine, the new gstreamer plugins, and all of their dependencies not needed by any other package. So I now don't think that is likely to be the problem. Just to be thorough, though, here are the packages which were installed:

Thanks again for the info and suggestions.  I thought the same thing regarding the sparse output of alsamixer, but since I never had trouble with the sound before, I don't know how much would have shown up when everything was working well.
I still haven't really found a smoking gun here, unfortunately.  As far as I can tell, the power saving settings look about right, because the power saving settings for the HDMI audio (which works) looks to be the same as the others.
Thanks for the link with more information regarding the module options for the intel sound driver.  I'm going to dig into those when I have time next week.  The thing that makes me less optimistic that I'm going to fix it with module options is that I can't figure out how those module options would suddenly change.
I'm also going to try out the linux-lts kernel to see if it behaves any differently, and then maybe boot another distro with a usb key to see if it works, and if so, what looks different.
Here's what I get from the suggested tests. Let me know if anyone sees something strange that I missed.
