[SOLVED] Installing Calalyst driver, with Radeon HD 2600

My iMac crashes  to a gray screen when I try to startx.
This situation arose about a month ago after doing a big upgrade, as I hadn't been able to upgrade with pacman & yaourt for the previous month.
I saw the problem as being caused by the upgraded Catalyst drivers/utils, in combination with the x.server upgrade.
Anyway, yesterday I upgraded all again, & then removed the Catalyst driver & utils, then followed the Arch wiki regarding installing the open drivers for my radeon HD card.
After installing the open drivers I could once again load Openbox & see my beloved Arch again.  BUT, it is too laggy to use.  I could watch a movie on the machine, which was somewhat jerky at times but watchable.  Scrolling in Firefox is so delayed that I can't live with it.
I followed the Arch wiki instructions for optimizing the open driver; doing one thing at a time & restarting x, to test, but they did not help the situation.
So, (at long last )  my question is, will I be buying into trouble by downgrading X & using the previous version of the Catalyst drivers & utils?
I have to ask the question as I really am no Linux tech' wizard.
I was very happy with the way Arch was working for me over the previous year or so.

I just tried to remove libgl & get a pile of errors telling me that 5 different packages require it?
I tried the -f as well, it had no effect.
The errors were  as follows:
error:failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: ati-dri: requires libgl>=7.4.2
:: capseo: requires libgl
:: mesa: requires libgl
:: xorg-server: requires libgl
:: xorg-utils: requires libgl
So I then did a -Rfd libgl  which removed it.
After which I did another -S catalyst which certainly did a lot more than my previous attempts, though it left me with the following error as its last line:
missing dependency for ati-dri : libgl>=7.4.2
I'll now check if it works?
After a warm boot, things are looking good.
Thanks for your kind & descriptive help  Uruz2012.
It is amazing just how few words of help it can take to make a totally useless computer system fully functional again.   Now  I can escape from the Leopard install that I have been forced to use on this machine, prior to my finally getting serious about attempting to fix it.
Thanks so much, again, for your help in healing my computer...

  • Lion graphics extremely slow with Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB

    Made a clean install with Lion and it now turns out that the graphics (Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB) on my Core 2 Duo iMac are way to slow (or insufficient VRAM) for the Lion UI.
    Especially fullscreen apps animations and opening Launchpad folders are extremely choppy. Not much fun the way it is.
    I mean come on, a mac, which can play WoW pretty well should be able to push 2D Graphics around, right?
    When booting up the UI is fast, but after letting the iMac on for a while or waking it from sleep the graphics are choppy again.
    Anyone else having this problem?

  • [SOLVED]Installing it87 driver for lm_sensors support

    Hello,
    I've done much research on how to properly install an update it87 driver that could make 0x8620 work.
    I ran sensors-detect and ran into this:
    # sensors-detect revision 6209 (2014-01-14 22:51:58 +0100)
    # System: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z97X-Gaming 7
    This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
    to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
    and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
    unless you know what you're doing.
    Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
    Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): y

    Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
    standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.

    Some systems (mainly servers) implement IPMI, a set of common interfaces
    through which system health data may be retrieved, amongst other things.
    We first try to get the information from SMBIOS. If we don't find it
    there, we have to read from arbitrary I/O ports to probe for such
    interfaces. This is normally safe. Do you want to scan for IPMI
    interfaces? (YES/no): y
    # DMI data unavailable, please consider installing dmidecode 2.7

    Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
    We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
    safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any

    Probing for `Winbond W83782D' at 0x290... No
    Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
    monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
    reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
    on some systems.
    Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): y

    Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
    Just press ENTER to continue:
    Driver `coretemp':

    Do you want to overwrite /etc/conf.d/lm_sensors? (YES/no):

    Unloading i2c-dev... OK
    Unloading cpuid... OK
    So I did some research and found that this was updated and available as a potential driver for my MOBO:
    http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices
    You will see the IT8620E which covers the unknown chip lm_sensors found.
    I downloaded the file, extracted it and tried to do a
    sudo make
    but I ran into an error because it was looking for
    KERNEL_BUILD := /usr/src/linux-headers-$(TARGET)
    which is NOT in that directory. I installed the linux-headers and saw that it adds files to
    /lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH
    . I modified the Makefile and it got past that part but it ran into another error during
    make install
    After much frustration I looked and saw
    usr/lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko.gz
    so now I'm questioning if I even need to install this driver or if I need to update it. Is there a way to learn more about these drivers that come in the linux package?
    I can't find anything concrete on how to make this work. I'm just trying to add my fan speeds and other junk to my conky!
    Edit:
    modinfo it87 gave me this result:
    filename: /lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko.gz
    license: GPL
    description: IT8705F/IT871xF/IT872xF hardware monitoring driver

    parm: update_vbat:Update vbat if set else return powerup value (bool)
    parm: fix_pwm_polarity:Force PWM polarity to active high (DANGEROUS) (bool)
    So, this tells me that this driver does not cover 8620.

    Update:
    I believe after some researching and actually going for it that I managed to install the it87 test driver.
    I modified the Makefile on this line:
    KERNEL_BUILD := /lib/modules/$(TARGET)/build
    And when it failed on this line:
    SYSTEM_MAP := /boot/System.map-$(TARGET)
    I did:
    sudo cp /proc/kallsyms /boot/System.map-`uname -r`
    Because Arch doesn't put this file there because it isn't needed to boot...I think.
    Either way it finished and I was able to use the lm_sensors.

  • HP Envy 5532 Printer - unable to install a driver with full functionality

    Hi we have purchased a HP Envy 5532 all-in-one and were advised (and as stated on the packaging) that it will print 2 sided automatically.
    So far we have followed the instructions on various sites but we do not appear to have the option in the printer's Preferences  to be able to select 2 sided printing from the drop down list on the layout screen as there is no drop down list in there to select from as illustrated in the screen grab below:
    The options to the left of the screen grab allow me to select a manual 2 sided option where it will prompt us to reload the paper manually but no automatic options?
    Our operating system is: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and we have been on www.hp.com and downloaded the appropriate driverfor this environment.
    The driver currently installed is: HP Envy 5530 Series Class Driver - the driver would not install off the disk which came with the printer so this was the recommended official download via the HP website
    We have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor supplied on HP Connected it found issues with the driver "the Driver does not have full functions installed" and attempted to download a fully featured driver - this has failed again and again.... to load
    We then downloaded and ran the "HP Installation failure unknown device" application and followed this to the letter 5 times!!! all this did was to stop the printer working at all. It ran until the install stage and then it keeps coming up unable to install on network - the printer is there on our network with an IP address???
    We disabled all Firewalls and ran the install without any start up items running via misconfig options as directed but still it fails at the same point on installation.
    We had to uninstall all HP drivers and let the PC "add a printer" via the Control Panel options which it has and we are able to print again but we do not have full functionality as we still can not print automatic 2 sided copies and when we run HP Print and Scan Doctor it still recognises that we do not have full functionality!!!
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks  Steve

    @Steve_Reeder, welcome to the Community
    I read through your post about how you do not have access to the full software and options for your Envy 5532, as the Full Feature driver is not installing successfully on your Windows 8.1 system. I saw that you have tried various troubleshooting steps, such as a Clean Boot (msconfig), the Print and Scan Doctor, etc.
    I will do my best to make some helpful suggestions to you to try out.
    It seems as though you are trying to install on your network, could you possibly try installing the printer as a USB connection, and afterwards converting the USB connection to wireless through the HP software (applies to wireless connection and not ethernet)? If you're installing ethernet, skip this suggestion.
    You could also try installing the printer under a Clean Boot (msconfig) and turn off your firewall, under a new user account with Admin Privileges, to see if that will work.
    Another idea would be to run the System File Checker to see if this scan will pick up any issues:
    Using System File Checker to Restore System Files
    Please let me know your findings thus far, and if you notice any error messages or codes, let me know all of the details.
    I hope to hear from you, enjoy your Wednesday

  • Detecting an installed printer-driver with jdk 1.3

    Hi all,
    is there anybody who knows how to detect all installed printers and how to figure out which printer is choosen by user? I can not find anything about this topic...
    Thank you in advance - netti

    John,
    In the case of the R800, 3.0 has been around for about one year. However, 3.09 was first posted to Epson Europe on 29 October 07 and 6 November 07 to Epson Oceania (Australia and New Zealand). The driver is supposed to be fully compatible with Leopard, but I have no way of checking. According to both Europe and Oceania, drivers for the remaining R series printers (1800, 1900 and 2400) are due out later this month.

  • [SOLVED] install arch VM with pacstrap

    Dear all,
    I am installing a Arch VM on my Arch host. The host is up-to-date, well configured (at least I think) in a vanilla manner (no suspicious hacks).

  • [SOLVED] installing b43 driver

    #Edit: got this fixed; please see post 9 for an easy solution if you have the same problem & don't want to read the whole (probably confusing) thread.
    Hi everyone,
    Tried to install my wifi multiple times... and it's being super annoying.
    I'm using a Packard Bell Dot S (Model Kav60) and it has a
    01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
    so basically a BCM 4312 driver.
    The computer "told" me to use https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/b43, but that link linked to an older site, so I used http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/
    I've tried installing b43-cutter, but I am stuck on the place where it says:
    If verification of the GPG signature fails due to an unknown key, you need to import the following key:
    Key ID = 4203454C
    Key fingerprint = 757F AB7C ED18 14AE 15B4  836E 5FB0 2747 4203 454C
    I don't know how to import it, and it doesn't explain how.
    Would one of you explain how to do that?
    That would be great!
    (P.S. it's quite possible there will be more questions after, as I don't know if installing b43-fwcutter will work & also I'll have to activate the network...)

    Hmm good point about the AUR. The method I was trying to use didn't use the AUR package & I think it might be outdated...
    The computer "told" me to use those websites
    When I do this ... as well as on boot up...
    dmesg | grep firmware

    Thank you for suggestions.
    I have checked this out: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless (as well as other pages)
    What confused me is that some people disagree about some of the info on there, as the page seems to show... as well as the fact that these manuals just don't deal with all the detailed steps in detail (I am a newbie...)
    But basically, when installing b43 according to the instructions from http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/ a there is gpg verification problem.
    I encounter the problem after step 2:
       1 wget http://bues.ch/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2 http://bues.ch/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutte … ar.bz2.asc
       2 gpg --verify b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2.asc
    "gpg: assuming signed data in 'b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2'
    gpg: Signature made Mon 29 Jul 2013 21:22:47 CEST using RSA key ID 4203454C
    gpg: Can't check signature: No public key"
    I've tried using packer as well (which uses the AUR), but am currently following the method on http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/ as I mentioned.
    To be honest all the different information out there is confusing!
    I'll try to use the AUR without packer, and see what happens.
    Thank you

    See this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=177651. Basically, get new firmware (link in that thread), the current firmware is very buggy.
    Edit: The linux-firmware package in Arch was updated today, it contains the new firmware, so when you install Arch you'll have it already. But the install media still has the old buggy version. Next month's install media will work fine out-of-the-box.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel 4.0 with Radeon HD problem: Purple Line

    Hi All,
    This is my first post on the Arch forums! and probably going to get flamed a bit too as this is not an Arch specific problem. I am just hoping you guys will be able to help point me in to the right direction. The reason I am posting here on the Arch forums as it does affect Arch Linux now the kernel package has ticked over to 4.0.
    The problem, is that after updating to Kernel 4.0, there is now a vertical purple line on the left hand side of my screen as soon as X is started - when using HDMI. I believe the problem lies in the Kernel, how would I go about reporting a potential kernel bug and what kind of logs (and how) would they expect me to provide?
    My hardware (Radeon HD 6570):
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Turks PRO [Radeon HD 6570/7570/8550]
    It works perfectly on 3.19 but 4.0 and 4.1-rc the purple line is present. In addition to the purple line, the display is not quite as crisp - slightly blurry.
    I am using open source drivers - I have tried Mesa 10.5 and 10.6 (development) makes no difference.
    Have tried on both Arch Linux and Linux Mint - again distro makes no difference.
    Only happens when using HDMI out, VGA is fine.

    I'm also having video issues since updating to kernel 4.0.1.  A lot of video tearing and "glitching".  I have a Radeon card as well:
    $ lspci | grep Radeon
    05:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XTX [Radeon HD 8890M / R9 M275X] (rev ff)
    I'm going to try and downgrade my kernel to confirm if that's the cause.  There weren't many other packages that upgraded, though...
    **EDIT**  The kernel is definitely the issue, or at least something conflicting with the kernel.  I'm having bad luck.  This is the second package upgrade in a week to make my system screwy (wpa_supplicant being the first).
    Unfortunately, I'm not real sure myself on how to go about filing an effective bug report.  Once more info on that is forthcoming, I'll re-upgrade my kernel and provide any relevant logs, etc.  Or file a separate report if the issues aren't closely related.  Thanks!

    Ok, so I tried the command in the howto like Lone_Wolf suggested, and it gave me the output:
    [d0ublemur@LinuxBox ~/Downloads/EVE_OFFLINE_INSTALLER_FILES]$ wine EVE_Oline_Installer*.exe
    wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\EVE_Oline_Installer*.exe"
    [d0ublemur@LinuxBox ~/Downloads/EVE_OFFLINE_INSTALLER_FILES]$ fixme:ole:RemUnknown_QueryInterface No interface for iid {00000019-0000-0000-c000-000000000046}
    I thought that the "Eve_Oline_Installer" was a typo so i tried
    wine Eve_Online_Installer*.exe
    and the same thing happened:
    [d0ublemur@LinuxBox ~/Downloads/EVE_OFFLINE_INSTALLER_FILES]$ wine EVE_Online_Installer*.exe
    wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\EVE_Online_Installer*.exe"
    [d0ublemur@LinuxBox ~/Downloads/EVE_OFFLINE_INSTALLER_FILES]$ fixme:ole:RemUnknown_QueryInterface No interface for iid {00000019-0000-0000-c000-000000000046}

  • [pavilion g7-2116sr] How can I use amd driver with only integrated graphic?

     Radeon hd 7670m is disabled coz it's broken. Amd driver don't work. Windows use vgasave driver. How can i use amd driver with radeon hd7660g?
    P.S.  Sorry, my english isn't good(

    Hi @Leys
    I see you are stilll unsuccessful installing the drivers as you get the blue screen.
    Here is a link to Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP) that may help.
    Here is a link to Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista) to determine if your graphic card is defective.
    If the graphic card fails, here is a link to the HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. Please note page 9 or chapter 1 page 9 for a list of recommended replacement graphic cards.
    If the graphic card passes you may wish to consider doing a restore back to a known good time or a full recovery back to factory.
    Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7)
    Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)
    During the recovery process there is an option to backup your personal files to prevent data loss.  If you have not done one yet I suggest you do one now.
    Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7)

  • Howto install broadcom wl with custom kernel

    Hi I am trying to install the broadcom-wl driver from a custom kernel made traditionnal way.
    The makefile they provide give me this :
    KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`
    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/maxime/kernelbuild/linux-3.10.10'
    Wireless Extension is the only possible API for this kernel version
    Using Wireless Extension API
      CC [M]  /home/maxime/wldriver/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.o
    In file included from /home/maxime/wldriver/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c:43:0:

    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/maxime/kernelbuild/linux-3.10.10'
    make: *** [all] Error 2
    I have change the path in wl_linux.o to include system.h with the full path(as you can see). And it can find it, but I have to change all the path for every <include> wich is very long and i am not sure it s the right way.
    I tried to install the driver with yaourt and it installs the .ko . in my extramodules folder in my /lib/modules/ directory. but modprobe wl report no such file.
    But if i come back to the precompiled kernel it works. I ve tried to change the kernel version to my current version in extramodules in /lib/modules/extramodules-3.10 that the PKGBUILD is looking at and try to install it again with yaourt on my custom kernel but still the same.
    I copied the .ko to my kernel 3.10.10 custom and tried modprob and I got a symlink error.
    As they said i need to modprob the  cfg80211, which i did but I still get the same error.
    Howto build package for my custom kernel and not the default kernel while I am on the custom kernel ??
