[solved] Installing MS fonts breaks non-Latin character display

Hello,
  I just installed the standard Windows 7 font-set by directly copying it into "/usr/share/fonts/Windows/"; now, various scripts -- including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and many others -- display as blank squares.  I have a number of unusual things installed, including the infinality-bundle and a large number of obscure manually installed fonts (to achieve complete unicode coverage).  This isn't the first time new fonts have broken things (I had to remove cardo.ttf because it replaces runic glyphs with its own placeholder) but it is the most severe.  I don't want to remove either infinality or the ms fonts, but can't find out what to modify in order to make them play nice.  The goal is to have the system primarily use Windows fonts (especially for web browsing), and fall back on the Linux fonts for unusual characters.  Fontconfig is confusingly documented.  Could anyone give me a push in the right direction?  Thank you all.
On a related note; if anyone knows a good, cohesive set of fonts that cover the entire Unicode standard, I would be in tears of joy.

... Yes, something is definitely wrong with this picture.

  • Non-Latin Character Display On Web Page

    In a Java web application, only one non-Latin character display issue is that when they are typied into a JSP file. Otherwise, non-Latin characters display correctly from the message property file or from database.
    Anyone know how to solve it?
    Thanks.

    Just need to have the JSP page tag on the related JSP file.

    Welcome to our community, Denise
    Perhaps check the names of all the files involved? What type
    of web server are you using?
    You say that your co-worker said she is linking to the skin
    file from a .htm page, but what is missing here is whether she is
    using the .HTM page you provided in the mix or if it's one she
    created herself. If it's one she created herself, that may be the
    issue.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Non-Latin Character Display

    I have several Java web applications on Tomcat where non-Latin characters function properly with only one exception. Non-Latin characters, Chinese in this case, can be displayed properly thorough the JSTL message tag. The related configuration are followings:
    HTML: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    JSP: <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=UTF-8" language="java" %>
    The applications can take Chinese character inputs correctly with a filter of converting request character encoding to "UTF-8".
    The only problem is that Chinese characters don't displayed properly when they are directly typied on a JSP file. I have set the Eclipse file text encoding to utf-8 and the characters are shown correctly in the IDE.
    I believe that is a TC configuration related issue. After having "set JAVA_OPTS= -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8" in the catalina.bat file, nothing has changed.
    How to solve this problem?

  • Hot Sync with Non-latin Character Display Problem

    I have a XP Home Desktop with Palm Desktop 4.01 installed. When I do a hot sync with my Sony Clie T655C, the chinese characters are display correctly in both XP home Desktop and the Clie.
    Now, I have a netbook with window7 Starter installed for travelling use. It took me a while to resolve the problem on the hotsync with window 7 starter and sony clie. At the end, I have Palm desktop v6.2 and Palmhotsyncsetup from pimlico on the netbook. I am able to do a hotsync with cradle/cable, but not through network (with TCP/IP not listen error message).
    I have installed the chinese, English, french IME for the window 7 Starter netbook. I am able to type Chinese character in Notepad and Word and display the character correctly. I am able to save the file ( filename in both chinese and english character), re-open it and all characters are displayed correctly.
    But with Palm Desktop v6.2, I am able to type chinese and the characters are displayed correctly in calendar/data book. When I close the palm desktop and re-open it again. All the characters become "?", as a result, I can not fully evaluate the software Pimlico for window desktop. As it only works with Palm desktop v6.2.
    Any suggestion?

  • Writing non-latin Character to Log file from Java application

    Hi Everyone,
    I'm encountering a very strange localization issue.
    I'm executing the following code from a J2EE application (although the behavior is replicated exactly from a Java console application):
    File testFile = new File("D:\\Temp\\blah.txt");
    testFile.createNewFile();
    Writer output = null;
    try {
    output = new BufferedWriter( new FileWriter(testFile) );
    output.write( "אחד שתיים שלוש" ); // Non-Latin characters
    output.write("one two three");
    finally {
    if (output != null) output.close();
    I'm writing non-latin characters (Hebrew in my case) to the file, but these characters are written as question marks:
    ??? ????? ????one two three
    I'm running the project with the following java arguments:
    -Dfile.encoding=UTF8 -Duser.region=IL -Duser.language=he
    And the Project Properties -> Compiler -> Character Encoding = UTF8
    Also, the local Windows Regional Settings are set to Israel / Hebrew.
    Can someone please help with this issue?
    I've tried this with UTF-8 (instead of UTF8) and still no results.
    I suspect this is a Java / Environment issue as it reproduces on a J2EE app and on a console app.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tal.

    You should open/close it somehow at every write from different processes.
    But I personally prefer different file names to your forced merging, though.

  • Non latin character sets and accented latin character with refind

    I need to use refind to deal with strings containing accented
    characters like žittâ lísu, but it doesn't seem to
    find them. Also when using it with cyrillic characters , it won't
    find individual characters, but if I test for [\w] it'll work.
    I found a livedocs that says cf uses the Java unicode
    standard for characters. Is it possible to use refind with non
    latin characters or accented characters or do I have to write my
    own Java?

    works fine for me using unicode data:
    <cfprocessingdirective pageencoding="utf-8">
    <cfscript>
    t="Tá mé in ann gloine a ithe;
    Nà chuireann sé isteach nó amach
    orm";
    s="á";
    writeoutput("search:=#t#<br>for:=#s#<br>found
    at:=#reFind(s,t,1,false)#");
    </cfscript>
    what's the encoding for your data?

  • [Solved, install dejavu font] Libre Office fonts are rendered as boxes

    Been a while since I've posted and thank you in advance for any help offered.
    My issue is pretty straight forward:  all my menus and fonts in Libre Office Writer show up as boxes instead of letters.  I have searched the wiki and forums for a solution but most people who have this problem fix the issue by installing the right language pack.
    As you can see below that isn't my issue:
    local/libreoffice-common 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
    common files for LibreOffice - a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites
    local/libreoffice-en-US 4.1.4-3
    English (US) language pack for LibreOffice
    local/libreoffice-writer 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
    Word Processor Application for LibreOffice.
    I have no plug-ins installed apart from hunspell, mythes and hyphenation.  I removed these packages but there was no change.
    This machine is a Dell laptop with the Intel video chip and thus I have the correct driver installed and everything else works fine:
    :root: ~ : pacman -Qs intel
    local/intel-dri 10.0.2-1
    Mesa drivers for Intel
    local/xf86-video-intel 2.99.907-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
    I tried nuking my Libre Office directory in my home directory but that yielded no change.  My .gtk-* directories don't contain anything specific to LO.
    These are the only fonts I've added to this install (thanks boohoomil) and are not customised in any way:
    local/cairo-infinality-ultimate 1.12.16-3 (infinality-bundle)
    Cairo vector graphics library with respect-fontconfig, expose and Ubuntu patches (infinality-bundle)
    local/fontconfig-infinality-ultimate 2.11.0-15 (infinality-bundle)
    A library for configuring and customizing font access (includes generic fontconfig package and ultimate settings by bohoomil).
    local/freetype2-infinality-ultimate 2.5.2-3 (infinality-bundle)
    TrueType font rendering library with Infinality patches and custom settings by bohoomil (infinality-bundle).
    I have gone so far as to try snapwm and Xfce4 but there is no difference in the font rendering in LO.
    I'm stymied about this because I have used this setup previously on this and two other machines.  Any ideas?

    I thought of that but, as I use the infinality-bundle, which fonts do I need to test this hypothesis?  Or can you suggest one I can install from the official repos?
    [edit]  Just after posting this I remembered that LO, as noted on the wiki somewhere, suggest one install the ttf-dejavu font.  After installing this font everything is now showing correctly.
    @nomorewindows, Thank you very much!  I feel a bit silly but I learned something from this and for that I grateful to you.

  • Non-latin character support for photobook?

    Hello,
    Does anyone know if photo-book created from iPhoto supports printing non-Latin characters, more precisely cyrillic?
    Thanks!

    Before you order the book Control-click in the gray area next to a page and select Preview Book. When the book has been assembled and displayed in Preview you can save it as a PDF and check to make sure your text has been rendered correctly.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Non-english character display as square box

    Hi all,
    I'm not very sure if this question should be asked here or in the JRE board, thus I'm trying here also
    I have been trying an opensourced application called Alliancep2p (could be obtained from www.alliancep2p.com) using JRE 1.6 on an English Windows XP Pro machine.
    The problem:
    all chinese input are displayed as "square box". It looks like the programme "gets" the correct character, only that everything is displayed as "square box".
    It looks like a font issue, though I'm not that sure. Is there anyway the default fonts could be changed, or to get the characters correctly displayed?
    Note: I have east asian fonts installed, and the Java config panel can display chinese or other non-english characters correctly.
    I tried the same application under GNU/Linux (locale is UTF-8) and chinese input/display correctly without any problem at all. Does it mean that it is not the problem of the application, or?
    The original question in the JRE board:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5265369&tstart=0
    Thanks for all the input.

    I'm not really sure if it's a problem of the application or not. But the fact that it works perfectly under Linux makes me think maybe it's not the problem of the program, and actually their developers said that unicode is being used all over the program and seems like they're not CJK users also.
    I'm not a java guru so I can't really tell from the source if there's anything wrong.

  • Scaling fonts on non-retina external display?

    Hi,
    I am using an external display Asus PB278Q on my MBP Retina 15" Late 2013, at resolution 2560x1440 on Yosemite. So far so good.
    Unfortunately font and icon sizes are really small in this resolution, so I would like to scale them up to increase readability. However the resolution should stay as is. For retina displays, you can scale fonts nicely under system settings -> displays -> Scale (see here for screenshot: http://cdn-static.zdnet.com/i/story/70/00/007009/rmbp13-displays-system-preferen ce.png). For my non-retina display this option is not available it seems.
    Is there any way to still scale fonts consistently on this external display to increase readability?
    Thanks!

    I've been having this same issue for a few months now, and even after the latest EFI update. BUT... This morning is the first time my Macbook Pro awaked from a long nap displaying the correct resolution and properties.
    What did I do?
    When waking from sleep yesterday, the macbook again was in the wrong resolution. I went to display properties and clicked the arrangement tab. I moved the menu bar to my Macbook display and turned off mirroring. (I do use an external display at times so my menu bar was moved to the alternate display when connected).
    This morning after over 20 hours sleeping the macbook woke up fresh with all its beauty sleep in tact. This is only one long sleep so its no real fix just yet, but may be a clue where this bug lies.

  • A ques about Reading and Writing non-Latin character Strings

    Never had any need to to the captioned before, so I never investigated it. But now I do.
    We are in the midst of a major conversion of our software to UTF-8. Oracle Forms displays these Strings (ex: &#1059;&#1082;&#1088;&#1072;&#1111;&#1085;&#1089;&#1100;&#1082;&#1072;) properly, but when I query the DB column behind the form and display the O/P to a TextArea, or use BufferedWriter to write it to a File it displays the old upside-down question mark. Similarly if I load data into the column, while it displays fine in my SQL statement, it loads wrong and displays on the form as UD?marks. So, what simple thing am I missing?

    I downloaded the ojdbc14.jar and the pgm can find it and I can connect to the DB via:URL url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:"+host; // host is the hostname, port and sid
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection( url, uid, pwd );
    {code}
    But I want to connect via:
    {code:java}"jdbc:odbc:"+sid; // where sid is the USER DSN in the ODBC Data Source Administrator
    {code} ... but I need to run the setup pgm for the driver and I can't find one for Oracle. Anybody know where I should be looking? In the past the DB Admins set these up.

  • Non-Latin characters no displaying properly in Safari on iPhone

    I am having an issue where non-English (Chinese, Japanese etc) characters are displaying as squares on the iPhone's Safari browser. I've seen this issue on Windows when you haven't installed support for Asian languages.
    It would appear that the version of OS-X on the iPhones does not have support for non-Latin character sets.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    I am having an issue where non-English (Chinese,
    Japanese etc) characters are displaying as squares on
    the iPhone's Safari browser.
    Could you provide the urls? It may be the pages have bad coding. Correctly coded pages will display according to tests I've seen:
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iphonesafarilang.jpg
    But unlike OS X the iPhone has no way yet to manually correct for miscoded pages via a View > Text Encoding menu.

  • [Solved]Ctrl+V not working in libreoffice on gnome(non-latin layout)

    When using gnome-shell&libreoffice or calligra, universal keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+v or ctrl+z don't do anything while on a non-latin layout(hebrew in my case).
    If I want to paste something with ctrl+v I have to change layout to English and only then will it work.
    Under MATE the shortcuts work fine regardless of the layout in both applications(and all others i have tried).
    Under GNOME Shell all other applications I tried accept the shortcuts regardless of the layout(Firefox, gedit, Empathy, Nautilus)
    Anyone has an idea as to what might cause this behavior when using GNOME?
    Thanks.
    EDIT: Solved for libreoffice by removing the package "libreoffice-gnome". UI is not as pretty now but at least the keyboard shortcuts work.

    After months of switching layouts and banging my head against this bug, I thought I should check LibreOffice settings (I'm using 4.1.5.3 now). What figures? I did find something. And in just a few clicks.
    This is not a bug! It's simply a matter of configuration.
    For the regular keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, etc.) to remain operational in LibreOffice applications while using a non-latin keyboard layout (like Greek or Russian), go to Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Languages, check the Ignore system input language option, save, and Bob's your uncle.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!
    PS
    Technically, though, shortcuts still remain language-dependent. This means if you enable this option, you will have to set your document languages manually.

  • How do I get rid of non-latin fonts?

    Hi -
    Using FontBook I've isolated all the non-latin fonts into one collection. I had Photoshop shut down during this. I deactivated the fonts individually and then did the same to that non-latin collection.  But when I launch Photoshop - all those fonts still show up on the font list.  There have always been a few in MS Word - and they are still there - not deactivated.
    Eventually I want to delete these useless fonts from my over loaded hard drive - but I can't even seem to isolate them and deactivate them using Font Book.
    What is the correct procedure for deleting fonts - or at least deactivating them so they don't show up on any app's font list.
    TIA your experience,
