[solved] iPod Classic disconnects during transfer

if I transfer more than a couple songs at a time, my iPod Classic 160GB disconnects during transfer. on Lubuntu, I could get away with about 40 tracks at a time, now it disconnects if I do more than a couple. I'm not sure the issue, lsusb says I'm using a usb 2.0 port
[ tye@t: ~ ]$ lsusb -s 001:008 -v | grep -i bcdusb
bcdUSB 2.00
one more detail: when the USB disconnects during transfer, it's no longer visible in lsusb, where as when I eject it it still remains visible.

You ran journalctl as a regular user and not as root.

  • ITunes kicking iPod classic out during syncing

Okay -- this is kind of weird, but I thought I'd give it a shot on this board. When I connect my iPod Classic to iTunes it automatically syncs, but then instead of saying it's okay to disconnect it "kicks" the iPod out of iTunes and the Apple logo shows up on the iPod. Then after a few seconds, it will automatically reconnect and then go through the syncing process again. At that point, it will let me eject it.
Is this a problem if this keeps happening? I can live with it, even though it's kind of annoying. Does anyone know why this would happen? I just upgraded by iPod software and wondered it it's a bug in either iTunes or the new iPod software. Will it damage my iPod to have this keep happening?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am still having the problem. I have noticed a pattern to the seemingly random freezes.
The iPod is stopping to Sync at almost predictable points during the sync. The first stoppage occurs around the 1.9GB part of the sync. This has not always been the same file but it is always around the same place.
When I sync in small chunks the freeze occurs at almost the same place every time. As soon as it freezes, iTunes is toast and the entire computer needs to be restarted.
Anyways, the freeze happens around every 2GB's of data transferred. It does not have to be in one chunk, it is almost like it is happening on the iPod. Like the iPod is kicking itself out of the sync at certain points along it's hard drive or something. Once it freezes and I restart the computer, I can transfer another 2 GB before it freezes again... then restart, repeat. Finally I was able to load up the 14.8 GB I had in my iTunes. Several hours later... not sure if I should take the iPod back or not. If it is the iPod and that fixes the problem great... but if it is my machine, I get another 3-4 hours syncing and restarting my computer. Wheeee!

  • IPod Classic disconnects while synching

    Hi,
Whilst trying to synch, my iPod initially shows as connected, then quickly switches to Ejecting, and then disconnects.  Basically, there is no chance of the iPod synching fully.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  I would recommend putting your iPod through this troubleshooting assistant, seeing if the issue persists after each step:

  • HT1320 ipod classic stuck during Ok to disconnet message

My ipod classic has the message ok to disconnect although the bar doesnt go right to the end, I disconnected from my PC but it has now frozen! any ideas???

Update - the sme happens if I load the music in a different oredr (which would appear to rule out the "corrupt file" possibility). Starting from the other end of the 22,000 tracks, I synched in stages up to 17,000 - all worked fine, I could eject the ipod and play music, all OK. But then when I tried to synch the remaining 5,000, taking it up to the full 22,000, I hit exactly the same problem.
I even left the ipod connected (saying "OK to disconnect" and with the progress bar complete) overnight, to see if it was just a matter of time - it wasn't, it was still the same in the morning.

  • Got new computer, windows 8. downloaded newest itunes. plugged my ipod classic in to transfer purchases to the new itunes but it says there is an error with my ipod and there is no transfer purchases option. help.

my new windows 8 laptop pops up with an error message every time i plug my ipod classic into it. itunes is reconizing it and everything but it makes my computer restart whenever it gets plugged in.

i just did that and it comes up saying to log in with my stepmoms apple ID... shes never been on my computer or even ever touched my ipod or itunes. how can i bypass this to just get the songs that are already on my ipod to my library? i have my entire library set up in my itunes on my other computer, is there any way to get that itunes to my new laptop?

  • Ipod keeps disconnecting during sync

Just adding my issues to the pile. Same as many other, I consistently have my 80GB Classic ipod disconnect with the "wrong volume in disk" message. It will make it through about 2100 of the songs before it stalls out and disconnects.
Every time it happens, the ipod gets stuck in sync mode, even after ejecting the ipod in itunes, and I have to disconnect it. When the ipod comes back up, there are usually 0 to 7 songs on it, and when I connect it to itunes, it shows 15GB of "Other" data, which is what should have been the songs.
I have tried the fix apple posted for the -50 error, didn't work.
    I've tried syncing automatically
I've tried syncing manually (both in one large batch, and in many multiple smaller batches).
I've tried turning off album art prior to syncing.
I've tried syncing across USB 1.1 and 2.0, both with older ipod cables, the new cable that came with the classic, and a 3rd party cable.
I've tried IDing the specific songs that are loading when the ipod hangs and disconnects, thinking they might be corrupt, and then deleting them, and after restoring the ipod and syncing again, it will hang again, this time with a song that loaded just fine the previous time, so there appears to be no rhyme or reason to it as far as the song files are concerned.
I'm about to try uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, but I doubt it will help.
How did things get so bad from the 5.5 to the classic? This is crazy.

    Just an update:
I took the iPod to work where I have a much smaller library, about 5 GB (my iPod is an 80 GB model). I reset it and synced to the work computer and it worked. It seems that it can only handle a smaller database? I also ran some diagnostic tests ala
    http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml
It won't pass the FW / USB detect test. Perhaps the unit is faulty. In any case, my next step is to try to return it for exchange at Best Buy, though it is 5 days over the 30 day period. How convenient! Nothing about this exprience has been convenient. They should call this thing the iClod.

  • Help: iPod classic freezing during sync, can't figure out  if this is an iPod or iTunes issue....

I have a 160gb iPod thats barely a year old, been working fine. Earlier today I was putting some music onto my iTunes when I got a software update for iTunes, 10.6.1. I downloaded the update and installed it and what not. I connected my iPod and noticed that it wasnt synching and iTunes froze. I put my computer on hibernate just to disconnect my iPod. I disconnected it and suddenly all my music vanished. I connect my iPod back and again, it won't synch & iTunes freezes. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, same problems was happening. I tried uninstalling the updated iTunes and installed the last version to see if that would work. Still nothing resolved.
I ended up restoring my iPod somehow so that it connects to iTunes. I thought I figured it out, it was synching with iTunes and I started the process of putting all 7000 songs back, but during the synch it freezes at some point. I categorize my music by artists, alphabetically. The synch freezes exactly once I get to the letter D. So I have about 1100 songs. I'm going to apple tomorrow to see if they know *** is goin on. Anybody have suggestions tho? This is ****** me the **** off.

First off thanks to all the views and no replies, lots of help....... :sarcasm ended::
anyways, I went to the apple store and they told me the hard drive in the iPod was damaged. If you drop it one too many times, work out with it etc, it takes a tole on the iPod. The hard drive couldnt write the files being transferred through the sync.
So basically, I bought a new iPod and I paid about $120 less.

  • 80g iPod Classic freezing during sync

I'm having a very strange problem with my iPod. I tried to sync it yesterday, but itunes said there was a corrupted file on it, and that it needed to be restored. I allowed that, and the restore went through. As itunes began to put my songs back on the ipod, it would freeze within the first hundred songs or so. This keeps happening; the restore works, but the sync freezes it.
I've tried everything. I re-installed itunes on my Mac after deleting every instance of it, I erased the memory on the ipod, I tried putting it into disc mode, I even tried manually putting a few songs at a time on the ipod. All of these result in itunes or the sync process freezing in some way.
Has anyone had any luck with this?

It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

  • IPod Classic - clock during playback

After about a minute of inactivity during playback, the screen will automatically show a clock & the battery charge. Is there any way to turn off this feature? It's really annoying to look down to see what song is playing and just see a giant clock.

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
No. There currently is no way to turn off or disable the clock screen saver. However, this is a bit of a work around that can be found in this older thread courtesy of Markus Altendorff.

  • Ipod became disconnected during restore.

i was int he middle of a restore that seemed to be taking forever to finish at the end. i kind of forgot it was still going on and ended up restarting my computer. when the do not disconnect display went away the apple boot up screen came on and then went to a picture of a plug in a wall. i took this to mean hook it back up to a charge so i hooked it back up to the computer real quick. it started to restet itself but just got stuck on the apple screen for a while and then went blank. now i cant get it to reset and it does nothing when i plug it in to a wall adapter or to my computer. anyone experience anything like that or have any suggestions?

I Understand, but the basic steps there are for an iPOd that has not completly had its software installed on it, or has became corrupt. this is what happened when you was restoring it and then restarted, it didn't install the iPOds software COMPLETLY onto the iPod.
I'll describe the basics of what you will be doing here tho. First with the iPOd disconnected from the PC, put it into "Disk Mode" as described at this link (Right click the link and hit Open in new window so you can continue reading this post) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Now with it in disk mode, you will run the latest iPOd updater which is 03-23-2006 (If you do not have this version it can be downloaded here http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ ) Connect the iPod to the PC while its in disk mode and run the updater/restore on it.

  • IPod Nano disappears during transfer

When I connect my Nano to my computer, it appears in my iTunes. However, when I try and transfer music to the Nano it starts to work but then disappears during the transfer and no files are transferred. It is so frustrating!

I've checked the power settings on my USB Ports and turned off the option to have the computer turn them off to save power. Still having the same problem, though!

  • Ipod shuts off during transfer of songs

I am about to give up on apple and ipods. I bought a 30gb 5th gen iPod in January. After less than 2 months of use, the hard drive completely failed and I had to get the hard drive replaced. I finally got it back after a month.
Now loading songs onto my iPod is impossible. It will transfer a random amount of songs and then the iPod will restart. Sometimes the songs that were transfered are still there, sometimes the entire hard drive is erased. I have tried resetting the iPod, updating the iPod, and using the dskchk command to fix it. THe only other option I can think of is completely reformatting my hard drive and then updating. Any suggestions?
Also, I cant find any email addresses in which to contact apple. I wish to express my concern in their product. I may not be the most technical savvy person out there, but I am not where near illiterate in the area of technology. If this isnt working for me, Im sure others out there are having much more trouble than I am.

  • How do you transfer songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer? The only songs that transfer are those that I purchased on iTunes. Is there a 3rd party website or something?

I am trying to transfer 3000 songs from my iPod Classic to my new computer. The only songs that transfer are those that I have purchased on iTunes (242 songs). All of the music from my CD collection that I have on my iPod Classic will not transfer. What (if any) is the best 3rd party website that will assist?

  • HT1386 Upgraded to the latest iTunes (ver11) I have an iPod classic 30gig ver 1.3 Now I get iTunes not found, error 68 and 69 during sync. Diagnostics shows iPod, iTunes sees it but it won't sync and won't disconnect.

Since upgrading to version 11, my iPod will not sync properly. I get errors 68 and 69, iPod not found, no disc in drive, wrong volume in drive and iPod cannot be sync'd because I don't have enough access privledges. I have restored the iPod a bunch of times, reloaded iTunes twice and sacrifices a virtual virgin to a virtual god. Visited Genius Bar in Columbia, MD once and I have scheduled a second visit for this Friday, 1/4/13.
Is anyone else having these problems?

  • HT1351 Using OverDrive Media from my library I can't transfer audiobooks to my ipod classic

Can anyone tell me how to configure my ipod Classic so I can transfer audiobooks from the library using OverDrive Media.  These particular books are labeled "ipod compatible" but when I try to transfer, after downloading to my computer, I get an error message saying they can't be transferred to my ipod.  I selected the option on my ipod to manually manage something which I know requires that I eject my ipod before disconnecting it from the computer.  Any other help?

What format are these audiobook tracks in? If it's the WAV format it will not work with the iPod Classic. You'll want to use the MP3 version instead from OverDrive.
