[SOLVED] KDE 4.10.4 can;t Shut down, Restart the computer.

As the title says. After installing KDE 4.10.4, Restart or Shut down the system doesn't work.
It exits, kills X and the system waits at tty. It may be a KDM problem because you can't Restart, Shut Down from KDM login screen.
Anyone experiences something similar?

Actually all the credits go here: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32028 that's where i found the solution.
I had the same problem, when i switched to systemd, i too didn't changed the kde reboot/shutdown commands to systemctl ...

Server 2012 In-place upgrade to 2012 R2 error. Error upgrading: Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates

Trying to upgrade server 2012 with RDS role on it, to server 2012 R2.
It stays for a while on step "Collecting files, settings, and applications 0%"
and then returns the error:

Installed all the latest updates, rebooted, also tried to to run setup with local admin, still the same.
Setup logs contain user profile related errors:

I was able to get past "Collecting files, settings, and applications 0%" by disabling user profile disks, but then on reboot I got another error:
Setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored.

Can't shut down / restart after Leopard upgrade

The installation went ok - I had to unplug all peripherals for it to reboot at the end of the install.
Now when I want to shut down or restart, it just doesn't. After a while it brings an error message that it can't shut down because an application (e.g. firefox) doesn't want to quit. Even if I close all running applications, it still comes back and says it can't close Finder (at that point, there is no menu bar on top anymore, however the application bar on bottom is still there - showing now application active. And then it just sits there. I have to push and hold the power button for it to switch off.
Anybody any idea how to fix this?

Yes. I know. If you could type everything about the problem, it would be too long for anyone to read.
Be patient, because I would like to track down where you are getting this "hang."
If you "Quit" (via command Quit) all open appications except Finder (verify this by opening the Apple icon --> Force Quit and verify that nothing except "Finder" is showing); disconnect all external firwire and USB devices; and then choose shut down, do you still get a hang?
If it still hangs, and you get the message that you can't shut down because some application will not quit, then open Aptivity Monitor (Applicaitons --> Utilities), are any of the processes listed displayed in red?
I think that the deal is that you've got an applicaiton hanging that is preventing a system shup down. I bet we can find the culprit.

Can I shut down in the middle of Applying privileges to secondary drive?

I've had it with this permissions and locked hard drive mess. I gotta get to work. I'd like to erase my secondary drives (Lacie 1.8TB). I tried to "Apply to Enclosed Items" in a desperate attempt to remove the lock and now it's taking forever to Apply. Can I just shut down the computer, restart and wipe the drive with disk utility? Or could shutting down in the middle of the Applying Permissions process damage the drive?

I made the mistake of doing this once, too (trying to apply new permissions to my Time Machine folders on a secondary drive), on my Mac Pro.
It took days - literally.

Mike, try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). Read the linked article, then scroll down to find the instructions for resetting the PMU on your model, then do this:
1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the computer.

Can't shut down / restart after Leopard upgrade - can't install updates

(While I found a topic with the same subject from last November, which is marked "answered", as far as my machine is concerned, nothing in that thread helps)
Having upgraded to Leopard, I have found that the regular shutdown process never works. I invariably get told that Firefox (or something else) is still running but not only is the "Force Quit" dialog empty, but a "ps aux" command does not list any process related to Firefox in it.
For the last few months, I've been doing shutdown -h now, the only mechanism that would work.
However, there's a new update which has a button to restart, but it WON"T restart. I just get the usual problems as above. If I do a shutdown -r now, I can reboot, but it looks like the software update did not actually happen, as I simply get prompted again to install/restart.
Anyone know how to really solve this problem?

Well, it turns out that I was wrong about the original thread not helping. As a last act of a desperate user, I went to the place in user accounts where the login items are specified and pulled out EVERYTHING except my microsoft keyboard/mouse drivers (don't laugh...the only thing I hate about Macs are their keyboards and mice) and my system is now working perfectly...shuts down properly every time, etc...the updater was able to do its job.
I have absolutely no idea which item caused the problem and I don't care.
It works!

My Mac has a dark curtain that slowly goes down the screen and then asks for a shut down of the computer. What is happening? What do I do?

I am having a problem with my Mac Pro spontaniously having a darkened curtain that slowly goes from top to bottom of the screen and then in a message box asks me to shut the computer down. There is no warning. I cannot go on with my work as it seems to freeze whatever I am doing. I do no lose the work I am doing, usually, but it is hard and annoying while working. Any helps? I have taken off most apps and fonts that I have installed secondarily. What can cause this and what do I do?

Reset Password starting from Recovery HD
Start the computer,then press and hold down command and R keys to start into recovery partition.
When you see the Apple logo, release the keys.
Wait until OS X Utilities window shows up.
Move the mouse to the menubar at the top and click "Utilities", then select "Terminal"
from the drop down.
Terminal window will appear.
Type in resetpassword and press enter on the keyboard.
Leave the Terminal window open.
Reset Password Utility window will open with Macintosh HD selected.
Select the user account from the popup menu box.
Enter a new password.
Reenter the new password for the user.
Enter a hint.
Click the "Save" button.
Click  in the menubar and select Restart.
Log in.
If Keychain dialog box appears, select “Create New Keychain”.

Can't shut down after opening Java Control Panel

Hello,
I'm just a regular guy with Windows ME and since I installed JRE 1.4.2_02 (for Mozilla 1.5), I can't shut down my pc after opening the Java Control Panel. Javaw.exe stays in memory (Norton System Information) even after the JCP has been closed. This was not an issue with 1.4.1 beta which I used for a long time. Then I could open the JCP applet and make adjustments (minor, just whether or not I wanted it to be able to cache applets etc.) then I would close it and nothing interfered with shutdown.
I have even tried Enditall2 and Sysinternals Process Explorer's close and kill functions and neither can close or kill Javaw.exe.
I have very little running in the background and never had shutdown issues until installing JRE 1.4.2_02 and it works fine other than this issue with JCP and shutdown.

Gave up, went back to 1.4.1_05, shutdown problem solved.
Disappointed but at least Java works okay and I can adjust things in JCP applet without having to do the three finger salute twice each time. No more Javaw in memory when I close the applet.
Played with Java Web Start's demos, seem to work fine, I guess. Really don't understand what JWS is for, not for us non-programmers?

I have a strange problem, I can't shut down my computer. What happens is that I turn it off and windows shuts down and the screen says "turning off computer" or something. Then it's like that for like 15 minutes then everything goes black and the graphics card fan turns on at 100% speed. Then I have to press and hold the power button for 4 seconds to force it to shut down. I can't make it go into rest as well, the same thing happens.
It all started when I bought a new graphics card ,Powercolor HD 4850, and installed it. I forgot to connect the power chord to the mainboard so when I started the computer the it started to beep and warned me that the power chord was disconnected. So I turned it off and connected it. When I started it again I got a message:
"Warning!!! The previous overclocking had failed , and system will restore its default setting. Press any key to continue..."
But since I had a USB keyboard that didn't work in BIOS I couldn't press any key. So I removed the battery to clear the BIOS and then it worked...but with this annoying problem instead.
I have asked in several forums but they didn't know how to solve it. You're the experts I suppose...If you solve this one I'll be very grateful. My electrical bill is skyrocketing at the moment...

I tried your suggestions but none of them worked so I finally reinstalled Windows. And it worked fine at the beginning, I could turn it off with no problem. I was later that night, when I was about to turn the computer off for the day, that the problems started. Windows update had downloaded some updates so it said "Installing updates do not turn off computer." It had 69 updates to install so I let the computer on over night. When I woke up the next day it was still on, back in windows. The problem was back... What is different from my old problem is that the computer doesn't freeze this time.
I reinstalled windows once more but the same thing happened.
What happens is this:
I turn it off, the screen says "turning off computer" but nothing happens. After like 5-10 minutes a blue screen occurs and it says somewhere on the top DRIVER_POWER_STATUS_FAILURE or something, can't remeber exactly. Then it restarts itself.
This is starting to get annoying now...

i can't shut down my PB!
i think it could be related to the closing latch. i cant hatch it down anymore cos i think the latch on the base of laptop base (the part nearer to our bodies when we face the laptop screen) is damaged. the hook on the top of the screen gets attracted magnetically to the latch area, but i think the latch is damaged or sth.
However, this is hardware!
software wise, i can't shut it down!
even when i set auto shut down in my energy saver preferences, it doesnt!

it just wouldnt work.
anyway, now it can cos i have drained my battery beyond 5% and below. and thereafter i force shut down it.
its fine now. im just glad, but still jittery cos i dont know why this problem came about. so i wouldnt consider it really solved.

Can not shut down late 2011 MacBook Pro and turn it back on again without the hard drive disappearing?

Ok, I have searched for months for an answer to this question to no avail, probably because no one has experienced it before. I am hoping however that you guys can help me figure this one out cause it is driving me nuts! Also, I am not entirely sure what section of the support I should put this under so if I stick it in the wrong place, I apologize.
Right now my problem is very simple. When I turn off my laptop, and then try to turn it back on, my internal hard drive disappears... and I get the blinking folder with a question mark on it. I have figured out something interesting however. I have an install disk with Ubuntu Linux on it. If I boot into that first, then RESTART the laptop, not shut down and turn back on, it reads the internal hard drive just fine and I can boot as if there is nothing wrong.
Second part to the problem... If I allow the laptop in either OSX or Windows to go to sleep (aka shut off the hard drive but the computer remains on), when I attempt to wake it up, I am greeted with the usual log in screen of whichever OS I am in, but is frozen and after a few seconds goes black and restarts the computer to find that... Surprise! The hard drive is gone
I have tried every trick in the book that I can think of, but can not seem to come up with a solution to the problem... I know when the problem happened and if anyone thinks that that will help them figure this out I will type everything I did up till, including the crash that caused this, and my attempted fixes, but I have class right now so only if you guys want it I will type all that out.

Sorry it took me so long to write back, But unfortunately this didn't help my issue.
My uncle and I did a lot of tests on this computer and have narrowed down the location of the problem a little bit.
We tried to first reset the SMC and the NVRAM as suggested, but the only thing that did was make the fans run on full tilt for the first session after restarting it for some reason. After that we tried re installing OSX over the OSX that was already on the system (not removing any of the files). This also didn't do anything but make refit stop working. Then we moved onto the next task at hand by removing the hard drive entirely and booting it as an external drive from one of the USB ports... as long as you booted it with the options key held down, it worked perfectly fine. Then we put an alternative hard drive into the computer and installed OSX on that. This time there was no trouble booting anything up. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. So we made a backup of my original drive (OSX, Windows, and all) onto an external hard drive and tested booting to it via USB. That again worked perfectly fine and booted right up with no problems. So after that we formatted the original hard drive and reinstated OSX. We then proceeded to transfer all the old files from the backup onto this new installation and LOW AND BEHOLD..... we were back to square one with it refusing to recognize the hard drive again.
So this basically told us that there appears to be something either wrong with the hard drive, or something got really screwed up in the software along the lines and by me copying all my old files back over, I just ended up bringing the screwed up file back over with it! (despite not copying over any settings of any kind) So I am still extremely confused as to what is going wrong... did some boot sector possibly get screwed up may be?

If you cannot get mail to quit/force quit, you can always remove power from your Mac.
NOTE: removing power is a bad idea, and can result in data loss, but sometimes it is the only thing left to do.
Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and the Mac will power off.
When you power back on, the Mac should reboot.
