[Solved] KDE 4 and Amarok 1.4 Media Keys

I've been using KDE 4.2 since it was released. I had installed Amarok 2.0.1 via AUR and was having issues with that version not being compatible with the newest libgpod. I upgraded to 2.0.2 and now Amarok's not able to build my collection database. Add to that the fact that Amarok 2.0.2 still lacks many of the features I liked about 1.4, I've downgraded to Amarok 1.4 in the repositories.
That being said, with Amarok 2 I had multimedia keys working perfectly (skip/next, play/pause, stop) from the KDE global shortcuts settings menu. However, I can't seem to get it to work with 1.4. According to this post (which is for Debian, but it should still work I would imagine), it does seem possible to get Amarok 1.4 to work with the KDE 4 shortcut interface, but I can't figure it out. I tried searching the forums here for people running into this issue, but didn't find anything. Anybody have any insight, or perhaps a thread I've missed?

Thanks very much for the reply, samwise.
I feel a bit silly, though. After playing around a bit in Amarok 1.4, there's an option of setting shortcuts, including global ones. Setting the global shortcuts for play/pause, stop, skip, etc worked great It's not what I was originally looking for (integration into the KDE 4 global shortcut menu), but at least it works.
As for Amarok 2, I agree it's got some big issues. It's a shame that such a good player has gone so wrong. As much as I like the Shoutcast plugin in 2, there are just too many things I don't like, such as the widget area (I wish I could turn it off as I don't use it), the lack of an equalizer, how it handles idv3 tagging, and general bugginess (my original issue with not building my music database).

  • [SOLVED] - KDE and go-openoffice - semi success

I installed go-openoffice from the normal repos, typed in OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 soffice and lo and behold openoffice dialogues are now KDE - hurray!!!
Checked the wiki which says to put the above line in /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh - so I did as I was told (and created /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh in the process) but when I start writer I still get the old gtk dialogues.
The second approach says it should be put into /usr/bin/soffice but that has ended in total disaster for me in that the cpu went into overdrive and stopped accepting anything I was able to throw at it.
Has anybody managed to automate this process so that kde integration works even when it is not started from the command line?

    Okay, time for some piccies:
    With KDE enforced:
    With openoffice dialogue:
    Without openoffice dialogue:
    EDIT:
Solved. I knew it was me being plain thick, so a night's sleep or two sorted it. Instead of following the wiki I edited the menu entries for OpenOffice and placed OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 in front of the actual command - bingo. Okay, it is not global, but enough for me.
    Will adjust the wiki accordingly.

I've only had my macbook for 2 weeks and its gone weird today. It starts with a black select box around icons, popup windows, and the task bar. Then i try to listen to the new mac holiday add when i hear weird laughing. Then the laughing starts when i click on something, anything. I try to turn down the volume with the media key (F12) then dashboard comes in. The contrast keys dont work, and F11 makes firefox browser move to the top right of the screen out of view.

Thank you for your help. I have done some more problem solving and I found something strange in the activity monitor. So i 'quit the process' and shut down. Its all fixed now.

  • Gnome shell, media keys and strange X11 cursor bihaviour

    Hi guys,
I'm new in this forum, but old arch-user. This time I'm experimenting a really strange issue.
I have a lot of packages installed (pacman, but AUR too), and I tried some beta packet, so I don't know if this issues is caused by me, or is a sort of out-of-the-box, but this is what happens:
During Gnome-Shell session (3.16.2 actually), if I press any media keys (my keyboard has prev-next song, play/pause, stop, vol up-down) my cursor goes hidden (all works, but I can't see pointer). If I'm in empty desktop (no opened window), after 20~50pixel in any direction I can meet again my mouse. Instead, if I have some windows open...random behavior...cursor could reappear after 50pixel mouse movement, or it could stay hidden after 4-5Kpixel. The only way to get cursor again in short time is go to gnome overview (the function linked with super key or upper-left corner, by default).
    Additional strange facts:
    - mouse is working all the time (link is focused, button is pressed, focus follow mouse event, and so on...)
    - seems gnome top bar get same effect as empty desktop (20~50pixel and cursor is visible again)
    - if I link key combination with media function (Ctrl + Up/Down for volume, for example), everything goes well
    - I have a secondary bluetooth keyboard with same media keys, but this peripheral is not affected by this issue
Any additional informations will be provided, but first, I did my homework:
    - main keyboard: Thermaltake Tt eSPORTS Challenger Ultimate
    - secondary keyboard: Logitech diNovo Mini
    - main mouse: Kensington Expert Mouse
    - secondary mouse (secondary keyboard has build-in touchpad): Logitech diNovo Mini
    - tertiary mouse: Logitech G9x
    - Gnome shell: 3.16.2
    - X.Org: 1.17.1
    - Kernel: 4.0.4-2-ARCH
    - Nvidia-driver (beta from AUR): 352.09  --- GPU: GeForce GTX 780
    - xinput output:

From this output I noticed some strange association: main keyboard apper as pointer too. Moreover if I kill id=9
    xinput set-prop 9 "Device Enabled" 0
all keyboard still works, but media keys.

I already tried to use xmodmap (remapping), xdotool (scripting mouse movement), dconf ([...].gnome cursor active false), sddm (instead of gdm), and a ton of other trick found somewhere, but no luck.
    Any idea? :-]
    Thanks in advance

    Got is sorted myself.
I installed KDE which worked perfectly. Then went about trying to install chromium. After installing and trying to launch chromium I noticed it would just hand unless launched by root (terminal).
Which led me to check permissions under /home.
Turns out that somehow my /home/{me}/.config directory was owned by root:root  . A simple chown -R ~/.config  and a reinstall of gnome got everything working fine
NB: maybe someone with more insight can figure how/why ~/.config was owned by root from a fresh install and setup of systemd ??

  • [SOLVED] mplayer, xF86 media keys

    Hi,
mplayer is my software of choice for playing music. That's what I would like to do with it: bind some of the xF86 keys to move to the next/previous music -- instead of going to the terminal where mplayer is originally running and use the keys < / > to move between tracks.
However, after some search, I couldn't find a script/command that I could bind to the xF86 keys that allows me to do this. Is there such a command I could use?
    Thanks!!
p.s.: since xmonad is my windows manager, I'm using the xmonad configuration file to bind my media keys.

    Create a pipe
    mkfifo mplayer.pipe
    start mplayer like so
    mplayer -slave -input file=mplayer.pipe
now you can send commands to this fifo, for example:
    echo "pt_step 1" > mplayer.pipe
    echo "pt_step -1" > mplayer.pipe
    for next song/previous song.

  • Windows 7, Microsoft Keyboard Media Keys (Play/Pause), and iTunes

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and iTunes 9.0.1.8 with Microsoft Intellipoint 7.0 and a Microsoft Keyboard with media keys.
In previous versions of Windows, iTunes, and Intellipoint, pressing the "play/pause" key on the keyboard would play or pause iTunes -- even when iTunes wasn't the active application.
In my current setup, when iTunes is minimized, then the media keys don't control iTunes.
Is this a bug? Is there something I can do to fix the situation?
I've asked Microsoft for help, and they say it looks to be a compatibility issue with iTunes. So, now I'm asking Apple. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have this same problem, but with Windows XP Pro. It MUST be a iTunes and a Microsoft IntelliType driver issue.
I JUST reinstalled my computer and loaded all new everything and the buttons worked off and on (depending on focus). I don't remember doing anything to make it work last time. The only thing I remember was installing a plug-in so my ATI Remote Wonder worked with iTunes.
I downloaded Chris's dll as suggested. Worked flawlessly. I hope Apple and/or Microsoft fix this in the next release of their software.

  • ITunes 10.5 and Microsoft keyboard media keys with IntelliType Installed

Hi. I just updated to iTunes 10.5 and the media keys (play/pause, back, and forward buttons -- the latter two of which have been mapped to previous and next track respectively) on my Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard no longer work when iTunes in minimized. It works fine if iTunes is the active window. I tried installing the latest version of IntelliType (v8.2) and the installation notified me that I already have the latest version. I had no problems with the older version of iTunes (10.4).
Is anyone else having this problem? Any solutions? Thanks in advance!

I managed a different FIX. This is just for Microsoft Multimedia keyboard (I have Microsoft 8000)
I uninstalled Microsoft Intellitype 8.1 that I had and then installed the newer 8.2 Version.
Before I did that I Downgraded to Itunes 10.3 64x like someone else said, but it did not help.
If this fix don't work with Itunes 10.5 then Downgrade like I did, It easier..No copying of files needed.
After you uninstall Itunes 10.5 and Install 10.3, it give you an error for your library.
So you press "SHIFT" and then open ITUNES.
then you go to "My Music\iTunes" folder inside your genereal music folder, it should be there. (WIN 7)
then to "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and you should have a backup or and some kind of old "itunes Library folder" files...you choose one of them and Itunes opens fine with all playlist and everything.
    Now everything workd find.
    Good luck!
    P.S
I after all this this does not work, might be because I installed Itune 10.3 before the new Intellitype 8.2.
So try Uninstalling Intellitype 8.2 again.
Then reinstall it...maybe it does things when Installing...I don't know.

  • Qosmio X300 - Media keys and other lights stays on

    Hi there,
I'm running Vista Bus 64 bit. For some reason all of the media keys and other lights stays ON.
When i press one of the media keys, it fades out and a few seconds later they fades back in again.
I have tried re-installing Value Added Package, but it did not resolve anything.
    Can someone please help

You can manually turn them on and off by opening windows explorer and going to C:\Program Files\Toshiba\TBS and look for dimmer.exe when you click this it turns the lights on and off.
You could make a shortcut to this on your desktop if you cannot get proper functionality of the lights on/off button on the media key bar.

    Hi!
With the recent update of qt4 i had a problem to start X session.
First, i update all with pacman -Syu (qt4 to 4.8.4-11), and then update only qt4 to 4.8.4-12.
A few hours i have a problem to start KDE and show me a message:
Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?

Last edited by xpt (2013-03-08 20:40:33)

gnome-session, startkde and startxfce4 will start a D-Bus session automatically if one is not already running. The skeleton file for ~/.xinitrc (/etc/skel/.xinitrc) will do the same. Make sure that your ~/.xinitrc is based on the skeleton file /etc/skel/.xinitrc.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/D-Bus
    So...
    $ cat /etc/skel/.xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    ... because ...
    $ ls /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/
    30-dbus 40-libcanberra-gtk-module xdg-user-dirs
That's why dbus is not started.
    EDIT:
As a side note: I strongly suggest using KDM in your case. You can create a session file only for steam and switch to a seperate session with only steam from inside KDE. This will also stop KDE from running, when all you want is steam.

  • [solved] kf5 and kde groups relation?

Please, can anybody clarify a relation between kde and kf5 package groups and intended way of the kde4-to-kde5 migration in a whole?
    Last edited by student975 (2014-05-19 14:04:38)

Roughly speaking, the kf5 packages are a split version of the kdelibs as we know them from KDE 4.x. , meant to replace them.
Somewhere in the future all the apps developed on top of kdelibs will be ported to kf5 (currently only kate and maybe systemsettings have been ported). The same will happen for the plasma shell (plasma next) which is now in beta and available in the AUR.
If you're not interested in testing plasma next or testing/developing kf5 apps you have no interest in kf5 packages either.
For more info, consider reading Andrea's announcement related to kf5: http://blog.andreascarpino.it/kf5-offic … -for-arch/

  • Media Keys

When I installed Windows 7 RC for the first time the media keys worked.
When I rebooted, they no longer work.
    How do I solve this?

Thank you guys for your help. However i have done both power down function and reinstalled the value added package. The media keys i'm talking about are on the left side of the keyboard under the power button. There is the Eco, Mute, movie, play/pause, reverse fast forward and fast forward and volume up and down. The power button lights up, the caps button lights up, the satellite word lights up on bottom left and above the touchpad and below the spacebar that lights up. I just can't use those keys. They use to work and I thought I had to do some checking in a box but I've gone throught the toshipa HS setup and my Bios is V3.10 11/30/09. I'm running windows 7 service pack 1 64 bit.
This has happend to me before when I had to do a sytem restore but I can't find or remember how to get them to work again. Also people have said use the function key and held down but I can't find anything that talkes about making those buttons work and light up.
    Thanks,

  • [Solved] KDE 4.5.1 constant disk i/o from /jbd2/sda4-8

I recently switched from Gnome to KDE 4.5, and have noticed one small problem, that this machine never had with Gnome.   I put conky on it (and have a disk io graph on my config) and last night I noticed that /dev/sda was being accessed every couple of seconds.   Using iotop I can see that very 2-3 seconds I get disk i/o access from a process called /jbd2/sda4-8.   I have read up on this, and it's got something to do with ext4 journaling.   I took a look at my fstab and noticed that two partitions on /dev/sda did not have the noatime flag, but adding that didn't correct this problem.   Some people say this can be caused by the HAL daemon, but in the Arch guide for KDE it says that HAL is necessary for KDE to automount drives.   One person suggested I try the command hal-disable-polling --device /sda, but when I tried that it just returns a message saying that /sda isn't removable media, and thus, polling wasn't running on it to begin with.
The only other option I've seen would be to just remove HAL from the daemons entry in rc.conf, but then what would I do about KDE not showing the drives in Dolphin?
Looking over system logs revealed no errors either.   I'm just at a loss to see how to stop this.
Last edited by Beelzebud (2010-09-20 21:28:00)

ah ha!  I'm an idiot.   I didn't understand how conky could be the culprit, considering I never saw this activity in Gnome.   But just for the sake of troubleshooting, I tried iotop while conky was killed, and the problem was gone.
Then it hit me.    To set up conky with KDE, and make transparency work, you have to use feh to take a snapshot of the desktop background.   Conky was set to 2 second updates, so therefore feh was refreshing as well!
I'm just glad I know exactly what the issue was.    This teaches me to double check the simple things first, before thinking of way more complicated things.    Thanks guys.   Marking this as solved.
