[SOLVED] - KDE and go-openoffice - semi success

I installed go-openoffice from the normal repos, typed in OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 soffice and lo and behold openoffice dialogues are now KDE - hurray!!!
Checked the wiki which says to put the above line in /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh - so I did as I was told (and created /etc/profile.d/openoffice.sh in the process) but when I start writer I still get the old gtk dialogues.
The second approach says it should be put into /usr/bin/soffice but that has ended in total disaster for me in that the cpu went into overdrive and stopped accepting anything I was able to throw at it.
Has anybody managed to automate this process so that kde integration works even when it is not started from the command line?

Okay, time for some piccies:
With KDE enforced:
With openoffice dialogue:
Without openoffice dialogue:
EDIT:
Solved. I knew it was me being plain thick, so a night's sleep or two sorted it. Instead of following the wiki I edited the menu entries for OpenOffice and placed OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde4 in front of the actual command - bingo. Okay, it is not global, but enough for me.
Will adjust the wiki accordingly.

  • [SOLVED] Problem witch qt4 , KDE and startx

    Hi!
With the recent update of qt4 i had a problem to start X session.
First, i update all with pacman -Syu (qt4 to 4.8.4-11), and then update only qt4 to 4.8.4-12.
A few hours i have a problem to start KDE and show me a message:
Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?
After trying to use the following command:
    xinit steam -- :1
and to my surprise, run KDE without problems, but with xinitrc exec startkde and startx it continues equal
Last edited by xpt (2013-03-08 20:40:33)

gnome-session, startkde and startxfce4 will start a D-Bus session automatically if one is not already running. The skeleton file for ~/.xinitrc (/etc/skel/.xinitrc) will do the same. Make sure that your ~/.xinitrc is based on the skeleton file /etc/skel/.xinitrc.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/D-Bus
    So...
    $ cat /etc/skel/.xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    ... because ...
    $ ls /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/
    30-dbus 40-libcanberra-gtk-module xdg-user-dirs
That's why dbus is not started.
    EDIT:
As a side note: I strongly suggest using KDM in your case. You can create a session file only for steam and switch to a seperate session with only steam from inside KDE. This will also stop KDE from running, when all you want is steam.

  • [solved] kf5 and kde groups relation?

Please, can anybody clarify a relation between kde and kf5 package groups and intended way of the kde4-to-kde5 migration in a whole?
    Last edited by student975 (2014-05-19 14:04:38)

Roughly speaking, the kf5 packages are a split version of the kdelibs as we know them from KDE 4.x. , meant to replace them.
Somewhere in the future all the apps developed on top of kdelibs will be ported to kf5 (currently only kate and maybe systemsettings have been ported). The same will happen for the plasma shell (plasma next) which is now in beta and available in the AUR.
If you're not interested in testing plasma next or testing/developing kf5 apps you have no interest in kf5 packages either.
For more info, consider reading Andrea's announcement related to kf5: http://blog.andreascarpino.it/kf5-offic … -for-arch/

  • [SOLVED] KDE install problem

    Hi folks,
I am trying to install KDE on my Arch Linux flash drive and I'm having 1 problem. I typed pacman -S kde, and about 20% through the whole download, it gets to the file called "libwbclient-4.0.7-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz". It then starts going through a LOT of mirrors trying to find one that works, but every single one says "The requested URL returned error: 404 not found". I checked with my phone and another computer that my internet is working, and I paused the download and pinged Google to make sure the laptop I'm using still had a connection (it did). Any ideas?

  • [Solved] KDE 4.5.1 constant disk i/o from /jbd2/sda4-8

I recently switched from Gnome to KDE 4.5, and have noticed one small problem, that this machine never had with Gnome.   I put conky on it (and have a disk io graph on my config) and last night I noticed that /dev/sda was being accessed every couple of seconds.   Using iotop I can see that very 2-3 seconds I get disk i/o access from a process called /jbd2/sda4-8.   I have read up on this, and it's got something to do with ext4 journaling.   I took a look at my fstab and noticed that two partitions on /dev/sda did not have the noatime flag, but adding that didn't correct this problem.   Some people say this can be caused by the HAL daemon, but in the Arch guide for KDE it says that HAL is necessary for KDE to automount drives.   One person suggested I try the command hal-disable-polling --device /sda, but when I tried that it just returns a message saying that /sda isn't removable media, and thus, polling wasn't running on it to begin with.
The only other option I've seen would be to just remove HAL from the daemons entry in rc.conf, but then what would I do about KDE not showing the drives in Dolphin?
Looking over system logs revealed no errors either.   I'm just at a loss to see how to stop this.
Last edited by Beelzebud (2010-09-20 21:28:00)

ah ha!  I'm an idiot.   I didn't understand how conky could be the culprit, considering I never saw this activity in Gnome.   But just for the sake of troubleshooting, I tried iotop while conky was killed, and the problem was gone.
Then it hit me.    To set up conky with KDE, and make transparency work, you have to use feh to take a snapshot of the desktop background.   Conky was set to 2 second updates, so therefore feh was refreshing as well!
I'm just glad I know exactly what the issue was.    This teaches me to double check the simple things first, before thinking of way more complicated things.    Thanks guys.   Marking this as solved.

  • What's the difference between reguler KDE and KDEmod?

    Hello all,
In two weeks I get my new laptop, which will be capable of running Arch and KDE ( as my current computer isn't, somehow it only runs Fedora w/ Gnome)
Since I really like Arch and already got it working on Virtualbox, I want to install it on my new laptop. I'd like to get it working with KDE, but I noticed Arch also has KDEmod. I already searched the forums but couldn't really find an answer to my question: What is the difference between regular KDE and KDEmod and which one is better for me to use?
    Thanks in advance!

Allan, i forgive you for your poor paragraph construction and sorry for me being a bit peeved
However, i know you have read more from the IRC log than just that one sentence by me...
    Allan wrote:
From the IRC log, I do not think that conclusion is too far off, especially if you are considering Arch-Stable as your base...  So saying "plain wrong" seems... well...  plain wrong. Especially given the irc log:
<funkyou> in one sentence: to do what we really want to do, we need a stable platform.
So why not showing the whole picture and clear this up:
<funkyou> ok, to start: i think at least some of you have noticed that arch linux is a fine platform for what we want to deliver, but there are some little "annoyances"
    <funkyou> mainly:
<funkyou> -.so bumps every few weeks
    <funkyou> -the general "freshness"
<funkyou> -a lot of manual interaction needed (sometimes)
<funkyou> everyone can see these problems when looking at the forums, _most_ of them are related to updates
<funkyou> in one sentence: to do what we really want to do, we need a stable platform.
Makes more sense now? Its not that Arch is too unstable, its just that we cant keep up will all the changes... And this is not Archs "fault" nor anyone elses fault, its just going too fast for us. Most annoying or severe bugs in our tools are there due to upstream updates. And the reasons are not really the .so bumps (which are mostly solved by a simple rebuild) but also constantly changing apis and stuff. This is not a big problem in KDE (they keep their apis clean), but a big one when it comes to other stuff like parted, to give an example. And this is our main problem, we need to constantly adapt our code to upstream changes.
This even resulted in a repo with modified or "frozen" Arch packages just to keep our liveCD going, and now we are looking for solutions for this problem, and "stable" snapshots seem to be one way... Oh, and if we would do this (there is nothing announced yet), we would do our own snapshot every X months because ArchStable seems to be a dead project. We also considered cooperating with the ArchServer guys, but their stuff is really made for servers, so even while their project is really nice its not really an option for us.
Well, we'll see what we will do during the next months, now we are still testing and evaluating some solutions... Oh, and people, please stop any "we dont need another ubuntu" complaints...

I have an Apple MacBook on which Lion 10.7, plus all updates, are successfully installed.
Can you tell me if TechTool Deluxe, normally supplied with Apple here has been now tested and found to run successfully?
I have run the program to check a problem that I'm having. The particularly with video, and also volume structure. TEchTool Delux reports a failure for both of these components.
I am wondering if this is realistic or not, given the start-up screen for TechTool Delux mentions on start-up that it has yet to be tested fully with Lion?
    With thanks, Ron.

Yes, I understand, however, he Macbook is out of its Applecare, but the TechTool it still on the machine. Does that entitle me to an upgrade in TechTool?
I suspect not, hoever, seeing I am running Lion, I am not sure at all? If you can answer this question it will help as then Imight be able to solve the problem I'm having.

We have 2 iPad 2's. For one of them it must be very close to the router to pick up a wifi signal. We have restarted and reset it without success. Using 7.1.1.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at

    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • [Solved] KDE 4.10 : Mounted Android Device as a Camera?

I've been using Arch with MATE Desktop for a long time and then finally made a move to KDE 4.10. I love all features in KDE,
and one of them is auto-mounting Android devices. The problem is, when I plugged in my phone, KDE doesn't recognized it as a USB Storage, but mounted it as 'USB PTP Class Camera'. (I'm using HTC One X)
As a result of this, I can't copy any files to my phone. I have tried other ways such as using go-mtpfs (when I'm using MATE) but still failed. That was actually the main reason why I chose KDE, because of the auto-mount (Android) system. The auto-mount worked, but cut/copy/paste is not. Any help will greatly be appeciated!

Problem solved. Yes, installing kio-mtp solved my problem. KDE is indeed a superior DE. Thanks mzneverdies. I really appreciate  your answer. (Before this I have tried kio-mtp-git from AUR, yeah because I followed the guide from ArchWiki but it failed to get the job done. Somebody please edit that part in ArchWiki.)

  • IE 8 open ods and odt (openoffice) files as .zip

    Hi all,
when I try to open an open office file with IE8 the browser popup try to open/download as .zip .
Someone can help me to understand the reason?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

    Hi Antonio,
By default KM does not have OpenOffice MIME types associations and handles OpenOffice documents as binary files (application/octet-stream). As OpenOffice file format uses zip compression, so it is nothing wrong that IE treats them as zip archives.
You can solve this issue by adding OpenOffice document types in the list for the mimetype handler. Create new Mime types under System Administration -> System Configuration -> Knowledge Management -> Content Management -> Utilities - > Mime Types with these values:
          Name: 'odt'
          Extension: 'odt'
          MIME Type: 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text'
          Name: 'odp'
          Extension: 'odp'
          MIME Type: 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation'
          Name: 'ods'
          Extension: 'ods'
          MIME Type: 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet'
But this solution works only for newly uploaded files since the mimetype configuration, because old documents still have the application/octet-stream mime type.
    Best regards,
    Alexander Zhukau

  • [SOLVED] KDE I/O not working

    Hello, all.
I have a wonderful little laptop running Arch with openbox. Earlier today, I decided to install Kate. In usage, I tried to save my file, at which point Kate crashed. I then re-opened Kate, and tried to open a file, and Kate crashed.
So, I figured it might be a problem with Openbox, so, I installed KDE, and tried to run it in KDE. Well, it turns out, the plasma desktop won't load. It simply loads a white background, starts my programs in the autostart directory, but no desktop.
Here is a screenshot. I opened Firefox from the terminal (Guake is one of my autostart programs) to demonstrate what happens when I open a window.
When I initially installed Arch (about a month ago), I first installed KDE, because it was the easiest to install. Everything worked fine.
A week or so ago, I had customized openbox to my satisfaction, so I uninstalled KDE. Before I did that, KWrite worked just fine. I tried Kwrite today, and I had the same I/O problems.
The KDE Settings manager also refuses to load properly.
Here is a screenshot of my vain attempt to run the KDE settings manager in Openbox (It has worked before).
I found a post on an openSUSE forum with a similar issue. The solution in question did not solve my problem.
I found nothing searching the ArchWiki or the Arch Forums.
Basically, I am having trouble even isolating the problem, let alone solving it. Any help would be appreciated greatly.
    Cheers, Metgz.

Lone wolf: I just re-installed all of KDE, but to no avail.
If I am not mistaken, the 's' will prevent needed packages from being removed, and, because it proceeds 'c', will override it.
    REMOVE OPTIONS
    -c, --cascade
Remove all target packages, as well as all packages that depend on one or more target packages. This operation is recursive, and must be used with care since it
can remove many potentially needed packages.
    -n, --nosave
Instructs pacman to ignore file backup designations. Normally, when a file is removed from the system the database is checked to see if the file should be
    renamed with a .pacsave extension.
    -s, --recursive
Remove each target specified including all of their dependencies, provided that (A) they are not required by other packages; and (B) they were not explicitly
installed by the user. This operation is recursive and analogous to a backwards --sync operation, and helps keep a clean system without orphans. If you want to
omit condition (B), pass this option twice.
    -u, --unneeded
Removes targets that are not required by any other packages. This is mostly useful when removing a group without using the -c option, to avoid breaking any
    dependencies.
hout orphans. If you want to
omit condition (B), pass this option twice.
Perhaps I should be using -Runs instead.
As for more potentially helpful info: I decided to try out various KDE applications to see if they would work. The links go to screenshots.
Dolphin - No (See a screenshot of Nemo for comparison).
    Konsole - Yes
    Konqueror No
    Kate - No
    KWrite - No
    Plasma desktop - No
    KDE system settings - No

Change the player to mplayer or something in the control panel (Sound and Multimedia - System notifications - Player Settings).

Couple of days ago i had installed arch32 from arch64 using this how-to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sw … i686_HOWTO, everything works fine except i needed to reinstall man-db & delete libreoffice configuration dir. Yesterday evening i installed kde, and kdm works just fine, but when starting kde the splash window reaches the first icon & crashesh. xinit/slim do that too, also apps wont start.

  • Is it possible to connect R/3 4.7 (a.k.a Enterprise) and BI7.0/SEM-BCS6.0?

    Hi,
    Does anyone have some experience or knowledge on this question;
is it possible to connect R/3 4.7 (a.k.a Enterprise) and BI7.0/SEM-BCS6.0?
If yes, what is required for R/3 insatallation?
For example, SP updating on PI_BASIS, SAP-BW or so.
    regards,
    Katsumi

    Hi, greg
    Thanks for your experiential reply.
    > it's a pain to rerun iterations with such an interface, though.
I want to know some more, if it colud be.
    And, I'm still afraid of interactivity between R/3 4.7 and SEM-BCS 6.0.
Is there anything required for R/3 insatallation?
    regards,
    Katsumi
