[Solved]KDE fails to load

I just ran an update a few minutes ago, involving a bunch of kde-related stuff.   After the update I noticed I couldn't open kwrite (via the menu), so I tried alt+f2 to open the klauncher.   That didn't open either, so I hit reboot (on the menu).   Instead of showing the usual reboot dialog, with different options, the screen just went black.   So I hit the power button, and booted back up, but starting KDE failed and I was dumped into a terminal.   I'm posting this in Firefox running under an X session.   Not a ton I can do with that.
I noticed that while shutting down, I get a message seemingly about fam not being found in /etc/rc.d.   Could this be the problem?   Any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thanks.
Edit: I looked in /etc/rc.d, and fam is most definitely not there.   Although now I think of it, I was unable to find and start fam when I first installed kdemod4 and Arch a while ago, so I don't think the missing fam is the problem... installed it via pacman, though, and it starts fine, however I can't start hal now.   KDE still won't start, using XFCE for now.
Update: Ended up reinstalling, works fine now.

Hi,
I have sort of the same problem myself as I did a fresh install of Arch yesterday and went with KDE. I remember not even having a fam daemon so I had to pacman it, even after getting it I used the whole:
/etc/rc.d/fam start
/etc/rc.d/hal start
And while that sort of worked I remember getting some missing message beforehand.
Basically, I am able to get into KDE using:
sudo /etc/rc.d/kdm start
Hope that helps, not sure if its a long term solution or not, I'm very new to Arch/Linux, I don't really like KDE anyways, so I might switch to Gnome but best of luck.

    I discovered problem. It's caused by NetworkManager after last update (libsystemd.0.so trouble).
    Recompile pkg by yourself to get working NetworkManager.

  • [SOLVED]Get [FAIL] when loading user specified modules.

    That is it, when the system is booting i get a [FAIL] message when loading user specified modules after upgrading udev, and the kmod new module handling or something as say in the news. I dont have a modprobe.conf or a modprobe.conf.pacsave file either and creating a modprobe.conf file doesn't solve the problem. The strange thing is that the modules are loaded anyways. I mean the ones that are specified in rc.conf. I dont know if the system [FAIL] to load that modules or others...The system works fine for now too.
    Thanks.
    PD: sorry if you notice my poor english.

    I had the same problem and removing the governor performance from rc.conf solved the problem. I tried however to remove both governors and only leave powernow-k8 (this is the only one that works for me) leaving rc.conf like this:
    MODULES=(brcmsmac powernow-k8)
    When I boot the laptop and check which governors are available and being used I get the following:
    [netlak@soulrebel ~]$ cpufreq-info
    cpufrequtils 008: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009
    Report errors and bugs to [email protected], please.
    analyzing CPU 0:
    driver: powernow-k8
    CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0
    CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0
    maximum transition latency: 8.0 us.
    hardware limits: 800 MHz - 2.10 GHz
    available frequency steps: 2.10 GHz, 1.50 GHz, 800 MHz
    available cpufreq governors: performance
    current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 2.10 GHz.
    The governor "performance" may decide which speed to use
    within this range.
    current CPU frequency is 2.10 GHz.
    This like as if the ondemand governor would not be available but when unplugging the laptop and check again I get this:
    [netlak@soulrebel ~]$ cpufreq-info
    cpufrequtils 008: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009
    Report errors and bugs to [email protected], please.

    The governor "ondemand" may decide which speed to use
    within this range.
    current CPU frequency is 800 MHz.
    This shows that the ondemand module can be autoloaded when needed, so I leave rc.conf only with powernow-k8.
    Thanks for your help.

  • [SOLVED] XOrg fails to load Nvidia driver on startup

    Hi,
    I'm having a fairly strange issue where XOrg is failing to load my driver when I start up my laptop. I'm using kdm, but this is causing it to fail. However, doing a simple
    $sudo systemctl restart kdm
    works, and everything starts up fine. When kdm is in the failed state, I see this:
    $sudo systemctl status kdm
    ● kdm.service - K Display Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/kdm.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled)
    Active: active (running) since Fri 2014-12-19 18:47:26 EST; 41s ago
    Main PID: 247 (kdm)
    CGroup: /system.slice/kdm.service
    └─247 /usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
    Dec 19 18:47:26 laptop systemd[1]: Started K Display Manager.

    Dec 19 18:47:27 laptop kdm[247]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled
    And in my XOrg log, I see:

    Hmmmm, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I have a nvidia geforce gtx 670mx. The nvidia website does link me to the 340xx driver for that card, but downgrading to that version still has the same issue. I suspect the issue is in Xorg, since it seems to load the module, but then decides it doesn't have a driver to run for some reason.

  • [Solved] Catalyst fails to load kernel module

    I have just been through the Catalyst install guide, I installed from the Vi0L0 repos rather than building myself.
    Everything appeared to go fine, however fglrx fails to load when I reboot. The xorg log contains;
    fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed. Probably kernel module missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
    fglrx(0): * DRI initialization failed
    fglrx(0): * kernel module (fglrx.ko) may be missing or incompatible
    fglrx(0): * 2D and 3D acceleration disabled
    fglrx(0): **********************************************************
    Is this recoverable? Or does this mean that the current Vi0L0 module has not been built for my kernel (3.11.5-1-ARCH)?

    This issue has now been resolved after the update to xorg 1.14
    lsmod | grep fglrx
    shows fglrx is not loaded, and:
    modprobe fglrx
    returns with;
    modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'fglrx': Exec format error
    Does that indicate a 32/64 bit issue?

    Works here v0.1.34-1. What version are you running?
    Does it occur at boot and/or manual start?
    Have you checked colord's bug tracker? If there's not a report there it's probably worth reporting as even if you have a set-up issue, it shouldn't really core dump.

  • [solved] MySQLd fails to load

    <solution>
    Solved by reinstalling the package...
    </solution>
    Hey,
    Ever since the last mysqld update, it won't load for me.
    First I checked the error logs, but it doesn't have anything usful.
    # tail -n 2 /var/lib/mysql/myhostname.err
    090729 07:02:06 mysqld_safe Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
    090729 07:02:06 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /var/lib/mysql/myhostname.pid ended
    But dmesg is a bit more interesting:
    mysqld[5922] general protection ip:94b9ca sp:7fff769940e0 error:0 in mysqld[400000+818000]
    Frankly though, I have no idea what this 'general protection' message means.
    I tried that chmod thing in the wiki, no help.
    Running mysql 5.1.36-1 on Arch64.
    Also note that even running 'mysqld' alone, 'mysqld --help' or 'mysqld --anything-else' does the same: it dumps a core file, quits and dmesg shows that line.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Yo'av

    I'm running Arch64 and your same version of MySQL and it works.
    I've seen lots of core dumps with various versions of MySQL that I won't be surprised if it were an upstream bug.
    Try opening an bug report at http://bugs.mysql.com/

    Has anyone else had problems loading amazon.com on chromium?
    Been happening with

    Chromium 6.0.472.62
    It started with the version before this one. Basically the moment you go to amazon.com, it fails and says "Aw snap". Don't think its flash, as you tube works fine.

    never mind. I deleted the user config and all is well now.
    delete
    rm -f ~/.cache/chromium/Cache/*
    rm -f ~/.cache/chromium/Media\ Cache/*
    rm -rf ~/.config/chromium
    Don't know what the problem was though, but the solution was offered by clicking on the link "Learn More" under the "Aw Snap" -- They only talk about deleting user data under windows, but I figured it should work for linux as well.
    and it does !!

    Jan 31 20:24:01 laptop slim[325]: (EE) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.
    Jan 31 20:24:01 laptop systemd[1]: Unit slim.service entered failed state.
    I should add.  If I login to a bash prompt, and launch X with startx, it boots to the desktop.

  • [solved] qbittorrent fails to load

    Hi,
    I installed qbittorrent (and rb_libtorrent) from community repo about one month ago (since then I'm using Arch, so I'm pretty new to it, before I was using Ubuntu64). Everything works fine till 13/14. July. On that day there was a qt update and starting qbittorrent leads to an segmentation fault, reinstallation changed nothing. Next day an rb_libtorrent update: no segmentation fault any more, but:
    qbittorrent: error while loading shared libraries: libtorrent-0.13.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    I tried to reinstall, but nothing changed.
    Because there is no update of qbittorrent in community repo yet (for x86_64), I tried to make my own pkgbuild (found some old ones here and modified them). Building and installation worked fine, but qbittorrent don't start either (segmentation fault again).
    What am I doing wrong?
    Hier my pkgbuilds:
    rb_libtorrent
    pkgname=rb_libtorrent
    pkgver=0.13
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A C++ library that aims to be a good alternative to all the other bittorrent implementations around"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    url="http://www.rasterbar.com/products/libtorrent/"
    license=('GPL')
    makedepends=('boost')
    conflicts=('libtorrent')
    source=(http://garr.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/libtorrent/libtorrent-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/libtorrent-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    --disable-debug
    --with-boost-date-time=mt
    --with-boost-filesystem=mt
    --with-boost-thread=mt
    --with-boost-regex=mt
    --with-boost-program_options=mt
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    qbittorrent
    pkgname=qbittorrent
    pkgver=1.0.0
    pkgrel=3
    pkgdesc="A bittorrent client written in C++ / Qt4 using the good libtorrent library"
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    url="http://www.qbittorrent.org/"
    license=('GPL')
    depends=('qt' 'rb_libtorrent' 'curl' 'python' 'boost')
    source=(http://osdn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/qbittorrent/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr --qtdir=/opt/qt4
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    I tried to install qbittorrent in Arch32 (Virtalbox) too (there was an qbittorrent update), but it didn't start either (segmentation fault).
    Qbittorrent is my favorite torrent client, please help me that I could use it again.
    (and sorry for my english ^^)
    Problem solved:
    creating a sym link in /usr/lib/ was the solution:
    ln -sf /usr/lib/libtorrent-rasterbar.so /usr/lib/libtorrent-0.13.so
    Everything is fine again

    Right now, I am having trouble compiling qbittorrent from the aur. For some reason, it keeps spitting that I need a version of libtorrent, which for one thing is wrong because qbittorrent uses rb_libtorrent, and my version of rb_libtorrent is up to date.
    Update: I had to manually get the source from the qbittorrent site and compile it rather than using the version I already had up to make the latest package. I will give this a shot and let you know how it turns out.
    FINAL SOLUTION!
    I just had to rebuild the package, I will upload it to my repository right now.
    pacman -Sy qbittorrent should yield a working product now. Sorry for having it broken, and thank you for bringing this problem to my attention.

  • [SOLVED] KDE Is not loading

    HI, i'm been an archlinux user for a while, never have great issues, but now i reinstalled arch in a formated disk and started all over. The thing is that I installed kde basis (following the wiki), but neither kdm via inittab, or kdm via daemon works! it just load the tt1 console and do nothing. No erors, or something. The only difference with previous installation is that the first time i installed kde-meta package, and have no issues
    Any thoughts?

    Anything in the logs? What happens if you try to start KDE with startx/.xinitrc instead of KDM?

  • [SOLVED] Mkinitcpio fails to load every single module...

    Hello,
    This morning I tried to upgrade my system like every other day, except that this morning, mkinitcpio could not create both fallback and arch images which means I can't boot on my system without a livecd and a chroot now.
    Here is the error list :
    https://gist.github.com/Depado/5795908
    I don't know what happened. I tried to run "pacman -S linux" in chroot but still the same problem.
    Is there something I'm doing wrong ? Did I miss an update on the website ? Do I have to rewrite mkinitcpio.conf ?
    Thanks...
    SOLVED :
    Reinstalling kmod, udev and mkinitcpio solved the problem of building the image.
    Last edited by Depado (2013-06-17 10:51:22)

    I managed to build the image properly. Now I get a "Waiting for device /dev/sda3" issue...
    EDIT : I think that's because I didn't mounted /boot when I built the image. Problem solved.

  • [Solved] Gummiboot fails to load Initramfs

    I installed Arch on two partitions, one encrypted with LVM on LUKS
    (sda2) and a separate /boot partition (sda1). I use gummiboot as my bootloader.
    The gummiboot entry which loads the initramfs looks as follows:
    title Arch linux
    efi \EFI\arch\vmlinuz-linux.efi
    options initrd=\EFI\arch\initramfs-linux.img cryptdevice=/dev/sda2:vgroup root=/dev/mapper/vgroup-root rw acpi_backlight=vendor
    After each kernel update (i.e. rebuilding the initramfs) I manually copy
    the images to where the loader entries point.
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux.img /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/vmlinuz-linux.efi
    (Actually I'm not sure if I need the .efi extension on vimlinuz-linux,
    so I copy them both...)
    When this Laptop boots, it shows the gummiboot loader and I select the
    "Arch Linux" entry. With the last kernel update, when I hit the "Arch
    Linux" boot entry, the screen goes black for some seconds, then the
    whole screen gets pixelated with some colorful static noise.
    It looks like the initramfs is corrupted/not found, so chrooted into my
    system from the live installer and reinstalled the kernel, mkinitcpio
    and gummiboot ('linux' 3.12.7-2, 'gummiboot' 41-1, 'mkinitcpio' 16-2).
    I also re-ran
    gummiboot install
    Still, the system refuses to boot.
    Since I get no error output at all, I can't provide much more debug
    information. I am aware of a rather large number of threads but in
    virtually all of those cases the boot process crashes with some helpful
    error messages...
    Anyone got some helpful hint? It looks like I am missing something
    obvious.

    By the way, why are you copying your bootimages manually? Your folders seem odd to me, but maybe thats just a lack of information on my side.
    An loader entry on my box looks like this:
    root@x230 /boot/loader/entries # cat arch.conf
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 quiet rw init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd add_efi.memmap acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
    The .img files are simply in /boot where mkinitcpio puts them after the kernel update.

  • [SOLVED] KDE fails to start (kdeinit4)

    Hi everyone,
    I installed KDE 4.5 today, and when I start the session, it displays the splash screen but crash and show me the error message
    "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation."
    I already looked for information in the wiki and google, and I'm really lost.
    Thanks for you help.

    I fixed. The solution is to edit /usr/bin/startkde:
    LD_BIND_NOW=true /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/start_kdeinit_wrapper +kcminit_startup
    if test $? -ne 0; then
    # Startup error
    echo 'startkde: Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation.' 1>&2
    test -n "$ksplash_pid" && kill "$ksplash_pid" 2>/dev/null
    xmessage -geometry 500x100 "Could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation$
    exit 1
    fi
    and break the line:
    LD_BIND_NOW=true
    /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/start_kdeinit_wrapper +kcminit_startup
    That's all
