[solved] kde without arts - problem with aplay/knotify

Hi,
I finally got convinced to switch of arts for kde. Amarok runs much better now but I face a problem with knotify/aplay.
With arts not active knotify won't play sounds anymore. knotify is the program responsible for kde's bells and whistles, like playing a sound when you open or close a window etc.
knotify specifies an option for an external player, which I think is the thing to use in case you don't use arts.
I configured that option to use aplay, the sound replay program provided by alsa. However, that has problems. Many kde sounds come with 8khz sample frequency. If I play one of these sounds with aplay their playback frequency is much to low and the sound is heavily distorted. It seems the downmixing does not work.
If I use aplay -Ddmix or -Dduplex I get following error:
Playing raw data 'KDE_Beep.ogg' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:857: Sample format non available
I think that may have something to do with my .asoundrc or maybe there is another program to use for sound playback I don't know about. Also, I could be that knotify IS supposed to play the sounds even without arts running and something else is wrong.
Here is my .asoundrc, any advice is welcome:
# Set default sound card
# Useful so that all settings can be changed to a different card here.
pcm.snd_card {

# Allow reading from the default device.
# Also known as record or capture.

slave.pcm "snd_card"

# This is what we want as our default device

# rate to be selected on the fly.
# duplex mode allows any alsa enabled app to read/write
# to the dmix plug (Fixes a problem with wine).

# Apparently this is wrong (breaks mplayer for me opening the device)
#ctl.!default {

# AOSS #
# OSS dsp0 device
pcm.dsp0 {

slave.pcm "duplex"
# OSS control for dsp0 (needed?...this might not be useful)
ctl.dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "snd_card"
# OSS control for dsp0 (default old OSS is mixer0)
ctl.mixer0 {

slave.pcm "snd_card"
Cheers,
Dominik

Ok, I came to a solution.
My .asoundrc was ok. It was aplay that I wasn't aware of it couldn't handle .ogg files, it tried to play it anyway and that's why I got garbled sound output *headdesk*
I installed alsaplayer, after running it once I edited .alsaplayer/config to use the "text" user interface by default. Setting alsaplayer as external player for knotify seems to work.
However, knotify won't let me play sounds in quick succession, so I lose a knotify sound every now and then.

  • Can SAP GRC AC 5.3 connect without any problem with SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise?

    hello,
    I went to the PAM in the SAP Marketplace to see if SAP GRC AC 5.3 could connect to SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise but I can't see all the "Add-On Product Version for...", it's cut off.
    Can SAP GRC AC 5.3 connect without any problem with SAP R/3 4.7 Enterprise?
    If I can't is there any proof about it? I have to show it to a client.
    Best Regards,
    Pablo Mortera,

    Pablo,
    GRC AC 5.3 works perfectly fine with SAP's R/3 4.6c, mySAP ERP 4.7 and ECC systems. In fact we have two 4.7 Enterprise systems connected to GRC AC 5.3 system.
    You can get the details of supported SAP ERP systems under prerequisite section of Info page of GRC AC 5.3 , it can be accessed on marketplace at -
    Downloads-->Installations and Upgrades - Entry by Application Group > SAP Solutions for Governance, Risk, and Compliance>SAP GRC Access Control>SAP GRC ACCESS CONTROL>SAP GRC ACCESS CONTROL 5.3
    Just ensure to have proper BASIS and ABAP support pack level as mentioned in prerequisites.

    The only way to move files or folders/subfolders without causing problems, that is not creating 'missing files' is to do this from within the Organizer, not the OS (Win/Mac).
    You can create folders and move pictures from the Organizer.
    Note that if you are moving the files of several subfolders into a single one, you run the risk of wanting to move files with the same filename into the same folder ; your OS won't allow that. So the Organizer will rename pictures if needed.
    If you want to do such a big reorganizing task, absolutely do a full backup before. There is no advantage  for such a reorganizing from an Organizer point of view, but if you need it for some reason, it has to be done from within the organizer.

  • [Solved] MSI GT60, Major Problem With Updating

    Hi everyone, I've owned a GT60 since about January and I've had a few more minor problems so far, but now a rather annoying one.
    I cannot update anything it seems, I've got numerous messages to install 8.1 for free, despite having downloaded and installed it a few times. When I download and install it no changes are made but it says the install happened and was successful. I now have this problem with a new version of Java, it asks me if the program can make changes to my computer once every session, even though I've downloaded it and clicked yes a few times.
    On a side note, just today my audio stopped working. When I plug in headphones the audio comes in but all crackly. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them, still wont work.
    Thanks for any help

    Quote from: Niloc;104288
    Can you be more specific with which upgrades I've installed, do you mean windows updates or every single update for anything ever installed? What do you mean by run the windows 8.1 upgrade from market? If you mean did I download from there and then hit run when the little pop up comes on screen, then I did that. If I restore the system, will i lose anything? I'll give those instructions a try then. I should also have mentioned that everything was installing properly, until the update was released and I tried to install it. It never worked and then Java was giving me problems, and I had the audio problem, so I finally decided it was time to ask for some help lol.
    About the audio, I only get the crackling from my headphones, the speaker is dead silent. Its also not just pure crackling, like songs sound mostly normal and understandable but with some crackling. I found that if I turn my volume just a few clicks up from being mute, there's no crackling. Its almost as if my volume is too loud at a normal volume and its blowing the speakers.
    Thanks for the info
    If you do a system restore, the system will be back to the factory settings which mean yes, you're personal data and self-install programs will be deleted.
    *Make sure you backup all your personal data!
    You can use F3 function to do the system restore and do the update after.
    (Power on the notebook and press F3 after MSI logo shows up, and follow the instruction for the system recovery)
    1.Execute MSI BurnRecovery Tool to create Windows 8 recovery discs.
    2.Back up all personal files
    3.Uninstall both NVIDIA and Intel VGA driver.
    4.Uninstall touchpad driver.
    5.Run Microsoft Windows Update. (Press WIN>search windows update>check for updates) *Make sure you install all important and optional updates.
    6.Restart you notebook.
    7.Check again if there is any available updates in Windows Update and do restart after the installation. (Repeat the updates till you don't see any updates available.)
    8.Press WIN key and choose Market.(You should see the big "Update to Windows 8.1 for free" button and click it to start the update.)
    9. System reboot after finishing the update
    10. Go to MSI website and download+install the latest drivers.(including vga drivers and touchpad driver..etc)
    For the audio: Try to uninstall the audio driver and reboot the system and see if the speakers work without Realtek audio driver.

  • KDE 4.10 - Problems with Plastik window theme

    There seems to be several problems with the Plastik window decoration theme in KDE 4.10:
    * When switching between windows the window decoration flickers several times and takes about a second to update the colours
    * The font baseline is too high
    * The button positions are messed up
    It does not seem to affect any other themes.
    It has worked perfectly in all previous 4.x releases.

    There is a bug report about this:

  • [SOLVED] xfce-panel causing problems with mouse/touchpad

    Since upgrading the packages below  I mouseclicks occasionally do not work.  Also scrolling using the scrollwheel and touchpad doesn't start sometimes. I determined it is not a problem with the mouse or touchpad because 'xev' shows the correct events firing. Also  I see the icon change from arrow to hand when clicking.
    <edit>
    It appears that "xfce4-panel" is the cause. I use tint2 instead of  xfce-panel, but the process running an empty panel is started by default and  somehow interfered with mouse and touchpad events. solved it by removing it from the session, and comment it out in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml

    I'm new to Archlinux (and don't have too much experience on Linux) and searched everywhere in this forum and on Google but couldn't find out how to solve my problem.
    I'm using Archlinux x86_64... my video card is an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro (pretty old) and I can't enable Composite on KDE 4.3 (not KDEMod) to enable transparency and some animation, using OpenGL (with XRender it works, but it also gets extremely slow...)

  • Sync and album art problems with iPhone 3G

    The other day my iPhone was sitting in the cradle syncing and I noticed iTunes (8.02) was deleting the apps from the phone. I cancelled that sync and in iTunes I saw that the "Sync Applications" checkbox was unchecked, but I hadn't unchecked it. I then rechecked the box and synced my apps back onto the phone.
    Today I added some songs to a playlist and synced, but the sync time seemed suspiciously short. When I checked iTunes I saw that all of my sync content boxes were unchecked...Sync Music, Sync Videos, etc. When I check one of the boxes iTunes threatens to delete all the content presently on my phone and replace it with content from the library....which is of course the same content except for the few songs I copied into one playlist. I don't really want to sit around and wait until this stupid phone replaces 15gb of content with the same 15gb of content. Sometimes this thing acts like such a piece of junk.
    Perhaps this is related, but some weeks ago I purchased a Colbie Caillat album from the ITMS. Whenever I play a song from this purchase on my iPhone it shows the album art for an Usher album I already had in my library. If I play the same song on one of my iPods, the album art is correct. Apparently some sort of corruption is afoot in either iTunes, the iPhone or both. Is there some way to get iTunes and the iPhone on the same page without having to wipe and restore this stupid phone? Thanks.

    I bit the bullet and checked all the boxes and synced, and the phone did not go through with the threat to erase all my content. It just synced the one changed playlist instead. False alarm. However, the album art issue remains.

  • Cover Art Problems with iTunes Library on a NAS

    I have my iTunes library stored on a Synology NAS.  I use a networked Mac Mini as a dedicated iTunes player, I set it up so the Mac Mini finds my iTunes library on the NAS.  The cover art for all of my movies that I ripped from my home DVD collection shows up fine in iTunes.  But the cover art for movies that I downloaded from iTunes does not show up, either in iTunes on my Mac Mini, or on my AppleTV (2nd Gen).  I suspect the problem comes from the fact that I keep the iTunes library in a separate place (on the NAS) rather than on the computer that runs iTunes.  Is there a fix to this?

    I'm having troubles with my Itunes in combination with the synology server as well...
    I'm getting audio from the server, all of this is working great.... But I'm not getting any cover art! I'm also not getting the optn to view the info of tracks. This is all working when I'm listing to track placed on my Mac in stead of the server.
    Could you help me setting up de synology? Is there any structure neccesary on the server? Could you send me a screen grab of yours?

  • [Solved] gsimplecal auto focus problem with openbox+tint2

    I'm using these apps described above.
    Well, after I click the clock in tint2, the gsimplecal shows, but, it won't get focus automatically, which annoyed me a lot.
    I've already set <focusNew>yes</focusNew> in my openbox/rc.xml.
    Also, I noticed that even started from terminal, the gsimplecal window won't get the focus.
    Is this a bug (or f**king feature) of gsimplecal? I installed it yesterday by yaourt -S gsimplecal-git.
    Thank you.
    This problem is solved by adding a per-application setting to openbox, as described in the gsimplecal wiki.
    Adding the <focus>yes</focus> is enough, it doesn't need that much.

    This seems to be related to the skip_taskbar window hint (set to true by default), as of gsimplecal v0.6 you can override it with the following in your config:
    mainwindow_skip_taskbar = 0

  • [Solved] Chromium and WebGL problem with Body Browser

    Hi,
    I'm having problems running (the wonderful) body browser WebGL demo from google labs, using Chromium 10.0.620.0 (70039).
    My graphic card is an intel 4500mhd.
    Most WebGL demos works fine, but with this one I get a black (not shaded or textured) 3D model.
    I also have a "unable to load libGLESv2.so" warning.
    As suggested by someone, I rebuild Mesa package with ABS, adding the flags:
    --enable-egl
    --enable-gles2
    Now WebGL doesn't work at all, libGLESv2 warning is gone, but I get "unable to load st_GL.so"...
    Ideas?
    Last edited by mr.entropy (2011-02-04 18:02:32)

    I tried both versions, with or without --enable-webgl switch (in version 10 webgl seems to be enabled by default).
    Webgl in version 8 can be enabled typing about:flags too.
    I always get a black 3D model
    As I said, other webgl demos works fine.
    lagagnon, which is your graphic card?

  • Can anyone solve this simple MVC problem with ArrayCollection

    I have very simple application trying to understand how to apply MVC without any framework. There are quite a few exemples on the net but most do not deal with complex data.
    here is my application with 4 files: MVCtest.mxml, MyController.as, MyModel.as and MyComponent.as
    first the Model MyModel.as
    package model
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
    import flash.events.IEventDispatcher;
    import mx.collections.ArrayCollection;
    [Event(name="ArrayColChanged", type="flash.events.Event")]
    [Bindable]
    public class MyModel extends EventDispatcher
      private static var instance:MyModel;
      public static const ARRAYCOL_CHANGED:String = "ArrayColChanged";
      private var _myArrayCol:ArrayCollection;
      public function MyModel(target:IEventDispatcher=null)
       super(target);
       instance = this;
      public static function getInstance():MyModel
       if(instance == null)
        instance = new MyModel();
       return instance;
      public function get myArrayCol():ArrayCollection
       return _myArrayCol;
      public function set myArrayCol(value:ArrayCollection):void
       _myArrayCol = new ArrayCollection(value.source);
       dispatchEvent(new Event(ARRAYCOL_CHANGED));
    then the controller: MyController.as
    package controller
    import components.MyComponent;
    import flash.events.Event;
    import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
    import flash.events.IEventDispatcher;
    import model.MyModel;
    import mx.collections.ArrayCollection;
    import mx.controls.Alert;
    import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent;
    import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
    import mx.rpc.remoting.RemoteObject;
    public class MyController extends EventDispatcher
      [Bindable]
      public var view:MVCtest;
      [Bindable]
      public var componentView:MyComponent;
      private var _model:MyModel = MyModel.getInstance();
      public function MyController(target:IEventDispatcher=null)
       super(target);
       _model.addEventListener("ArrayColChanged", onArrayColChange);
      public function initialise(event:Event):void
       getData();
      public function getData():void
       var dataRO:RemoteObject = new RemoteObject;
       dataRO.endpoint = "gateway.php";
       dataRO.source = "MytestdbService";
       dataRO.destination = "MytestdbService";
       dataRO.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, dataROResultHandler);
       dataRO.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT, dataROFaultHandler);
       dataRO.getAllMytestdb();
      public function dataROResultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void
       _model.myArrayCol = new ArrayCollection((event.result).source);
      public function dataROFaultHandler(event:FaultEvent):void
       Alert.show(event.fault.toString());
      public function onArrayColChange(event:Event):void
       componentView.myDataGrid.dataProvider = _model.myArrayCol;
    This is the main application: MVCtest.mxml

      </s:columns>
    </s:DataGrid>
    </s:Group>
    Here is the code to generate the database:
    CREATE DATABASE mytest;
    CREATE TABLE myTestDB
          myid INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
          mystring CHAR(15) NOT NULL,
          myinteger INT NOT NULL,
          myreal DECIMAL(6,2) NOT NULL,
          mydate DATE NOT NULL,
          PRIMARY KEY(myid)
    ) ENGINE = InnoDB;
    INSERT INTO myTestDB (mystring, myinteger, myreal, mydate) VALUES ('Test', 123, 45.67, '2012-01-01'), ('Practice', 890, 12.34, '2012-02-01'), ('Assay', 567, 78.90, '2011-10-01'), ('Trial', 111, 22.22, '2009-09-09'), ('Experiment', 333, 44.44, '1999-04-15'), ('Challenge', 555, 66.66, '2012-12-21');
    And finally here is the PHP script.
    <?php
    class myVOorDTO
      var $_explicitType = "valueObjects.myVOorDTO";
      public $myid;
      public $mystring;
      public $myinteger;
      public $myreal;
      public $mydate;
      public function __construct()
        $this->myid = 0;
        $this->mystring = "";
        $this->myinteger = 0;
        $this->myreal = 0.0;
        $this->mydate = date("c");
    class MytestdbService
      var $username = "yourusername";
      var $password = "yourpassword";
      var $server = "yourserver";
      var $port = "yourport";
      var $databasename = "mytest";
      var $tablename = "mytestdb";
      var $connection;
      public function __construct()
        $this->connection = mysqli_connect(
        $this->server, $this->username, $this->password, $this->databasename, $this->port);
    * Returns all the rows from the table.
    * @return myVOorDTO
      public function getAllMytestdb()
        $query = "SELECT * from $this->tablename";
        $result = mysqli_query($this->connection, $query);
        $results = array();
        while ($obj = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result))
          $row = new myVOorDTO();
          $row->myid = $obj['myid'] + 0;
          $row->mystring = $obj['mystring'];
          $row->myinteger = $obj['myinteger'] + 0;
          $row->myreal = $obj['myreal'] + 0.0;
          $row->mydate = new Datetime($obj['mydate']);
          array_push($results, $row);
        return $results;
    ?>
    My understanding as to what is going on is: (1) on creation complete the application launch the initialise() function of the controller (2) this function starts the remoteObject which get the data (3) once the results arrive the resultHandler store the data into the ArrayCollection of the model ***this does not work*** (4) even if part 3 did not work, the setter of the ArrayCollection in the model send an event that it has been changed (5) the controller receive this event and assigns the ArrayCollection of the model as the dataprovider for the datagrid in the compoent.
    Of course, since the ArrayCollection is null, the application gives an error as the dataProvider for the datagrid is null.
    What is missing in this application to make it work properly? I believe this is an example that could help a lot of people.
    Even if I change the setter in the model to _myArrayCol = ObjectUtil.copy(value) as ArrayCollection; it still does not work.
    Also, it seems that the remoteObject does not return a typed object (i.e. myVOorDTO) but rather generic objects. I am usually able to make this works but in this particular application I have not managed to do it. Again what's missing?
    Thanks for any help with this!

  • [SOLVED] I got a problem with importing libboost

    When I compile graph-tool from AUR, there are no error messages. But When I want to start it, I get the following:
    ImportError: libboost_thread.so.1.54.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    When I look into my lib folder, I realize that my version is libboost_thread.so.1.55.0. What did go wrong during compilation?
    edit: karol's Post solved it for me: Recompiling Cgal with the new boost packages. Thank you!

    When dealing with AUR packages, you need to recompile all of them, not only graph-tool, but also its dependencies (unless they're in the official repos). It you don't, you system is not fully up to date.
    Please recompile cgal and see if it fixes your issue.
