[Solved] (kernel 2.6.27) System freeze at boot.

Hi, after kernel upgrade system freezes at boot on "Loading UDev Uevents" when modem Thomson SpeedTouch 330 is plugged in. When modem is off Arch start normally.

I can confirm this, plus if you plug in SpeedTouch 330 after booting, it obviously doesn't work.

  • [SOLVED] Switch to systemd - Now system won't boot

I saw that todays update upgrade included the installation of systemd. I looked the wiki and did the necessary changes (I already had made the /etc/hostname etc. files). So I added the
    init=/bin/systemd
line to grub and now my system won't boot. I get an error saying something about syslog service not enabled and then a black screen. I can boot my machine fine without the "init=/bin/systemd" line but I want to run a pure systemd system since Arch is moving to it anyway. In the wiki it mentions to install systemd-sysvcompat but it conflicts with initscripts it says. What am I doing wrong or missing?

when I try to enable alsa and dbus I get this
    [root@andre ~]# systemctl enable alsa-store.service
The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.
    [root@andre ~]# systemctl enable alsa-restore.service

    [root@andre ~]# systemctl enable dbus.service
The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.
Is LVM handled automatically by systemd? The reason I ask is because I have the USELVM= set to YES in rc.conf.
I made the permanent transition to systemd and did not start alsa at all - sound works fine - so I never bothered with the alsa-store/alsa-restore service files at all - it just works! Also dbus gets handled by default in systemd so you don't need any starting of dbus service at all... it just works.

  • [Solved/Workaround] System freeze during boot on Intel NUC DN2820FYKH

Edit: When using the latest mainline kernel from here (3.14rc5 at the time of writing) all the problems go away. I'm hoping that this means I simply have to wait for 3.14 to release and hit [core] eventually. Also, my system clock *was* set incorrectly, because "ntpd -q" didn't print any sort of warning when I forgot the "-g" parameter.
Original message preserved in case anyone has the same problem:
On a fresh install, if I boot the latest kernel (3.13.5-1 at the time of writing) booting will stop midway through the systemd startup sequence. The specific line it ends on varies, sometimes it's "Starting Sound Card", other times it's "Starting Load/Save Random Seed." The system cursor stop blinking.
Adding debug to my boot parameters gives a large number of errors along the line of "Assertion: dual_timestamp_is_set has failed in sd_event_now_get_monotonic".
After this boot continues for a while, before freezing as described, without any sort of error or noteworthy output (as far as I can tell.)
Using the latest lts kernel (3.10.32-1) boot does finish, although it gives the same Assertion error as above. Also, the i915 module gives the error "preliminary hardware support disabled" and no modesetting is done. When trying to start X there are "No screens found"
As far as I can tell, the system clock and all related config files are configured correctly. All packages are up to date.
The system is an Intel NUC DN2820FYKH with a Bay Trail Celeron N2820 processor. For full specs:

Heres what I see after everything > 3.12.9 . It has a blinking cursor underneath that freezes, hdd light then stays on solid and doesn't do anything.

  • Error loading OS (first boot-up, new system, freeze at boot-up)

I have built up a new system with:
    CPU: AMD3 Phenom II X4 945
    Board: MSI-7642 (890GXM-G65)
    Memory: DDR3 Dominator 2x2GB 1600Mhz
    Drive: SATAII 700GB Western Digital
I am using the onboard graphics card
I built the system up, turned it on and have the message:
    Error loading OS
(the system then freezes on that message)
at startup there is a single beep, the message "Error loading OS" is straight after the v890GXM-G65 splash. There is no BIOS message on the monitor, no RAM count, no chance to get into BIOS.
Basically immediately after the MSI splash the error message shows.
I would like to boot from my windows XP install CD and format the Hard-Drive and install Windows.
After reading similar messages in the Forum I will:
*reset the BIOS with the mainboard jumpers
*set the Harddrive to SATA-I speed with the jumpers
does anyone have any other suggestions?
I don't have another PC that I can format my Harddrive on; it was formatted before simply with one partition (not a boot partition) as a backup drive.
Seems to be a common problem, the "Error loading OS", pity MSI doesn't have a error code listing somewhere.

I managed to sort the problem out.
It seems that the BIOS system (Version 1.2) didn't accept hard drives when they are inappropriately formatted. It also had a problem with the USB Keyboard.
I managed to sort this out by connecting SATA Harddrive that was used in my pervious system, which had windows XP already installed on it. Surprisingly this was not only accepted by the BIOS, I didn't have to reinstall Windows or any programmes at all - although the previous system ran on a Gigabyte Board, with a 939 socket AMD processor!
Another problem was that my Keysonic Intuition-XL ACK-5600 USB2 keyboard wasn't accepted by the BIOS in the "new system state". Only after I had windows running, and the mainboard USB2 chipset drivers were installed in windows, was the USB2 keyboard accepted by windows or the BIOS. I couldn't connect a PS2 keyboard to the main board, because there is only one PS2 connector - which is taken be the mouse (more necessary for windows than a keyboard). Perhaps the BIOS had a problem with the keyboard, because it houses USB ports and audio connections.
    The conclusion:
*The MSI-7642 (890GXM-G65) mainboard only accepted a SATA drive with a primary bootable partition. I couldn't start up with a Installation CD and install any drive.
*The USB Keyboard didn't function during the BIOS boot until I installed the mainboard USB Chipset drivers in windows XP. This is strange, as normally the BIOS should be totally independent of the OS . The Keyboard itself doesn't need a windows driver.
;-))For a system builder it is advised to format SATA drives as primary bootable drives before building the system, and use a "simple" USB keyboard (with no electronic or ports), or better a PS2 Keyboard.

  • System freezed after "startx"

    Hello,
after updating with "pacman -Syu" my system freezes after boot-process at the loginscreen.
To be more exact: When X starts, all my input-devices doesn't react anymore. Even new plugged-in keyboards doesn't do something.
Numlock doesn't change lights on my keyboard.
As far as i know pacman shows me while updating a message about udev.
Pacman has updated udev, kernel26 and some other packages.
In GRUB I've appended "single" to get a terminal after booting and before X starts.
I've tried to reset X by replacing xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup, but no effect.
Everytime I enter "startx" in the terminal, I can see some white textboxes, but can't move my mouse or enter anything with my keyboard.
Hardreset is the only thing, that helps.
So anybody know what to do in this situation or has any tips for me?
I would appreciate it if somebody can help me... thanks in advance!

Yes, I have a .xinitrc in my $HOME.
I've tried several things and found out, that not X is the problem alone.
It's more the udev update, which doesn't recognize my hardware anymore.
When I type in startx in tty, X now starts with my KDE, where I could see, that stuff is loading (so it's not freezed).
But KDE alerts me, that some audio hardware were removed and even in tty i couldn't mount my usb harddrive or start my notebook-wlan.
So I came to the conclusion, that only my hardware were not recognized..
Is there a way to get udev recognize my hardware again? I've even downgraded udev and kernel26 to versions, which worked properly..., but that doesn't help.
    hope you can help.. =/

  • W530 freezing on boot when CSM enabled

So, i have this rather strange problem:
While most people encounter issues when they want to boot with UEFI, i can boot UEFI just fine, but am having issues when trying to boot having the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) of my W530 enabled. CSM still boots my Arch via UEFI, but emulates some features of a BIOS system (like running/loading the VGA BIOS). And funny enough, my system only boots if the Firmware is NOT doing this.
I used a pure UEFI boot for quite some time, simply because the CSM is slowing down my boot, and i don't need it for Linux or Windows to work. However, I ran into some problems with the proprietary nvidia-driver lately (not part of this thread) and tried to boot with CSM enabled, to see if it fixes anything.
When i try to boot with CSM enabled, there seems to be a race condition. In rare cases, the system simply boots, but in most cases, the Laptop completely freezes, some time after starting udev (i think). But even if i enable kernel debug messages, the system freezes before showing anything related in the output. The last message from the journal is about starting udev, no error messages seem to be logged. Magic SysRQ does not work either.
Has anyone of you experienced a similar problem?
Can someone tell me a bit more specific what the CSM of a Lenovo W530 does? Maybe I can disable a few modules for troubleshooting?
And what would be a good way to debug the boot process, if everyhting is freezing? I could think of disabling udev, and listing modules statically, but how do i know which modules are required?
    Thanks in advance for helping.

I am on a pure UEFI setup with secure boot disabled. I have a T530.
I cannot boot the discrete card (remember, the T530 has a different nvidia card nowhere near as good as yours) without a kernel panic occuring at EXACTLY the same point you mention. If I add 'noapic' to the kernel line, it boots fine on the discrete card. My DPI settings are all wacked out then though (compared to using the intel card). I have no issues with the discrete card using bumblebee (except that it sucks ).
I dont think my info really helps you, but I figured id mention it in case it gives you any clue. Let me know if you want me to try something..

  • [SOLVED (in kernel 3.8.8)] Random complete system freezes

I have installed Arch Linux on my desktop, however I am getting random complete system freezes when I use either GNOME Shell or KDE 4 when using OpenGL compositing. I have resorted to using Xfce (which uses Xrender for compositing).
Sometimes the system freezes immediately upon login.
Sometimes GNOME Shell says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." and forces me out.
Sometimes the system works fine for an hour or so before it freezes.
Sometimes the driver appears to have crashed but then recovers (screen goes blank for a second and windows/decorations are redrawn, then works fine until it completely freezes again).
I am using the xf86-video-ati driver with a ATI Radeon HD 3850. I suspect the problem is with the video driver and/or kernel.
    I have tried:
    - Using Alt+SysRq+? keystrokes after adding kernel.syseq=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf (system doesn't respond at all once frozen)
    - Keeping an SSH connection open (SSH client says "host down" once the computer is frozen)
    - Doing a memtest (ran for 11 hours with no problems)
    - Redownloading and reinstalling all packages from a different mirror (no improvement)
    - Disabling KMS (GNOME Shell runs very slow, at wrong resolution, and the resolution settings doesn't give me the option of the correct resolution)
    - Adding radeon.agpmode=-1 to my kernel parmaters (no improvement)
    - Edit: Also I tried installing linux-lts (GDM and GNOME Shell graphics ends up all broken)
I was previously using Fedora 17 with the open source driver without any problems.

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • Memory issues - kernel panics / system freezes with 1Gb Memory Card

I've recently updated my PowerBook OS to 10.4.7 and now more recently 10.4.8.
Prior to this, i had been running a pair of pc2700 memory cards (1x1Gb + 1x 512Mb) bought from crucial technology on 10.3.9 with no problems.
During the upgrade, i experienced complete system lock ups and kernel panics. pulling the 1Gb card resolved the problem.
So i thought it could be duff memory (it happens). I ran hardware checker, both long and short tests, ran memchecker from single user and there was no reported errors although i was still getting crashes.
I returned the memory to crucial and they replaced it and then i went to reinstall memory in the pb.
Once reinstalled, problems re-emerged. Both System profiler and iStat pro show both memory sticks as ok. both are pc2700 DDR.
i tried just the 1 Gb stick in alternate memory slots. with the memory in the lower slot i was getting system freezes, in the top slot i was getting kernel panics.
I've pulled the 1Gb and reverted to 768Mb (512Mb lower (crucial)/ 256MB (apple) upper) and i'm back to normal.
    Now what?
As my mac is getting on, i'd like to get as much RAM in it as i can, ideally the 1.5Gb /2Gb which it can support. I'd be suprised if it could be the memory stick being duff (2 duff in a row?), its not a faulty memory slot as system profiler is showing that its full.
Any suggestions? Anything to do with how 10.4.8 handles the memory addressing?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    PowerBook G4 1Ghz FW800   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've had that problem, too. I found out that it was one of my memory modules that were broken.
I'd say pop back in your other memory module, then get out your PowerBook DVD and stick it in Restart your PowerBook while holding down the Option Key on your keyboard until some buttons start to show up on your screen.
Select the Hardware Test one, then click the Arrow button. It'll boot into a utility and you can run a hardware test that includes checking your memory.
If any of your memory is bad, it'll show up like "**ERROR ERROR**" and give you a code.
After you've identified the hardware problem (hopefully just the RAM), then you can go to Crucial's website and fill out an RMA request to have the memory replaced. I'm pretty sure Crucial has a life-time warranty on their memory products.

  • [SOLVED]Random system freezes

    Hello,
My Dell Studio 1558 runs ArchLinux with XFCE. Everything is fine except two problems: Random system freezes and slow wlan download speed. I think that those problems might be related.
Since some updates ago my Laptop will just randomly freeze. Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly when it started. The freezes will randomly appear without any regularity or possibility to reproduce. Sometimes it freezes immediately after booting, sometimes after some hours. Heating should be no problem as it also freezes when the Laptop is cold (what a joke )
Sometimes it will freeze several times in a row, sometimes it won't freeze a whole day. It seems that it only freezes if there is Wireless LAN connection available. (I use wicd if that is of any importance.). It feels like the highest freeze rate is while downloading packages for system updates...
lspci tells about the wireless chip:
    04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
    uname -a
    Linux mydell 2.6.38-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 30 08:47:36 CEST 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
So, according to the wiki page I use the broadcom-wl driver from AUR. I also tried the DKMS one which, of course, changed nothing. My modules array concerning broadcom looks like
    MODULES=(!b43 !ssb !lib80211 !brcm80211 lib80211_crypt_tkip wl)
I ran memtest over several hours to make sure it's no memory problem. No errors in 5 passes. It has an ATI Chip which is powered by catalyst right now... Could be the source of the problem but I guess I'd have to test that further.
Additionally I suffer slooooow download speed over wireless LAN since some periond (can't remember the exact starting point too...). It's not related to my AP, happens in other networks too. I tried several servers too. Max download speed: 148 kb/s :S
I suspect that the freezes and the slow download speed are releated. Maybe a driver issue? I have no clue. I was unlucky to find error reports in the logs after the freezes. Besides, I have no real idea what to search for in the logs. I placed a desklet on my desktop now, to see the exact time and seconds when the freeze appears. I hope I'll be lucky.
Can someone help me or give me some ideas what to do?
    Edit:
There was another kernel upate and at least the low speed is gone... strange. Hope the same is for the freezes :S
    Edit 2:
Downgrading pm-utils to 1.3.0 did the trick for me. No freezes anymore.

So, the freezes are still there. I also tried the open source ATI driver. My laptop will still freeze randomly. The highest freeze rate was during operations with pacman/clyde. I think this might point to either WLAN or HDD.
I placed a desklet clock on my desktop and I could finally see the exact time when my laptop froze! But I cannot find anything interesting in the logfiles.
This should be the last lines that were written before the freeze occurec in everything.log.

My laptop sometimes hangs at boot with this screen. I cannot take some usful information from it. But it seems, that it's also related to networking stuff? But I am not sure if that's the cause for my problem.
I am lost. I have no real idea what to do. I think of using some other distribution in order to see if the freezes will occur there too. I hope this is "just" a driver issue...

  • Random system freezes - "kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:427!"

    Hi there,
I got some weird problem: From time to time my system freezes randomly (and completely - hard reset). This was not always the case. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact date of the beginning of this freezes (and if I could I wouldn't know what I had done before), but in my humble oppinion the problem occurs since the upgrade to linux-3.1.6. Right now I'm running 3.1.9
After shutting down my notebook (a Thinkpad L520, Sandy Bridge), often I can't even properly start it again (mostly just black screen - does nothing). In that case I usually remove the battery, wait a few seconds, put it back in and then the computer boots without problems.
Sometimes (e.g. at the time of writing this) this problem occurs more often than usual.
Until today I had no clue what caused this. I disabled a lot of functionalities in the BIOS, unplugged everything (second monitor, etc.), did a memtest86 (without errors). A few hours ago I luckily got a kernel panic message on my screen (I assume it got there "before it was too late"). See a "screenshot" of here: http://i.imgur.com/LdgFE.jpg
The "kernel BUG at fs/inode.c:427!" line got my attention - could this be a filesystem bug? I got an Intel 310 Series SSD in my notebook, running ext4 on it. Could it be possible that there is some issue with that or just an annoying bug?
    Maybe someone can help
    For the curious:

  • Recent kernel problem with VT? (system freezes) (KVM, VirtualBox)

My system freezes when I try to use KVM (or VirtualBox with Intel VT enabled)
It also crashes on with Fedora 11 beta, so maybe this is 2.6.29-related.
(I can use full virtualization with OpenSUSE 11.1, Xen)
Anyone an idea? Which bugtracker should I use for something like this....
    Some specs:
    / uses ext4
    Core 2 Duo 8500
Intel VT is enabled in BIOS

I get the exact same thing
    VirtualBox with VT-X
    or modprobe kvm-intel
    Crashing my whole pc.
    Vmware runs fine.
    I havent tested anything else..
and yeah the recent kernel started the issue.

  • [Solved] Catalyst + Minecraft: system freeze.

    Hi everyone,
I bought a new graphics card: the ATI HD 7750 (7700 Series, Cape Verde) and installed catalyst-total from the [catalyst] repo, because the 3D performance with xf86-video-ati-git was incredible poor. I wasn't even able to scroll in chromium with this.
Now with proprietary fglrx everything performs buttery smooth, except I get severe troubles running 3D games.
The only one I'd miss very much is Minecraft, but also there I always encounter a system freeze after 5 seconds. Only S-Abf + B can help me get out of there, I cannot switch to tty1-6 to fix this issue.

EDIT: By the way, I tried lots of things from the wiki. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst.
But there was one point I could't figure out how to implement:
The radeonfb framebuffer drivers have been known in the past to cause problems of this nature. If your kernel has radeonfb support compiled in, you may want to try a different kernel and see if this helps.
    How can I disable radeonfb?
EDIT2: Well, almost 2 years later the open source driver is good enough to handle Minecraft and others very easily. Closed.

I read the open source drivers for the Southern Island Cards have been improved, but aren't ready for 3d accelerated use yet.
    http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.vide … evel/45138
Therefore users of the 7700 series have to stick to catalyst and I still have no idea what the cause of the freeze is. Can anyone help?

  • Solved\ Random lockups/system freezes AMD 6850 crossfire mode

    Hello all,
I have come to these forums because i have a problem for 4 months now and i cant seem to figure out.
    First my systemspecs:
Asrock X79 extreme 4 slot 2011 (Bios version 2.0 (latest))
    Intel i7 3820
    16 Gig Geil 1600 DDR 3 memory (4 dimms)
2 x MSI R6850 Cyclone Power Edition/OC (crossfire mode with bridge)
    1 x OCZ agility 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD 120GB (System drive)
    2 x Samsung HDD 500GB 7200rpm
    TG600-BZ 600 Watt maxx 24 amps
    Running Windows 7 64bit
    Catalyst 12.6
    12.7 CAP1
    So my problem:
When i have 2 cards inserted in crossfire mode my system goes true random lock ups and freezes. Up to several times a day.
While heavy load and gaming i sometime hear the system hang for a few seconds (sounds hangs system freezez) and then it continues to run.. usually that happens about 5-6 times before the system hangs locks up and does not respond anymore.. (i can hear the sounds hanging) and have to do a reset.
I had a few BSOD's getting the well know ATIKMPAG.sys error but that happen only twice.
Funny thing is that it does not always does this while under heavy load but also while doing YouTube video's.. even had one while cooking dinner.. (computer not in use).
    Seems to be completely random.
So what have i done to fix the problem:
I have done a complete clean install of windows 7 only running basic drivers and hardware.. problem persists
Check system event log on any problems but since it does sudden lockups there are no logs of these hardware events.
Did a check on my power saving options in windows.. made sure all were on performance.
I have run true Catalyst 12.1 to 12.6 and all kinds of cap's.. problem persists
Checked temp, does not come above 70 degrees Celsius.  (case temp not above 30)
Made sure i run the latest BIOS version of my motherboard.
Run a 24 hours memory test with memtest86+ no errors.
Did a heavy load and MSI burn in test on the single cards separately from each other continues to run perfectly.
I have run both cards separately from each other in my system (single card mode) for 2 weeks...(both PCIE slots) system runs like a charm.. no lockups no random freezes.
So i hope anyone can help me, i have some experience troubleshooting computer problems but this one has me baffled.

This is indeed the Tagan piperock 600 watt. Problem is that i have no idea how much amp my cards are pulling from 1 rail.. are they trying to pull it all from 1 rail? or are they getting power from 2 different rails. If my crossfire setup is pulling al his power from 1 rail i still have a problem..
Also i read in the review (my german is rusty but ok, tnx xmad) that when turbo mode is enabled that all rails work as one rail.. so 80 amp is available? Is this even possibly?
My new PSU will arrive today so i will report tomorrow if it has solved the issue or not.
No, as noted in my last reply for your PSU: "48A combined total for +12V rails". Max for any individual 12V rail is 20A. If three of the rails are loaded to total of 48A then the 4th is useless. You can't just add up 20+20+20+20 & come up with 80, it doesn't work that way on PSU although Antec seems to think so.

  • Suddenly my kernel panics or system freezes after loging in

My new MBP worked fine for about a month. Then, 2 days earlier it longer shutdown times than normally. But everything was still working. Suddenly I couldn't view flashvideos in firefox although I heard the audio. Then I got beachballs when trying to look into my emails (with "Mail") and couldn't start *.mov-files with Quicktime. Then I also got beachballs when I selected files in the Finder. After a while these beachballs disappeared (but they kept coming back). At this I time I already had some kernel panics.
After repairing permissions with the harddsik utility-program I got kernel panics one after the other and now I can only startup in Safe-mode, since everytime I log myself in the system freezes or a kernel panic starts the MBP new.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
