[SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.36.1 acpi issue.
With the 2.6.36.1-1 kernel from testing there is no /proc/acpi/sleep file. It works fine with 2.6.35.8.
More info later.

Just tried with the -3 version. The problem is still there.
The /proc/acpi/ dir with 2.6.35.8-1:

The /proc/acpi/ dir with 2.6.36.1-3:

Any ideas. I hope that there will be no need for a kernel bisect...

Solved(?): small ACPI issue
Hi!
I am a newby with Arch but I am very pleased with this clean distro.
One question regarding ACPI - not necessarily specific for Arch:
I use a P4-M in a laptop (HT support, self compiled SMP vanilla Kernel 2.6.10) and ACPI. I noticed that if I _turn on_ the computer, the fan works continueously without any change in speed. If I _reboot_ then ACPI seems to notice that the CPU is cool enough and slows down/speeds up the fan according to load/heat.
So I have the feeling I always have to reboot to get ACPI fan control to work. Is there a way out? BIOS settings? "Restart" ACPI?
Thanks for any comments!
BlindOk...I have googled around a lot concerning this issue. Maybe this helps others, too (at least the german people around):
http://www.iaccarino.de/silvio/linuxnb.htm
NB: Take a look at the scripts. I find them VERY useful for my notebook. As to my very problem from above: it seems you have to turn the fans on (although they are roaring like hell) before ACPI really controls them. So you could use the script 'fan' or 'silence' (maybe you have to make some modifications) to do that after (re-)booting. Works well for me now.
Cheers,

qHow do u get help from apple support with iChat? I was able to chat with support last week to solve my problem but now the same issue is back and I don't see the option to chat now?
For what it is worth I have noticed a similar issue from the iPad3 while at work and home. At work we have two Apple TV 3rd Generation installed and tied to our A/V system. I believe the issue has to do with a timeout on the broadcast saying "here I am" and allowing devices to connect.
For example:
At work we have several Wi-Fi SSID being broadcast from Cisco APs. The only one we can use with the Apple TV is the one that uses a WEP since the others are either setup to be hidden, require web page authentication, or have a login requirement from employees. Essentially, what I believe the issue is that the Apple TV periodically broadcasts a message to other iOS devices that support Mirroring. When the Apple TV does not get a response from a device it goes into a dormant mode and requires either a command from the remote control or a reboot. This has been tested with both the power management enabled and not enabled with the same results.
As for when I come home, the Apple TV3 has not seen the device in some time and therefore is not broadcasting it's location information. A simple click of the circle or menu keys on the remote will give it the command to start broadcasting again and allow the iPad3 to see the Apple TV. When trying to Home Share the computer can not play (iTunes 11, Win8RTM) until the Apple TV is awoken then it will show up for mirroing.
This may or may not assist you but, it hopefully explains how the issue may be happening. -
[SOLVED] systemd 207, lvm2 and luks booting issue
Hi
i'm using an encrypted lvm (luks) on my notebook.
/boot on /dev/sda1
lvm on /dev/sda2
main-root
main-home
main-swap
since the systemd 207 upgrade i am unable to boot my system.
this error appears at startup:
A start job is running for dev-mapper-main\x2droot.device
so i'm guessing that systemd is unable to use the encrypted lvm2, since this error is aknowledged on the
after checking some threads i tried:
mkinitcpio -p linux
but there was no effect.
HOOKS="base systemd autodetect block keymap encrypt lvm2 filesystems fsck vbox
some people tried suggesting downgrading to systemd 204 but i dont have any pkg file and building with abs leads to the following error
while makepkg -s:
==> Starting prepare()...
patching file src/core/swap.c
Hunk #1 FAILED at 220.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file src/core/swap.c.rej
==> ERROR: A failure occured in prepare().
Aborting...
am i supposed to remove the patches from the build? i'm not really sure and more of a beginner in this area.
Can anyone help me solve either the build or the boot issue ?
i should mention that i am only able to access my system by using chroot from an arch boot stick.
Thank you so much.
Kind Regards

systemd: This will install a basic systemd setup in your initramfs, and is meant to replace the 'base', 'usr', 'udev' and 'timestamp' hooks. Other hooks (like encryption) would need to be ported, and may not work as intended. As of systemd 207, this hook does not work as intended when combined with lvm2 and may break your boot. You also may wish to still include the 'base' hook (before this hook) to ensure that a rescue shell exists on your initramfs.
Have you tried keeping udev instead of replacing it with systemd hook?
Have you tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … ck_Machine ? It has systemd 204.

[Solved]Dell XPS13 ultrabook Xorg and Wifi issues after Kernel upgrade
I installed Arch on a Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook today, and most everything ran fine after I ran the initial upgrade -- but I held back on the kernel update from 3.1.3 to 3.3.7.
I just now updated the kernel, and now I can't start X, nor can I access the wireless card. For X, I get a "Fatal server error: no screens found" error, and I can no longer find wlan0 with iwconfig, although I can still see it with lspci.
I even tried downgrading the kernel to 3.1.9, but I'm still having identical issues.
What can I do to fix this, short of starting again from scratch?
Last edited by hksmoothie (2012-05-30 17:57:56)Edit: Solved by copying all the files in the boot folder on my root partition (sda3) to my real boot partition (sda1).

[1 solved, 1 remains] ASUS ACPI issues
Hello.
I've got an ASUS W2Pc laptop.
My ACPI has been behaving weirdly since the very first kernel upgrade (2.6.25 >>> 2.6.31), which was a long time ago, but these issues did not bother me until now.
The first is ASUS laptop ACPI extensions, which can not be detected. Tried reloading asus_acpi:
# modprobe -r asus_acpi
# modprobe asus_acpi
got:
FATAL: Error inserting asus_acpi (/lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/asus_acpi.ko): No such device
which means that /proc/acpi/asus does not exist.
The other occurs when I try to suspend the laptop for the second time.
No matter how the machine is suspended (with or without X, to RAM or to HDD, etc).
First suspend/resume cycle works flawlessly.
But when the next suspend is attempted, the screen just turns blank and the laptop continues working (seemingly; it does not react on anything except Reset button).
Every answer is appreciated, i'm fed up with rebooting

Modularisation of kernel 2.6.20.7 (acpi)
Hello everyone,
I am very much surprised about the change in the recent kernel.
Requiring each and every user to load such important modules such as acpi by hand seems awkward to me! I know that Arch Linux is a distribution aimed at experienced users, but still I don't like this step. What modules might come next? How many people actually had this problem?
I am sure there must be an easier way to solve the problem for those people who have actually experienced troubles with the former setup, e.g. passing some kernel option in the bootloader to not load these modules.
Please try to explain this change to me and, even more, consider to change it back!
BTW, I did not find an existing thread about this, I hope this is correct.
Best regards,
Niklas.they aren't needed that early in boot. do you check your battery percentages at initcpio time?
Sure, i don't think that me or anyone else will check this at boot time. I suggest this because of 2 reasons:
1. On the mailing list one person wrote that he got problems with his fan instead that he loads the modul from the rc.conf. So why not loading it at the earliest moment.
2. Other distros what i know (opensuse and debian) load such modules not with boot scripts because they append them to the kernel image. So if i suggest to put thermal and fan in the kernel image than i must suggest to put a module as at example battery there too. I think a mix of having some in the kernel image and some in the rc.conf won't be understandable.-)
It is only a suggestion what i have written and not a MUST HAVE thing.
the advantage is a big one, as particular modules cause issues for some users. So now, some people can boot their systems
That is the most positive case from this action because i have a jmicron controller and so i know who bad it is as the pc won't boot.-) -
[SOLVED] Kernel panic - unable to mount root fs
I'm having some trouble with my Toshiba NB255 netbook. It no longer boots after I performed a major pacman upgrade. It hangs with this error message:
http://imgur.com/Cxj1z
I did some research and found a couple of threads with problems similar to mine:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=98771
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=98496
From what I could tell, both had something to do with the initrd, but I'm not sure what to do in my specific situation. Additionally, according to my pacman.log the initrd was updated successfully during the upgrade. I did, however, also recently install some stuff to try to get my iPhone to tether to the netbook over USB (

You may try to add or remove some hooks as this mysteriously helped some folks.
Good luck.
Well, chrooting and regenerating the initial ramdisk has fixed it! Thanks for the help!!
Edit: and just FYI, I didn't change any hooks in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf when I re-generated. But yeah, if someone else has this issue, try playing with them.

[SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.32, PS/2 mouse no longer working
With the latest 2.6.32 kernel my generic PS/2 mouse doesn't work anymore. Downgrading to 2.6.31.x fixes the issue.
Last edited by Taylor001 (2009-12-29 14:18:27)I was bitten by the very same problem when I upgraded to kernel 2.6.32.2 yesterday: my mouse pretended to be dead! After much trial-and-error I was able to solve the problem by adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf:
options psmouse proto=imps
The "kernel-parameters.txt" file from the kernel documentation tells you about all possible values. After that I had to cold boot my system (that means I had to power it off, wait for fifteen seconds and then power it on again) to reset the mouse properly, but since then it's working correctly again. Maybe that will help you too. -
Hi all. I had been getting plagued by kernel panics with my relatively new Macbook Air (which I otherwise have had no issues with) when I did the following in sequence:
While connected to a power supply, lock screen
Close the lid
Disconnect power supply
Open the lid
For me, this seemed to have been caused by the Automatically adjust brightness option. To access it, go to System Preferences > Displays > Automatically adjust brightness, and uncheck the box. I also unchecked similar options that dim the screen before sleep in Energy Saver. This seems to have fixed it. I'm including the full kernel panic report -- if you're having problems with kernel panics, give it a try. I'm going to see for the next few days if this solves the issue. My guess is that this option and the display driver for this computer are really not playing well together in this version of Lion. I tried various other things:
Disabling bluetooth
Using pmset to set the hibernatemode to 0 as well as 25
Restting SMC
and none of them fixed it. This did, though, or at least it seems that way -- I am going to check for the next few days and see how it does. I am not running any third party kexts, though I do have a few third party launch agents for daemons, servers and such which have been installed via Homebrew. Feel free to comment. I am definitely a little underwhelmed by this kind of behavior coming from what is a several thousand dollar piece investment that is the most important piece of equipment for me to do my work on any given day, but if I can bypass it for now without too much of a loss in functionality, so be it.

[SOLVED] Kernel bug fix, works for me!
Having been hit by the kernel bug that interferes with internet access & having to downgrade the kernel to escape the bug. I am happy to say that after reading a bug report on the subject here:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11721
Courtesy of a link posted by Misfit138, I found deep down in the report dialogue that the following command as root, worked for the poster of the bug:
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
So I did a yaourt -Syu & found amongst other packages a minor kernel update, which did not solve my internet problems, but after su, & then entering the above command in the Terminal my internet works as it should!
If this solution works for you, then add the following to your /etc/sysctl.conf:
#Temporary workaround for tcp issue with 2.6.27
net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 0
Thanks again Misfit138
I hope this solution works for all of the other bug bitten members of the Arch (& Linux) community!

[Solved] Startx won't work! Laptop issues.
Okay, here is what Ididin as much detail as possible.
Dual boot: Windws XP + Archlinux
the partition is like this
80 GB XP
80 GB arch
*10 GB root
*70 GB /home
Video Card: nVidia Geforce Go 6100
Okay, so after I installed, I decided to and uncomment all available US repositories with HTTP on them, not FTP. Then I did a full system update, and got the latest nvidia drivers. So I run nvidia-xconfig, got a little confused when it didn't work and I noticed /etc/X11/xorg.conf was missing. After a while I realized I forgot to download Xorg, once I ran the command it worked. I downloaded HAL, started it and it worked. Then I ran startx, and it wouldn't work. I went into the IRC channel, and tried showed all the errors I got, after a while I was told I shouldn't be using root under any circumstances and the first thing I should have done is create my user ID, which I did, then made myself a Sudoer. Obviously, the errors still appeared, no matter what I did with Xorg. -.-

Nope I didn't install freetype.
Also, I noticed whenever I try to install nvidia I get an error that says these files already exist, and that there is a: Errors occured. No packages were upgraded. In a list of a bunch of files I can't even really list out at the moment.
Pacman -S nvidia gets me that error, when I tried reinstalling xorg, it worked fine. Even when I deleted the cache, and uninstalled files it had the same issue.
I was told to install the latest version available though (again). since I installed some version I got back in 2008 in December. But I've been too hesitant since I felt I might need one of those extra CDs later. So I figured out how to do it through USB, not sure if I should just yet though.
And sorry, didn't notice that long error the last time I thought it meant it was already installed.
But I did do a full system update at least though.

since the last kernel update, my ArchLinux won't boot anymore, as it seems to be unable to find the root partition "/dev/sda5". The exact output is:
:: Loading root filesystem module...
Attempting to create root device '/dev/sda5'
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda5'
unknown
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
Waiting for devices to settle...done.
Root device '/dev/sda5' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda5'
ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device '/dev/sda5'
Dropping to a recovery shell... type 'exit' to reboot
NOTE: klibc contains no 'ls' binary, use 'echo *' instead
If the device '/dev/sda5' gets created while you are here,
try adding 'rootdelay=8' or higher to the kernel command-line
ramfs$
What I have tried:
1.- I have booted with an old Ubuntu LiveCD, and /dev/sda5 seems to be working and healthy, as it mounted flawlessly while in Ubuntu.
2.- I have also found that not even /dev/sda is created from the fallback recovery shell so, obviously, there is no root device to create.
3.- None of the suggested kernel command-line parameters worked: 'rootfstype=ext3' and/or 'rootdelay=8'(I mean, using them separately or both in the same kernel GRUB line) didn't give any positive result, or any behavior change.
And now, two questions:
1.- How can I fix this?
2.- If it's not possible, how can I downgrade the kernel from a LiveCD? I suppose this is possible by booting an ArchLinux LiveCD, chrooting my '/dev/sda5' finding a 2.26.X kernel pacman package and installing, but I'm almost iliterate in kernel issues, and some help would be nice.
Thank you all in advance!
EDIT: Oh, I have also waited for some time to see if the hard disk gets ready after the failed booting proccess but it seems it doesn't, so 'rootdelay=8' wouldn't help anyway, just to give some more details about the problem.

Of course I can, it's quite easy.
First of all, you have to boot from an Archlinux install CD, to have an usable environment. Once you have booted, I will assume a couple of things to make the examples, which are:
"/dev/sda2" is the root partition where the system is currently installed but not booting.
"/dev/sda1" is the boot partition (not needed if you don't have a separated boot partition, obviously).
"/mnt/myarch" is the directory where sda1 will be mounted on the live session.
The kernel version on sda2 is "2.6.27-ARCH", you can find which kernel versions are installed on sda2 by checking the directory names under "/lib/modules/"
Next you have to mount your root partition on any directory and mount the "boot" partition if you have one too:
mkdir /mnt/myarch #Creates the mount directory on the live session, you can use /mnt/ so this command is not neccesary
mount -t auto /dev/sda2 /mnt/myarch #Mount the root partition on the live session
mount -t auto /dev/sda1 /mnt/myarch/boot #Mount the boot partition, if you have to
Now, you'll have to bind three system directories to their true locations on the root partition:
mount -t proc proc /mnt/myarch/proc
mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/myarch/sys
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/myarch/dev
Next step is to use the command "chroot <target> <consolebin>" to "move" the system root to the <target> directory, using the <consolebin> command interpreter:
chroot /mnt/myarch/ /bin/bash
Now, you will be using your system just like if you had actually booted from your hard disk, but running the kernel from the liveCD, so the only remaining step is to generate the initcpio image.
In the example for this step, I will run the mkinitcpio twice, the first one to check that it's correctly generated, and the second to install it, using the parameter "-g". Another thing to keep in mind is that even before chrooting, the liveCD kernel is still running, so you will have tu use the "-k <kernelversion>" parameter to manually specify the kernel to use. Otherwise, mkinitcpio won't be able to find the correct modules to use:
mkinitcpio -k 2.6.27-ARCH #This will simulate the generation, if it runs fine, run the next command
mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img -k 2.6.27-ARCH #This will actually generate the image
And that's all, this should regenerate a default image. More info about mkinitcpio: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio
Hope this heps
PS: Sweden, nice country .
I follow this guide and I saved my Arch installation. I don't know why the HOOKS array in my mkinitcpio.conf just contains "base" :-?
So, just before regenerate the ramdisk image I edit my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and add all the neccessary hooks and generate. I can bring my Arch box back to life -
SOLVED: kernel loads, but doesn't have a root file system
Hi,
The system is an Asus X202E. It does UEFI and has a GPT partition system. I've gotten through that part. And it is clear to me that the kernel loads.
It's the next step that's giving me grief. I've tried this with two bootloaders: gummiboot and rEFInd.
With gummiboot, the kernel panics because it can't mount the root file system. With rEFInd, it gets to the intial ramdisk and then drops me to a shell, apparently because the root file system is set to null, and it obviously can't mount that as "real root".
Here is what I posted on the Arch mailing list, documenting that I have indeed specified the correct root (I'm copying this from the email, eliding the unfortunate line wraps):
bridge-live# cat /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf
Title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrc /initramfs-linux.img
options root=PARTUUID=d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
bridge-live# ls -l /dev/disk/by-partuuid

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 f64f82a7-8f2b-4748-88b1-7b0c61e71c70 -> ../../sda5
The root partition is supposed to be /dev/sda8, that is:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Apr 15 19:26 d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782 -> ../../sda8
So the correct PARTUUID followed by the one I have specified in
arch.conf is:
d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
d5bb2ad1-9e7d-4c75-b9b6-04865dd77782
I'm guessing that this is really the same problem with both gummiboot and with rEFInd, but don't really know. It's clear to me that the initrd is not being correctly constructed. So I removed /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and did, as per the Arch wiki,
pacman -Syyu mkinitcpio linux udev
No joy.
I don't even know which way to go at this point. If I even knew how to tell it where the real disk is in the initial ram disk shell, that would help. Better of course, would be actually solving the problem.
Thanks!
Last edited by n4rky (2013-04-17 21:41:36)I have made extremely limited progress on this issue.
My previous attempt to specify the root partition in mkinitcpio.conf was insufficient. Furthermore, this is no place--despite the documentation--for the orthodoxy about using UUIDs rather than the straight /dev/sdx. In my case:
root=/dev/sda8
and run
mkinitcpio -p linux
It still drops me into the shell at boot. I can do
mount /dev/sda8 /new_root/
and exit the shell. It still won't believe it has the root device and drops me back in. I just exit.
At this point, for a very brief moment, things look promising. It appears to be starting normally. Then, gdm.service, NetworkManager.service, and dbus.service all fail to start. There may be others but the screen goes by too quickly. At this point, it hangs trying to initialize the pacman keyring and all I can do is CTRL-ALT-DEL.
It occurred to me that this might extend to the rEFInd configuration and so I modified it to also use /dev/sda8 rather than the UUID, but this made no difference. Trying to boot via gummiboot still yields the previously specified kernel panic. -
Hello all,
I've been finally able to set up a working configuration for making music with my computer. I have installed Jack, with PulseAudio as a Jack client to use Skype, and configured ALSA 1.0.24. I have specified working values in my /etc/security/limits.conf in order to get rt priority.
At first I let Arch using the latest version of kernel 2.6.37. With that sound system config and kernel 2.6.37, sound is just perfect for my needs.
Then I wanted to try out kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2, just to see if there were any differences. I installed it and restarted my computer into the 2.38 kernel.
Now the trouble begins: when I use Arch with kernel 2.6.38, I can hear some distorsions, more like crackling, in audio files (MP3, FLAC, even sound from Flash...). The crackling is not always audible, I mean that it's random, but it plays during like 5 seconds, then disappears, and then plays again... And this happens in any audio stream.
At first I thought that maybe Jack was having some issues. So I deactivated it, which implied I also deactivated its client, PulseAudio. And I routed everything directly to ALSA.
But I was still having that distorted, crackling sound...
So... I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced this problem. I'm suspecting the ALSA modules in kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2.
I'll try to test more with kernel-2.6.38-ck and keep you informed if I find somehting.
Thanks )

Last edited by lefteyexl (2011-04-11 09:43:14)Hey all,
First I'd like to apologize: the problem is solved and was not related either to kernel 2.6.38-ck or ALSA 1.0.24. I spent hours suspecting ALSA while I shouldn't have been so determined.
In fact, it was all about my Jack config and the way I configured it to be "system-wide". I didn't realize it af first, but the latency I set was much too high (frame/period: 512). Moreover, it seems that even when I stopped qjackctl the jackd daemon was still running, due to the "system-wide" mode.
Since I lowered the latency (frame/period: 64), I have not heard any pop or crackling while running Arch with kernel 2.6.38-ck-core2. But I still don't understand why I didn't experience that problem with generic kernel 2.6.37, even with frame/period set at 512...
Anyway, this issue is solved. It was my mistake.
Chris
