[SOLVED] Kernel 3.0 become 2.6.32.48-1-lts after update?
Hi everybody,
After I updated my laptop yesterday, I can not change the screen resolution. It is only 1024*768 while the maximum is 1336*768. Then I figure out the kernel was downgraded from 3.0 to arch 2.6.32.48-1-lts. In the /boot folder, I only find kernel26-lts.img here. I don't know why?
How can I fix it?
Thank you!

I only use the option -Syu to sync and upgrade system, everything work fine until yesterday.
If I remove the lts kernel, whether the system return to kernel 3. ?
Do
pacman -S linux
than configure Grub to match the 3.0 / 3.1 naming. See: http://www.archlinux.org/news/changes-t … filenames/

While using the phone frequently the screen becomes unresponsive, only the home button works and I need to lock and then unlock to get it to respond again.
I have an iPhone 5 64GB.
it's really annoying.
I've restarted the phone a few times but the issue persists. Thanks for the tip but the problem persists.
I restored the phone as new with iOS 8.0.2, the freeze problem appeared.
Then I restored the backup, the problem persists, but I have the impression that is a bit less frequent, I'll confirm in the following days. -
Grey screen after update (Solved)
I solved this one myself eventually, but it took several hours.
After updating one of the MacBook Pros in my office, the computer was stuck at the grey screeb (Apple Logo and spinning wheel) and would not progress.
1) First I rebooted the computer (no luck)
2) Then I booted from an install DVD and checked for errors (no errors reported)
3) Then I did a "repair permissions", which did find and repair some permissions
3a) Then I repeated the "verify disk" which again reported no errors.
4) Then I rebooted in safe mode, but it still would not progress past the grey screen.
5) Then I rebooted in verbose mode, and saw the error that LoginWindow was crashing.
6) I rebooted in Single User Mode, since I am familiar with Unix and Linux.
I looked in the /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ folder, and there were a LOT of files with loginwindow-timestamp-computername.dump where timestamp is the date/time of the crash and computername is the name of the computer.
The most recent of these reports that a library /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib is missing.
I looked on a different MacBook Pro, and behold ls -l tells me that libbz2.1.0.dylib should be a symbolic link to libbz2.1.0.5.dylib (the newer file DOES exist on the machine that will not boot)
The following steps will be "scary" for anyone not familiar with Unix / Linux command line, but they resulted in the computer booting
mount -w /
(remount the hard disk with write permissions)
cd /usr/lib
(change to the folder with the missing file pointer)
ln -s libbz2.1.0.5.dylib libbz2.1.0.dylib
(create the missing symbolic link)
reboot
(command to restart the computer)
and IT WORKED
The computer in question is now working, and reports that it is running version 10.5.8Hello,
I've had this problem twice, and each occurred after a security update.
What helped me was the following:
-Take out your powercord and your battery. Press the power button for about 5 seconds.
-Then, insert your battery and powercord, start the computer, and hold down AppleCTRL+PR.
From what I understand, one of these two steps resets the power management system on the macbook.
After you perform these two steps, your computer may still hang at the grey screen with the apple logo. However! Let it hang for about 5-10 minutes and it will automatically restart, and boot properly.
You can also try calling Apple support on your friend's behalf ... they were more than helpful.

[solved] kernel 2.6.27 - open LUKS encrypted root partition fails
Hi,
after updating to kernel 2.6.27 the passphrase for my LUKS encrypted root partition does not work anymore.
I get this error messages:
Enter LUKS passphrase:
device-mapper: table: 254:0 crypt: Error allocating crypto tfm
device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
device-mapper: ioctl: device doesn't appear to be in the dev hash table.
Command failed: No key available with this passphrase.
Enter LUKS passphrase:
With a old (2.6.25) vanilla kernel it works.
any ideas?
EDIT
Solved.
The Problem was that I had this line in my mkinitcpio.conf to get rid of the padlock-error-message at boot.
#CRYPTO_MODULES="aes_i586 aes_generic sha256_generic"
With kernel 2.6.27 there are new / more modules needed to open the LUKS encryptet root partition.
So I removed the line from mkinitcpio.conf and deletet the padlock modules in /lib/modules/2.6.27-ARCH before regenarating the initrd image.
Thanks to GerBra for the tip.

[SOLVED]Kernel 3.0 boot problems.
I recently built the 3.0 kernel (downloaded from kernel.org) and am trying to make it bootable.
After creating an image and editing grub, I get an error talking about how modules.dep was not found, that /dev/sda7 does not exist and can't be mounted to new_root, that I'm on my own and Good Luck, and then I get dropped to ram fs.
I listed the contents of the kernel26.img and kernel30.img and there is quite a difference even though they were both built using the same mkinitcpio.conf. kernel26.img was built with -p kernel26. I haven't found a preset for kernel30.
kernel26.img boots fine.
I think the .imgs need to be similar but I don't know how to make them similar. Or I could be completley wrong and on the wrong track. Any ideas?

MODULES=""
# BINARIES
# This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional

# This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
# No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.

# HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
# This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
# No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
# This setup assembles an pata raid array with an encrypted root FS.
# Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.

It's just the same as you uninstall foo-1.2.3 and install e.g. foo-1.2.4 or bar-1.0.0 if package foo gets replaced by package bar.
I know, I'd just like to be able to boot .38-ARCH and 3.0. I have problems w/ thermal and I'm trying to find the coolest kernel.
You could rebuild the original .38 arch kernel but name it differently, look at e.g. the kernel26-lts package or the lots of custom AUR kernels for references. -
[SOLVED] kernel-headers & VirtualBox. Still same problems! (
Hi guys, i'm new to this forum, but i didn't found an answer anywhere! I'm trying to install VirtualBox 4.2.10 from terminal on my x86 Oracle Linux.
Half year ago, when i tried first, i couldn't resolv the problem and still the same problem today - NO KERNEL HEADERS for ORACLE Linux in REPO! What did wrong after update? I can found headers only for RHEL original kernel, but i don't want to use 2.6.32 kernel version.
Can someone help me and describe true and complete installation VirtualBox for Oracle Linux??? Thanks ahead!

[SOLVED] Kernel 4.0 with Radeon HD problem: Purple Line
Hi All,
This is my first post on the Arch forums! and probably going to get flamed a bit too as this is not an Arch specific problem. I am just hoping you guys will be able to help point me in to the right direction. The reason I am posting here on the Arch forums as it does affect Arch Linux now the kernel package has ticked over to 4.0.
The problem, is that after updating to Kernel 4.0, there is now a vertical purple line on the left hand side of my screen as soon as X is started - when using HDMI. I believe the problem lies in the Kernel, how would I go about reporting a potential kernel bug and what kind of logs (and how) would they expect me to provide?
My hardware (Radeon HD 6570):
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Turks PRO [Radeon HD 6570/7570/8550]
It works perfectly on 3.19 but 4.0 and 4.1-rc the purple line is present. In addition to the purple line, the display is not quite as crisp - slightly blurry.
I am using open source drivers - I have tried Mesa 10.5 and 10.6 (development) makes no difference.
Have tried on both Arch Linux and Linux Mint - again distro makes no difference.
Only happens when using HDMI out, VGA is fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
RESOLUTION: Bug Report @ kernel.org https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97561
WORKAROUND:
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --set audio off
PS. I learnt a lot moving to Arch... great distro!!
Last edited by rlees85 (2015-04-30 21:11:10)I'm also having video issues since updating to kernel 4.0.1. A lot of video tearing and "glitching". I have a Radeon card as well:
$ lspci | grep Radeon
05:00.0 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XTX [Radeon HD 8890M / R9 M275X] (rev ff)
I'm going to try and downgrade my kernel to confirm if that's the cause. There weren't many other packages that upgraded, though...
**EDIT** The kernel is definitely the issue, or at least something conflicting with the kernel. I'm having bad luck. This is the second package upgrade in a week to make my system screwy (wpa_supplicant being the first).
Unfortunately, I'm not real sure myself on how to go about filing an effective bug report. Once more info on that is forthcoming, I'll re-upgrade my kernel and provide any relevant logs, etc. Or file a separate report if the issues aren't closely related. Thanks!

[SOLVED] Kernels from the AUR not compiling properly
Hiya everyone,
I've got a bit of a problem, I think. Early this evening I tried downloading and making the Linux-lqx kernel from the AUR. Largely because why not.
After the tarball downloaded, I ran tar -xvf on it like I always do, ran namcap on the PKGBUILD (it came up with a few superfluous errors), and ran makepkg -s on the PKGBUILD. It downloaded the relevant source, then immediately failed the PGP signature check. I was like, "Oh you AUR!" and ran makepkg -s --skippgpcheck. It did it's thing until it was applying patches, at which point it just failed at a certain point with "ERROR: A failure occured in prepare()", and aborted. I reported the error and the lines that preceded it in the package's page in the AUR.
I got suspicious, and tried the Linux-lbre-xen kernel to test the building of it. Same issue: a prepare() error. Baffled, I thought maybe my building system was broken. I recompiled a few packages I had already built and installed successfully, and they were fine. I grabbed a few more tarballs from the AUR: adobe-air, I think jre, and something else. They all compiled great and installed just fine. Confused, I then tried building Linux-ck. Another prepare() error!
Then I noticed the line that preceded the error, "patching file virt/kvm/kvm_main.c", then the error. Going back to lqx and libre-xen, I tried compiling them again, and sure enough "patching file virt/kvm/kvm_main.c" directly preceded the prepare() error.
What's going on here? Strangely, every kernel I try from the AUR fails the PGP signature check, too. Just the kernels - everything else works as expected. Am I missing something?

Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:
How to use Activity Monitor - Apple Support
If the entire system hangs or locks up (for example, if the system clock freezes and stops counting up), you may also be experiencing some variety of Kernel Panic. If that is the case, you may also find this article useful:

[SOLVED] Problem w/ lxdream after updating/reinstalling OS.
Hi,
Yesterday I've made update on OS and then I've got Kernel panic... So I've recovered data and reinstalled OS (it was the best option for me, because previous system was such a mess). After installing OS I've compiled by myself lxdream and after copying 'bios data' to ~/.lxdream it gaves me "Illegal instruction" ("Bledna instrukcja" in polish). So, I've tried compiling from the AUR and I've got this same result. Before update/reinstall everything was working ok. This is from 'gdb lxdream' and typing 'run':
Starting program: /(path_to)/lxdream
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread 0xb3357b70 (LWP 1745)]
ALSA lib pcm.c:7236:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occured
Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.
0x0809547f in gl_reset_state () at drivers/video_gl.c:36
36 glOrtho( 0, video_width, video_height, 0, 0, 65535 );
(gdb) _
My system spec:
AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.6GHZ)
512MB RAM in one DDR module (Kingston)
80GB HDD PATA (Segate)
Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 AGP (w/ using nvidia-96xx)
Creative SB16 listed by lspci as Ensoniq 5880B
I'm using xorg-server 1.7.5.902-1 and nvidia-96xx/nvidia-96xx-utils.
It's not bug in alsa, because on previous install I've got alsa underrun occured and everything was working ok. Also it have other optional audio drivers (alsa, esd, sdl, null). Even on 'null' it's not working.
I don't know what a problem is with lxdream, because previously it was working ok with the same drivers and 3rd party applications/libraries.
It looks that some package after update have broken compatibility. I need this emu, because it's needed for me for Homebrew Development.
I'll test lxdream on second PC with similiar specs, that have ArchLinux slightly outdated.
It's my first post and sorry for my English, I'm Polish.
Thanks a lot.
// it works okay on second (not mine) pc, it has xorg-server 1.7.5.901 and open source ati radeon drivers (called 'radeon'), I don't know if that helps, if I would know how to debug it...
Update:
It looks that it's ia gtk or gl/glx bug, because when I comment this line 'glOrtho( 0, video_width, video_height, 0, 0, 65535 );' it runs, but when I get cursor over GL display it will crash with:
Program received signal SIGILL, Illegal instruction.
on_video_window_mouse_motion (widget=0xadff940, event=0xae03c18,
user_data=0xae94600) at gtkui/gtk_win.c:133
133 int x = (int)event->x;
So it's looks that it is a GL/GLX or GTK bug. On that PC gtk version is 2.18.7, mine is 2.20.0.
Update:
I think, that it is a GTK 2.20.0 related problem...
Update:
Marked with 'SOLVED' flag in the subject.

[SOLVED] charging + touchpad problem after update
*******EDIT*******
after trying some other live cds, the problems below are almost certainly hardware related, with timing of update coincidental.
hi all,
I have a Asus UX32VD. I was travelling for a few weeks and updated when I got home, including the kernel to 3.10.44
now the battery stops charging around 50% (tried two chargers at two different locations)
$ acpi -i
Battery 0: Charging, 48%, charging at zero rate - will never fully charge.
Battery 0: design capacity 5863 mAh, last full capacity 4920 mAh = 83%
also the touchpad stopped working entirely (was not recognized in 'xinput list') but after some searching I blacklisted i2c-hid, which seems to have helped, but the touchpad still sometimes becomes unresponsive (especially when unplugging/plugging in power) and leaves the following in the journal:

I'm also having some other smaller issues that I'll work on before asking about. I tried rolling back the kernel back to before the update but it didn't change the charging behaviour or help with the touchpad. I'm going to try rolling everything serious-looking back but wanted to post first in case anyone has any ideas.
thanks for the help, and please let me know anything else required.
