[SOLVED(kind of)] Typing 'install' anywhere in Arch turns Caps Lock on

This is a strange one.  Anytime I type the word install, whether X apps or apps running outside of X, Caps Lock is turned on, including the light on my keyboard.  My keyboard is 'Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v1'.  The text I see, either in bash or an app running on X, is 'instALL' when this happens.
This does not happen on Windows, nor has it done this in other distros (PCLinuxOS).  The keyboard is relatively new, does not appear to have any stuck keys, doesn't exhibit any other strange behavior, etc.  Am I out of my mind or is this some obscure thing that is only mentioned in dark corners or back-alleys?

b4data wrote:That certainly seems odd. Are you able to modify the behaviour using xmodmap?
Yes, I tried changing the Caps Lock to Delete, just for the fun of it, and instead of 'instALL' I would get 'instll'.
b4data wrote:
When you say
apps running outside of X
you do mean in a tty, yes? In any event, what DE/WM/DM are you using? Have you anything in your .xinitrc, .bash_profile, rc.local et cetera that you may have set up for modifying your previous (presumably correctly working) keyboard?
Yes, the behavior is in a tty as well as any X program.  I am using a custom setup with fluxbox, lxpanel and pcmanfm.  I have not made any changes to my .xinitrc, .bash_profile, rc.local that would cause this.  I do use numlockx for turning on the NumLock, but that's it.

  • Why does my MacBook start typing in upper case even though Caps lock is off?

On occasions, when typing, my MacBook starts to type in upper case even though the Caps lock is off? This is not a physical sticking of the shift key as it happens even when using a USB keyboard? I have to use the shift key kind of in reverse to revert to lowercase entry.
I have checked settings and I cannot find anything that could be causing it.

  • Installing and running Arch linux on the new MacBook 2015

So Apple has just started taking orders for the new 2015 MacBook. You know --
the thinnest and lightest MacBook to date (even thinner than the MacBook Air),
with a 12 inch retina display, the Intel Core M processor, a single USB-C port,
and the new force touch trackpad.
I'm pretty sure there are a few people like me who'd like to buy this new
MacBook and then install and run Arch (or some other flavor of linux) on it.
But of course, this MacBook is in many ways very dissimilar to previous MacBook
Pros and MacBook Airs. So this thread is a shout out to likeminded individuals
who are willing to brave the odds and install Linux on this new machine, so we
can help each other figure out (and hopefully fix) the inevitable issues that
will arise when we venture into this uncharted territory!
I have a little bit of experience installing and running Arch on MacBook Pros
and other Apple computers, but I'm (very) far from being an expert. But based
on my limited experience, I think the following areas will pose the biggest
challenges to getting Linux properly up and running on the new MacBook:
    1. Installation: it's possible that booting a live USB will fail. So we might
have to use a CD. Indeed, perhaps we may even have to build a special ISO
image for this laptop. And once the install is complete, EFI/EFISTUB booting
with/without refit/refind may or may not work. Also, installing a bootloader
(grub, gummiboot, etc.) for dual booting Mac OS X and Linux may be a
challenge. We might have to endure kernel panics and deal with cryptic error
       messages while booting.
    2. Wifi may or may not work reliably. We might have to do some tinkering with
       different drivers, etc.
    3. Battery life may not be very good. We might have to fix a few things here.
    4. The HiDPI retina display may or may not work properly with specific window
managers/desktop environments. Fonts/icons might be too tiny, may not scale,
       etc.
    5. The new Force touch trackpad may not work out of the box. In fact, I'm
fairly sure the regular xf86-input-synaptics package won't play nice with
this trackpad. There may not be support for features like the trackpad's
haptic feedback, multi-finger gestures, pressure sensitivity, etc. Indeed,
this might actually take a while to get properly working under Linux.
    6. I don't know if the new USB-C port will work out of the box. It may not
play nice with USB flash drives and other peripherals and there may be
       issues with ehci/uhci/whatever.
I tried Googling around trying to learn as much as I could about the issues
above, but since the laptop is going on sale only today and most users are
probably not interested in running Linux on it, I came up quite empty. I think
many others on this forum might also have faced the same issue.
So here's an open invitation. Let's share our experiences trying to get linux
working on this laptop. If you buy this laptop and try to install Arch on
it, please let us know how it went! Even if some things work out of the box, it
might be useful for others to know, so please share.
And of course, if you have more information/gotchas: for example, if you
encountered and managed to fix one or more of the issues above, or you
encountered a problem that's not on the list above, or even if you tried
something and it didn't work out as expected, please post below. I'm sure this
will be a very big help to others trying to solve similar issues on the same
    hardware. Thanks!

It would probably be beneficial to post the output of lsusb -vvvv and dmesg.

    2. Broadcom BCM4360 AirPort Extreme, not supported.
    5. The new Force touch trackpad and keyboard, both SPI bus devices, do not work.
On 2, it may just be a case of needing firmware, my laptop has a BCM43602 card, and the firmware required has only just been added to the linux-firmware package.  Prior to that I had to install it manually.
On 5, I'm wondering if you identified them as SPI devices by looking in OS X, I ask because my laptop categorises my keyboard and trackpad in the same way.  But they are actually still both connected to the USB bus, and presumably using SPI as an interconnect between the keyboard/trackpad and the microcontroller that tie them together.

Well then maybe you could take a screenshot because the appearance of such a window is news to me.
Also post your OS X version and what model Mac you have. The more detail, the better. Thanks.
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse or trackpad. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

  • USB Errors while trying to install 64 bit Arch

I'm trying to install Arch onto some brand new hardware. I am installing using the Arch Netboot environment.
When I try to install 64 bit Arch, I get the following errors straight after archiso.img is downloaded and the kernel is booted:
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
    usb 2-5: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 4, error -32
usb 2-5: device not accepting address 5, error -32
hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5
The same lines appear for usb 4-1, 6-5 and 7-1. The only USB device that is plugged in is the USB key that I booted ipxe.lkrn from.
Googling seems to point to a kernel module that needs to be loaded earlier or a faulty USB controller. I do not know how to change what kernel modules are used during installation, and I'm fairly certain the USB controllers are fine. Its a brand new motherboard and I can access my USB key fine (I can boot from it) in any of the available USB ports.
I was close to giving up until for some reason I decided to try and install the 32 bit version of Arch instead. This worked as expected and I am sent to the archiso installation prompt without seeing any of the same USB errors.
Can someone please assist me with this? I would really prefer to have the 64 bit version installed.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=158206
This seems to be related, although my errors are giving error -32 instead of -110.
Is there a way I can force the installation environment to use kernel 3.7.6? Does the 32 bit installer use a different kernel to the 64 bit installer?
Is there a way I can use the 32 bit installation environment to install 64 bit as well as the 3.7.6 kernel?

Hi ,  I see you have been troubleshooting an issue with your new LaserJet Pro MFP M127, and I may have found some items you can check.
This issue is usually caused by some sort of packing materials that may be hiding on you. I would double check Setting Up the Printer Hardware for HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw to make sure it's not a piece of cardboard inside the printer. The next thing that may cause this would be if you forgot to remove the orange tabs on the toner cartridge. If you take a look at Replacing the Toner Cartridge, it shows what needs to be removed from the toner before installing it inside the printer. There is a whole setup video about Unboxing and Setup of the LaserJet Pro MFP M127 you can watch as well. If the issue persists, you might still have options covered under the HP LaserJet Print Cartridges and Imaging Drums Limited Warranty Statement - I would still try to Contact HP Support to see if there is anything they can do. Fill in the model number and the form to receive a case number for expedited assistance.  Please let me know if these steps resolved your issue, or if there is anything else I can do to help.  I look forward to hearing from you!  Thanks,

Since I've installed Mountain Lion, I am having lock up issues with multiple programs. MS Outlook has crashed and I've lost all my folders. HELP?

okay I've finally been able to get tor and all the other programs to work according to my plan the only thing that's still making problems is that iptables doesn't work as I want it to, when I start chromium without proxy settings privoxy doesn't seem to forward the information to polipo.. do I need to add another rule to iptables.rules in order for the program to know it has to reroute the information again or how can I get this to work? and is there any way to run rtorrent with proxy support?
anyway, problem 2 and 3 are still to be solved.
and does anybody know where i can get a good dansguardian blacklist that was not designed for 6 year old children and for which I don't need to subscribe? I'm still getting these partypoker popups -.-
//e: with iptables it's the same thing as described in the first post. https works, http doesnt. I get the output "Invalid header received from client." on http sites. still no idea why though.. (and the https-version of torcheck.xenubite says i'm tor unprotected while starting the browser with iptables)

  • I just installed RAM into my 2007 Mid iMac. I went to turn it on and the fan goes on and such. The screen isn't lighting up and (Caps lock) the keyboard isn't working. It's plugged in too.

Installed two 2GB RAM cards to my Mac. Plugged it in, turned it on. You can hear it running. My keyboard isn't lighting up (Caps Lock) and the screen is black.

Assuming the RAM is to the exact spec required, try re-seating the RAM. When you think it is fully seated give it an extra shove with both thumbs - it only needs to be a fraction out for it not to work. If that fails to solve the problem, put the old RAM back in and test. If it works that narrows it down to the new RAM being the problem.

    Several protocols may be used.
Here I describe two of them.
    (1) the one which I use : install and use the "Convert to Lowercase" service available in the free WordService
    (2) copy your text, paste in TextEdit and enter the Edit menu.

I just got Arch installed on my CR48. The CR48 doesn't have a super key so I was trying to remap the "Caps Lock" key. I've discovered in this post that the "Caps Lock" key is actually "xk_superl". However, the following commands don't work.
    xmodmap -e "keysym xk_superl = Super_L Super_R

Both of these commands result in an error:

    Hello everybody!
I can't get rid of the Lenovo icon of num/scroll/caps lock whic appears when you press one of these keys. The problem shows up when I join to my other bigger monitor so the screen resolution gets bigger and the icon gets stucked in the bottom-right corner where was originally the end of previous smaller resolution (as you can see here on the screenshot):
I'm desperate because I've already tried most of the tips which I could find on google. Like modifying the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Widcomm\BTConfig\General\KeyIndication, disabling BTTray.exe etc.
I have Lenovo Ideapad B560. I would rly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!
Edit: Problem solved. It wasn't any Lenovo utility but Genius Keyboard. So I have just unistalled the ioCenter software and icon finally disappeared.

  • [Solved] xmodmap bug? Remapping Caps Lock doesn't work

When I program I like to swap these keys:
    Esc <-> Tab
    Ctrl <-> Caps Lock
    In ~/.xmodmap, I have specified these re-mappings:
    keycode 66 = Control_L
    keycode 37 = Caps_Lock
    keycode 23 = Escape
    keycode 9 = Tab
The Escape and Tab keys swaps, no problem, but instead of Caps_Lock and Control_L swapping, both those keys becomes Caps_Lock.
Whatever I try to do, the Control keys doesn't get assigned to Caps_Lock(keycode 66). If I leave the keycode 66 = , the key is un-assigned, but when I assign Control_L or Control_R, it just doesn't work. But, if I assign some other key, for example, keycode 66 = Tab, it gets assigned, no problem.
Its like xmodmap just doesn't want Caps Lock and Control keys to be swapped. Really frustrating. Any help/pointers would be really helpful.

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud.  I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze.  One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them.  To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked.  And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again.  My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable.  It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC.  If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
    Cheers,
    Bob
