[solved] laggy crappy kde gui

Hey guys,
just did a clean install of my laptop today. I installed kde (not kdemod). Now there is a really strange behaviour of the GUI:
It seems that it doesn't refresh properly, hard to discribe. I even recognize a lag with text input or in submenues.
I installed chromium and there the problem shows even on websites: randomly it shows an empty website (which shouldn't be empty though) and when I start to hover around with the pointer the scratched item show. Same in diverse submenus in the kde config.
Note: I have compiz installed and in ccsm its the same. Tried it also with/without compiz, enabled/disabled compositing.
Extremely strange to me: neither native kde apps (e.g. konsole), websites or gtk apps (e.g. openoffice) run properly. All the same strange behaviour.

Ok, seems solved now. Intel Owners shouldt start it with
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 INTEL_BATCH=1 compiz --replace --indirect-rendering --sm-disable ccp &

    Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion Cyber_Defend_Team provided?
If the issue persists, start the computer in Safe mode to check the result:
If it doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes. If a recently installed program, device, or driver prevents Windows from running correctly, you can start your computer
in safe mode and then remove the program that's causing the problem.
If it still in the safe mode, we may need to repair the installation with the recovery media.
In addition, please logon the problematic computer with the domain user account which works fine in other computer to test to see if it's the user account issue.

  • [Solved] Rotation in KDE

I'm running into a bit of a problem with Rotation option and KDE. I set Rotation to CW in xorg.conf. When I restart the xserver, the screen is appropriately rotated. After I login, during the initial KDE boot sequence the screen stays rotated and at the right resolution, but right after it switches to still rotated position, but to the resoltuion of 1024x768 (which makes it too short vertically, and extend past the screen horizontally (with monitor rotated)). Basically, it seems that KDE is trying to override xorg's settings at some point. Does anyone have any idea where it happens, and how I can fix it?
    Thanks.

Duh. Figured it out, right after submitting the post. I had krandrtray running which as soon as initialized was overriding xorg's settings. Problem solved, sorry about the redundancy (maybe it helps somebody in the future).

python-numpy was installed via "pip install numpy" instead of "pacman -S python-numpy". Could this cause any problem?

Generally it is less pain to stick to pacman only.  Using anything else would mean pacman cannot know what packages certain files belong to, similar to what you ran into here.
Got it. Seems I have to reinstall my python packages from scratches again.
    Thanks to all the help.
    SOLVED.

  • [solved] Laggy Video

I don't understand why video is lagging again. It went away when I installed intel-dri a month or so ago. But after a full system upgrade it's all laggy again. According to pacman intel-dri & xf86-video-ati & ati-dri are all installed. What could the problem be? I'm on a older ibm thinkpad, it's not built for heavy duty graphics but low quality youtube videos should not be lagging either.
Last edited by adamlogan (2010-10-28 02:45:39)

Well in the past the Thinkpad has played 720p films fine in VLC. I usually do 320p for youtube just cuz bandwidth does not exceed 64kb/s here and I don't see that much of a difference. It did not lag in the past month or so, am wondering why it's lagging now all of a sudden. The gfx card is Radeon Mobility M7 LW AKA Radeon Mobility 7500 according to lspci | grep VGA. Using openbox, X-ORG without custom configs, Vesa drivers installed (forgot to mention that before). Youtube videos are all in flash right? I have adobe flash installed. Can Mplayer really handle that format well? What about VLC? hmm. Still I don't see what's wrong. In the past when the video was laggy all I had to do was install intel-dri and all of a sudden problem was solved. It's still installed so I'm scratching my head.

  • Strange KDE gui lag

Since few weeks i have strange problem with KDE 4.7.2, witch occurs especially when i log out and log in into other account. Some gui actions have few (20-30 seconds)  lag before they take place. For example when i click KDE menu button menu is rendered after few seconds. When i click shortcut to some directory dolphin opens after few seconds.
I don't know what could be the cause of that strange behavior. Machine is quite decent  - i3, 4GB RAM, GTX460.
    here are logs:
    boot.log
    http://wklej.org/id/615554/
    errors.log
    http://wklej.org/id/615555/
    kernel.log
    http://wklej.org/id/615556/
    messages.log
    http://wklej.org/id/615558/
    xorg.log
    http://wklej.org/id/615559/
    Any ideas?
If i don't switch users, it works just fine. At least at my account.

I have been noticing a similar problem of late (over the last month or so).
The lag is especially noticeable immediately after startup.  The K menu is unresponsive unless I wait 20-30 seconds after logging in.  After that, everything seems to run normally.
I have tried out a few different things, such as disabling desktop effects and nepomuk/strigi.  None of these has helped.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them...
    Thanks!

  • [Solved] Is it KDE 4.3.3 or Xorg

My last major update upraded kde and xorg to their latest versions, but now i get random spurts of 100% cpu usage every 2-3 minutes which really slows down the system for 5-10 seconds. I tried downgrading xorg but it didnt help. I also tried Xfce, openbox and e17 and they work just fine. So i think its an issue with kde. To make things worse, this spikes happen no matter what application im running. Disabling desktop effects also didnt solve the problem. I also did a fresh kde install on another pc to check and the problem exists there as well. I cant find any errors in the logs because nothing crashes, everything just freezes for a few seconds and then works fine until the next freeze. Any ideas?Solved]
Last edited by iDIEDaLONGtimeAGO (2009-11-12 10:05:52)

I seem to have figured out the problem. (im not using gtk-qt-engine and the only gtk app i use is bleachbit.) The spikes/freezes have disappeared after i disabled cpu scaling. But this is strange because i was using the same scaling policies (conservative) before the upgrade and it worked pretty well. Also on my separate e17 install, the same governor works pretty well. I think the freeze happened whenever the cpu tried to up the freq. I have a pretty moderate cpufreq freq threshhold at 60 % cpu usage. Should i increase/decrease it ?
So i guess it isnt a problem with either of kde or xorg. SO marking solved.
Thanks for all the help guys. I'm loving my arch experience

  • [Solved] Systemd broke KDE

OK, well, looks like my problems weren't actually gone. So i recently upgraded and switched to systemd and all that. I did go through the wiki for systemd and KDE and run the commands to start kdm on boot, and after a few other minor issues I managed to get it to start up once last night, but now it won't. It's definitely attempting to launch kdm, but it immediately drops back to the command-line login. X does work -- I can run 'X -retro' just fine.
I'll put some logs here, but I don't see anything obviously wrong in any of these. If you have any other thoughts on troubleshooting this let me know.

All the x.org drivers/modules are compiled for a specific version of X. The older X driver will probably work, as long as it is not too old to be compatible at all, but you need to recompile it and it will automatically choose the 1.13 ABI of the installed x.org server as long as support for 1.13 is already in the driver.
Personally I would just recommend upgrading to xf86-video-ati-git from aur instead of downgrading.
I have the 1.13 Xorg server installed; I installed xf86-video-ati-git from the aur and X stopped loading with the following errors:

I also tried installing xorg-server-git from the aur just to be sure both were as new as possible, but that didn't make any difference.
What Cdh said, with one small note:  I love this new trend of blaming systemd for just about anything, when it's rarely it's fault.
Probably should have included this in the original post: If I remove the systemd init line before booting, KDE comes up just fine (but my wifi doesn't work anymore, which is why I'm trying to switch to systemd). If I leave systemd on, it doesn't. Seems logical to assume systemd is somehow involved.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to use GUI applications on any WM I tried except TWM

I'm using Arch Linux at my work despite it's very risky because something may go wrong pretty often (rolling distro, latest packages, DIY for newbs like me etc.). Unfortunately, this is one of those times...
I was using Xmonad. It all started w/ Chromium crashing a lot. I had a discussion about it here, but nobody found a solution. Chromium just got frozen and I could only kill it manually. Then I switched to Google Chrome and it get a little better. Today it was so bad that I couldn't do my daily work, so I switched to Opera; then Firefox... the same! After that I discovered that it happens w/ any GUI application. Good thing I'm using terminals for almost anything else I do. Anyway, I need GUI browser! So I thought that it may be something related to Xmonad itself. That's why I installed Xfce4 and... ...the same - GUI crashes. It's even worse actually because Xfce4 has a lot more GUI elements than Xmonad.
Now I'm writing from TWM and it has crashed only twice in two hours. What should I do? I really have no idea what could broke the things here. I really need help, guys!
Ohh, back home I have PC w/ almost the same conf -- everything works. Driver problems?
P.S. Title says "wrong focus" because sometimes application just freezes, sometimes it loses focus and I'm unable to use it... weird stuff.
    P.S.S. Changed title.

So, as I understand it.... Haskell somehow conflicted w/ X11 when I did system upgrade.
    Quick solution was to:
    1. Remove Xmonad (xmonad, xmonad-contrib),
    2. Try to remove Haskell (ghc),
    3. Remove all needed packages that disallows to remove Haskell,
    4. Remove Haskell,
    5. Check that system still works (I tried to do things w/ TWM and system upgrade),
    6. Put on any WM (I'm now using Awesome, but you can try to reinstall Xmonad as well (just follow all logs and stuff)).
Also, this fixed problem /w browser crashing.
P.S. Maybe this is just temporary solution, but for last 30 mins everything works /w problems.

  • [SOLVED] Downgrading networkmanager KDE doesn't boot/no connection

    Hi
Since a recent Networkmanager update I cannot connect to my Samba shares anymore. Also, my xbmc and vlc remotes over android cannot connect either. I decided to downgrade networkmanager from 0.9.8 to 0.9.6 and as a result I lost my internet connection and KDE takes forever to boot and when it does half of the things doesn't seem to work.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Cpt.
[EDIT] turns out uninstalling networkmanager, deleting /etc/NetworkManager fixes the boot issue. Reinstalling networkmanager and everything is fixed. However, I cannot seem to downgrade (as /etc/NetworkManager doesn't get restored automatically), which means that for the time being I cannot remotely connect to my archbox.

    Uhh...
if it helps at all, here's a list of files that consist of /etc/NetworkManager/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
    I got it from running
    $ pacman -Ql networkmanager | grep /etc
In retrospect, that probably didn't help at all... have you tried just downloading the tar file for networkmanager and manually install /etc/NetworkManager/, or maybe removing the more networkmanager tar files from your /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ directory and then reinstalling networkmanager might help... I dunno.

  • [SOLVED PAR/LY]kde 4.2 -- akonadi configuration + kmail crash problems

    Hey guys,
Recently i decided to give kde 4.2 a try , (been using gnome for months) and after the update i have these two distinct (i think) problems with kmail.
When i run kmail  ,  it tries to start akonadi server, which fails due to configuration issues (see below) . After that , when i try to send an email it *always* crashes. Here is the output either of the shell or the popup error dialog:

    Hey toxygen,
thanks for the reply. No i am not using kdemod (actually never tried it, maybe i should try it some day) . The thing about turning akonadi off is that it is not that clear to me how to do it properly.
Looking around at System settings --> advanced --> Akonadi server configuration  , it clearly states that akonadi server is not running (due to bad configuration). I dont see anything like "switch off Akonadi server" either.
Trying System settings--> advanced --> Kresources , it tries a couple of times to start the Akonadi server (fails ofcourse) , and then i get to the Kresources dialog. But i cant see anything there related to Akonadi, or something like "do not use Akonadi".
Also  removing the package ignoring the dependencies with
    pacman -Rd akonadi
    has this result on shell
    KWallet::Wallet::openWallet: Pass a valid window to KWallet::Wallet::openWallet().
kres-migrator: error while loading shared libraries: libakonadiprotocolinternals.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    kmail(23835)/kresources: Akonadi migration failed!
    kmail(23835)/kresources: command was: ("kres-migrator", "--interactive-on-change", "--type", "contact", "--omit-client-bridge")
    kmail(23835)/kresources: exit code: 127
    kmail(23835)/kresources: stdout: ""
    kmail(23835)/kresources: stderr: ""
So the kde still looks for it(expected). Btw it doesnt seem there to be a way to remove it without the -d option at pacman , since it is required by kdepimlibs , which in turn are required by many other kde packages. So how do you go about switching it off?
Another strange thing i noticed after googling about the issue is that usually if i get it right, the akonadi configuration files should be located at ~/.config/Akonadi  , so why is it trying to do its stuff at /root/.config/akonadi in my machine ?? Am i somehow causing it to run as root?

  • [Solved] Problems in KDE after upgrade

    Hello,
After the recent upgrade in KDE, it hasn't loaded correctly. I get the login screen and then the splash screen, but the splash screen fades out quickly and neither the taskbar/kickoff bar nor my wallpaper load. I have conky and yakuake starting with kde (through the ~/.kde4/Autostart/ folder) and they partially load. They have full functionality, but transparency is not working.
I've already looked over these threads: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=932598, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=123536, and the trouble-shooting portion of the kde wiki (here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kd … leshooting). None of them completely fixed the problem.

I'm running a home-built machine with an AMD processor and an nVidia video card (nouveau driver).
I tried changing my settings in ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc to disable composting, and I've tried doing a full install as that helped several people. Neither helped. I'm hoping that someone will understand the above errors and can guide me to fixing it.
    Thanks!

I have now tried a clean user, and it works. I don't know what's causing the difference. I noticed that the new user (tester) had a `.xinitrc' file in the home directory and my original user (hanksa) did not. I copied that file over, but I still had the same problem. I'm thinking it's with KDE -- one of my settings, not the programing -- because I can still launch applications from yakuake (I have this autostarting for both users with the same launch scripts). It seems that it is just the desktop wallpaper and the kickoff panel that aren't loading.
I can't check all my settings because I don't know where KDE stores them, and I don't know how to launch KDE's graphical `Systems Settings' application from the command line. I have a lot of personalized settings, so I would rather not just overwrite everything with the new user's home directory.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
EDIT: I found how to open the `System Settings' application (http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-List … 02758.html) from the command line. For anyone interested, the command is systemsettings. I checked through my settings and nothing seemed strange or in fact different at all from my new user (tester).

  • [Solved] Cantata Qt5 & KDE SVN PKGBUILDs fail to compile (speex)

I haven't been able to compile any revisions past 5664.  All of the deps are current as of 2/13.  I just want to know if anyone has been encountering something similar. Upstream cannot make heads or tails about it as his svn checkout compiles fine on his ubuntu build machine.

Confirmed!  Removing speex (1.2rc2-1) and speexdsp (1.2rc3-1) and then downgrading to last week's speex package (1.2rc1-4) enables both Qt5 and KDE packages to compile successfully.  Thanks for checking the issue for me.  Prior reported compilation errors usually had the relevant output near the termination point.  I guess I was being lazy this time around.  smh... Reported upstream.

  • [SOLVED] Chromium with KDE dialogs (open, save)

If I remember correctly, when I used Cromium on Kubuntu, Chromium used  KDE dialogs for save, download and and other things....
This is not the case in the Arch Linux, Chromium use GTK dialogs... Does anyone know why Chromium use GTK dialogs or how to fix that?
    Picture of problem:
    Edit:
Oooouuups.... You need just to install kdebase-kdialog for that....

    Hello,
For me, chromium is not using xdg-open. You can verify it with:
    strace -e process chromium
Then download something and try to open it from chromium. As for solution, try this: install perl-file-mimeinfo package and setup it with 'mimeopen --ask-default some-pdf-file.pdf'.

I have read about setting up the xdg-utils, and believe I have it configured. The following command line when run from bash opens up acroread and displays the PDF:
    xdg-open http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-intro.pdf
This is separate issue, it should run browser (http:// protocol), not acroread. Check this link: http://hiciu.org/some-pdf-file.pdf (harmless). All you know before you open it is the url, not the file type.
Thanks. I already had the "perl-file-mimeinfo" installed.
Yes. The link you gave above is type "image/jpeg", so the browser has to start the download to even know what it has coming.
