[SOLVED] lags in gnome-shell since upgrade to 3.12

Hi,
I have many issues with gnome-shell 3.12, Especially in the overview mode. When I move to the desktop to the applications overview there are some lags.
I had no problems with gnome-shell 3.10.
Did you encounter the same problem?
Thank you

  • [Solved] Nautilus bookmarks - Gnome Shell Doesn't Start

    Hi there.
I've tried to search and have been scratching my head by what probably has a really simple solution but I have not found it so far.
I've made a fresh install of Arch, system is up to date, with Gnome 3 (shell and whatnot).
I've set my locale in /etc/rc.conf to pt_BR and have properly generated locales.
    $ locale -a
    C
    en_US
    en_US.iso88591
    en_US.utf8
    POSIX
    pt_BR
    pt_BR.iso88591
    pt_BR.utf8
    Gnome is localized to pt_BR
Everything is fine and dandy except for a really annoying thing.
    xdg-user-dirs-update
Creates folders with incorrect characters when viewed on Nautilus (but appear correct on Nautilus sidebar).
I tried editing the .config/user-dirs.dirs file with gedit, it showed the wrong characters but allowed me to write the correct ones. Saved it and ran xdg-user-dis-update, the output is borked characters. Tried editing it in nano, same results.
I've managed to manually delete and create the correct folders using
    xdg-user-dirs-update --set MUSIC /home/$USER/Foldername
but, while it displays properly on nautilus when navigating, it doesn't display properly on the sidebar.
I'm linking to a screenshot so it is easier to understand. The music folder should read "Músicas". You can see I'm inside the Videos folder but the sidebar name doesn't match the folder name.

    Any ideas?
EDIT: After this post, I rebooted and gnome shell would no longer start - at all. I would get it to log in and display the wallpaper but that was it. I could get into xfce4 from gdm so I knew the issue was with gnome.
Nonetheless, I went ahead and did yet another reinstall (I always assume I borked a package or hard-to-find-configuration).
Feeling frustated but being a tad wiser I noticed a weird behavior on ~/.xsessionerror
    [Error initializing libicu support]
This went on forever until I aborted the command.
Changing my locale on my rc.conf from pt_BR to en_US fixed gnome-shell. I was once again able to boot into it without a problem. I then, from within gnome, choose portuguese as the default locale (gnome-control-panel, not rc.conf). This fixed the Nautilus issue above and has not stopped gnome-shell from working. I don't know *how* they implement their localization but heck, it works.
Solved and maybe it might help anyone with the same issue.

Hmm, since yesterday I'm fumbling around with those settings too. It seems this is not settings related at all (at least not to old package settings), but rather to nautilus' behavior. Just a few minutes ago I've set "view all hidden files" to true in it's settings. It instantly crashed. After a reboot gnome-shell is gone. This is really annoying.
Also there is no taskbar, no menu bar, no nothing in fallback mode!... Is this even fallback mode?
Trying to launch gnome-shell from terminal then gives:
Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
    with replace option:

Compiz is gone already. What could be causing this issue?

  • [SOLVED] libcairo crashes gnome-shell

    Hi,
I think after one of the updates (I don't run on testing), gnome-shell would crash after few seconds of use. Examining error messages, it seems to be related to libcairo segfault, which I was unable to analyze further. I did some googling on this, but most issues were concerning ATI of nVidia card and/or multiple monitor, from which I use none.
I am pasting hopefully useful logs:

  • [Solved] Bluetooth in gnome-shell not functioning

Hello everyone and thank you for reading this topic,
I'm trying to get bluetooth working on my laptop, My setup is a acer aspire v3 laptop (containing BT-4)running archlinux wth gnome-shell
packages that matter (at least i think):
    [pascal@Skynet:~]$ pacman -Q | grep blue
    bluez 5.21-2
    bluez-firmware 1.2-8
    gnome-bluetooth 3.12.0-1
Result (this is everything no animations/eye-candy, its frozen in this state):
So I'm doing something wrong. I expect my phone to show up (named "tricorder" for alll the trekkies here )
My googling resulted in many people saying that gnome-bluetooth doesnt work with bluez5. But I havent seen a workaround.
    Thanks again!

Might be a stupid question, but have you activated the bluetooth systemd service? Without that, you won't be able to use bluetooth.
EDIT: See the wiki for more information.

  • [solved] Minor issues (gnome-shell crash and keyboard backlight)

    Hi,
I have two very small questions that are probably quite stupid but I just don't know what to enter into google to resolve these issues. I hope you forgive me if I just list those and hope that you can give me some pointers.
    1. When I close the lid on my Dell XPS 13 and open it again gnome-shell crashes. When I press the power button my laptop goes into some kind of sleep state as well but without crashing gnome-shell in the process. So the question is: how can I make the former action behave like the latter?
    2. I'd like to disable the keyboard backlight. Where would I do that?
Any hints, pointers or quick solutions would be appreciated.
Last edited by dkgi (2012-08-06 17:07:20)

    1. You can change what happens after you close the lid using a menu in the 'gnome-tweak-tool'.
        pacman -Syu gnome-tweak-tool
Find out what kind of sleep state is causing the problem by calling the commands from a terminal.
Read this wiki-page to find the commands.
Also read the troubleshooting part of the page.
    2. It is possible to get information about the state of your devices in the '/sys/devices/' virtual filesystem.
For example the light on my thinkpad can be read from '/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/leds/tpacpi::thinklight'
Try to find something similar for the keyboard backlight and find out where to write for changing it.
Sorry, no quick solution here ;-)

  • [SOLVED] External sound output silent since upgrade to GNOME 3.16

    Hi.
I just upgraded my machine to GNOME 3.16 (pacman log). Since then, sound output (whether the GNOME Sound applet test, or Clementine, or YouTube from Firefox)...
... works fine when outputting to the laptop speakers.
... is silent when I plug my external speakers to the computer's jack 3.5" out. I have two outputs, am using the same as before the upgrade but tried both nevertheless, and plugging an mp3 player works.
    Here is my config:
    laptop = Dell XPS 1645
    uname -a = Linux x 3.19.3-3-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 8 14:10:00 CEST 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    pulseaudio = pulseaudio 6.0-1
Any idea? Debug suggestions? Need more info? Thanks for the help.
EDIT: Problem solved after a second reboot :-/

I've tried to reinstall kernel26-lts...and even with this kernel, the same error occurs...It's most likely related to the mkinitcpio creation process.
Did you try the fallback initramfs?

  • [SOLVED] Openbox's obconf issue since upgrade

    Good Afternoon Arch Community,
I use LXDE on top of openbox. since the upgrade, my obconf is throwing up the error:
    Failed to load an rc.xml....
pacman was wanting to upgrade obconf but was complaining about the -git version. I assumed that the new openbox needed the newer obconf. I used
    sudo pacman -Sf obconf
and allowed pacman to do it's thing.
    Same error as pre-obconf upgrade.
Current version in the repos as of this writing is:
    obconf-2.0.3.git20100309-1
I looked in the bugs under "obconf" and found no entries.
Then I went into the "~/.config/openbox" directory and nuked the contents, then recopied the /etc/xdg/openbox files files my home directory where they should be (as per the wiki), and then started "X".
I also verified proper permissions on the files in "~/.config.openbox".
    Same error.
LXDE is still running, but of course my right click options for openbox are now gone as it's not liking something about the files. So my system is not "down" per-se. I've just lost some functionality.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
    Sincerely and respectfully,
    Dave

    Hello bernarcher,
rc.xml already exists in "~/.config/openbox". So I mv'd it to another name, created the symlink and tried again. Same error.
Then I removed the symlink and restored the original file.
Sorry it didn't work, but thank you for the post.....
For the record, here is the contents of my "/.config/openbox" directory:

My system has a couple of stability issues; it freezes up every few days, and I have to make a hard reboot (I think it's related to the video card, but I haven't had the funds to go get a better one yet). The last time it froze was during a pacman upgrade, and I had to reboot. At the new boot, after logging in, all of the gnome-shell letters turned to rectangles (see screenshot), and I had a bunch of other errors. I ran another upgrade Sync with pacman and rebooted; that took care of the errors, but the font problems still remained. The interesting thing is that the gdm window has no problems, I can see the icons on the top right just fine, and the date renders perfectly. It's only when I log in when the blocks occur, and they only occur on gnome-shell panel text (and on everything under Activities).
I have a 32-bit system that's fully migrated to systemd with open source radeon drivers. Here's some output of journalctl for the current boot, with stuff unrelated to the gnome-shell display removed (e.g. NetworkManager, UFW, etc). However, I didn't find any new errors compared to logs from before the upgrade.

I tried using gnome-tweak tool to fiddle around with the fonts, but that didn't help, none of the fonts would render correctly. Cantarell, which I'm assuming is the gnome-shell font, is still in /etc/fonts/conf.avail, so I don't think that the font file itself went missing. I made the fontconfig update a while ago, and that didn't cause any problems.
I also heard that there were problems with xorg-server, so I downgraded xorg-server, pixman, and cairo to their previous versions, but that didn't help either. EDIT: I've also done a pacman -Syyf gnome-shell to try and reinstall gnome-shell. That also didn't work.
I've run out of things to try. If someone else was more familiar with the workings of gnome-shell fonts, or had a better idea of how to debug, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I found that /etc/fonts/conf.avail/31-cantarell.conf existed, but was empty. After doing a pacman -Syyf cantarell-fonts, they went right back to normal!

    Problem disappeared.
I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:

  • Gnome shell lags with open source radeon driver

    Greetings.
I own a radeon 5870m and have been having some issues with gnome for a long time that are bugging the crap out of me.
I never seemed to obtain a smooth gnome experience, specially desktop effects and some 2d operations like resize are noticeably dragging sometimes.
Since kernel 3.11 and dpm i decided to test a bit with other distro's, and to my surprise, running live images of ubuntu 13.10 or fedora 20 beta give me an almost perfect and all around smooth experience in gnome.
I assume they are using by default EXA acceleration, though I can't possibly explain it, because for me the default configuration (no custom xorg conf file) with EXA is even slower and laggier than catalyst drivers in gnome. Switching to glamor gives me some improvement, but in some desktop effects, it still feels a bit laggy. DPM is switched on.
is it possible the other distro's are shipping some Gnome tweaks?
Im running kernel 3.12 with xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 and mesa 9.2 but this issue i have had for the past one year or so. I have direct rendering and most stuff do work fine, but there are noticeable lags in many places which are very annoying.
Im not sure which logs to provide, hope someone has some clues. Many thanks

I have the same issue with the a 7670m (which is a re-branded 6650m) but have never figured out what the issue is beyond just asuming driver issues. I am running an oddball laptop, a Sony Vaio Z, that runs the 7670m as an external card over light peak however performance in Windows was fine though so I don't think lightpeak is the issue. In gnome shell the pressing the super key in activities view is very sluggish and makes switching between applications quite painful compared to running on the built-in Intel HD 4000 GPU. I too have tried glamor and didn't find it made much difference. The performance of 3D games is atrocious on the AMD card compared to Intel, on glmark2 the internal HD 4000 gives a score of 2200 whereas the AMD card gives around 1000 so a big difference.
When I was running Ubuntu, running the latest version of Mesa (labelled 9.3 back then, 10 now) did make a difference in performance so I'm looking forward to the production release at the end of the month and hopefully it will help some. Mesa 10 got the glmark2 up to a score of 1200 so still; way behind the Intel card.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to load Gnome Shell 3.0

    Hi all,
Did a search and didnt find anything on this. I really like gnome3 while testing it on an ubuntu machine and I think with time it would be great. So I said to myself I wonder how great it would be with a nice clean arch install.
I created a fresh install and followed the directions here.....
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME_3
I keep getting package not found errors in pacman though.
I uncommented the testing repo as instructed above
    #testing uncommented
    [testing]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    no dice
pacman -Syu testing/gnome gives me a package not found error.
I thought ok maybe my mirriorlist is too old so I updated my mirrors to the latest....no dice. testing/gnome not found
So I said ok maybe I can just upgrade. I went through the normal gnome 2 install procedure and have a working gnome wm environment. So as instructed above I tried to do the upgrade.
    pacman -S gnome-shell.....no dice. gnome-shell not found.
pacman -Syu always shows testing repo update first so I know thats correct.
The same thing happened to me when kde 4.6 came out. I was unable to load it from the repository. 4.5 kept loading no matter what I did.
This is only my second question on these forums and I have been using arch for 2 years so be gentle ;-) I always try to rtfm first. Then forum search.
I would just try it out in suse but suse is just sooo fat. Folks in the forums there tend to slam a guy for asking an honest question quite a lot too. ( not me but while trying to load broadcom-wl I had to do several searches and wow....) Plus I hate thier package mangement.
Thanks in advance for any advice offered,
    Shakz

on topic though : have you enabled testing and community-testing both?
If you are on 64 bit and are using multilib, then make sure you enable multilib-testing as well. Also make sure that the order of the repos is very important. testing must be before core and extra.
Also what mirrors have you used. Try the kernel.org and see if it helps.
Ah ok thanks for the response. I am using 64bit (sry for not mentioning that) Ill try to enable multilib-testing when I get home.
For repos I have all US repos uncommented as I use powerpill. I only comment out a few that always give connectivity errors.
Testing is uncommented above core and extra.
    Appreciate it Inxsible!

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell 3.4.1: Unable to prevent dynamic workspaces

I am trying to turn off dynamic workspaces and set a permanent number (6) as is supposedly possible since 3.4.
Using dconf, I turn the following setting to 'false':
    /org/gnome/shell/overrides/dynamic-workspaces
and enter '6' in to the following setting:
    /org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/num-workspaces
The '6' is then immediately changed back to however many workspaces the 'dynamic' setting has created at the moment.
Bizarrely, 'overriding' effect does not occur if I change the number when 'dynamic-workspaces' is set to true. Whenever it is set to false, Gnome changes the 'num-workspaces' setting to reflect current realities.
Regardless of settings, the way it works is still 'dynamic' [grumble]worst.use.of.that.word.ever....[/grumble]
Is this a bug? Or am I just not getting it right?
(As a side note,  the frippery static extension thing is currently uninstallable)
EDIT: If I try to set the number of workspaces far above what the current number is, I can see the number going down one-by-one. This would seem to indicate that the window manager is killing them off one after the other, as they aren't occupied. In other words, it's not that the new value is rejected out of hand. It's just that the WM still works dynamically.

  • [solved] Blank screen for few seconds between GDM and Gnome-Shell

    Hi there,
I don't know if this phenomenon is "normal" or not, so I ask : I am using Gnome 3.6 and after I have logged in on GDM I see a blank screen for roundabout 3 seconds before the gnome-shell starts. The whole system is running fine - so this is no "real" problem -, but this 3 seconds of a black screen between GDM and the gnome-shell are somewhat annoying and I want to find out if this behaviour is normal or not .
Indeed, if I look into journalctl, I find this messages:

Actually, I don't know if this is relevant for my little "black-screen" problem (but it looks as if ...).
    And
    $ systemctl status gdm.service
shows nothing to worry about (as far as I can see):

Finally I found out what's going on - and it's so simple
It's just my monitor which is runing on a default resolution of 1920x1080. When I switched to 1600x900 using Gnome's system tools, the monitor needs roundabout two seconds to adjust to this resolution

  • Gnome-Shell in Gnome 3.2 not working after upgrade

    Hi guys,
after upgrading from Pacman, Gnome-Shell does not start up correctly. After login the Gnome-Keyring pops up (as usual) and after entering my password Gnome-Shell crashes ("oops.. something went wrong bla bla").
I could resolve this problem by deinstalling Empathy.
So basically I just wanted to inform others who may experience the same problem. Anyone knows why Empathy does not work correctly?

I don't have this problem, but I have issues with Empathy's new clutter-based call UI not coming up.  May be the problem is with clutter??
