[SOLVED] Laptop not rebooting/powering off

Hello!
It seems I have a problem with rebooting and powering off.
The symptom: stuck on "Rebooting" message.
I've read the systemd wiki page. The wiki advises to read this article. In the article, they suggest to check if it's a kernel problem first, by trying to reboot with the following command:
sync && reboot -f
This command also does not work. From the article:
If either one of the commands does not work, it is a kernel bug, not systemd.
I have no idea what can fix this and have not found any clue on the wiki.
Thanks.
UPDATE:
I managed to "solve" the issue by using the lts kernel instead the latest one.
pacman -S linux-lts
Now powering off, rebooting and sleep working fine.

Well, I wasn't able to solve the problem yet, but at least got some updated info. After disabling NMI (by setting kernel.nmi_watchdog = 0 in /etc/sysctl.d/disable_watchdog.conf), issuing sudo systemctl restart results in the following message:
A stop job is running for Daemon for power management
And nothing else on screen. I have waited about half an hour, but it never finishes. Just to make it more clear, there's a picture.
I would really appreciate any help, since I don't know in which direction else to check.
Regards.

  • My iphone 4s will not stay powered off

When I power off my Iphone, the screen goes black for a few seconds, and then the apple logo appears and the phone powers back on. I have tried resetting it (I think) by holding both the lock button and the home screen button at the same time, but the problem continues. The phone indicates that it is up to date on all software.
The phone also seems to be draining battery charge at a faster rate. I purchased the phone in December 2011, so it is not that old.
    Any suggestions.

  • Laptop not powering off with powered usb hub attached

I have an external powered USB hub which I have attached to my G60 running Windows 7 Home Premium. When I try to shut down the G60 with the hub attached and powered on, the shutdown sequence goes through Logging Off to Shutting Down but never fully powers off. The power and wireless lights stay on and the fan continues to run.
Is there a way around this apart from powering off the USB hub before shutdown?
    This question was solved.

    Hi @Andrew_c51 ,
I saw your post regarding the problems with your notebook not shutting down all the way when the powered USB hub is connected. It almost sounds like your notebook is going into sleep or hibernation. I would recommend contacting the manufacturers of the powered USB to see if there is a way of stopping this or just disconnect the hub.

  • [SOLVED] laptops backlight not powering on after suspend

I'm on the g+ arch community, it seems that a few of us there have an issue with our laptops not waking from suspend, and I've seen a few issues like this, here, on the arch forum.
    http://pastebin.com/eXebMFTy
This is my dmesg after the said issue occurs...
I'm on an intel macbook 4,1 with kernel 3.15.1-1-ARCH.
I looked at the arch wiki page about backlights, and it said that I could get info on my backlight drivers at /sys/class/backlight. I'm guessing that since using intel graphics drivers, I should have a directory there called intel-backlight, or intel-dri, or something, but it's empty. This doesn't seem kosher... and it seems that a lot of us on the g+ community are using intel drivers, and this started happening for me after/around-the-same-time-as I did a pacman -Syu that upgraded my intel-dri and xf86-video-intel.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that, yes, it's just the backlight. If I take a flashlight the to the screen, I can see stuff there, and I can see stuff changing if I were to start scrolling, mashing buttons, et cetera. I can ssh to the machine in question and restart it, I also tried 'xset dpms force on' over ssh, but it fails because it says the display isn't recognized, even if I set DISPLAY manually. Before a suspend, I'm able to 'xset force dpms off && sleep 5 && xset force dpms on' successfully.
Rexilion wrote:Did this ever work on another kernel version?
I upgraded to 3.15.2-1-ARCH last night, it didn't have any effect. I'll try a downgrade tonight, and I'll check my pacman.log to see if I had a kernel upgrade around-the-same-time-as the backlight started fucking up.

  • Help: System won't reboot and powers off

I'm going out of my mind here.
I've been putting together an A64 system for 3 weeks now, and I get the weirdest behavior.
I put the system together with the following components:
    Neo Platinum Bios 1.3
    A64 3000+
    MSI 128MB 6800
    1 512MB Kingmax ddr500 DIMM in slot 1
Antec sonata case with Antec tru380 PS
    NEC dvd burner
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB IDE drive
I could get it to boot up and start installing windows, but when it formatted the drives and would go to reboot, it would instead just power down.  If I hit the power switch, it would either start the fans, but not post with the diag lights all lit red, or do nothing.  If I pull the power cord for about 10 seconds and plug it back it, it will usually then post again.
I've bought or borrowed the following components and used them trying to solve this:
    Antec NeoPower 480 PS
    A different A64 3000+
    2 different Mushkin pc2700 256MB sticks
    A seagate 200GB hd
    2 different cd/dvd burners
    A different case
    A GeForce 3ti200
A UPS to be sure it wasn't a house power issue
    Some additional notes:
Thinking it may be a heat or heat sensor issue after a poweroff, I went into the bios and watched the hardware monitor the temp reads 65C which seemed high, but I see here there is a temp reporting problem with the bios.  More than once, when I hit the escape key to exit the hardware mon, the machine powered off.
Refusing to be beaten I slowly managed to get windows XP with SP1 installed on this machine.  Maybe once out of ten times I can get it to reboot, the rest of the time, trying to reboot does as above.
A few times while in windows, it has powered itself down while doing random things, often while typing into it.
So, I've read several suggestions here today that I will try such as putting the memory into DIMM slot 2 or 3.  Perhaps, I just have 3 DIMMS that all don't work with this board.  That will sure make this a much more expensive upgrade.
I've also seen much mention of problems being caused by keyboards.  I find it baffling that a keyboard could cause the above problems, especially the power cord needing to pulled for 10-20 seconds, but I will replace that that as well.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what is happening?  Could the board be bad?  It would be the second bad board I've gotten in trying to build this system.  The first was by another brand and had leads on the bottom of the board that were partially melted or scraped off, which is why I switched to the Neo Platinum.  Am I just the most unlucky person in the world????
    Help and thanks,
    mike

It very well could be power supply, even the one you temporarily installed could not have delivered enough amperage to get it through one of the more strenuous periods of system boot-up. You will need a healthy 22 to 24 amps PSU. Also, make sure the RAM you have installed, or tested with - is listed on MSI's test report for this board. Per RAM type, some sticks are only approved to run in certain slots.
Sounds to me either a RAM or PSU or both RAM and PSU issue. In addition...heat could also be a problem.

  • Docking open T61p on the Advanced dock powers off the laptop

    Hi,
I have noticed a weird problem with using the T61p with the advanced docking station. I undock the laptop and then close it, so that it goes into hibernate mode. Then a few hours later, if I open the laptop and work on it undocked. After that if I dock the laptop without going into hibernate, the laptop just powers off, i.e. as if the Power off button was kept pressed.
The laptop does not give the OS the shutdown command, just switches the device off. I am running Win XP professional.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue? This causes all work to be lost, when the laptop is docked.
    Thanks in advance.

    Ivan.

  • HELP: My MacBook was on sleep mood then would not reboot, eventually it did and i has the sleep mood light flashing 3 times and like a siren noise going off .

    Help please
I used my MacBook yesterday and left it on sleep mode as usual. The battery had drained during the night. So I plugged in the charger and it started up as normal. Then a notice came up saying shut down using the power button as an unexpected error had occurred. I done as it asked then I could not reboot or turn on at all. It felt like a power surge was going through the laptop. I eventually got it turned on and sent the report off to apple. The screen kept flickering so I turned it back off and took the battery out and tried to turn on again. This then proceeded to make the sleep light blink 3 times and then there was a siren sounding noise and a blank screen, I turn it off and now I have managed to reboot and all seem to be working fine. I am really worried as I love my MacBook and cant afford to replace it.
Thank you for your help in advance

  • TS3694 So I have an iphone4g in recovery mode. followed all the steps to the T. Error pops up in itunes 1602. Prior it was powered off during erase all content and settings mode waiting to reboot

So I have an iphone4g in recovery mode. Followed all the steps to the T. Error pops up in itunes 1602. Prior it was powered off during erase all content and settings mode while waiting to reboot. Now its back to the apple logo. Any ideas if powering it off during the erase all content damaged the software?

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • External firewire drive not powering off????

I have a new G5 Dual core 2.5, running os10.4.3, which is working well apart from the fact that it is not powering off the external lacie drive when the G5 shuts down, any ideas??

    Hi
it's a documented small issue on Lacie website FAQ section:
My FireWire d2 does not power off when I shut down the computer.
"Some computers do not cut all power to the FireWire bus when shutdown. If the FireWire bus is providing any power to the d2 it will not shutdown.
To determine if this is the issue with your computer, shut down and disconnect the power cable from the computer (or remove the laptop battery). If the drive then powers off, your computer does not cut all power to the FireWire bus.
You can press the blue button to turn the d2 off manually."
    cheers

  • DROID X DOES NOT RETRIEVE EMAIL UNLESS POWERED OFF, THEN ON

I've identified through testing and confirmed that my 3 day old Droid X does NOT actually retrieve email from a third party (non Google) mail server WITHOUT having to power it down, then back up first.  Activating the cute little manual retrieving spinning circle, in fact, does NOTHING.
I have tested this a MILLION times after not getting emails.  MANUAL or SCHEDULED settings absolutely do not work.
I REPEAT, I do not receive  email unless powered off then on
I set the the following to no avail:
    * battery profile to "Performance"
    * Data Delivery settings to "Background data" enabled
    * Data roaming to enabled
    * Email and Corporate Synch settings/Email delivery settings "Data Push" to enabled
    * "Fetch Schedule" to EITHER "15 minutes" or "manual" (either of which shouldn't matter if Data Push is enabeled)
    * Sync over WI-FI Only is disabled
Not retrieving email is critical to my business- I use a device for email more than I talk to anyone.
This constitutes a breech of service unless it is immediately rectified.
    My Droid X was delivered as the following;
    Version 1.13.604.MB810.Verizon.en.US
    Firmware 2.1-update-1
    Baseband Version BP_C_01.04P
    Kernel Version 2.6.29 w30471@il93lnxdroid08 #1
    Build Number VZW
    ERI Version 5
    PRL Version 51926

I Have had this Happen more than once Now i'll Be using my Wi-Fi Then when i shut it off on the X  it does not want to Re- Connect with the Network at all.   An i'm wondering if its beacause of a setting that i may have it on or maybee an App. Causing this issue
Has any one experienced this on there X
Now when i shut the X off an do the restart it's back on.
I don't use WiFi very often (work doesn't allow non work computers to connect, and at home I use my laptop), but I find at work that my phone sometimes doesn't want to connect to the Network when I walk into the building from the parking ramp (very spotty service on the ramp).
What I do to correct this without restarting, I turn on 'airplane' mode until I see the little airplane in the notification bar, then turn airplane mode off. Within a minute, the network is reconnected and working in 3g just fine.
Location is also part of the problem. I work on the first floor of the building. They are doing remodeling on my floor right now, so I am now on the top floor and have not had this happen since the move a month ago. Since my floor is below a hill with another building on top of the hill between my normal location and the closest tower, the line of sight is hidden, so I expect small problem with it. It doesn't happen all the time, but I do notice it when I try to run internet radio at work.

  • Pages in offline reading list not available after powering off iPad

    Try this on your iPad:
    1. In safari, save a few web pages to your reading list
    2. Set the iPad to airplane mode
    3. Power off your iPad
    4. Power it back on
    5. Try reading the pages in your reading list
This is what I did when going on a flight. Most of the pages I had saved could not be displayed once in the air. Some pages could be displayed, but only once. Once I left the page, I could it not bring back up a second time.
Does anyone experience the same? In my case, the trigger of the problem seems to be powering off the iPad (which is what you are supposed to do during airplane take off).
Any ideas how I can resolve the issue, other than not powering the iPad off?
    Thank you!

I could not reproduce the behavior that you are experiencing in Safari. I have no problems at all using the Reading List in Airplane mode after turning the iPad off and on again. You can try some basic housekeeping stuff with Safari and the iPad.
Clear the Safari cache and see if that helps, reboot the iPad and see if that helps. You can also try closing Safari before you power off so that you are launching Safari all over again rather than just activating it from the inactive state in the task bar.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Clearing history is not a necessity.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit the app completely and relaunch after start up. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad and launch Safari again.

  • Laptop powers off abruptly!

Its been 8 months since I'm running Solaris (Nevada build 70b) without any issues on my laptop (Toshiba Tecra). However, since past 3 days, I'm running into a strange problem. The laptop powers off abruptly!
The battery is fully charged, there is enough memory (2Gig), it happens even when its idle and its totally unpredictable. First day, it powered off 3-4 times, yesterday it happened only once.
At first, I suspected that it might be a hardware problem. I booted into Windows and kept the laptop running for a whole day, nothing happened.
Any ideas on what to do?

  • DVR7232 With e-Sata Expansion Drive Reboots Whenever Onkyo TX-DS898 A/V Receiver Powered Off

Have an Onkyo TX-DS898 A/V receiver (doesn't have HDMI) connected to DVR7232 via component cable + optical cable. A Verizon-recommended Western Digital e-Sata drive is connected to the DVR. Each component worked together without difficulty for several months.
Due to unrelated DVR failure, have replaced the DVR twice in last few weeks. Have performed the "enable more storage" routine many times, formatting the expansion drive each time. The expansion drive is recognized and shows as 100% available.
Once the A/V receiver is turned off, the DVR shows the time for about 5 seconds, then reboots. I have tried powering off the TV, DVR and A/V receiver in different sequences with the same result. I've done this so many times that every so often, the reboot doesn't occur for several on-off cycles, then it starts rebooting again. If I disconnect the e-Sata drive the reboot problem goes away completely.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. It pointed me in a new direction to solve the mystery.
My problems had begun following a power failure. When the power was restored, there was no FiOs picture or sound. Roku and Blueray worked with picture and sound. No connections had been made differently. Verizon customer service was unable to resolve even after sending two replacement DVRs.
I control my setup with a Harmony remote, so I re-downloaded the command software to the remote. By trial and error, determined that the A/V receiver had lost some internal settings, which I restored. Now everything worked, except for DVR reboot issue. I now noticed that the A/V receiver fully powers off instead of going to Standby the way it used to. The external hard drive was plugged in to the receiver. I switched the drive to another outlet and the problem was fixed. Somehow, the Harmony remote reload altered the A/V power down command.
Again, thanks to both of you who took the time to reply to me. PROBLEM SOLVED!
