[solved] Laptop screen stays off

After updating today which only gave me a new kernel(which I had been ignoring), mkinitcpio-busybox and systemd 192-1, the screen stays off when I open the lid.
Normally when I close the lid, walk into another room and open the lid, the screen is on before I get the lid to 45 degrees. This morning after updating and rebooting to use the new kernel and using it for a while, I shut the lid to carry the laptop to a new location and when I opened the lid the screen stayed off.
I thought the f*&^%$&ng screen had died.
I'm guessing it's something in the systemd update that is suspending or hibernating the system as a keypress and 5-10 sec wait has the screen back on but I don't want that. Can I get a clue on what to undo so I have the usual behaviour back?

If you don't want things to ever change, Slackware might be a better option for you than a very fast paced rolling release like Arch.
With systemd, Linux is seeing more change than it's seen in a long time.

So i searched online and others with this model seem to have the same problem and I'm wondering if anyone has found a solution. So pretty much after putting my computer to sleep or shutting it down, when I press the power button or hit a key to turn it back on the lights light up. By that I mean the lights on the keyboard and I can hear the laptop fan turn on also. But the screen stays off and the lights just stay on. If I hit the power button again, the lights turn off immediately and if i hit it again they turn back on. At first it was only once in a while but now I can't get it to boot up for hours and almost a full day. It's not the screen because if it was it wouldn't stay on once it was on but it does. My laptop is less than a year old Please I don't want to have to buy a whole new one when I bought this one with my own cash for college. Any help would be great. I've tried battery drain and nothing. Tried taking out the battery and using just the power cord. Same. It boots up normally whenever it wants

If the computer is less than a year old, it should still be under warranty. I would call the Call Center at 800-457-7777 and let them know how this computer has become intermittent and not bringing up the video. This sounds like a hardware problem and the computer needs to be serviced.

One of my two screens stays off after coming from standby - OSx 10.10.2 MacMini

When 'reviving' my macmini after not using it for a while one of my screens stays black (The screen stays off so there is no contact from the mac). Even after logging in again the screen stays black.
I can get it to work again by disconnecting both screens and plugging them back in, but that is not a real solution of course. Also, after switching the position of the screens the other screen stays off, so the problem should be in the connection.
I've got a relatively new MacMini with OSx 10.10.2 and have the two screens (same size but not identical) attached via two 'mini displayport to DVI adapters'.
Does anyone have any idea what can cause this?

Screen stays off after wake up from standby

So this happens most often when I have an external display connected, but has happened otherwise to me and my friend who has identical macbook.
usually, I'll connect the external display, then shut the screen on the macbook, then wake the macbook with an external mouse or keyboard, and use the macbook with the external display. When I'm done and want to disconnect the external display, i'll unhook it, and then open the screen on the macbook. when I open the screen, the standby light (the one that pulsates when in standby, and stays bright when screen is off and computer is not in standby) turns off, signifying that the computer has woken and the screen is running, but the screen remains off. the function keys for volume or contrast make nothing appear on the screen, and it is completely off, rather than just showing a black screen. if I shut the screen when this is happening, the standby light turns back on, and upon opening screen again, the standby light turns off again, but still, no display. it seems the only way to alleviate the problem is to hold the power button for 5 seconds. I've tried resetting the pram, and everything else you can reset upon booting, as well as doing the thing where you take the battery out, disconnect power, and hold power button for 7 seconds. nothing stops it from happening.
If i open the screen before disconnecting the external display, it usually works fine, but sometimes it happens without an external display ever being present.
any ideas?

I use a dual monitor system at work all the time. The best thing to do is to disconnect the second monitor while your computer is still awake and open. It doesn't like it when you put it to sleep and then disconnect. It's probably like putting toothpaste in the ear of your best friend when he's drunk and passed out. Then when he wakes up he wonders why he can't hear out of one ear.

Pavilion g6 turns on but screen stays off

My laptop screen will not turn on. I hear the laptop itself turn on but screen does not turn on. This is the second time within a year that I've had problems with this laptop. I've tried the hard reset and tried powering it up without the battery and just the power cord and nothing. Please help! I'm lost on what to try next.

Please post the full product number for your notebook. See the following, if you need help with that information.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
Is there any sign that the display is getting power, a slight flicker, or a bit of backlighting, to indicate the display is powered?
Do you see anything on the display at all during startup, such as error messages?
Was there anything done to the notebook just prior to the display going out on you? Software or driver updates, new hardware, or anything accidental.

[SOLVED] Laptop screen blank (black)

Hey there
I left my laptop (dell vostro 1520) for about half an hour running on my desk. After coming back, the screen was black and could not be turned on again. The screen is still black after several reboots. I cannot even see the bios loading screen at the very beginning. One could think now that my screen is broken... but when the udev hook is triggered on boot, the screen flashes up for about 1 second. The same happens when I change the screen resolution. My external screen is still working, although the resolution is messed up after each reboot.
Any advice on this?

Try this: Take a flashlight (torch?) and illuminate the screen at an angle to the screen and see if you can see any picture on the display where it is illuminated. You may need to move your head and/or the light to eliminate glare. If you can see a picture, you have a failed backlight. If your display uses CCFL tubes (as opposed to LEDS) then I would bet a beer you have a bad inverter.
Take a look and let us know. If you can see something, you might try hooking up an external monitor and using the light to allow you to see well enough to get to the point where you can enable the external display.

[solved]Laptop battery stays at 0% and doesn't charge (but 99% in Win)

I've a problem with my ThinkPad T410. Since one of the last pacman updates KDE shows permanently 0% battery status and the values does not increase any more. If I boot into Windows 7, however, the battery status is at 99%, So I assume that it's a ACPI problem.

It's solved, but not by upgrading upower (although it might be the cause because I updated that package some days ago). I don't know which package solved it, but it has to be one of these:

Hello,my iMac is giving of 3 alarm type beeps when i switch it on.the screen stays off and so is unusable.the alarm type noise continues until i switch off..any ideas please ?

What Mac do you have and how much RAM. You could try reseating the chips, or if you have enough RAM try pulling chips out and testing via a process of elimination.

KDE - Keep Screen Turned Off When The Lid Is Closed

Hello all,
I configured KDE to turn off the screen when I close my lid and this part works OK.
Problem is, once I move the mouse while the lid is closed the screen wakes up (it's not hard to tell, light gets out from the sides).
If I configure the lid action to be sleep, the computer sleeps and wakes up with lid close/open with the mouse not getting in the way.
Any idea on how I can configure it to block mouse input while the lid is closed so the screen stays off?

You're a genius!!! It worked. It wasn't the keyboard that was not reset properly, it is the escape (hey, it kind of looks like Escape - with a Ellen degeneres slang ) key. It is on the fritz and does not want to sit properly. I removed it temporarily, and, voila, it works again.
Thanks again for the headache solved. Now on to my 3 and 5 year old girls - a totally different problem. Maybe it is their CPU???

Satellite Pro P100 - Screen stays blank

Computer seems to be on, but the laptop screen stays blank.
Ok so right now the power light is on and HD and the back fan is not on, and when I press the power button, the HD and the back fan comes on and then the power light just flashes, but nothing is on the screen, and the the keyboard lights (capslock/numlock etc) do not flash like they would on a boot up. That leads me to assume that the laptop is hibernating or something, but it should come out of hibernation (if it was) on a press on the power button, but nothing happens when I do that.
also connected an external monitor to the back of the laptop, got nothing on the screen as well.
any ideas?

Hm, it could be a mainboard issue or something else. I doubt that its a problem of the internal display because tested an external display and there you can notice the same issue.
What you can do is this following workaround: Remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor and then wait one hour. Connect the AC/DC adaptor and battery again. Now you can try to start the notebook again.
If it doesnt work I would ask a notebook technician from an authorized service provider. Maybe its a hardware malfunction and the ASP can test your notebook.

My son's MacBook won't start up. When I turn it on, I can barely hear some faint clicks spaced about 1 or 2 seconds apart and the screen stays off.
What are the chances this is a bad HD?
Also, I've got a MBP and both my machine and my son's MB take serial ATA hd's. If I erase and reformat my MBP HD, I should be able to put it in his MB so he can use this as his HD, correct? (The reason I ask this is that I've wanted a faster and larger HD for my MBP. This may give me the reason to go out and get it.)

Doesn't sound very good. I would expect to see the screen turn on with a flashing question mark or something. Even if the hard drive is dead, you should be able to boot from an installer DVD. My money is on the power supply.

DriveReadySeekComplete errors are either:
- IDE controler failure
- Bad cables
- Bad harddisk
Out of these 3, the last one sounds the most reasonable with nowadays harddrives. And yes, your system will hang when all your important processes are hanging while trying to do disk I/O.
What windows does is switching back to PIO mode and never report anything, until you hit the nice BSOD telling you to replace the floppydisk in drive C...

My 15" laptop screen is dark, but computer works fine with plug in large screen

I am not sure if I hit a key combo or something, but laptop screen is off. Laptop is on and works fine and I can see everything on large plugged in 27" screen, nothing on laptop. It is as if I accidentally hit a toggle switch combo to turn off laptop screen while leaving on a plugged-in screen, like you can on a PC when going between laptop and, for example, a projector. any ideas? I recently switched to mac after 20 years on a PC. New MacBook pro.

MBP Display stays off during power up

So every time I power my MBP up, the screen stays off, and I have to manually adjust the brightness to turn it on and up. I'm guessing it's just a setting I need to change, but I haven't been able to find it. Any Help? Thanks

Managed to get it going agin by doing a restore from my backup. Had to do the <Command, R> during power on, and do it from there. Hopefully it will be ok now.
