[SOLVED] Libre Office Writer 4.2.3 freezes trying to open docx file

After the upgrade of the Libre Office suite from 4.2.2 to 4.2.3, I cannot open docx files - the UI freezes with no response to keyboard or mouse.
Downgrading all libreoffice-* packages to 4.2.2-5 allows Writer to open the files once again correctly.
The only other issue I've seen on the forum is related to a dependency on gstreamer-0.10, but since I'm able to install all 4.2.3 packages I assume it's not that causing this problems.
Anyone else having similar problems?

  • Freeze trying to open a file

Whenever I try to open a file from somewhere the rainbow swirl starts spinning and never stops. I have to restart the application.
For instance when I try to upload a file from a browser the form in which I have to select a file freezes. It wasn't that that big of a problem because I could fire up a virtual machine and use a browser from there. I just downloaded Xcode though and I get the same freeze when I try to open a project.

  • Pages app freezes when trying to open .doc file

    Hello everyone!
Recently I faced the problem with opening .doc files originally created in Word for Windows in Pages. If the .doc file contains any table, Pages app constantly freezes trying to open it so I have to Force quit it. It happened with few documents containing tables. If the .doc file contains no tables everything works OK.
I've tried to open files created in Word 2003 and 2007 for Windows. My iWork's version is 4.0.3 (766).
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi Old-cockatoo
    Welcome to the forum.
Try altering the format/ing of the original file and see what may be the cause. e.g. Try saving to .rtf.
Check if there are unsupported features in the Word tables, such as rotated text in cells or a rotated page. Essentially look for variances that could trigger the problem.
Also look for alternatives to Pages:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=47&mforum=iworktipsn trick
Pages is not a full substitute for MsWord despite what Apple suggests, implies, hints, intimates, signals, presupposes, infers, signals, says indirectly, gives you to understand… but doesn't actually say if you read the fine print.

  • I am trying to open pptx files on my MacBook Pro and continue to get "No Text Converter is installed for this application" even though I have dowloaded several converters that were supposed to work and I just downloaded Apache Open Office 3.4.1

I am trying to open pptx files on my MacBook Pro and continue to get "No Text Converter is installed for this application" even though I have dowloaded several converters that were supposed to work and I just downloaded Apache Open Office 3.4.1 with no luck.  I am able to open docx files with the converters I have installed but not pptx files.

The PPTX file type is primarily associated with 'Power Point' by Microsoft Corporation.
This is the new format for Microsoft Office documents.
It is a combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size reduction.
To open Office 2008 for Mac documents (format .xlsx, .docx, .pptx) in Office for Mac 2004, you must download and install the Open XML File Format Converter. This article describes how to obtain and install the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac.

Instead of all that, and buying OfficeMac etc...
Try to see if the FREE LibreOffice suite will open the file on your Mac.

  • I just downloaded MS Office 2011 to my Notebook.  Having trouble opening excel files.

When I try to open xcel spreadsheets from my thumb drive, it gives me the following msg: the file format or extension is not valid.Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file. The file extension reads: xlxs
I can open all other files on my thumb drive. If the advice is that I need to change the file extension, how would I go about doing that?

I think you are talking about *.xlsx files which are the default format for Excel both Windows an Mac versions. Try opening the file within in the program. Example file, open, then select your file. If that don't work try opening the file in Excel for Windows and resaving it as a .xlsx and a .xls version then see which one opens on the Mac Office.

  • The "Downloads Window" freezes after I open a file from it.

    Win7 system.
    I just upgraded from FF12 to FF14.01.
I discovered that I was able to open only one or two files from the Downloads Window, after which the window would stop working properly. Double-clicking a file did nothing beyond highlighting its entry. Right-clicking and using the contextual menu doesn't open it either. Shutting down and reloading FF doesn't improve the situation. Only rebooting seems to get me anywhere, then only for a file or two.
PS: downgrading to FF 13 didn't help. The folder acts the same way in v-13. It was working fine in v-12 earlier today.
Thanks in advance for any wisdom anyone can pass along ...

    in search bar, type "about:config"
Do this to see if it works.
    search for "scan"
double click the first one to turn off the scanning of files when done.
    "browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone"
    -- set to false.
I'm running microsoft security essentials so i think that's what was causing my freezes. Here's is how i fixed mine.
    Here's what i did :
Open microsoft security essentials and go to settings.
Under " Excluded Processes" .. browse for mozilla firefox in your program files and add it to the exclusion. --- click "add" then "save changes".
This somehow solved my problem... hopefully whoever reads this, this will also solve yours.

  • [Solved, install dejavu font] Libre Office fonts are rendered as boxes

Been a while since I've posted and thank you in advance for any help offered.
My issue is pretty straight forward:  all my menus and fonts in Libre Office Writer show up as boxes instead of letters.  I have searched the wiki and forums for a solution but most people who have this problem fix the issue by installing the right language pack.
As you can see below that isn't my issue:
    local/libreoffice-common 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
common files for LibreOffice - a productivity suite that is compatible with other major office suites
    local/libreoffice-en-US 4.1.4-3
English (US) language pack for LibreOffice
    local/libreoffice-writer 4.1.4-3 (libreoffice)
    Word Processor Application for LibreOffice.
I have no plug-ins installed apart from hunspell, mythes and hyphenation.  I removed these packages but there was no change.
This machine is a Dell laptop with the Intel video chip and thus I have the correct driver installed and everything else works fine:
:root: ~ : pacman -Qs intel
    local/intel-dri 10.0.2-1
    Mesa drivers for Intel
    local/xf86-video-intel 2.99.907-2 (xorg-drivers xorg)
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
I tried nuking my Libre Office directory in my home directory but that yielded no change.  My .gtk-* directories don't contain anything specific to LO.
These are the only fonts I've added to this install (thanks boohoomil) and are not customised in any way:
    local/cairo-infinality-ultimate 1.12.16-3 (infinality-bundle)
Cairo vector graphics library with respect-fontconfig, expose and Ubuntu patches (infinality-bundle)
    local/fontconfig-infinality-ultimate 2.11.0-15 (infinality-bundle)
A library for configuring and customizing font access (includes generic fontconfig package and ultimate settings by bohoomil).
    local/freetype2-infinality-ultimate 2.5.2-3 (infinality-bundle)
TrueType font rendering library with Infinality patches and custom settings by bohoomil (infinality-bundle).
I have gone so far as to try snapwm and Xfce4 but there is no difference in the font rendering in LO.
I'm stymied about this because I have used this setup previously on this and two other machines.  Any ideas?

I thought of that but, as I use the infinality-bundle, which fonts do I need to test this hypothesis?  Or can you suggest one I can install from the official repos?
[edit]  Just after posting this I remembered that LO, as noted on the wiki somewhere, suggest one install the ttf-dejavu font.  After installing this font everything is now showing correctly.
@nomorewindows, Thank you very much!  I feel a bit silly but I learned something from this and for that I grateful to you.

  • I installed Libre Office on my Macbook Pro and now I can't remove it!!!

I installed Libre Office on my Macbook Pro. It displays on my desktop the same as a USB would, offering me to eject "Libre Office". I am having trouble trying to get rid of it, as im not even sure I know how to uninstall stuff on here!
    Please help me

You haven't installed it. You've just downloaded it to your computer. Double-click on the .dmg file to mount it like an external drive. Double-click on the disk icon, then drag the Libre Office file into your Applications folder.
You can then eject the disk icon after which you can delete the .dmg file.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Safari freezes when trying to open files.

I am trying to open files on my computer through Safari. I am trying to open a file through Avery.com, but it's not Avery that is the problem, I don't believe. All I have to do is open Safari, click on File>Open File, and the same thing happens every time: it freezes. I've never had a problem with it before until now and I am extremely frustrated.
The "Open File" window pops open and all the iMovies start to try to load up. Well, I don't want to open iMovies, I want to open a file that is on my desktop. But I can't click on "desktop;" I can't click on anything. The little rainbow-colored icon starts spinning and Safari freezes up. I thought maybe the computer was just trying to load a bunch of videos, so I went away for a while (nearly an hour), but when I came back, that stupid rainbow-colored disc was still spinning away and I had to force a "quit."
I have restarted the computer, I have updated the computer, I have checked the Internet Plug-ins (of which I have none. Is this because I emptied the cache and deleted all history? I thought maybe that would help safari, but it didn't), and now I have no idea what to do.
Thanks for any and all help.

    Hi,
    Check Safari/Preferences - Extensions.
And empty the Safari cache either from the menu bar, Safari/Empty Cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
    And try restarting your Mac.

  • Problem with .docx files and Office 2004

After the upgrade to Snow Leopard, I now am receiving a message "There is not enough memory or disk space to convert." when I try to open a Office 2007/2008 docx file. The error does not happen on all docx files, but only on files over 100kb. The same files that do not work now, all worked prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard. I am using a fully patched Office 2004 (11.5) in addition to the open XML compatibility software 1.1.1 from Microsoft. I have removed all error and duplicate fonts and repaired disk permissions.
I have looked on both Apple and Microsoft for an answer, but nothing except Microsoft claiming Office 2008 will work seamlessly with Snow Leopard.

I just came across this problem too. Very frustrating. I just got this new MacBook Pro last week (so I'm using Snow Leopard too). I installed Office 2004, updated it to 11.5, and installed the open XML conversion software, but no dice. I absolutely should have plenty of memory and disk space to do any docx conversion.
Also, I'm only trying to convert a 20KB docx file, so large file size isn't an issue here. And my copy of Office 2004 is totally legit, in case that's a question.
I really need to be able to open docx files for work, so this is a real problem for me. Help me, Apple-wan Kenobi!

  • [solved] "failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED" ATA errors

    Hi!
Edit: Thinking about it, this could quite well be the famous "5184 hours" bug on micron SSDs. The 3624 seconds until failure basically scream for it being that issue. I'll do a firmware update after I have performed a backup and see if that helps.
Since shortly (I do not remember it to be linked to a kernel upgrade) I keep getting these error messages after a while, with the system freezing and usually not recovering:

The computer is a thinkpad T410i, with this ATA controller:
    » lspci |grep ATA
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 06)
    and this hard drive:
    # smartctl -a /dev/sda |grep Model
    Model Family: Crucial/Micron RealSSD m4/C400
    Device Model: M4-CT128M4SSD2
Google and the error message suggest this is related to errors in the communication between the SATA controller and the hard drive. Usually things like "try another SATA cable" or "try a better power supply" are suggested, so I tried removing and re-inserting the drive into the slot; that didn't help though. What could I do now? I guess swapping the SATA cable or trying a better power supply is out of question
The disk itself seems fine to me, here's the SMART report:
    # smartctl -a /dev/sda

Looks like the firmware update solved it.

  • Hi there, I have a Macbook Pro and I have been using Libre Office but I am not happy with it. I need a good word processing package to produce a manuscript and don't know if I have to get Word for Mac and how to put my documents into it.

    Hi there and hello everybody.
I am writing a book and have been using Libre Office and would like a better word processing package.
I have heard that Pages 5 is better than the latest one. I need to be able to put my Libre Office documents
into Pages. Anyone know how to do this please?

Thanks. So would you say Word is the best processing package? And how do I choose which package 'opens' them.
This is a basic computer skill you might want to learn. You can always control which application opens any document, and the steps below apply to any Mac or Windows computer you use:
Method 1: Drag the document icon on top of the application (Word, Pages, LibreOffice...) icon and release. The system will open the document in the application you dragged it to.
Method 2: Go into the application (Word, Pages, LibreOffice...) and choose File/Open. Locate and select the document, and click the Open or OK button.
Method 3: Select the document icon and choose File/Open With, then choose the application you want to open the document with.
The only time these don't work is when the application cannot open that type of document. For example, you usually can't make a photo editor open a text file. But Word, Pages, and LibreOffice all know how to open text files, RTF files, and Word files.
But if it is important that the document formatting is exactly preserved when exchanging with other Word users, you really should use Word. If you can't afford to pay the retail price for a copy, Microsoft now lets you use Office for $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year.

  • Libre office can not start in arch with lxde (clucene was installed)

installed Arch on Asus Eee Pc 900 (very old, cpu - 900 MHz, ram 1 G)
then installed lxde and libre office.
the problem is that Libre Office can not start and show the message with
a language I don't understand. It say that:
    LibreOffice 4.0-Fatal Error
Die toepassing kan nie laat loop word nie.
    'n interne fout het voorgekom.
so I google and read some post.
I fount that I may need clucene installed.
    that's why, I installed clucene.
    but problem is still exit.
    any solution, please!

It doesn't fix the main problem, but read the note and install English langpack https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … stallation
The error message isn't very helpful, it says
    The application can not run.
    An internal error occurred.

I don't know what file formats LibreOffice supports, but my guess is it can only handle the OpenXML format (new Office docs).
You could use this online converter: http://www.zamzar.com/convert/doc-to-docx/
