Solved Lightroom 2.2 Freeze-ups

Ever since Lightroom 1.4 through ver 2.2 my system would freeze or crash after developing 30 to 50 images, requiring a system restart. I got fed up with it after the last freeze today and decided to investigate the "preferences".
Lo and behold at the bottom of the File Handling tab sits a little box "Maximum Size" in the Camera Raw Cache Settings. It was set to 5.0 GB.
I reset it to 15.0 GB and just developed 200 or more images without a freeze or crash.
GOTO Edit>Preferences>File Handling> in the Camera Raw Cache Settings increase the "Maximum Size" to at lease 15 GB.

I have been using Lightroom 2 very heavily for the past three months as I am scanning my lifetime's collection of slides and I use Lightroom to do the final touches. I have processed 3,700 images with no problems. But as of today it is freezing constantly and I am forced to do a soft restart everytime as nothing is responding. Oddly, I was able to access the task manager once this evening and it registered no activity within the computer at all. No processor activity, apps, services, nothing. I could not even shut down the computer with the task manager. Weird! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no change. I think that a Norton update or a Windows update it to blame but that is just my wild guess. I am thinking about permanently uninstalling Lightroom.

  • Lightroom 5.2 freezes when using the spot edit tool with Wacom Intuos 5

    Hi,
I've been using Photoshop 6.x with my Intuos 5 for almost a year and it's been great.  I recently purchased Lightroom 5.2 only to discover that when I use the spot edit tool that it freezes when i use this tool as a brush.  It starts off smooth, but after brushing across my area i want to clone/heal, Lightroom seems to freeze up, and the spot edit tool is unusable.  I can lift my pen off the tablet and a few seconds later Lightroom comes back, but the tablet is basically unusable to me.  The mouse works perfectly fine.
I've read other posts at the end of last year '12, that walks through some regedits and disabling some other tablet functions, but none of those work for me.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks Ed

I solved my own issue.  I saw an article @ http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?19694-Spot-removal-tool-doesn-t-work-with-Wa com-Intuos-5-in-LR-5 that solved my issue.
    Step 1:
    Walcom Tablet Properties
    Step 2:
Click on Customize and change the default line graph from this:
    Step 3:
    To this
    Step 4:
    Click OK.
After that, my spot edit tool stopped freezing in LR 5.2 while i was using my intuos 5 pen.
Prior to doing this, I also did the procedure listed here:  http://forum.wacom.eu/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8036
So it's possible that both need to be done in order for the freezing to stop.  I hope this can help others.

  • Random 30 Second Freeze-ups, Beach-ball terror.

I've been having these random anywhere from 30 to 60 Seconds freeze-ups. The symptom is the cursor turns to a beach-ball/spinner and any hard-drive access in any application is blocked. This becomes more apparent when the reading/writing from HD is frequent like when watching iTunes video or browsing (because of caching).
The quick search on the inter-webs point to a possible cause and a solution. The cause to the problem being the new EFI 1.7 uncrippling the SATA to 3GB speeds. And the solution is to downgrade your EFI to 1.6. This does seem to solve the freeze-ups. The question is: when is the OFFICIAL acknowledgment of the problem and a fix is coming?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • S12 freeze-ups with Firefox

I am experiencing random but recurrent freeze-ups using Firefox - to the point where the only thing that works is holding down the power button.
The machine is a VIA-based S12, factory-installed XP, to which I have added 1 GB of 667 MHz RAM salvaged from my wife's Asus (to upgrade her RAM I had to remove and replace the existing DIMM, so I simply transferred it to the Lenovo).
The scenario is always the same. A page loads and I scroll downwards using either the keyboard or mouse (using the scroll bars and mouse buttons, or the mouse wheel ... doesn't mattter). Just as the screen starts to move upwards, the machine freezes completely. The only reaction I ever get is the system "beep" when my frantic efforts to recover end up filling the keyboard buffer.
The weird thing is, if I reboot and reload the same web page - it happens again! On another session I can visit the same web page without incident. I first thought my Firefox installation was at fault. But that doesn't make sense because it's a _portable_ install that I am using without problem on 3 other machines - including some of the web pages that lock up.
I have run Memtest numerous times and no memory errors are ever demonstrated. No other apps cause this type of lockup. Other web browsers (IE, opera), image editing, video playback.Just scrolling down using Firefox.Event log shows no ocurrences that correspond to the freezes.
Besides using another browser ... any ideas? I am leaning towards a video driver bug but see no reports of such being identified in this model.

If it's only happening in Firefox my feeling would be the problem lies in Firefox and not your machine. Have you tried completely uninstalling and then re-installing it?

  • Random freeze ups.  Must reboot each time.

Random full screen lock with no errors reported using the hardware test disc. Mouse can move on screen (arrow or beach ball) but no clicks or key presses of any kind cause a response. The clock freezes instantly as does video playback. Audio dies altogether (or starts looping) within a few seconds of freeze-up but not quite instantly like screen (except mouse cursor) does. The only way out is by holding power key for 3-4 seconds until MacBook Pro shuts off. Force quit popup box never comes with commandoptionesc. Even right now I'm holding my breath that I can post this before the next occurrence since it has become a daily event.
This just started about 30 days ago. Never had this happen in Tiger but probably unrelated. My thing is that I'm out of warranty by self-upgrading the internal hard drive awhile back. Hoping someone can help with a diagnosis. At first thought maybe it was time machine or boot camp causing the freeze ups, but I ruled them out. Although left and right fans almost always stay at 1k RPM, I'm now wondering if maybe there's a heat issue or video card (ATI) issue - but those are really just guesses. I've done a clean install and recovered only some files back from time machine. I've done a PMU reset and tried the factory ram only. Nothing seems to work, plus booting from the hardware test shows no hardware errors. Booting from leopard to run fix disk and permissions also did nothing. Keeping in mind that I've voided my warranty can anyone suggest next steps? I'm not great at understanding console messages but nothing seems to show in logs at exact time of freeze up that I can tell. For the record Software updates says I'm current including firmware stuff too. Never had an issue like this since OS 7 when multi-finder was introduced. This is making me nuts, so if you'll indulge me, here are my machine specs...

I think the fan defaults to 1,000 rpms. Only thing I've found that seems to help is keeping the fan speeds at about 3,000 rpms. No more freeze ups (except one) when I keep the fan speed up a bit.

  • How do I just remove the current update to 3.6.12 and go back to an earlier version as I can not take the continual freeze ups ever few mins.? If this continues I will remove Firefox totally and switch to another browser I can not take this anymore.

I can NOT take the continual freeze ups of my entire browser even worse when updating a page let alone just opening email. I closed the browser and have had to use even just microsoft or Google since this Firefox has gotten so horrible...
I clear my history and my cache so many times a day I can not keep track anymore and that is insane to have to do it as many times as I am even worse that it does not help in the least!
I have used Firefox for years now but if I have to remove it and switch to a different one by the days end I will and I will post in Facebook to all my friends who I had switch to Firefox what and why though some have already just switched to other browsers.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

  • Windows Vista Business 32 freeze-ups

I own a Lenovo T61 with these specs:  T7500 (2.2Ghz) Centrino VPro, 4Gb RAM, 160Gb 5400 rpm HD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11 agn wireless, Bluetooth, Fingerprint reader, 1Gb ethernet, Intel Turbo Memory, 14.1 in. widescreen.
I keep getting computer freeze-ups.  There is no rhyme or reason to these freeze-ups.  It happens when I'm on the Lenovo advanced mini-dock or when I'm not on the advanced mini-dock and just using the laptop by itself.  I can be working on a file on the computer or logged onto the Internet and the computer will just randomly freeze up.  If I right-click on the toolbar below and try to click on Task Manager, nothing happens.  If I try to click on the Start button, nothing happens.  If I do a Ctrl-Atl-Del, nothing happens.  I end up having to do a hard shutdown and restart in order to get back into Windows.  This happens at least four or five times a week, and has been doing that since I bought this laptop.  I purchased this computer in May.  I've made sure and kept up on all updates from Microsoft and Lenovo.  They are all current and up to date, but I still get these random freeze-ups.  It's very frustrating.
I'm beginning to think I might have to downgrade back to XP Pro (the XP Pro disks were supplied when I purchased the computer), which I really don't want to do if I can help it.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

Oops.  I can't disable it, either.  On to plan B.
On a system without Turbo Memory, Vista would set up a ReadyDrive using the non volatile (NV) cache of the system drive.  My theory is that some application is bypassing the Intel Turbo Memory Controller and attempting to access the unused NV cache of the system drive directly.  You can shut off support for the NV cache in group policy and see if that helps (ReadyDrive remains checked in the Intel Turbo Memory Console application):
Start > Start Search Box > gpedit.msc > Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Disk NV Cache > Turn Off Non Volatile Cache Feature > Enabled >  OK
    Restart and see what happens.

  • Lightroom 4 fatally freezes windows 7 on backup

I have never encountered a program which crashes as severely as this. Lightroom 4 will freeze when backing up (the progress bar is a little more than halfway across) and then takes the entire OS down with it! Cancel will not work. The entire GDI will eventually freeze. Even Task Manager will not work. The only solution is to completely switch off the computer without shutting down. There are NO mainstream programs on Windows that crash with such dire consequences, it is the sort of thing I might expect from some very dodgy developer, not Adobe.
This happens every time I agree to back up, so the only workaround is to set it to "Never" back up.
Because of this, along with the install issue which I have also reported, I have to say I think this software is apalling.
    Windows 7 64 bit Pro, SP1.

Turning off backup of your catalogs is asking for trouble. I tried to do something unusual in LR last week and corrupted everything. Hadn't done a catalog backup for 2 days, so lost 2 days work!
If you have only got your system on a drive to itself, using the free version of Paragon backup&restore only takes about 6 minutes to backup and another 6 minutes to restore it if you decide to do so.  A fresh install of Win7 and LR is only going to take an hour at most, probably 30 minutes. At least it would show you whether LR will run fine in a clean install. Then you can decide whether to restore your old system, or slowly install everything on the new installation. I've just done a clean install of Win8, because simply upgrading win7 to Win8 causes some problems, even though it does keep all your other programs.  You may not even need everything in your current installation, and you certainly can't use it all at once. So it can be done slowly as you need the other programs. And using Paragon backup you can even restore custom presets, actions, workspaces, etc from your current CS6 to a new CS6 install.
If you definitely don't want to do a reinstall, then I would export your current LR catalog to a new one (transfers all good stuff in the catalog, and can leave behind any old stuff from previous versions), uninstall LR, delete all LR preferences files and all other leftover stuff in LR program catalogs and LR user folders, clean LR stuff from the registry, delete the acr cache, delete all previews, previews.db, etc.  and then download a fresh copy of LR 4.3, install it and using the exported catalog (NOT the old one - rename the old one so it can't try using it), recreate your previews, cache, etc. That might do the trick if the corruption is in LR stuff, rather than in your system or other programs.

Lightroom 5 is freezing in the Library module. I can't access folders or import photos!!! HELP!!!

Dont know if this is a new occurrence or very many details but try changing "permissions".
Navigate to the following folder: /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Highlight the Lightroom folder and chose File > Get Information
Under Sharing & Permission, verify that your have Read & Write Privileges. If not, click the padlock icon at the lower right, enter your password when prompted, then click the Read only entry and select Read & Write.

  • Lightroom 2.6 freezes a lot

I am using LR2.6 with a catalog of about 39000 pictures, on a 64-bit W7 machine with 12g memory.  I keep everything in DNG, and export to JPG as needed.  The catalog keeps freezing up, and won't let me do anything, sometimes for several minutes at a time.  It opens again and is ok for a little while and then it freezes again, sometimes with one or more white panels and a notification that "Lightroom has stopped responding."  Sometimes it will go a long time without that happening, other times it is every few seconds.

I think part of the key is to optimize the catalog regularly every couple of days.
Whatever the magic is, somehow the problem seems to have disappeared in
    my workflow.  I have a catalog of 40,000 DNG pictures, a W7 64-bit, 12g
RAM, quad core and tons of internal and external HD space.  I have three
LaCie 2TB external drives, on USB, one of which contains all the DNG
files in my catalog.  I backup  and optimize the catalog
every few days, which I guess must be the key to something.  Other than
that, I cannot think of anything I am doing that is much different from
what I have always done, but somehow things are working smoothly at the
moment.  Knock wood.  I hope things improve for you as they did for me,
but there are still plenty of mysteries.  Maybe Adobe will sneak in some
fixes in their updates (without ever admitting that there were
significant problems in the first place!) and things will keep getting
    better.

Subject: Lightroom 2.6 freezes a lot
I am having a very similar issue with very similar computer.  50,000 images in catalog,  i7 920 cpu, 12GB ram, Windows 7 x64.
LR is freezing all the time between 5 and 50 minutes of use.  driving me nuts!
I thought I had some bad RAM so I ran memtest86+ for 24hrs and it checked out OK.
I thought it was my RAID array so i ran integrity checks and it came out OK.
I went back to thinking it was RAM and removed all but 2 sticks and tried to re-import my images (thinking maybe also corrupt catalog) and it would freeze at around 11000 images.  Swapped RAM for another pair and it happened again.
Then I thought it was a memory leak in LR2.6 so I put all my RAM back and re-imported my images and it was successful and has been running for 3 days straight with no freezes.
so all i think I did was change the order of the RAM (and re-seat it)
Anyone figure out what the actual cause and resolution is?

It did say "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair" and "Invalid volume free block count (It should be 815187 instead of 814946)" and "The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."
"Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
    "1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair"
What should I do to fix this problem? Thanks.

If you can't find anyone with the right install disks but (depending on the size of your startup volume) you can get your hands on an external drive of some kind you might want to try using CarbonCopyCloner to clone your basic system to it, selecting it as your boot volume in system preferences, booting from it, and then repairing your internal drive using Disk Utility from the cloned install.
It's definitely not the most elegant solution, especially since you would essentially be attempting to fix a corrupted volume with a corrupted volume, but it might be worth a shot in your case due to the limited availability of your install disk.
    Just a thought.

  • Can the battery cause freeze ups/ beach balls?

    Hello all,
Recently bought a newertech batt replacement that I saw referenced on here and at first all was good. After a day or so though the computer would lock up with browser open and not come back from sleep. The cursor would disappear.
I am wondering if the battery could cause this since it occurred occasionally after it went to sleep (Screensaver)? Perhaps I didn't calibrate the battery correctly?
I did a hardware test with the disk that comes with ibook and all parts passed including new hard drive, although disk permissions won't repair - gets stuck.
    thanks,
    Al

There may be some other hardware issues at play in
your computer; a new battery if properly calibrated
and the other aspects of the general system are good,
    the machine should work.
Have you tried starting the computer in SafeBoot,
then try Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions'
and then restart normally? Also, if you can't get
'disk permissions' to work, boot from the installer
disc and use that Disk Utility; also 'repair disk.'
Have you used a widget to see if the battery specs
are in the good range, and if it is getting charged
when other indications say that it is? iStat is a good
one. Also Sys Profiler can tell you a thing or two.
A proper reset of the PMU may help, if the issue
is related to charging, power, battery life, etc.
A too full hard disk drive with inadequate free space
for the system to function, and inadequate space for
virtual memory, could cause freeze-ups hangs and
other issues. This would be more likely & critical.
Look into Activity Monitor and see how all things
    stack up. Free space vs full space; RAM vs demand;
virtual memory, CPU use, network activity, etc.
You replaced the hard disk drive? Damaged a cable?
Could be if there are read-write errors, the ATA
controller chip on the logicboard may be suspect.
    Preventative maintenance and general housekeeping
are like troubleshooting in advance; since you know
the last time several recommended things were done.
How many places did you ask the same questions, btw?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Windows 8.1 user with multiple external drives. Lightroom CC 2015 freezes on import. Need to have Lightroom recognize only a single drive.

I see that Adobe still hasn't fixed this issue where Lightroom freezes up during import when a system has multiple external drives attached. Disappointing.
A friend suggested that I configure Lightroom to only recognize the single external drive where I save my RAW files. I haven't been able to find out where in Lightroom's settings to do this.
Currently the only folders I have in Lightroom are my local C disk and my external drive with the RAW files, (K), where I do all my editing.
Can anyone offer advice on how I can either do what my friend suggested or find another way of dealing with/solving this issue? Currently Lightroom is almost unusable for me since I cannot add new files on my K drive to develop.
    Thanks.

I save edited images from Photoshop into a new folder on the same hard drive my catalog is on, then attempt to import, or to right-click on the edited image and choose Open in Lightroom. Lightroom hangs in either situation.

  • Solved\ Random lockups/system freezes AMD 6850 crossfire mode

    Hello all,
I have come to these forums because i have a problem for 4 months now and i cant seem to figure out.
    First my systemspecs:
Asrock X79 extreme 4 slot 2011 (Bios version 2.0 (latest))
    Intel i7 3820
    16 Gig Geil 1600 DDR 3 memory (4 dimms)
2 x MSI R6850 Cyclone Power Edition/OC (crossfire mode with bridge)
    1 x OCZ agility 3 SATA III 2.5" SSD 120GB (System drive)
    2 x Samsung HDD 500GB 7200rpm
    TG600-BZ 600 Watt maxx 24 amps
    Running Windows 7 64bit
    Catalyst 12.6
    12.7 CAP1
    So my problem:
When i have 2 cards inserted in crossfire mode my system goes true random lock ups and freezes. Up to several times a day.
While heavy load and gaming i sometime hear the system hang for a few seconds (sounds hangs system freezez) and then it continues to run.. usually that happens about 5-6 times before the system hangs locks up and does not respond anymore.. (i can hear the sounds hanging) and have to do a reset.
I had a few BSOD's getting the well know ATIKMPAG.sys error but that happen only twice.
Funny thing is that it does not always does this while under heavy load but also while doing YouTube video's.. even had one while cooking dinner.. (computer not in use).
    Seems to be completely random.
So what have i done to fix the problem:
I have done a complete clean install of windows 7 only running basic drivers and hardware.. problem persists
Check system event log on any problems but since it does sudden lockups there are no logs of these hardware events.
Did a check on my power saving options in windows.. made sure all were on performance.
I have run true Catalyst 12.1 to 12.6 and all kinds of cap's.. problem persists
Checked temp, does not come above 70 degrees Celsius.  (case temp not above 30)
Made sure i run the latest BIOS version of my motherboard.
Run a 24 hours memory test with memtest86+ no errors.
Did a heavy load and MSI burn in test on the single cards separately from each other continues to run perfectly.
I have run both cards separately from each other in my system (single card mode) for 2 weeks...(both PCIE slots) system runs like a charm.. no lockups no random freezes.
So i hope anyone can help me, i have some experience troubleshooting computer problems but this one has me baffled.

This is indeed the Tagan piperock 600 watt. Problem is that i have no idea how much amp my cards are pulling from 1 rail.. are they trying to pull it all from 1 rail? or are they getting power from 2 different rails. If my crossfire setup is pulling al his power from 1 rail i still have a problem..
Also i read in the review (my german is rusty but ok, tnx xmad) that when turbo mode is enabled that all rails work as one rail.. so 80 amp is available? Is this even possibly?
My new PSU will arrive today so i will report tomorrow if it has solved the issue or not.
No, as noted in my last reply for your PSU: "48A combined total for +12V rails". Max for any individual 12V rail is 20A. If three of the rails are loaded to total of 48A then the 4th is useless. You can't just add up 20+20+20+20 & come up with 80, it doesn't work that way on PSU although Antec seems to think so.
