[SOLVED]Lock screen in Gnome freezes X

Hi, everyone. When the screen locks on my laptop it freezes the entire X. It tries to dim the screen before the lock and in the middle of the process it freezes. The desktop stays "half visible". The mouse works, but Gnome doesn't react to anything. I need to enter the init 3 level and go back to 5. This is really annoying since it makes it impossible to work normally and I have to constantly think about not locking the screen.
This is my VGA controller according to lspci:
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
I tried to check for errors in .xssession-errors but it is impossible to find anything of importance there since it's full of davmail errors etc.
I've searched the forums but only found some issues regarding old kernel versions and I'm on the latest (3.4.4-2).
Any ideas?

I'm experiencing the same issues, on a desktop, since this morning.
I have an NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 440] (rev a1)  (as stated by lspci), and I have all the new updates for nouveau, X, and libdrm. I had my PC up for a long time and had to reboot, so I'm not sure which kernel I was running before I started having this issue, but I'm on 3.4.4-2-ARCH now. I suspect it was from the update from 3.3.8 to 3.4.4.
Is rolling the kernel back a good idea? Thanks for any help.
I'm not sure if kernel downgrade would help you since we still haven't identified the problem (we don't know if it's kernel related). But you could try and get back to us with the results...

  • Lock screen on GNOME 3 [solved]

    Hello,
Since a few days, I'm not able to lock my screen (ctrl+l, menu > lock-screen, after suspend).
    Any idea ?
    Thank you

    Yes, it doesn't work.
Screen lock only works when you suspend through GNOME's status menu. If you suspend or hibernate using the power button, your screen is not locked after resume. The problem is a configuration failure in dconf.
For me it is never locked.
Except lock-use-screensaver, all the configurations lock-* are at true. Is it correct ?

  • Lock screen in gnome 3.2

Before the upgrade the upgrade to gnome 3.2 the following feature was working ok: whenever the laptop lid is closed the system suspends to RAM, whenever the laptop lid is opened up, the system resumes and the screen is locked. The screen lock feature was only enabled after
    gsettings set org.gnome.power-manager lock-use-screensaver 'false'
    (as per wiki instructions)
After the upgrade to gnome 3.2, the lock screen feature is not available anymore. I have checked the keys available in  org.gnome.power-manager and lock-use-screensaver does no appear anymore. As a matter of fact, lock-use-screensaver does not appear anywhere. This means that either something has gone wrong with my update, or this feature has been removed in the new gnome version. Anyone else observes the same?

There is a switch in >System Settings > Screen
    Is that not sufficient?

  • Can't Lock Screen in Gnome

I've installed xscreensaver and gnome-screensaver but I still can't lock the screen in Gnome.  There's a keyboard binding of CTRL+ALT+L to lock the screen and also a menu entry under System but neither of them work, they don't throw an error message or anything.  lock_enabled is enabled in gconf-editor as well.  Any ideas?

Never mind, restarting the X server did the trick.

  • (SOLVED) Lock screen suddenly doesn't work as expected

It doesn't matter which lock screen (PIN, swipe, etc.) I choose, after the first unlock (after a reboot or change of lock screen), the phone no longer locks. Using the power button to lock doesn't work and I have the phone set to lock right away on sleep. It was working fine a few hours ago and there wasn't anything new I did to the phone.
    Any ideas?

Hello, I feel pretty dumb. I must've hit the "Disable lock screen" option in the BatteryBot Pro app by accident...I forgot it even had that option.
If anyone's curious how I solved this, I inspected system messages using OS Monitor while reproducing the problem (ie, flipping through lock screen options and turning off/on the screen) and kept seeing the app's name coming up as well as a few others. I'm not sure why it started disabling the lock screen today though; I'm pretty sure I didn't touch the app in the last couple days.
    Anyway, sorry for any inconvenience.

  • Bug: Lock screen / Simple PIN freezes up (Pre 2, webOS 2.0.1)

    Hi,
I have a Palm Pre 2 (North America, unlocked) and have experienced the same bugs in the lock screen with both version 2.0.0 and 2.0.1:
When the Simple PIN secure unlock is activated, and the phone is left alone for a while, the next time an unlock is attempted the normal Simple PIN cloudy background is shown but without any number pad or other controls on top of it!! A simple turn-off-turn-on of the screen is usually enough to fix it. But it is still annoying enough that I have disabled Simple PIN for this sole reason.
IMHO such a basic feature needs to be better tested and fixed ASAP. Bugs like this cannot make it into the Verizon version of the Pre 2 if it is to be successful (and if people such as myself are to feel comfortable recommending it).
On a related note, I feel like it is rather counterintuitive that the Simple PIN requires an entire second lock screen... Why not just replace the normal lock screen with the Simple PIN (when Simple PIN is active)? Or better yet, make a cool sliding pattern unlock like on Android--seems a lot nicer not to have to lift your finger from the screen....
Thanks for listening and of course, for making an awesome OS!!!
Post relates to: Pre 2 p102una (Unlocked NA)

I have this problem, as well. I have an unlocked Pre 2 running 2.1.0 on AT&T. I can't pinpoint when the issue arose, because I only noticed it when I went in to delete a bookmark one day. I got this phone in June (this year) and immediately performed the OTA update. So I think this happened over time...not as a result of the OS update process itself. Like, maybe after so many bookmarks were saved or after so many web pages were added to the Launcher or something.
Update - I just went ahead and selected "Clear Bookmarks" which reset the Bookmarks list and the Launcher. Now, it's working again.

  • [SOLVED] gnome-screensaver bug? unintended lock screen behaviour

Everytime I close my laptop lid, the screen locks. I am fine with this EXCEPT when I am using two screens. I watch movies with my laptop and I like to close the lid because it blocks my reciever from getting the signal from my remote to change the volume. With gnome 3.4, I have not been able to do this unless I disable lock screen completely.
    [conner@arch-laptop ~]$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power active true
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power button-hibernate 'hibernate'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power button-power 'suspend'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power button-sleep 'hibernate'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power button-suspend 'suspend'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power critical-battery-action 'hibernate'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power idle-brightness 30
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power idle-dim-ac false
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power idle-dim-battery true

    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power notify-perhaps-recall true
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power percentage-action 2
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power percentage-critical 3
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power percentage-low 10
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power priority 1
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-display-ac 600
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-display-battery 600
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-timeout 0
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-ac-type 'suspend'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-timeout 0
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power sleep-inactive-battery-type 'suspend'
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power time-action 120
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power time-critical 300
As you can see in the middle of this code block that closing the lid is supposed to do nothing but that is not the case. What I want is for the screen to lock when I close my laptop lid only if there is one screen or not at all. I could disable the lock screen completely through gsettings but that is not what I want either. Any help would be much appreciated and no I do not want to use xscreensaver

bump. any ideas. has this bug already been reported?
Edit: Found a way to fix this. Go into brightness and screen, then change lock off when screen turns blank. So basically, changing laptop lid close in gnome tweak tool or in gsettings to nothing doesn't matter since in the brightness and lock, the setting is to lock screen whenever it is turned off and obviously the screen is turned off since closing the lid does on just about every laptop. Marking as solved.

iphone 5 freezes on lock screen

I reset my phone everytime my phone freezes but did not do the following steps. I will try and let you know. Thing to note here is, this never happened before ios7. I also noticed, freezing often happens with a bunch of "whatsapp" messages showing up on my locked screen. I have disabled that feature to see if it solves the problem. Thanks for taking time to reply.

    Hi theora,
If you haven't already done so, does restarting or resetting the iPhone help the issue?

  • My lock screen keeps freezing ios 7.1

    Hi guys,
I want to know if I am alone in this issue or if it is widespread?
Since updating my iphone 5 to ios 7.1 my lock screen freezes. Not all the time, mainly if there is a notification of a text etc. I have to turn the phone off and on and it sorts it but it shouldn't be happening surely?
Am I alone in this? My touchscreen was fine until after the update.

Have you tried restarting the phone or reset all settings?

Ever since I updated my 4s to the ios 7.0.2 the phone constantly freezes on the lock screen. In just one day it froze at least more than 6 times and made me reset many times using the power and home button just to unlock the phone.  Is there a permanent fix for this please help!!!

I tried restore backup but it says that itunes could not restore the iPhone 4s because not enough free space is available on the iPhone.. I did it twice but it kept giving me this message. Should I go ahead and restore as new?

  • [SOLVED] KDE Plasma 5 | Lock Screen Issues

Everytime my computer locks - whether it be manually or automaticly, I get this lock menu with 3 options. The first option has my username and my avatar, which prompts me for my password. Everytime I type in the correct password, the screen turns black and then reloads the lock screen. Which makes it impossible for me to log back into my session leaving me unable to leave my computer on ever. I can create a new Session from the same menu but when ever I do create a new Session after being locked out, not a single app will launch. And I know I am putting in the correct password because when I purposly put in an incorrect password; the screen doesn't turn black, it just gives me a diffrent prompt. Another issue I am facing with KDE at the moment is about 80% of the time when I shut down my computer, I get a crash report from most of the applications running, for expamle kwin. I'm only saying this incase it is relevant, it is annoying but at least it doesn't prevent me from getting work done. Also, I used KDE's suggested SDDM for login.

Oh, that really sucks, I like to use Arch for gaming on Linux so i dont think either of those sound preferable, but I think I will just try to downgrade nvidia then. Gnome atcually has worse issues with the latest nvidia drivers which sucks as well. Thank you for finding this.

  • GNOME 3.2.1 login promt from the lock screen is ugly.

The lock screen doesn't look nice... have i miss configured something?
What i mean is that i don't get something like the nice login screen from GDM ... but i get a password promt similar to the old style GDM....
Any ideas? is that the expected behaviour?
    Thanks!
    Juan.

It's the expected behaviour, but there is an upstream task to change this: https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointThree/ … ScreenLock
