[SOLVED]Lose Conky window shadows...

I have Xfce set to display shadows under windows, which looks great until I run Conky.  Any tips on how I can get rid of Conky's shadow and keep the rest?

You most likely can solve this with the correct combination of the own_window and own_window_type parameters in your .conkyrc file. While I don't use XFCE I believe this problem is the same under most compositors. Try the following to solve the problem:
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type desktop
If this doesn't work, you might try using "override" for the own_window_type.
Good luck,

    Hello. I'm having some problems making my desktop how I want it. My window manager is fluxbox.
    First problem is just a minor inconvenience, but annoying. When I login, a transparent terminal spawns to my specification, but it is skewed.
    http://i.imgur.com/hrEEh3H.jpg
    However, as soon as I open any window it fixes itself
    http://i.imgur.com/WXQZ9e3.jpg
    Second problem is that I can't figure out how to remove the shadow under conky. I know that it is coming from the slit, but it just won't go away. I can get it to go away if I set conky to desktop instead of panel, but then when I launch any window it overlaps with the conky bar, and that is unaceptable. Maybe there is a fluxbox configuration option that reserves some space so nothing can overlap it? But I couldn't find anything.
    Here are the config files I think are relevant:

    using lowercase conky in compton doesn't change anything. I'm pretty sure that shadow is not from conky, but from the slit. When I set the slit to autohide in the init file, the shadow hides as well. And there is no shadow in any other conky window type I've tried, except type panel. Unfortunately, it is the only one so far with the behavior I want.
    I would like to use true transparency in urxvrt, since that does solve the skew issue and I think it looks better. However, in doing so the terminal is quite useless since there is a lot of text that I can't see, because the font becomes the same color as certain backgrounds. Unless there is a way to separate it? I want it to look like the one on the left (left = fake transparency, right = true transparency).

  • When I go to Firefox, I lose my Windows "frame". I lose the entire Windows toolbars at the top and bottom of the page.

    When I go to Firefox, Firefox fills the entire screen. I lose all Windows controlls. I tried rebooting. No change. I tried reloading Firefox. No change. To exit Firefox, I have to use the Task Manager. If I go to a link withon a message, I have to exit Firefox to get back from that link.

    #move your cursor to the top edge of the screen
    #toolbars will "slide" down
    #while the toolbars are displayed, move your cursor to a blank area on one of the toolbars and right-click
    #click "Exit Full Screen Mode"

  • [SOLVED] XFCE - Incorrect windows placement

    Hi,
    I'm currently having a issue with XFCE's window placement. In the settings panel, under Window Manager Tweaks > Placement, window placement is set to Center for all windows, but this option has no effect. I tried changing it to place windows under the mouse, but it also has no effect on the windows placement. Windows keep opening on the screen corners.
    I checked the forums for similar problems, and found some results, but none of the solutions worked for me. Also, those are quite old topics.
    [Solved] XFCE - Having Trouble Centering Windows
    [solved] Xfce4, new windows position
    Xfce 4.8 xfwm4 window placement settings no longer have any effect.
    This is not a big problem, but I'm kind of picky, so if anyone knows a solution to this problem, please share it.
    Best Regards,

    Agkel0s wrote:Currently the slider is on the minimum value, and windows of all sizes should open centered on screen.
    Shouldn't you actually have it on the maximum value?
    I believe the way this works is that the size (or ratio, the option is actually called placement_ratio IIRC and is a ratio of window size vs screen size) you specify here is the minimum to trigger "smart placement." If the window isn't (at least) of that size, then the default (i.e. center or under mouse pointer, as defined below) will be used. So if you want every window to use the default placement, you should set the minimum size for smart placement to be as large as possible. (In fact, I believe with a ratio set to 100 (i.e. slider to the max) it should always use the default placement, regardless of window size, which is want you're after if I'm not wrong.)
    If even with the slider to the max you get new windows placed using smart placement, then it sounds like a bug I'd say.
    (Also, just as FYI and though you might simply want all windows to be centered, I wasn't happy with xfwm's smart placement myself, you can see this topic for a (IMO) better alternative.)

  • Safari Window Shadow

    I recently got a program called WallPaper Wizard. It change my desktop picture to literally thousands of different backgrounds. Some of the backgrounds are white with a single picture in the center. That is when I noticed something about my Safari window, it has lost it's shadow! All the rest of my windows have shadows and I can clearly see the edge on the white background of those desktops. But my Safari window does not have the shadow which makes somethings at the edge problematic.
    I checked Safari Preferences, System Preferences, and Secrets to see if any deal with the window shadow. I could not find anything.
    Is this the same for everyone? Or can someone help me get the Shadow back on Safri??

    Does it do the same thing if you remove WallPaper Wizard and just select a white background?

  • Window Shadows are STRONG

    Is it me, or are the shadows that windows create when moved over another window stronger (wider) than in Tiger? I had a blank/white screen in Safari, then moved my finder window over the top, and the shadow look like some out of control aura or halo. It was very strong. Is there a way to tone down the window shadows?

    If the machine is less than 90 days old or you have already purchased AppleCare then call AppleCare immediately. If it's not covered by AppleCare make an appointment at your local Apple Store or AASP. Things you can try are:
    1. Resart in Safe Mode
    2. Do a SMC and PRAM reset,
    3. Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If no error codes appear the first time, run it 2-3x. This will take some time,  possibly up to 40-60 minutes on each pass.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • [SOLVED!] Conky won't run undecorated, please assist.

    Greetings,
    As suggested in my other thread, I have been working on customizing a conky script that simply shows the time, date, calendar, current weather, and forecast, and I have completed it.
    However I have ran into a problem. Up until I basically had it completed, it would run fine undecorated without any window borders and the like. But now it won't, and it laughs at me instead. If I want to see my conky, I have to have it decorated in the window border, which is a pain and something I don't want. I want it to simply blend in with my desktop.
    Anyways, I am hoping someone can help me solve this. I know it runs. If I set it to decorate, it pops up, info and all. If I set it to undecorate, it laughs at me, but shows up lxtask and htop.

    Yes that works! Thanks!
    About the widget; I used Sid's conky script from the conky screenshot as my base, it was the first conky I had tried. Though I only ended up keeping the forecast portion after editing it massively...
    I think it must have been the own_window_hints throwing me off.

  • [SOLVED]Getting Conky to display Chinese

    How do I get my conky to display Chinese? I have some Chinese songs and the mpd thing in conky just shows the artist's names as boxes. I have scim pinyin installed, by the way.
    Also, on pypanel, it won't display the chinese fonts as well, though it displays the words correctly on the sonata program and title itself.

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
    Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
    so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
    Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • [solved]printing from Windows 7 to ArchLinux server.

    I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … er_sharing
    but cannot recognizing my printer from Windows 7 machine. I have added the workgroup in smb.conf but i don't know if  should i put the password and where, i can go from w7  to archLinuxhost:631 and send a test page to print, but i cannot add to  w7 the  printer.

    solved follow the steps from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CU … er_sharing
    then go to localhost:631 and share the printer,
    next go to the w7 machine and browse in the navigator archLinuxMachineIP:631 and copy the URL for the printer in printers tabs,
    then add on w7 this url and select the driver.
    you have to add a address reservation in your router to the machine with the printer,

  • [Solved]Translucent Conky through transset?

    So I'd like to set up conky to have a translucent background, like in this screenshot
    http://img168.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … setwj2.jpg
    My solution thus far was starting transset through autostart.sh and then clicking on conky to make it transparent.  There has to be a better way to do this, but I've not come across a setting in conky that lets me do it.  I'm also running a script to change my background, so editing all the walls I have isn't an easy solution.  Is there a way to get transset to automatically set a window's transparency or does anyone have a better solution?
    Thanks

    Completely OT, but that's another thing I miss about AmigaOS: "foo ?" printed out the arguments "foo" expected, and what type (string, integer, switch...) they should be, even if the coder hadn't bothered to include a help option. In *nix, "-h" or "--help" has to be explicitly coded, and some things don't have it. More than three years on, I still find myself typing things like "transset-df ?" by mistake.
    I'll shut up now. I'm just hacked off because I could have answered the OP's question, but you lot got in before me.

  • How can I replace the window shadows with a simple border?

    Is there any way to change the shadow that's between windows with a simple 1px border?
    When using multiple windows the shadow makes it hard to read the text in the "lower" window and removing the shadow using ShadowKiller removes the shadow entirely making it impossible to see the difference between 2 windows.

    yes  i can found the words's unicode form Cmaps where may be at the type of tounicde and another Cmaps table just like "Adobe-GB1-GBK-EUC" ,but when the word dont have either of them how can i do? when i write a chinese word "一",it just the winansi encoding ,  there is not Cmap for me to use to change the "G208f" to the word "一"'s unicode value.
                   best wishes      thank you very much

  • Adobe AIR HTML Application with Window Shadow

    I have been building a HTML based AIR application that uses a transparent window. I want the window to have a drop-shadow effect which using a combination of JavaScript and CSS3 I make the shadow change depending on window focus.
    The application looks like the following (wireframe diagram):
    The red area is the <html> container itself. The blue box is the application content area (a simple <div>) and the black border with green shadow is a container <div> that is positioned absolute on the page. This black container is the application itself in my design.
    As you can see the black border (around the blue box) has a subtle green shadow in the outer edges of the <html> page.
    The problem is that because the <html> is the application in AIR it means that the application can never touch the edge of the screen due to the fact that AIR is treating the <html> as the application edge rather than the container <div> for the black border.
    Any ideas on how to get around this? The only thing I could think of was some crazy JavaScript that could offset the application somehow.... Anyone else had this problem?

    I use this function to center the window on the screen. Could I use any parts of this to perhaps always offset the window to handle the spacing around the chrome div?
    function centerWindow(instance){
                        //default bounds of nativeWindow
                        var applicationBounds = instance.nativeWindow.bounds;
                        //determine which screen we're located on
                        var screens = air.Screen.getScreensForRectangle(instance.nativeWindow.bounds);
                        var screenBounds = (screens.length > 0) ? screens[0].visibleBounds : air.Screen.mainScreen.visibleBounds;
                        //get initial position
                        x = (screenBounds.width - applicationBounds.width) / 2;
                        y = (screenBounds.height - applicationBounds.height) / 2;
                        //adjust for offset x or offset y (multi monitors)
                        x = screenBounds.x + x;
                        y = screenBounds.y + y;
                        instance.nativeWindow.x = x;
                        instance.nativeWindow.y = y;

  • [SOLVED] snapshot of window in KDE

    Hello.
    How do I make a snapshot of window in KDE by a keyboard shortcut? I tried Alt+PrintScreen and it doesn't work. By PrintScreen I can capture the fullscreen (by Ksnapshot), but I don't know how to capture a window by the shortcut...
    Anyone can help me?
    Thanks a lot!

    Well, in fact I changed the command in KDE Control Panel (Shortcuts and gestures) → Own shortcuts → Preset Actions → and on the right on the Action card, I modified the command to: ksnapshot --current.
    Now it snapshot only a current window, not the whole desktop after pressing the PrintScreen. Problem solved :-)
