[SOLVED] Lost my text console

After the last full upgrade yesterday, something odd has happened to my console.  I don't use any kind of gdm; I boot (with nomdeset) to a text-only console and then run startx if/when I'm ready for GUI stuff.  When I want a larger, full-screen font or just avoid the clutter of a desktop, I'll ctrl-alt-F{x} to a non-GUI console.  When I'm ready to reboot, I quit out of fluxbox and do so.
All of a sudden, once I start xorg the text consoles are gone.  ctrl-alt-F1 takes me to a blank screen; if I exit out of xorg entirely there are no visible consoles anywhere and I have to blindly ctrl-alt-del to reboot.  It's not a crippling problem -- I can do whatever I want through xterm -- but it's annoying.
graphics card is an onboard Radeon 6530; using the arch implementation of the catalyst driver (catalyst-hook).  Has anyone else seen this happen?

Ah, found the answer over in the Catalyst thread of the bar&grill forum:
I got workaround from one of the bug reports in the unofficial site :  just pass vga=... (say vga=792 ) to kernel from grub
This fixed it for me

  • Black screen is in interactive and interactive text (console) mode

I want to install Solaris 10 on HP Proliant DL380 G5. After installing drivers for Smart Array (from CPQary3.iso) I can't see this:
"Starting Solaris Interactive (graphical user interface) Installation.
You must respond to the first question within 30 seconds or the installer
proceeds in a non-window environment (console mode)".
The screen now is black in both modes: interactive and interactive text (console)
If I don't install CPQary3 then graphical user interface works good, but "No disks found" :)
What can I do with it?

  • Text Console Resolution

Hi, i have a problem ... how can i change text console resolution for ex. 1024x768 ?? I tried add vga=792 in grub kernel entry (like in RHEL) but it doesn't work. Can somebody help me ??

Hmm, i'm not sure if you can do that. On SPARC i think you can change it by editing the output-device variable in the OBP (even if i don't remember if that affects the text console). I'm not certain if its possible on an x86 platform.

To do the kind of thing you are talking about you will need to implment a Java Bean in your form listen for the changes. Take a look at KeyEvent Java Bean or the Oracle Forms PJCs-Java Beans web site for more information and examples.
    Hope this helps,

  • Keyboard lag in plain text console

    Hi everybody!
I'm experiencing a strange keyboard lag on both of my two machines, but only in plain text console.
Both consoles uses framebuffer (in 1024x768 and 800x600 modes). There are kernel26, Xorg 7.0 and Xfce 4.2 on both machines. No special fb driver used (eg. no nvidiafb or vesa-tng).
One PC uses nv, another - nvidia driver. In X everything is OK.
    Has anyone the same problem?

    hi,
I have this problem, too, but it only appears on my virtual console #1, if I switch to 2,3, ... it works as it should.
    Used kernel: arch 2.6.17-beyond
    menu.lst entry:
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26beyond root=/dev/hda6 ro

  • [Solved] Gnome-shell text turned to rectangles after botched upgrade

    Hi all,
I've run into a problem that I just can't solve, so I was wondering if somebody with a lot of expertise could help out. My system has a couple of stability issues; it freezes up every few days, and I have to make a hard reboot (I think it's related to the video card, but I haven't had the funds to go get a better one yet). The last time it froze was during a pacman upgrade, and I had to reboot. At the new boot, after logging in, all of the gnome-shell letters turned to rectangles (see screenshot), and I had a bunch of other errors. I ran another upgrade Sync with pacman and rebooted; that took care of the errors, but the font problems still remained. The interesting thing is that the gdm window has no problems, I can see the icons on the top right just fine, and the date renders perfectly. It's only when I log in when the blocks occur, and they only occur on gnome-shell panel text (and on everything under Activities).
I have a 32-bit system that's fully migrated to systemd with open source radeon drivers. Here's some output of journalctl for the current boot, with stuff unrelated to the gnome-shell display removed (e.g. NetworkManager, UFW, etc). However, I didn't find any new errors compared to logs from before the upgrade.

I tried using gnome-tweak tool to fiddle around with the fonts, but that didn't help, none of the fonts would render correctly. Cantarell, which I'm assuming is the gnome-shell font, is still in /etc/fonts/conf.avail, so I don't think that the font file itself went missing. I made the fontconfig update a while ago, and that didn't cause any problems.
I also heard that there were problems with xorg-server, so I downgraded xorg-server, pixman, and cairo to their previous versions, but that didn't help either. EDIT: I've also done a pacman -Syyf gnome-shell to try and reinstall gnome-shell. That also didn't work.
I've run out of things to try. If someone else was more familiar with the workings of gnome-shell fonts, or had a better idea of how to debug, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I found that /etc/fonts/conf.avail/31-cantarell.conf existed, but was empty. After doing a pacman -Syyf cantarell-fonts, they went right back to normal!

    Problem disappeared.
I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)

  • Lost my Text icon

I have Blackberry 8900, work just fine but lost text messaging icon and so cannot text. How do i recover my Text Icon back.

    Hey Goberry,
To bring back you text messaging icon, check to see if it is hidden first by pressing the menu key on the home screen and select show all.
If it is still hidden, you may need to reload the software: http://t.co/FRktoq1

  • Blackberry 9330 - Lost My Text Ringtones

Within the past three weeks I've lost the ability to set specific ringtones/text tones for texts from individual contacts. Everything was functioning fine until about three weeks ago; I can set specific ringtones for phone calls, but now the 9330 won't let me set tones for text messages for specific contacts. Anyone have a solution?

  • Did system update--lost all texts and BBM texts

The latest update went smoothly enough, but when my Q10 woke up again, and I reconnected to my email accounts, my whole history of texts and BBM messages were gone! Did this happen to others?
Can anything be done?? Thanks for any help.

I was able to help some other users restore a previous backup to regain their lost SMS history.
I don't know why yours did not restore. Restoring the backup will always result in a need to update passwords as that is simply a security measure and to reinitiate your link to that account. Nothing uncommon there.
I wish I could help you with the lost SMS, but it sounds like you have done exactly what I would have advised you.

I wrote and perodically saved my work from the keyboard using Command-S.
While the document was open, I then changed the file name by clicking on the desktop icon and typing a new name.
Clicking back in the document I saw the new name replace the old one and continued typing.
I typed several thousand words saving as I went along.
I then quit and shut down my computer.
Several hours later I started the computer and double clicked on the desktop icon.
The file opened to the place where I made the name change. The added text, after the name change, was gone.
    Is this text recoverable?
All this work was done on an iBook G3 running MacOS 10.4.6, AppleWorks version 6.2.7
Thank you for your assistance. - Fabe

You did one of two things while this file was open in AppleWorks, renamed the file in the Finder or moved the File in the Finder, that will "break" AppleWorks' connection to the file. Unless you had a program running in the background that records keyboard input, I'm afraid your work is lost & you will have to re-do it. There are two user tips dealing with this:
Dale Gillard - Document content not saved
Vic Menard - AppleWorks fails to save properly

  • [SOLVED] Dead keys on console in UTF-8 locale

    Hello,
I want to share something interesting I found out about dead keys support on the Linux console (i.e., without X).
I live in Canada and use the "Canadian French" keyboard, which uses dead keys for several diacritical marks (e.g., to type ê I push and release the ^ key, then type the e key). It works perfectly under X, but I was unable to type any character using dead keys on the console. On the other hand, non-ASCII characters like "é" that do not use dead keys worked perfectly.
After some googling, I found many posts claiming the kernel did not support dead keys when the console was in Unicode mode. So I changed the locale to a non-UTF-8 setting in /etc/rc.conf, and indeed dead keys started working. But this was not useful to me, since editing UTF-8 files resulted in gibberish, and I did not want to regress back to Latin1 encoding or have to support both encodings. I tried many combinations of settings, but none worked. For a few days, I thought there was no way to have dead keys and Unicode working on the Console.
But then I started to install Arch Linux on another computer and noticed that when I set the keyboard to Canadian French with the "km" utility before installing (the keymap is called "cf"), dead keys worked, even though the locale was Unicode! So there was a way to do it.
I started digging and trying new things, and found out that after the following incantations, I was able to enable dead keys for Unicode on the console:
    kbd_mode -a
    sudo loadkeys cf
    kbd_mode -u
This sets the console to ASCII mode, loads the "cf" keymap, and sets the console back to Unicode. I found it by trial and error, and I have no idea why it works or whether it breaks anything. I'm posting here to ask if there are easier ways to have a functional Canadian French keyboard on the console, and to document what I did in case someone has a similar problem.

I have the exact same issue.
The weird thing for me is that before I was using gentoo and never had a problem with dead keys and unicode. Also, I confirm that dead keys is working when booting from the archlinux installation cd. Either run 'loadkeys cf' rigth after login or pass 'keymap=cf' as a boot parameter to the kernel line by editing it in grub before booting.
Your solution is interesting, however the cf.map.gz file is the same on the installation cd (and on my gentoo system) so it should works without editing it.
In my quest to solve this issue, I found something interesting. I added the 'keymap' hook in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and regenerated the image by issuing
    mkinitcpio -g /boot/kernel26.img
This alone didn't solved the issue, but then I REMOVED the keymap assignation in /etc/rc.conf (i.e. leaving it as
    KEYMAP=
), rebooted... and voilà, it now works.
    Furthermore, now if I run
    sudo loadkeys cf
after login it stops working (well of course because it's the same as defining KEYMAP="cf" in /etc/rc.conf). Issuing the 3 commands of your first post make it works again. OK so I did one more test: boot from the archlinux installation cd by adding the 'keymap=cf' boot parameter to the kernel line and then run 'loadkeys cf' after login to see if it breaks dead keys. But no, it still works.
So is this issue comes from a newer version of the kernel/loadkeys/mkinitcpio/...? How different is the kernel and initramfs images of the installation cd compared to the installed system ?

  • I lost my texts! Can I get them back using Vzw Cloud???

Okay so that basically explains it all but to break it down again.
I recently lost all of my texts; I have no clue how it happened I just need some of them back for business information. I have them all backed up via Verizon Cloud but I don't see a way to sync them back to my phone. Is this an option or am I just missing something? Thanks in advance for the help!

Unfortunately, no, Verizon only keeps messages on their servers for a few days once delivered, and not much longer if they are not received.  Even if they are still on their servers, it takes a court order to get them.
