[SOLVED] LXDE / Evolution: setting default browser?

Hello,
Recently I switched to LXDE coming from Gnome, and clicking an URL in an email doesn't open my browser anymore.
I searched gconf-editor to set my default browser app, and found some references to epiphany (that I changed to firefox), but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.
Anyone?

I think evolution is too much integrated into gnome to be able to  do such a setting in the program itself, maybe it looks into Gnome's defaults, which you cannot set without the configuration tools of gnome.
My recommendations:
Use another mail programm, i.e. claws-mail, which I like pretty much.
Install Gnome (minimal installation), do the settings and uninstall it afterwards or let it on the machine, if it doesn't disturb you.
Yes, it looks like I should switch to another emailprogram, but at the moment I'm tied with hands and feet to evolution, since I'm using webcalendars and LDAP-contacts. Thunderbird + lightning is coming along nicely, but it cannot write to LDAP and claws-mail has calendar-support, but it is slow and the GUI to it is very arcane.
The gnome-settings are stored IIRC in gconf, and I cannot find the right entries
Zl.
/EDIT: thought about it and did a new search in gconf-editor and found out that I still had some references to a test-setup for firefox 3.0beta. This thread can be closed as it is solved. THX for your answers!

  • [Solved]Unable to set default browser

Using XFCE I can set the default browser from settings/Preferred Applications to either google chrome or firefox both of which are installed. I set chrome as preferred and can get online no problem. The setting will stay for sometimes days or maybe a few minutes before the system 'forgets' what preference has been set and reverts to no preference set.
Using thunderbird to open links in emails always opens Firefox despite the default browser being set to chrome. In fact firefox always stays set as default browser under preferences/general and I can have firefox and chrome open at the same time with both claiming they are the default browser. If I set the system preference to firefox then open chrome it detects it is not the default browser and allws me to set it as default, this always seems to set the system preferences to not set so it removes firefox but not not set chrome, if I then open firefox it does not give the message about not being the default but checking in preferences/general it is already set as default.
I seem to be going around in circles for the last few weeks, can someone point me in the right direction?
Last edited by weedfreak (2012-09-23 09:43:11)

Well I had also tried using XFCE Preferred application to set it and that also did not work, there was also an anomaly with the menu entry for Web Browser, it always claimed there was no preference set and I needed to select the session browser from the list.
The link provided was not really a lot of help directly, but it did point out that xdg-open is broken and gave me some directions to search in, eventually I found the ~/.local/applications/mimeapp.list contained a lot of references to firefox that stayed in place even if preferences were changed, they were listed before the chrome entries. I deleted every line with firefox in then when I tried a link from Thunderbird I was asked to choose a browser and the change stuck, the web browser menu link also works correctly.
Not sure if this is really solved or if it is a workaround but I'll mark it solved.

As for DE, I changed  gconf-editor>desktop>gnome>url-handlers>http and https to "opera %s". Nothing happened.
As for Arch itself, i added "opera" here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … lt_browser

  • Problem setting default browser to Firefox

    Hey everyone,
I'm stumped and could use some help. I have set my default browser to Firefox (Safari - preferences - default browser - Firefox.)
Here's the problem: I click on a URL in Mail and get an error message. (Result - clicking the URL won't open Firefox) I go back to Safari and the default is set to "Firefox copy." I only have one Firefox. I cannot find a copy anywhere. Whether I set the default browser with the drop down menu or by choosing "Select - Applications - Firefox" the same thing happens.
I don't have my OS X discs with me though I can go to an Apple Store to reinstall the OS. If there is a less drastic solution, I'd be grateful. (Just spent two days in Apache, MySQL, PHP setup **** and don't want to mess any of that up)
    Thanks
PS Don’t remember the exact error message but it is the same one everybody gets if their default browser is not set up.

    Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear.
There is no "Firefox copy." Safari changes what I choose ("Firefox") to "Firefox copy." Since there is no "Firefox copy" the URL will not open in the nonexistent "Firefox copy" or in the Firefox I do have because it will not stay set as the browser default.
How do I get rid of the "Firefox copy" choice in Safari's default browser dropdown menu? And/or how do I get Safari to leave the default browser choice as "Firefox" (not "Firefox COPY!") Remember there is nothing on my computer called "Firefox copy." It only shows up on the drop down menu when selecting a default browser.

  • Setting default browser for Mail's contextual menu items

I use Firefox as my default browser. In "Safari>General>Default Web Browser" I have it set to Firefox and URL links within Mail trigger Firefox as expected.
However, if I right-click within an email message on some text and select 'Search in Google' it opens in Safari regardless of the default browser indicated in the Safari preferences.
Anybody know how to fix this? It's very annoying.
    Dual 2.0 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I have been searching for the cause of this failure, but have not found much. It may relate to some problems with Contextual Menu Items, discussed within the article at the link below, but I do not know for sure:
    http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/05/28/cm_pt1.html
and may relate to some incompleteness in Firefox, rather than OSX, per se. The contextual menu items are separate from the default preferences, I believe.
Btw, while I like some aspects of a Google search with Firefox, the fact that PDF links are downloaded, rather than opened in the browser, make me prefer Safari for searches. Perhaps there is a preference to cure this problem, but I have not looked very hard for it.

  • Setting default browser in Windows on iMac

I am running Windows XP Pro on my iMac. I want to set it up to open Google Chrome (Mac) when I click a link in my Windows email program. I had that set up before and messed it up. But I can't remember how I did it before.
Can anyone help me get the default browser in Windows to open as Google Chrome for Mac or Safari....either one.
Thanks so much. My email program is Incredimail.

No go. I tried again, and I am back to Safari being default. However, if I go to the Start Menu, click "Run...", type "www.google.com", and click OK, Safari comes up with Google, but I get the error:
"Windows cannot find 'www.google.com'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
If I do the same thing with Firefox or IE when they pop up correctly with no error.
Also, playing around with it some more, it appears that I can only get this far if I set Safari as the default browser from the dialog that asks if you want to set Safari as default when Safari starts up.
If I go into the Safari preferences, set say Firefox as default, and then type a URL into the Run box, Firefox comes up. If I then change the default browser back to Safari in the Safari preferences, Firefox will still be the default browser.
If I then close the preferences, close Safari, restart Safari, and look at the preferences, Safari is shown as default, but Firefox is still really the default browser.
Same thing happens if I go through the Program Access Defaults dialog. Safari will show as default, but Firefox will still be the default browser.
    I am running XP SP3.
Safari 4 runs beautifully on all of my Macs, though. I just can't use those for work.

Hmm, weird... as far as I can tell LibO is using my CUPS-defined default printer as its default.  Thanks for the feedback - you made me glad that I wasn't posting something irrelevant lol.
Possibly a stupid question but your user is a member of the lp group, right?  I don't have anything set for "Allowed Users" in CUPS but you could also try adding your user there.  Curious to hear of a solution if you find one.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to set default application to open files

    Hello,
Whenever I try to set a default application for a file type (an avi for example) by right-clicking the file in Nautilus and choosing Open with Other Application, I can select the application (in this case VLC), check the Remember this Application checkbox  and click Open, I always get the below message:
Could not set application as the default: Can't create user application configuration folder /root/.local/share/applications: Permission denied
I'm not logged in as root (confirmed with "whoami") so I'm not sure why it's trying to access the root home folder.
I'm thinking this is simply a misconfigured path statement (forgive the Windows terminology) but I'm not sure where to start looking.  Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply ngoonee!
The situation has already changed a bit.  Still being in Windows mode, I decided to try a reboot.  After rebooting I no longer get the error I was before (I wonder if it had something to do with logging in initially as root then su'ing to my user account) but the association with vlc just isn't sticking.
I noticed though that now when I right-click on a video file I get the option to "Open with Movie Player" as well as "Open with VLC media player" (which does do what it's supposed to), which wasn't there before.  For grins I went and set the preferred multimedia app to VLC through System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, but that didn't help.
Is there a place these preferences are stored that I might take a peek at?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have never heard of the term "S0" and "S1" for drives. Perhaps you mean sda and sdb.
Go into the BIOS, choose your equivalent of "Hard disk priority", move the drive that you want to boot first above the rest of the others, and then exit by saving the settings (usually F10). That should do the trick. Alternatively, you could open up the case and move the SATA cables around, but be careful if you use "sdx" name conventions in /etc/fstab.
    Thanks for the reply
I made up S0 and S1 for simplicity. sda and sdb makes more sense I suppose.
My BIOS does not recognize sdb in the priority menu, I'll try moving the SATA cables.

  • How to set default browser in blueman?

    Hi all,
I've managed to get my bluetooth phone working with blueman ok but when I try to browse a device I get:
        Failed to launch "nautilus"
[Errno 2] No such file or directory
You can enter an alternate browser in service settings
I haven't been able to find any worthwhile reference to what the third line means - and not for want of trying. The blueman install only seems to provide  ~/.config/blueman/bueman.conf  - which is a binary. In fact, `file blueman.conf` returns "8086 relocatable (Microsoft)" which is something I've never come across before.
Does anyone know a solution to this? The Arch wiki describes blueman as "a full featured Bluetooth manager written in GTK and, as such, is recommended for GNOME or Xfce". It doesn't then follow on with "...but only if you install nautilus and a range of other unrelated crap including the whole Gnome Desktop".
Ideally I'd like the blueman browse function to lauch thunar (as would most people who run an Xfce desktop). If anyone could give me any ideas on this I'll be mightily grateful.

(Who's been with Arch for one week now - something of a seat-of-your-pants experience, but no less wonderful for that)

Many thanks guys for both of your replies.
Yes, it seems the basic problem is lack of obex support in anything other than nautilus.
There's a little on the subject here too:
         http://thunar.xfce.org/pwiki/documentat … -obex-send
I also have a need for reliable mobile broadband connectivity via a Huawei USB dongle, so in the short term I've gone back to the outsized Gnome + networkmanager. I'll tinker with Xfce on a separate small partition to see if I can get as I want it.
Arch, though, is brilliant. And this is a friendly, knowledgeable community. I'm having great fun!

oh wait... I just spotted this in the wiki guide, a little too late
NB: Some modules do not support indexing options eg. snd-hda-intel. If you experience problems on reboot edit /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf to just have the modules.
what does that mean "edit /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf to just have the modules.".... what modules? :S
should I just remove "index=0" from the line?
Edit: yes I should. It's working
    Thx man

  • Firefox not default browser

In our school computers we use Firefox as a browser and Evolution for email. But both under Windowmaker (Me) and Gnome (The rest of the school)  we can't get Firefox to be the default browser. Under WM Firefox continually pops up a window asking if Firefox should be the default browser but it doesn't stay that way. Furthermore, clicking on links from email does not bring up Firefox.
