[SOLVED] LXDE: no sound in thunderbird

Just cleaned up my laptop by removing KDE, Gnome, and every other DE/WM I've managed to collect over the years. Now I'm running LXDE, and am so far delighted with how far it's come since the last time I tried it (several years ago).
Anyway, I've got everything working just how I want it, except for Thunderbird/Lightning notification sounds. They just don't play. I installed pulseaudio and sound from other GTK apps (pidgin) works just fine, as does youtube, etc.
I've read a few TBird bug reports that hinted it relied of ESD for sound. I only found ESD in AUR, though:
aur/esound 0.2.41-3 (285)
    Enlightened Sound Daemon
Previously I was using KDE4 and Thunderbird sounds worked, I assume via ARTS.
Anyone have any idea?

that problem is likely a bug in PULSEAUDIO, as pulseaudio is SUPPOSED to be a drop-in replacement for ESD.
In KDE4 / QT Phonon takes care of the multimedia, and normally apps don't goto pulseaudio directly.
Output is send to phonon, which then sends it to the chosen output device, which CAN be pulseaudio.

  • Solving the distorted sound?

Hi, I have itunes v7.1 and am experiencing the same sound problems everyone else seems to , (poor and lowers the volume in the middle by itself). I was thinking of installing v6.5 software but will that solve the bad sound on my music automatically or will I have to re input my cd's into itunes to resolve the sound quality issue?

You might try upgrading to the laterst version.
    Also see troubleshooting sound problems:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
Having said that, I had to downgrade to 6.0.5.
It is not a problem, but you have to retrieve your old 6.0.5 library from Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You can find the old version here:

  • [Solved] Annoying GUI sounds in LXDE

I wonder if anyone else is having problems with GUI sounds simply playing when using LXDE.  Like when I close a window, click certain buttons, it all plays ugly sounds that I do not like; I do not have this problem in any other wm/DE, so if someone knows what is going on, I would be happy to hear it.
    Thank you!

  • [SOLVED] LXDE / Evolution: setting default browser?

    Hello,
Recently I switched to LXDE coming from Gnome, and clicking an URL in an email doesn't open my browser anymore.
I searched gconf-editor to set my default browser app, and found some references to epiphany (that I changed to firefox), but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.
    Anyone?

Army wrote:I think this has to be set up in your email program! I use claws-mail and there is an option for this. I think evolution is too much integrated into gnome to be able to  do such a setting in the program itself, maybe it looks into Gnome's defaults, which you cannot set without the configuration tools of gnome.
    My recommendations:
Use another mail programm, i.e. claws-mail, which I like pretty much.
Install Gnome (minimal installation), do the settings and uninstall it afterwards or let it on the machine, if it doesn't disturb you.
Yes, it looks like I should switch to another emailprogram, but at the moment I'm tied with hands and feet to evolution, since I'm using webcalendars and LDAP-contacts. Thunderbird + lightning is coming along nicely, but it cannot write to LDAP and claws-mail has calendar-support, but it is slow and the GUI to it is very arcane.
The gnome-settings are stored IIRC in gconf, and I cannot find the right entries
    Zl.
/EDIT: thought about it and did a new search in gconf-editor and found out that I still had some references to a test-setup for firefox 3.0beta. This thread can be closed as it is solved. THX for your answers!

  • [Solved] LXDE missing window borders (or decoratioins, widget?)

    Hello,
The LXDE runs fine on my newly built arch for a couple of days, and then I must have done something (e.g. upgraded or uninstalled some packages) and now I can still log into LXDE by using slim login manager or startx command, but none of the applications will have the window borders and I am not able to move the application window around or minimize/resize the window.
    Here is my .xinitrc file
    [sgeuser@sge00 ~]$ cat .xinitrc

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • [SOLVED]Problem with sound in HDMI

    Hello good society of Arch
Now I have problems with sound from HDMI. I use Arch as an tvPc, wasting movies and tv shows on it. I use ALSA and it works well, except of a few files that I have, then there is picture but sound is either twisted or not played at all. It does not matter whether I use vlc or mplayer, I'm experiencing the same problem.
I have not found anything about this with google, other problems have been either hdmi sound working or not, not like it is with me, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.
I know that the files are ok, I can play them in anther pc I have (also using Arch on that pc).
Does anybody know what the problem might be? What do I have to look at to find out what the problem is? This have been like this for some time now, but I haven't looked into it before, because I don't use TV that muts, but the wife does and when she stats blaming Arch, I have too do something about it.
I have never encountered problem with Arch that i cant solve by using this forum and google
    Thanks

I will look at this when i come home from work, thanks.

  • [Solved] lxde and pcmanfm missing options

Solved, read here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=737 (both intentionally missing)
After last night's pcmanfm update (0.5.2-1  to 0.9.7-1), my pcmanfm is missing the tree option in the left panel (and judging from other posts, other things as well that I haven't needed yet).
Also my lxde now does not have a background nor is the entire tab available anymore in the "Desktop Settings" option (or anywhere anymore).  It is a totally different "Preferences" window only giving General, Display, Volume Management, Advanced tabs.
I have regularly switched between ratpoison and lxde|openbox.  I use "exec ck-launch-session lxde" in my ~/.xinitrc.  I also tried "exec startlxde" which didn't help.  I manually startx.
I have searched (and asked in #archlinux but nobody answered) and found these threads that touched on similar problems with pcmanfm but nothing about my issues that I could see.  I also looked in lxde forums but no luck.

anamesa wrote:Though there is some solution in one of the mentioned threads, I preferred to downgrade to previous version 0.5.2-1 and put pcmanfm in IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf. I'm a bit lazy you see. Now everything is back to normal. I'll keep it that way till it breaks the dependencies.  If the pcmanfm developer claims it is intentional, then so be it. In the meantime I'll think of a way to get rid of pcmanfm alltogether and to replace it with another means of handling transparency & desktop bg in my arch setup.
feh (an image viewer allows you to set backgrounds. I have pcmanfm installed, but I rarely use it since most times I just use cli commands to browse thru files. There are other light and fast file managers on the wiki if you were looking to switch.
    Common File Managers
    Lightweight File Managers
Also there are others that Archers have developed which you will find in the Community Contributions sub-forum. Ranger and qtfm come to mind

  • [Solved] LXDE Install Fails Due To Disabled Key

    When I run:
    # pacman -S lxde
    I get this error:
error: lxdm: key "Daniel Wallace <his email address>" is disabled
    Later I get this:
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
I'm assuming the second error is due to the first.
I did some reading and the way I understand it is that I don't need to do anything for this specific key since all five of the master keys have signed it. Do I understand correctly?
I've already done an update and I tried "pacman-key --refresh-keys" which did not help. Hopefully that wasn't a terrible idea. Also, I removed lxde from the cache and tried again with continued failure.
*marked as solved and edited out an email address.

Can I somehow copy the key database from one Arch system to another?
    EDIT:
    Ok, forget it.
Finally the following command sequence worked but only after deleting/moving the directory /etc/pacman.d/gnupg as suggested by the wiki page of pacman-key:
    pacman-key --init
    pacman-key --populate
    pacman-key --refresh-keys

  • [Solved]Alsa funkiness (sound breaking)

(Note: I originally thought this was a steam issue, but turns out it's not only steam that can break my sound (see the update on the bottom))
I get an issue with Steam where I get a short (less than 1s) sound on repeat/loop (usually it's some part of the message notification sound, or a trailer that I was watching) sounding a bit like a broken record, randomly occurring after keeping steam open for long periods of time in the background. Only fix I've found so far is to restart steam.
I have the Enlightenmen 18 Window Manager.
    Notable errors:
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 70: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 78: saw unknown, expected number

AL lib: pulseaudio.c:612: Context did not connect: Access denied
I don't have any reliable method to reproduce the issue, and it does not seem to output an error of it's own in the terminal output when it occurs. I have noticed that this is more likely to occur when steam has been open for prolonged periods. I am not using pulseaudio, just Alsa. I also noticed when I was running a Wine game (not through steam) that this issue occurred, and it seemed to contaminate the sound outputs for whine too (I got like a "double" sound for every sound effect the game played). If the sound was completely broken on steam and making a loop like I explained at the start of this post and then I close steam while the Wine game is running, the sound from steam will remain until I shut down the game too (i.e. seems that this isn't just breakage internally in steam, but in alsa itself)
The one thing I have tried to solve this was install lib32-libpulse, this did not seem to fix the errors nor the problem. I imagine installing pulseaudio could fix this problem, but pulseaudio downright hates my sound card, so I would rather not use it.
I also have two other issues too that are less severe.
1: Mouse cursor sometimes gets locked in steam instance (Right clicking will show the steam context menu, pressing "stop" in that context menu will solve the issue. This sometimes happens when I use "Ctrl + C"(copy) or "Ctrl + V"(paste) when I'm typing in the discussions)
2: Fullscreen videos will not go fullscreen (they will only fill the steam window)
    Update:
I found a bulletproof way to make a similar issue occur.
If I open facebook in firefox, and get a message notification while I am playing a movie in Cmplayer (my media player of choice) the sound in CMplayer breaks (but firefox's sound keeps working normally)
    Update2:
I was rather desperate to get this fixed so I installed pulseaudio as much as I despise it, the quality of my audio is damaged by it, but this problem was as I suspected fixed by installing it. I am guessing pulseaudio is set up partially to prevent issues like this one, but I would relaly prefer not to have it. This does not rid me of all the errors however (reference_audio_renderer errors persist) but it does create a new error for steam:
[0706/215704:ERROR:alsa_output.cc(684)] Failed querying delay: Input/output error

I always had to have an asound.conf in the name of upmixing 2.0 to 5.1 This is the content of my asound.conf before I made the changes. I also had a problem with a game where I had crackling noises on 48khz so I had to tell alsa to force 96khz (or 44.1khz but since my card supports 96khz that's what I went with) to avoid that.

  • [SOLVED]LXDE pacman errors

    Hi,
Sorry new to arch linux / these forums, cant find anyting about the errors I am having.
I'm getting some errors in pacman whilst trying to install LXDE.  I'm installing it in a fresh arch linux install in VirtualBox, it is fully up to date.
It can not retrieve two gtk packages files, in particular, gtk2-2.24.8-1x86-64.pkg.tar.xz, gtk-update-icon-cache-2.24.8-1x86-64.pkg.tar.xz
And the pacman exits as it has not for all the packages.
    My mirrors are:
    * mirror.lividpenguin.com
    * archlinux.positive-internet.com
My pacman.conf has [core] [extra] [community] enabled.
A little bit stuck, anyone else having / have these issues or can anyone point me in the right direction to solve?
    Thanks,
    Jon

    ftp://mirror.lividpenguin.com/pub/archl … os/x86_64/
Those packages arrived  23: 14 on 16th, when did you last try a pacman -Suy? You could download them manually then "pacman -U" the package.

  • [solved] No speaker sound after suspend

Hey I'm wondering if someone can help me out with this.  My speakers work fine after cold boot / reboot, but after suspend there is no sound.  Headphones still work before / after suspend.  This started quite a while ago, and I've been following this other thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=163248 but nothing has worked so far.
It's on a Dell M1330 laptop.  Below are some hopefully helpful outputs - I didn't notice anything different between before and after suspend outputs.
    Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

This did work!  It'd be nice to have the auto-mute functionality, but I don't use headphones *that* often.
    Thanks to both!

  • How to solve loss of sound with ipad 2 with 6.01

How do you solve the loss of sound problem with an iPad 2 using IOS 6.01

    iPad Mail
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/mail/
Have you tried this?- Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • [Solved (kindof)] No sound in Don't Starve

Hello. Earlier today I made this thread where I didn't get sound in Binding of Isaac. That was solved, as written, by doing what was described here.
That wiki article was about Don't Starve, which is the game I'm trying to play now, but the solutions in the wiki doesn't work for me. Everything works fine, except no sound. I've googled like crazy, and the solutions that solved it for others haven't for me.
I installed lib32-alsa-plugins, still no sound
    I added the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
to the startup parameters, and to my surprise, still no sound. Then I am out of ideas.
Starting steam through the console, then starting Don't Starve, gives out some errors:
Cannot read socket fd = 46 err = Success
Could not read result type = 22
Client name = rjack conflits with another running client
    Cannot connect to the server
FMOD Error: Error initializing output device.
    SoundSystem::Initialize failed
    cDontStarveGame::DoGameSpecificInitialize()
FMOD Error: An invalid object handle was used.
Every time I hover over a button, that's supposed to make a sound, I get this
FMOD Error: Can't play event dontstarve/HUD/click_mouseover: An invalid object handle was used.
I use ALSA and JACK. Anyone got any idea? Thanks
I made a post about this issue in the Don't Starve reddit, to try and see if they know. Then I made this topic to see if you guys know. I just bought the game and really want to be able to play it.

A little update. Was going to play another game with a friend on steam, also didn't work with sound. So I looked into if I could install PulseAudio alongside JACK, so that I could just start Pulse and have the game use that if needed. Worked. I had to use the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
launch parameter to get the sound to work, still.
Even with Pulse, sound in Don't Starve doesn't work. I can now however go to the settings, up the sound, save, and have the sound not reset back to zero. So that works.

  • [SOLVED]No more sound in flash, but kmix shows a stream

    Hello all,
I'm fairly new (and happy that I switched) to Arch .  When I installed Arch on my x86_64 based laptop everything worked fine.  Somewhere along the line I lost sound in flash.  I use KDE with the defaults for sound: Phonon, Pulse, and ALSA.  For my phonon backend I'm using VLC, but have also tried gstreamer.  I first realized the issue in late November and have since been wrestling with it in my spare time to no avail.  I have tried everything in the forums and wikis that I could find (even if it seemed like it didn't apply).  The one difference that I'm experiencing that no one else has posted is that I have a stream show up in kmix when a video is playing, but still have no sound.  It's not muted, and I can move the volume slider with no change.  I have no idea when exactly it broke, or what update may have caused it.  Has anyone had this issue and solved it without posting?  Can anyone offer some troubleshooting advice?  I was previously a Gentoo user of 6+ years and wonder if there  are any Arch tools similar to equery (depends and depgraph flags) that can help me find all the packages installed that are related to flash?  Also, is there anything in Arch that is similar to the Gentoo emerge log?  I would like to clean out everything flash and pulse related and start from scratch, but don't know the best way, or even a clean way, to approach this.
Thank you in advance for any help offered.
    Regards,
    Joseph

@alexkarro  Thanks for your quick reply and for the links.  Unfortunately, I followed the advice from both links.  I have both lib32-alsa-plugins and lib32-libcanberra-pulse installed.  From what I understand about the first link, my default device is the correct device.  But just in case I'm wrong I pasted the output from aplay and my asound.conf below.  Am I misinterpreting the output to aplay, or configuring my asound.conf wrong?    Originally, when it worked, I got all the config instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio.
    Thanks again.

  • [Solved]lxde doesn't start from xinitrc

So I'm setting up arch in virtualbox to play with it and I've setup the system and partition(s) but upon trying to use lxde as a DE I'm strugling. I've added
    exec startlxde
to ~/.xinitrc and upon reboot I'm greeted with the regualar terminal prompt. Is the command wrong or is there more that I'm missing? I've install xorg and startx doesn't seem to have issues and I've installed lxde-common & xdterminal.
Let me know if I should give more specific info for anything. Thanks

.xinitrc gets executed when you run startx, not automatically at boot. Sounds like you're looking for LXDM?
