[SOLVED] Lynx Browser: Can't access https sites.

Hello, an arch newbie here.   I hope I posted in the right section.
I'm having a little bit of trouble using the text-based browser "lynx".  I made sure to precompile lynx with ssl options before make and installing.  Yet, when I try to access a https site, it throws the message:
"Alert!: This client does not contain support for HTTPS URLs.
lynx: Can't access startfile https://www.archlinux.org/"
Some extra information:
"lynx -version

Not sure what I'm missing.  My first guess is to uninstall it, and remake it with different .configure options.  I'm hesitant though, because it seems like it is already set up to handle https sites correctly.   I've been trying to make this work for a couple days.
Thanks in advance for your time, I appreciate any advice.

This is a bad idea.  Now you have untracked files in your root directory and there is a fair chance this could lead to a file conflict when running pacman in the future.  You should make a PKGBUILD for anything you want to build yourself.

  • Can't access HTTPS sites-message says can't establish a secure connection

Whenever I try to access any secure (HTTPS) site, I get a message saying that Safari can't establish a secure connection. I'm running on an I Book G4, 10.3.9. This started a couple of weeks ago. It had been fine.
I have an IMac runnning the same operating system and the same Safari version and that works fine.
    Any ideas? Thanks
    I Book G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You need to update OS X to v10.8.5
Click your Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.
OR, open the App Store then select Updates from the menu top of the App Store window.
    Then follow the instructions.
When the updates are finished, try Safari.
Very very important to keep your Mac's software up to date.

  • Wha wha wha??  Can only access https sites, not http?

This is odd. I don't have a firewall. I can get on https but not http. Software Update also doesn't work, nor does anything iTunes does that needs the internet.
Also, I suddenly need to type in an administrator password any time I modify or move anything in the Applications folder. I didn't used to have to do that.
I don't know if this is related, but around the time this happened, I was trying to fix some annoying Time Capsule issue. I was able to finally fix it by using the Terminal and typing in some unix stuff:
sudo chflags nouchg /Volumes/Data ("Data" being the name of the data folder in Time Capsule)
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Data
I used the same commands on my wife's MacBook, which was having the same Time Capsule issue, and she can still connect to the internet just fine. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

  • Accessing https sites

    Phone: E66
    Provider: BT Business mobile
    Hi,
I can access http sites either through gprs or wlan no problem but cannot access https sites through either gprs or wlan?  I suspect this is the limiting factor of not being able to get mail for exchange to work.
    Many thanks
    Russ

    hello
Same problem but my emac is brand new so preference files not likely to be corrupted in my case. Safari constantly saying unable to load page for this reason or that, including Apple https Secured sites. A lot of the time, hitting the refresh button will load the page but sometimes it still won't load. This is a bit more of a bummer seeing as Apple's own web browser will not load Apple's own web pages.

  • Can't access some sites when using Aiport Express, why?

I'm using Windows 7 and my router is a wireless Apple Airport Express that is approximately two years old. Suddenly I can't access some sites (for example www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se, or www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk, some streamed tv-shows on svtplay.se, and a number of other random sites) when connecting to internet with my router. It worked good until recently and I'm fairly sure this problem emerged when my ISP upgraded from 10/10mbit to 100/10mbit speed. Most other sites like facebook and google works fine.
When using my network cable to connect to internet everything works fine and I can access these sites.
Firmware is current and I've tried reseting the router to factory defaults.
Tried different browsers, and I can't ping the "blocked" sites either. Tracert www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se starts with 10.0.0.1 and continues through a number of long addresses until it says timeout. The last working address before timeout was sth-tcy-ipcore01-ge-0-2-0.neq.dgcsystems.net [83.241.252.13], if it matters. Tracert www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk also eventually gives me a timeout.
When the network cable is plugged in, I still get timeout on tracert www.sthlm.friskissvettis.se even though I can access the site in Chrome. Weird. www.vegetarian-shoes.co.uk doesn't give me a tracert timeout when the cable is plugged in, and I can access the site as usual.
I've tried changing DNS servers to use opendns servers instead, but to no use.
I've tried pinging these two sites with a lower MTU packet size (with this method: http://www.richard-slater.co.uk/archives/2009/10/23/change-your-mtu-under-vista- or-windows-7/), but still can't access them through ping...
I don't know what to do anymore.... any suggestions???
    Thanks

    Hi Punice
first try to disable JavaScript from : Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Content panel > '''UNcheck''' Enable JavaScript.
if the above does not help check with a few malware/virus scan programs for virus. You need to use all programs because each detects different malware. Make sure to update each program to get the latest version before doing a scan.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

  • Can't access some sites on DSL - Westell 37W or Verizon connection issue?

I've been experiencing a problem with Verizon's DSL service for the last few days. I have a brand new Dell Dimension with Windows XP hooked up a Westell 327W router (hard - wired) and other laptops running both Vista and XP. All of a sudden, all the users on the same network can't access certain sites. I initially uninstalled AVG on my computer thinking that may have something to do with blocking these websites (aa.com, orbitz.com), and then I realized that some of the laptops don't have any anti-virus programs and still have the same problem. The only thing in common is that they run on the same network off of the same router. Which is when I called Verizon, only to hear from them that they don't block websites, and that the problem is something related to the computer. When I tried explaining that other users also have the same problem (and it is only within the last 5 days), they still won't accept that something is wrong with the router/DSL connection. I checked the firewall settings for the router and they are turned off. Can someone please help me? Am I wrong in assuming that the problem is on Verizon's side?

I appear to be having the same problem (erratic browser connections) as you guys. I was speaking with a tech support person last night who after having me replace Internet Explorer with Firefox (and still having the same issues) told me that the problem was with my computer. I reside in North Jersey as well. This morning, while riding to work I was speaking with a bus-mate and told him about my internet problem. He lives a few blocks away and told me that he has been experiencing the same thing for about a week and that he knows of another person with the same issue. So it appears to me that it’s some sort of Verizon problem. I tried to recap things and send them an e:mail a little earlier, but I think it fell on deaf eyes. I will try to call them later this evening and will report back to this forum tomorrow.

  • Can't Access One Site - Common Threads

I have recently been hit by the unable to access one site problem.
Having read through all the threads, it seems many people are identifying it as a possible DNS issue; however, it seems that almost all of the issues are with people who are hosting their own web servers off-site.
I was hoping this thread could gather information from people who are having/had this issue?
    1) Was the inaccessible site self-hosted?
    2) Did you have any server changes, etc?
    3) Have you solved the issues, how?
Hopefully this gets to the bottom of things.

There is one site that I am aware of that I can not access using my Airport. I have narrowed down the issue to the Airport so far. When I bypass the Airport, the web site connects. Both my Macbook and two PC's can not access this site if I connect via the Airport. I have reset, powered down, booted the modem, worked with Norton and Comcast: still no fix.
I tried changing settings in the utility tool that were suggested on the boards here and still no correction. If anyone has an idea, please post here. Thanks. If I find a correction, I will post here.

  • Safari Mac can't access web site that Windows can

None of my Macs can access the site http://cards.123greetings.com . I get Can't Find Server messages in both Safari and Firefox. (Clearing caches doesn't help)
cards.123greetings.com is part of a large free card site that did a major upgrade in October. It still renders correctly on a PC running Windows XP Home which runs on the same network as the Macs, so it's not an isp problem.
Since both Macs (G4 iBook running 10.3, MacBook running 10.4) have the same Can't Find Server problem with both Safari and Firefox, it appears that some setting in the Macs themselves is causing this.
Any help or insight would really be appreciated - Thanks!

A big Thank You to Mulder for letting me know that you can access the site (with Mac Safari I presume) - That's good news.
The bad news: I still can't access the site.
The problem affects two separate computers and four browers. Taking your advice, I repaired permissions and logged in as a new account on both machines. Unfortunately that didn't work.
I next tried accessing the site on the MacBook through Parallels running Windows XP Home. The site came up fine using Internet Explorer.
Then I realized that Parallels operates with a different ip address. So I went back on the Mac using a proxy, and the site came right up.
It now seems that the ip addresses of both computers are being blocked at some level. I want to thank Mulder for replying and virtually ruling out that it might be a Safari issue. I'm now "off topic" and will no longer post in this section. But I'm also over my head... If anyone has advice about how to proceed now, I'd truly appreciate it.
    Thanks!

please help. my address bar has vanished. i have no idea how to retrieve it, so can only access bookmarked sites when using firefox.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Full Screen mode with all toolbars hidden.
    * Press F11 to toggle full screen mode (Firefox/File > Full Screen)
If the menu bar is hidden then press the F10 key or hold down the Alt key, that should make the menu bar appear.
Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout" (Linux, Windows)
    * If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
    * If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

  • Strange WLAN issue - can't access secure sites

    Hi!
I've just bought a Toshiba L100-120. Everything is fine except the following.
I can't access secure sites with the built-in Intel 3945abg device. Other sites are OK.
If i connect LAN, everything is fine. If I insert my PCMCIA-wireless card, also everything works. The only problem is: to access secure sites with the Intel wireless device.
I already changed the drivers, I tried everything. It's very strange :(
Many thanks if anybody has an idea!!!!

    Hi
Im a little bit confused. Do you mean the secured WLan or secured internet websites????
If you cannot enter the secured, encrypted WLan you need to enter the right key.
In other case if some websites are not displayed you could try to change the IE privacy settings for the Internet zone.

  • Can not access HTTPS parts of website Deskjet 3050A

    Hi all,
    Short question for you all:
I not any way I am able to access HTTPS parts of my Deskjet 3050A printer. Among others, I can not use the Webservices and Security functions of my printer. Which is very poor of course...
I have read more posts on this forum related to this topic. But none of them really gets a good answer. Seems to me that HP can easily solve this issue by publishing a software update.
    Allready tried:
    All browser
    Accept certificates
    Add websites to Trusted Sites
Update the printer software, none found...
    My printer and software:
    HP Deskjet 3050A All-in-One Printer - J611n
    Firmware version: SMP1FN1215BR
It would be great if anyone found a solution for this problem yet. Of if a HP support engineer can reply. Thanks a lot!

    Erwin1987,
I am sorry you are having an issue with your web services.
1.) Are you connected Wireless or Ethernet?
2.) Was the software installed from the disk or from the HP website?

  • Can't access certain sites only on firefox even after reinstalling

    Hi,
Today I couldn't access certain sites like my university site and google (had to use yahoo to search). I tried restarting FF in safe mode, reseted FF to factory settings, deleted FF and erased all its data and reinstalled FF23.......
But it still doesn't solve the problem. I have no problems accessing these same sites with another browser. When I access these sites with FF, with by clicking search on my search bar or clicking a bookmark or hyperlink, FF just gives me no response, as if I didn't click anything. If I click to open the link in a new tab, it just displays a blank tab as if I've just pressed Ctrl + T
Can anyone help me with this please? Thanks.

Hello ashash, check if your firewall or your security software blocks firefox access for the specific sites.
    thank you

  • Access https site using Java, is it possible?

I am new on https programming, please give me some advice on this issue.
I have to access an https site, say: https://someoneelsesite/
That site needs a client certificate. I got one certificate which I can now use it to acess the site using IE Web Browser.
Now my question is: is it possible for me writing a Java program to access that site? ( I need to download a file each day on that site)
I read some articles from this forum. Information I got looks like I need https site's public server certificate which I do not have. All I have is a client certificate given by that site to me.
    Some one please advise.
    Thanks a lot.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I searched this site before. The post I got says I need a public certificate of web serve which I do not have. (Maybe I understand it wrong!)
Could you post some piece of your code which connect a https site with only client certificate?
