SOLVED! Mail Crashing - One Solution at least!

hi,
I posted to another thread with problems with mail.app crashing constantly. No solutions appeared, I tried this and that (even resetting mail altogether and deleting all prefs and stuff). But looking more deep into the error messages revealed that mail tried to sync something when it crashed, so I deducted it hasn't really anything to do with mail.app per se, but the syncing services of Mac OS X.
And, it was.
~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices -folder had to go - and tadah! Mail works 100%!
(I dunno really what trashing that folder does, I recommend just moving it away and see if anything brokes. I was too #€%#&ssed off and just trashed the whole thing :P nothing seems missing yet...

  • Hello apple guys, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

hello apple guys, after installing OS X Mavericks, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

So is this the way Apple works now? Not solving customers problems? I'm sure so many users have had this problem. I've had, and I reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Works fine for some days and then several Apple Apps stop working. Is that a way to force us ti update to Yosemite? (I don't want to) and then pay to update some third party programs (i.e. Pro Tools). Also, there are so many 15" MacBooks Pro with graphic problems and of course the guys at the Apple Service Centers always say: "It's the logic board, you can have it replaced, but it's so expensive I would recommend a new Mac".  I really, really miss Steve Jobs!

  • Mail crash on setup/startup ... solved

Using a fresh installation of 10.4.4 on an iBook G4, Mail crashed consistently during setup / startup. I could get through the account definition process, but when the app tried to import messages, it would consistently crash. Restarting the app caused an immediate crash.
Copying the com.Apple.mail... file (~/Library/Preferences) from another Mac didn't help; Mail continued to crash.
I created a new user account. There, Mail.app worked fine, using the same POP account definition.
The console showed an error message in the main user account:
"Mail[492] Error 14 opening SQLite database: unable to open database file"
At that point I noticed that the Mail folder (in ~/Library) had the red '-' icon on it, indicating "no read permissions". Get Info confirmed that this user -- the only user on the system -- had no read access to ~/Library/Mail.
Looking via Terminal, the folder was owned by root; permissions were drw-------
In other words, this user couldn't open or read its own Mail folder. How did it get chown'd to root? No idea. I had not run any mail application, Mail.app or otherwise. As noted above, this was a fresh install of 10.4, not an upgrade or archive.
The solution: sudo chown stephanie Mail
(issued in Terminal, within /Users/stephanie/Library; replace 'stephanie' with your own user name)
Posted in case it helps anyone else...
    iBook G4 1.2   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Solution provided in initial post: change ownership of Mail folder in user's Library folder.

  • Mail Crashing Solved...  For me

I'm running 10.4.11 on a G4 Powerbook, and Mail has been crashing repeatedly on me for the past few days. I sync via IMAP with two gmail accounts. Nothing solved this problem from reinstalling 10.4.11 to repairing disk permissions, and removing the Growl plugin.
I think I found a fix. I'm not exactly sure what solved the problem as I didn't test after each step.
I logged into each of my gmail accounts via a web browser, and emptied my Spam, Sent and Trash folders, and Removed any unused labels. After everything (other than my inbox) was emptied, mail.app stopped crashing...
It must have been a corrupt message.

I think it has to do with some formatting compatibility problem emenating from the PC world. Whenever I get email from a PC user on AOL, those messages make my Mail crash, or hang for a long time. If I'm able to open them up there are pages of code in the body, as if any attachments are not deciphered, and just interperated as code.
I don't really know what to do about that, except delete those messages before I try to open them.

  • Mail crashes on startup and can't be quitted

Since OS Mavericks Mail is not working. Afert all updates Mail still crashes everytime. That is very annoying Apple!
On startup it shows up for two or three seconds and then crash.
Crashed Thread: 50 -[MFPOPAccount _synchronizeMailboxListWithFileSystem] Displatch queue: NSOperationQueue ...
I have 13 POP3 accounts. Only if I deactivate almost all accounts in system preferences before starting Mail, Mail App starts. Then activation all accounts one after one, Mail works. Puh.
But only untill I want quitting Mail. Guess? Right, Mail crashes. This time:

Great. I have to reboot my iMac at least two times a day. Spotlight does not find anything because of the index process and so on. Vista was better.
All solutions here did not help me. Also with a fresh V2 Mail folder it is the same! Also deleting preferences did not help.
Can ynone help me?! Thank you very much. Because I don't want actually switch to Outlook.
By the way iCloud notes are also not working (without crash).

  • Mail crashes in Lion

Since I upgraded to Lion, I am unable to open any link or attachment in Mail. If I click on it, Mail crashes. Anyone have a fix?
    Barry

I think my friend Rafael solved the issue.
After trying everything (deleting preferences, re-converting emails to V2, deactivating and later deleting and re-configuring IMAP accounts,  checking permissions, running in 32bit mode, etc.) but nothing stopped the crashes.
But the simplest thing to do was lying just in front of us:
Check for the message: "** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException'[...]" in your console or on your crash report that opens after crashing. You will see it makes reference to one email (probably in one of your pre-existing Mail folders) that can not be converted and makes Mail crash every time it arrives at that mail to be indexed/converted to the new format. In my case it was one with a .zip attachment. Get rid of that single eMail and say goodbye to the crashes. At least that worked for me instantly and permanently.
    Cheers!

  • Mail crashes when saving attachments

Had this since Snow Leopard. When I get a mail with an attachment and select save it crashes instantly. I can drag the attachment off the email - ie to the desktop, but it's annoying when I forget I have something that doesn't do what it's supposed to and I have to fire up Mail again.
I've sent countless bug reports to Apple - do they go straight in the bin? Anyway - hope someone has a fix. Here's the error report thing.

In my situation I know it is caused by having one or more volumes on my Synology NAS mounted on the desktop. Most of the time a 'Save As' or 'Open' dialog will result in an almost instant application crash. When I unmount all NAS volumes the problem is gone.
This started in 10.6, was solved in my case after one of the minor updates (10.6.3 or 10.6.4) but unfortunately, since I had to restore my system from a Time Machinebackup, the problems started again. A combo 10.6.4 update hasn't helped either. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem (search for TFSVolumeInfo or GetSyncGCDQueue).
Hopefully you can pinpoint your device that is the culprit. Although not solving the issue, you may at least be able to control it.
    regards,
    Erik

  • Apple MAIL crashing

Has anyone started to experience crashes in Apple Mail?
I have happily been using InDeve Mail Tags for a few years
The application was updated, I installed and since then Mail crashes seemingly randomly while composing messages or replies
InDev support has been following with me.
The tech guy had me send some logs and noted that the crashes seem involved with JavaScript (not Java)
OF course I have no clue what might use JavaScript.
Wondering if my issue is idiocyncratic or if MAIL perhaps has changed and thus there is now conflicts with some software?
I am trying to check if I have any third party software needing updating which mIght impinge on MAIL.
    Suggestions welcome

    1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to log in to it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, and a technological fix is not going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the scam artists. If you're smarter than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
    Software from an untrustworthy source
Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent. or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, your browser, or anything else.
Rogue websites such as Softonic and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
    Unexpected events
You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
       6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
    8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an institutional policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in every email attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

    Hello Barry
Thanks for your reply, it did the trick, in a weird sort of way:
After deleting the mail preference file as you suggested, I could check for new mail messages without Mail.app crashing all over the place.
However all my accounts and the messages in them was gone. Okay, one problem solved and new one created.
Solution: Reinstalling my wifes and my own mail accounts and reimporting all the messages from the backup. Sounds boring right?
So I threw caution to the wind and replaced the new preference file with the old one that I had kept in the (disabled) folder. Thinking that it was an easily reversible step.
And it ruddy worked! Now I can again check for new mail messages and I have the old mail accounts intact. The logic of this however escapes me.
The morale: Its a weird world sometimes;-)
Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.
    cheers Nikolaj

  • OS 3.1.2 Mail Crashing

    Dear All/Apple,
Having read the previous posts about mail crashing after the latest update, I am now suffering the same problem. Mail opens for around two seconds before it closes. I have tried the various suggestions to fix the problem but to no avail. Does anyone from APPLE read these posts and if so where is the solution to the problem? Many people like me are self employed and use the iphone as a business tool and can not be without email access. Why don't APPLE properly test these updates before issuing them. I am considering taking my phone back to the shop for a refund as it is 'not fit for purpose' Please, if someone has had the same problem and found a workable solution, please let me know.
    Thank you
P.S. It would also be great to hear from APPLE rather than have them stick their head in the sand!

O.K., so i'm having the same problem.
I have three email accounts set up on my iPhone. This problem seems to affect just one of the accounts.
Everything was working perfectly until yesterday. The problem seems to have manifested itself following receipt of an email with a .wmv attachment (not sure whether the attachment got fully downloaded or not).
On the affected account I no longer have a 'sent' or a 'Trash' box. Every time I start the email app and go to this account the program crashes out within a few seconds. If I then re-start the email app and emails that I did manage to delete before the app crashed just re-appear.
Suggestions/solutions on how to solve this problem would be appreciated as I rely heavily on having my email to hand.
Incidentally, I have emptied my web Email server of all mail. I have tried deleting the account and re-setting it in my iPhone, but each time I re-create the account it still shows approx 27 emails in the inbox.
    iPhone software is 3.1.2.(7D11)
    Cheers
    Jem

  • Mail crashes as soon as I try to open it

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My roommate pulled out the ethernet cord yesterday to do some networking stuff on her laptop, and since then, Mail hasn't worked. The window will come up, but then it immediately crashes.
    I've:
    restarted
    ran Disk Utility (nothing happened)
and now I'm not sure what else to do. She suggested running the console & posting the log I receieved when I tried to open Mail. (Sorry, I know it's a ton of info, but she's posted logs before & received help...)
    thanks!

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • MAIL CRASHING IN YOSEMITE

I'm at a complete loss on this Yosemite mail crashing situation. I can't even get to my mail preferences befor the app crashes to try and make changes. Going on day four with no resolution in sight. Please, can anyone help, seriously frustrated.....

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Mail crashes after a re-installation of 10.9.4

I had some issues with my MacMini Server that I had taken into desktop use. I think it had originally 10.6 something + server. I had upgraded the os to 10.9.4 the normal route and decided to do a re-install 10.9.4 on a cleaned startup drive. I did a clean install and then used migration assistant to load apps and settings. Data is on an other drive & NAS.
After reinstall and restore, I did have some hickups with my old data drive, where the user directories are located. I had to run sudo chown to reclaim ownership of the user directories and get access to them.
All seems to pretty well except mail crashed initially every time I try to send a message. It just froze. Then I found a reference to deleting ~/library/containers/com.apple.mail, which I did. This resulted in Mail crashing at startup.

I do not know if these are of any use, but I would appreciate educated guesses on where to start for a solution.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • 10.5.1 Mail crashes OS (black screen) then wipes Mail settings + mailboxes

So I dragged a PDF to the mail icon to start a new message, Mail creates new message body with PDF but then crashes the entire OS - press the on/off to reboot your system.
Then when the OS comes up again the entire Mail settings are wiped.
Okay so I do a restore from the archived Mail.
    Spaghetti Mail results.
I've now got two sets of archived Mail (this is a new MacBook so I recently imported old Mails from the iBook) nested inside multiple folders... one set of the original iBook to MacBook import - and now a set of the MacBook mail with a set of the iBook to MacBook import inside it.
Problems I have with this: -
    1. Mail crashed my MacBook in the first place
    2. Mail forgot the mail settings even though the mailboxes are still in ~/me/library/mail
    3. Mail double imported archived mail
    4. Mail has no clear and easy way to merge old mail back into a new mail setup.
Now I'm going to resync from the IMAP mail servers to get my INBOXes back... so multiple multiple nests of spaghetti.
    This is pretty unacceptable behaviour.
    Solution: -
    1. Mail should have a back up set of settings to "Clone" settings and mailboxes from an archive
    2. Mail should be smart enough to know that the mailboxes in the users library/mail folder are not alien entities but the data it needs to work.
    3. Mail should have a way to merge archives into the current set of live mail boxes - SENT especially important.
Now I'll be resyncing then dragging and dropping to try to get it to some normality.
Yes perhaps Time Machine is the answer - but that does not resolve the cloning of settings issue... nor help when moving from 10.4
    Awful

Okay - so I've begun restoring the email accounts - I have 5 of them... and it seems to be recognising them and importing the mail from the existing set of mailboxes I'd imported already.
However there is still the issue of Mail recognising that those Mailboxes exist. It should know that they are there and offer to set up the accounts using these mail boxes as a basis.
Not very smart to do it the way it has been done - now I need to delete the archives I've just imported... but that scares me so perhaps I'll just live with them as they are...
Not very impressed with the recovery process.
