[SOLVED] Make 2 sound sources into 1

What I want to do is take two sound sources (plughw:0,0 & plughw:1,0) and make them into either one plug or a whole new (virtual) sound card with a plug...
I am using ALSA (no PulseAudio, JACK or OSS), system updated to latest kernel, etc...
My goal is to have just 1 device that, when recorded, streams both System Sound and Microphone sound...
Help is appreciated!

You might be able to do that directly with your recording software. ffmpeg should be able to do that with custom filter chains and the amix filter

  • Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?

Is there a way to make a long clip into a short clip without compressing it any further?
I went through all my old formats (VHS, hi8, miniDV, etc) and captured them. They end up as .mov files. Some of the longer 2hr ones are about 28GB.
If I am making a new project and I want to edit in short clips from several of these longer files, is there a way to save a short clip from an existing file without compressing it any further?
In other words, lets say I have 10 2hr files, but I know I only want 1 minute from each. Is there a way to select the good 1 minute from each .mov file that I want to use and a version of this 1 minute from each in the folder I am working on the project in, without compressing them??? I like to keep all of the content I am working with on a project in its own folder in case the project needs to be moved from one hard drive to the next while I am working on it. I would hate to have to make a folder that is 280GB or more when I only need a minute from each larger file.
I hope I have asked this in a way that is understandable. Maybe there is a term for what I want to do, that I don't know yet that has its own help section too.   Thanks for any assistance

Thanks Jon - That's kind of where I started, but the part of that I need help with on is the second to last step.
"Export using a codec that matches the source material. "
The codec they were captured in is .mov at DV quality, but then after picking .mov, there are so many other options to choose from as far as compression goes from sound quality and settings, to how many passes, etc. I just want the new clip to be of the same quality as the original clip. It looks so complicated and its not clear to me what options to pick to match the original.
Is there a setting or preference that helps you to match the compression settings of the original clip? Or is there  a way to detect the settings of the original clip so I can repeat that in the shortened clip??

  • How can I use the iPad as a sound source for my Mac?

I would like to be able to record sound off my iPad, onto my Mac.  (I'm using a musical app that only allows me to save short recordings, so I would like to plug my iPad into my Mac and record the music into my Mac, into Audacity or something.)
I know you can't just connect the iPad from the headphone jack, so I'm wondering what equipment I would need.
I've heard that the iPad camera connector can be used to export audio out, does anyone know how that works?
Or, are there any iPad apps available that will make exportable sound recordings of any sounds your iPad is making (from any other app?)  You know, like a screen shot, but for sound instead?
(BTW, I am not interested in streaming music from my iPad.  I already know how to do that.  I'm trying to export audio from a musical instrument app I'm using.)

Unfortunately that link doesn't provide the info I'm looking for...
Answering part of my own question: it ISN'T possible to record audio on the iPad from one app to another. Technically not possible, so there are no apps that serve this purpose.
So, I'm still looking for details on how to connect my iPad to my Mac and use it as a sound source.  I would like to record directly onto my Mac whatever sounds my iPad is outputting, by connecting the iPad to the Mac's audio input in some way.

  • HP-HDX 18t w/ Vista 32 won't retain default sound source after sleeping

That about sums it up. It's a brand new HP HDX 18t laptop running Vista32. It's setup with HDMI to our flat-panel TV and we have a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage-Micro usb card so we can use the SPDIF digital audio passthrough to get the 5-1 dolby sound to the surround sound receiver. It all works as it should playing Blu-Ray DVDs as well as any other sound... no problem. If we completely shutdown and then turn it back on it's fine. But if we put it into sleep or hibernate mode instead, then it loses the default sound source setting we've chosen (SPDIF) and we have to manually reselect it. Same thing if we disconnect it entirely. But that makes some sense and we don't plan to do that a lot so it's not as big a deal.
    Thanks for any insights.
I hope I've provided enough info.

I have the macbook pro 13 inch 2,66 Ghz april 2010 model.
I can't get my headphones to work in Windows 7, 64 bit(bootcamp). It seems like the cirrus logic CS 206 A (AB13)drivers are the problem.
I have installed the latest drivers, have set the headphones to standard audio device (I don't know how you call that option in english as my windows is dutch). I also disabled the macbook speakers, the digital audio device and nothing seems to work. I can play music through my macbook but can't play it through my headphones. In mac osx there is no problem at all doing this, the problem is only in windodws 7.
It's very annoying because I would like to play some games.
And yes I've installed the 64 bit drivers.

  • [Solved (kindof)] No sound in Don't Starve

Hello. Earlier today I made this thread where I didn't get sound in Binding of Isaac. That was solved, as written, by doing what was described here.
That wiki article was about Don't Starve, which is the game I'm trying to play now, but the solutions in the wiki doesn't work for me. Everything works fine, except no sound. I've googled like crazy, and the solutions that solved it for others haven't for me.
I installed lib32-alsa-plugins, still no sound
    I added the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
to the startup parameters, and to my surprise, still no sound. Then I am out of ideas.
Starting steam through the console, then starting Don't Starve, gives out some errors:
Cannot read socket fd = 46 err = Success
Could not read result type = 22
Client name = rjack conflits with another running client
    Cannot connect to the server
FMOD Error: Error initializing output device.
    SoundSystem::Initialize failed
    cDontStarveGame::DoGameSpecificInitialize()
FMOD Error: An invalid object handle was used.
Every time I hover over a button, that's supposed to make a sound, I get this
FMOD Error: Can't play event dontstarve/HUD/click_mouseover: An invalid object handle was used.
I use ALSA and JACK. Anyone got any idea? Thanks
I made a post about this issue in the Don't Starve reddit, to try and see if they know. Then I made this topic to see if you guys know. I just bought the game and really want to be able to play it.
    Last edited by raggerv8 (2015-03-06 16:02:14)

A little update. Was going to play another game with a friend on steam, also didn't work with sound. So I looked into if I could install PulseAudio alongside JACK, so that I could just start Pulse and have the game use that if needed. Worked. I had to use the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
launch parameter to get the sound to work, still.
Even with Pulse, sound in Don't Starve doesn't work. I can now however go to the settings, up the sound, save, and have the sound not reset back to zero. So that works.

  • Mac Pro makes no sounds

My old Mac Pro 1,1 does not make any sounds. When I open the Sound Control Panel and select the Output tab, The 'Select a device for sound output' mini window says 'No output devices found.'
I need a solution that does not involve reinstalling the OS. I have done that twice, and both times have lost my connection to all my old software (Adobe, Microsoft, etc.). Moreover, it scrambles my iPhoto Library which has a great deal of photos in its database. Does anyone have any ideas? There has gotta be something I can do, load some file or something instead of reinstalling the OS. Help!

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Sound fails when opening new sound "sources" quickly after one another

I hava a problem when the sound on Arch running XFCE.
At first, there was no sound. I searched for a solution, and found one that seemingly did help. I created .asoundrc in ~ with this text:
    pcm.!default {
        type plug
        slave.pcm {
            @func getenv
            vars [ ALSAPCM ]
            default "hw:PCH"
This should set the default sound card (as my motherboard have both PCH and HDMI sound card).
Now there is sound, but it fails when i switch from different sound "sources" (like different YouTube-videoes). For the sound to work again, I have to refresh the page, and generally wait some 20 seconds.
My motherboard is MSI GAMING 3 Z97, and I don't have more sound card than what is on that card.
So I was hoping for some help. It's not a big problem, but a bit irritating. :)

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you've got a custom timecode field somewhere in your production and/or asset metadata group(s), right? And I'm going to further guess that this timecode field has dashes in it like this --:--:--:--, right? If so, try this: Click the arrow next to the timecode field and adjust the timecode so that it has a number (it doesn't matter what the number is as long it's not dashes - "00:00:00:00" is fine). Then Save this asset, close it and then reopen it and see if the beeping madness has vanished. Then, to make this change permanent for all of your new assets, make sure to edit the default value of any custom timecode fields to put zeros (or some other numeric default value) into them when a new asset is generated. If the asset still beeps when you open it, check the other metadata groups in your set to see if there isn't another empty timecode field lurking in the shadows.

  • A tiny little cry for help: mic in bootcamp makes me sound like a mouse!

I posted this on the InsanelyMac forum, and I thought I'd post it here too because I'm just that desperate for help... thanks in advance for reading.
I run a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. When Snow Leopard came out I installed it and partitioned my drive to allow me to run Windows via bootcamp for the purpose of playing Aion with my husband.
The game works fine, although it only works correctly when I'm hooked to my large Dell monitor. The built-in display makes the mouse/cursor not function correctly in-game.
But that's relatively minor... the biggest problem is that the built-in mic, as well as any mic I plug into the Line In, makes me sound like a mouse when I speak. I SO don't want to be known as the squeaky mouse over ventrilo. (The problem occurs in a regular sound recorder too, so it is NOT ventrilo specific).
The audio device is listed as Intel High Definition Audio: Device ID 0x83847680, Audio ID 30 - whatever that means.
When I dive into the Control Panel audio preferences when booted into Windows, the driver is listed as IDT audio.
Audio output seems to function perfectly.
I would sure appreciate help if anyone has expertise or experience with this sort of thing. I'm at a little bit of a loss.
    TIA,
    Jen

Hey, I had a thought, I don't know if it'll work and won't get the chance to find out until later tonight if I'm not too tired or until later tomorrow.
I think that if the IDT drivers aren't installed in the first place, perhaps the issue can be averted entirely. However, it's going to take a bit of knowledge to do and some patience. The partition will need to be remade entirely so that one may end up with a fresh operating system. When the SL disk is put into the computer, instead of running the full driver setup, pick the drivers directly off the disk by exploring its folders and only install the ones you need. Instead of using the IDT drivers, I believe the SL disk also has Realtek HD audio drivers (if I remember correctly from the last time I looked). My thought is that this manual method can prevent having to deal with the IDT drivers which I believe are part of the issue.
I understand that reinstalling XP is a process in itself, but this is the only solution I can think of. If manually installing doesnt work, my next move would be to use the drivers that come off the Leopard disk instead of the SL disk.
Like I said, this is just a thought I have so when I get to it later I'll let you know how it goes unless you decide to give it a try before me.

  • I can't paste text from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.

    Hello everyone,
Since a few days I'm not able to paste texts from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.
I never have problems with Photoshop CC before.
I have the new iOS Yosemite installed in my macbook.
It's really frustrating, can someone help please?

I have basically the same setup, except on a Mac Mini. I am unable to reproduce your problem. Double check that you are copying the original text in the first place, and then make sure you are pasting into a text layer as you cannot paste into a regular Photoshop layer -- nothing will happen. Create a text layer by clicking on a regular layer with the text tool, the T in the tool box. The new layer will show up in the layers panel identified by the first line of the text.

  • Converting excel source into csv format

    Hi,
I have to convert excle source into csv format.
my excel source has around 40000 records.
Please give me the suggestions how to do it.
    Thanks,
    Venkat

Or, if this is going to be an ongoing issue with new files needing to be converted, there are several utilities out there of various quality and price which can be considered. A quick google turned up a whole host of options for various platforms.
I can't comment on any of them as I haven't used them, but clearly there are several converters with command-line interfaces which should be capable to be utilized as an external command in your process flow.
    Like: http://www.softinterface.com/Convert-XLS/Features/Convert-XLS-To-CSV.htm
Heck, if you really want to have fun and DIY, I know that there are native Perl Excel modules, so you could always build your own and make it cross-platform!

  • Could not make connection to source system

    Hello Experts,
I am trying to fetch data based on selection for last month in info-package but when I try to enter selection (pull down button), I get error message - "Could not make connection to source system..."
    Any idea why this message?
I have already checked connection to ECC - is fine.
    Datasource is replicated.
Also if I try to run info-package without selection - I am getting yellow status, No data fetched. RSA3 shows many rows but Info-package to data (Full extraction.)
    Regards,
    SM

    Srini/Vikram,
user credential is good. sm59 connection is good. there is data in selection as RSA3 fetches rows in ecc.
when I run any info-package - I am getting yellow status? No data while rsa3 indicate data for Full update?
    why so?
I am more of design person, not much into hands-on - so seeing these error for first time.
Q1) if a package is already schedule - let us sat thru data source 2lis_11_vaitm. Now I want to go back and retrieve last month data already extracted... once again. I should be able to pull this data in new infopackage using Full update - data selection option.
Q2) - rsa3 should fetch data based on set-up tables, so any infopackage based on Full update mode - should fetch data - independent of any other infopackage.
q3) we need to do delete and fill-set-up table - only if extract structure is changed? right?

  • Pulling fla source into director

Does anyone know how/if you can pull a flash movie(s) into
Director and edit them within Director?
Here's the situation. I have three flash movies that I have
the source for (fla) that make up a preloader, the main movie and
an exit scene. I have been asked to convert the intanet web page
into a CD for distribution. Is there any way that I can pull the
FLA's into Director and be able to edit them from within the
Director console? I do not just want to import the swf. I would
like to be able to convert a Flash file into a dir file.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I appreciate your help, Sean. So I can't pull the source into
Director. I guess it's off to Amazon to pick up a Director Book.
    A (very) short overview:
I have three swf movies that comprise a preloader screen
(zipping images and whizbang text) that fades into the main
interactive movie. The main movie is basically an in-depth web page
(all 17mb of it) with images, text, and animations. When you click
exit, you are directed to a third credits movie. This was all
developed in Flash a while ago and has been periodically updated.
Now, the 'boss' wants to be able to market what we've got
when she's at conventions, meetings, etc. She likes the intranet
page so much that she wants the content put on CD for distribution.
I need to take out some of the proprietary stuff and add a few
other links, e-mail addresses, change around some text and add some
    video clips.
After researching, it seems that Director is a better way to
go for this purpose than Flash. I guess I can still make the
projector in Flash but the more that I read up on Director, the
more that I am impressed with it's ability to easily distribute
    this kind of media.
Not only that, but I guess that I am kind of proud of my
creation. I like the fact that Director is so much harder to
    decompile than Flash.
