[SOLVED]Microphone won't work

I am sure the microphone is fine -- it used to work well on my previous OS (ubuntu), and when I speak it makes sound on the speakers. But, if I try to record, nothing is recorded. I went to alsamixer, pressed F4 and turned all capture devices to maximum -- nothing. Any help?

I am using Audacity to record. I went to the preferences and tried selecting different devices (the options were HDA Intel: ALC662 rev1 Analog (hw:0,0), the same thing but (hw:0,1), default and spdif). Selecting (hw:0,1), some weird bug happens that the time marker doesn't go past zero. With (hw:0,0) I get a lot of static noise. With spdif I get the same as (hw:0,1), and default was the one previously selected.
Here's what alsamixer looks like (I've tried setting all of them to CAPTURE too, but it made no difference):
EDIT: It worked! I changed both of the Input Source options to "Mic" and now it works perfectly. Thanks for the patience everyone.

  • External microphone won't work on Macbook Pro

My external microphone won't work on my Macbook Pro.
My mic is an SE2200 A, and I'm pluggin that into a Behringer Eurorack UB802 (with Phantom power). This is then connected to a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter so I can plug it into my Macbook Pro.
If I plug this directly into my Macbook Pro into the headphone socket (which I've been told doubles up as a mic socket), and go to Settings -> Sound -> Input, the mic does not appear on screen at all.
If I plug it into a 3.5mm to USB adapter, and plug it into a USB port on my mac, then the USB PnP Sound Device appears on the Settings -> Sound -> Input, but no sound is picked up.
Could any suggest why this isn't working?
    thanks

You have to use a cable that will break out the 3.5 mm TRRS jack into mic, L, and R.
I haven't found the right wiring yet and the cables I have tried don't seem to work.
See this post: What is the wiring digram on the MacBook Pro 3.5 mm TRRS jack?

  • Imac microphone won't work

Internal microphone on iMac won't work.
    any suggestions?

I just found and removed a small piece of sticky tape which was covering the mic. The mic is on the top surface of a mac - you can only just see a lighter coloured small round circle in line with the camera on the top narrow surface. My problem was sorted despite all other help and just before I gave up.  Check no-one has posted a sticky message, camera cover or even an ornament over your mic. How many folk know where the mic is?

Okay, here is what Ididin as much detail as possible.

    80 GB XP
    80 GB arch
         *10 GB root
         *70 GB /home
Video Card: nVidia Geforce Go 6100
Okay, so after I installed, I decided to and uncomment all available US repositories with HTTP on them, not FTP. Then I did a full system update, and got the latest nvidia drivers. So I run nvidia-xconfig,  got a little confused when it didn't work and I noticed /etc/X11/xorg.conf was missing. After a while I realized I forgot to download Xorg, once I ran the command it worked. I downloaded HAL, started it and it worked. Then I ran startx, and it wouldn't work. I went into the IRC channel, and tried showed all the errors I got, after a while I was told I shouldn't be using root under any circumstances and the first thing I should have done is create my user ID, which I did, then made myself a Sudoer. Obviously, the errors still appeared, no matter what I did with Xorg. -.-

    Yep carol.
    Nope I didn't install freetype.
Also, I noticed whenever I try to install nvidia I get an error that says these files already exist, and that there is a: Errors occured. No packages were upgraded. In a list of a bunch of files I can't even really list out at the moment.
Pacman -S nvidia gets me that error, when I tried reinstalling xorg, it worked fine. Even when I deleted the cache, and uninstalled files it had the same issue.
I was told to install the latest version available though (again). since I installed some version I got back in 2008 in December. But I've been too hesitant since I felt I might need one of those extra CDs later. So I figured out how to do it through USB, not sure if I should just yet though.
And sorry, didn't notice that long error the last time I thought it meant it was already installed.
But I did do a full system update at least though.

  • Microphone won't work

After installing snow leopard successfully I found out that my internal and external microphone
does not work and I can't figure out how to fix it. Anybody have any ideas?

I have an error that I think might be along the same lines. My audio drivers work to produce sound but whenever I record anything in Garageband '09 on Snow Leopard I get an audio driver error whenever I record or playback audio. It seems to think the audio files are temp files and erases them whenever I quit Garageband so I get "file not found" errors when I open the project. It has caused me to lose quite a bit of time and work. The error I get after recording says the audio driver returned an error, I think it was error -34 or something like that. I cannot replicate it right now because I had to downgrade back to 10.5.8 just in order to complete my work.
I did the Snow Leopard upgrade option originally, then to troubleshoot this I tried a clean install of iLife '09 over the top of a clean Snow Leopard install and the problem still persisted. Seems like a driver based issue to me.

  • My microphone won't work in a skype call

My mic won't work at all when I make a call. I've tried multiple times but it just refuses to work for me.

I took it to the apple store and it was determined to be a mechanical problem. Since I had apple care, they replaced the phone.

  • Microphones won't work on GT683DXR

I have a MSI GT683DXR, upgraded to windows 8, but this problem existed on windows 7 as well.
When I install all the drivers, including the Realtek HD Audio drivers, all my microphones stop working. The onboard microphone will be detected, but records nothing. I also have a USB Headset, with microphone, and that doesn't work too.
When I uninstall the Realtek HD Audio drivers, the onboard microphone starts working again, but has a really low volume. I think that's because the Realtek drivers provide something called 'Microphone boost', which the Windows drivers don't have. The USB Headset microphone isn't working here either.
At both settings, I made sure the microphone volumes were at max, not muted by Windows or any other program and the microphone I tried to use was the default microphone in Windows.
So either way, I don't have a working microphone. It isn't working at all, or I'm stuck with a really low volume because of the lack of microphone boost. Is there any way for the microphone to start working again with the Realtek HD Audio drivers?
Or is there some other solution for this problem?

I just discovered the problem with the headset microphone is with my headset. So now I'll need a solution to only the onboard microphone.

  • Microphone won't work on Audigy 2 ZS Soundc

I've had my Dell system for at least 2 years, and FINALLY have a need to use the microphone input.
I can't get it to accept microphone input on any recording software I've tried.
I read the 5-6 info/help request from 2005 and and am pretty sure I set the Microphone input "on" within
    the surround mixer window.
I've tried three different microphones - they all work on my laptop fine but nothing through the mic on my desktop
that has the audigy card. The Creative diagnostic says everything is fine.
    Suggestions?

UPDATE - It DOES seem to be recording but the volume is so insignificant it doesn't register.
when I record in Photostory it can't be heard unless I "yell" into the mic.
Using Audacity, I can record, small bumps appear on the indicator line. If I then amplify the signal, a lot,
    it's useable.
I have the mic recording volume maxed out in creative sound mixer's setup.
hope you can help. I have multi-media assignments to do for a summer class...

I just bought a T420s, Type 4174-P5G, I want to use an external stereo microphone (Sony ECM-719) instead of the built-in microphone, however as soon as I plug it in the headphone/microphone combined jack, the microphone is recognized as headphone. • [SOLVED]Xorg won't work for my non root user

I installed Arch Linux 2009.08 x86_64 Core inside Sun VirtualBox 3.0.8 and got up to the part of the Beginners' Guide that tells me to test X and it can never work for my non root user. Funny thing is, I tried running it as root and it worked even though my root user has no ~/.xinitrc file. Running startx or xinitrc as my non root user I get a small (maybe 400x600) white terminal but can't use my mouse or keyboard.
After looking over the guide and doing a step I forgot and adding in all of the extra stuff the guide says might help I can use my mouse and keyboard in my non root users' small white terminal but X still won't start properly with xterm even though I put 'exec exterm' in my non root users' ~/.xinitrc file. Please help. Thanks for any help guys.

I don't get it .. this sounds like xterm is starting up successfully (xterm is a small white terminal). Easiest way to get X up and running (imo) is
sudo pacman -S gnome gdm xorg xf86-input-evdev
    sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
    sudo /etc/rc.d/gdm start
I didn't know that's what xterm was, thanks for telling me. Noob mistake.

  • External Microphone won't work!

I had recently JUST bought a headset.
I was excited to use it... I was positive that it was Mac compatible cause it said that it was ipod compatible.. my mistake I guess. Plus I needed to buy a mic under $30 cause that's all I had... and the cheapest one they had was the one I have on now.
Sooo I get it all ready.
There are 2 plug ins. One for the audio head phones... then one for the mic.
Oddly there is NO hole for a mic.. since mac already has a built in mic.. but i hate using that.
Sooo I just plug it into the next available hole.. which looks like this "|>o<|"
    The mic doesn't work....
So I go to System Prefrences on my computer and it says:
    +Changing your computer's sound input device+
+You can input sound into your computer using your computer's internal microphone or an external microphone. For example, you may want to use an external microphone to record your voice, or use the internal microphone to give spoken commands to your computer.+
+Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sound.+
+Click Input, and then select the device you want to use for sound coming into your computer.+
    So I do that..
    Here were the choices:
    Internal Microphone- Built In
    Line In- Audio line-in port
    so I click "Line In"
and my mic still doesn't work.
does this mean I have to get a new headset?
The thing is I called the place and it said that this headset IS mac compatible. Soo I dunno what's going on.
My guess that this isn't mac compatible even though the guy said it was...
    Also,
Any good headsets I can get for the mac UNDER $30?

Hanners, Welcome to the discussion area!
This discussion area is for the G3 iMacs which look like this:
It sounds like you do not have a G3 iMac. It sounds like you have a G4 iMac which looks like this:
The iMac you have does NOT have an audio input port. The plug you have attached the microphone to is the output port for the Apple Pro speakers. By doing that you may have damaged your microphone AND the output port for the Apple Pro speakers.
The only way to use a microphone with your iMac is to either get a USB microphone OR use an iMic along with a standard microphone.
