[SOLVED] moc and 5.1 surround sound

Hello! I use moc for my day-to-day musical needs, but it only uses two speakers. Players like mpv are somehow able to use all of my speakers for two-channel audio if I use "--channels 6" (or update my config). Can I do something similar with moc? I'm using pulse audio.
Edit: Problem was with my alsa/pulse config overall, plus some hardware issues. Reconfigured it all and moc started working correctly.

appletv will output 5.1 audio via HDMI or optical.
ideally you would connect the appletv to a suitable 5.1 amp (with suitable speakers).
the bluray player would also connect to the amp.
for me, i have all my devices connected to amp via HDMI and then have one HDMi cable running from the amp to the TV.

  • ITunes and 5.1 surround sound problem

The iTunes won't play my music in 5.1 surround sound. Now my PC is equiped with sound card capable of producing 5.1 surround sound and my windows media player is playing my music files in full surround sound. iTunes on the other hand won't do it for some reason.
All my sound and audio options in control panel are on 5.1 surround sound so i don't know what's going on with my iTunes...also all other programs play my audio and video files in full surround sound.
How do i get the iTunes to play my music in 5.1 surround sound?

If the files are just standard stereo MP3 files, iTunes is only going to play them to two speakers. Windows Media Player may do some kind of procesessing of the stereo signal to simulate surround sound and play to 5.1 speakers, but iTunes does not do that.
iTunes will play true DTS 5.1 channel audio files under certain conditions, but those are special files, not just standard MP3s.

  • [Solved - kinda] Intel series 9 surround sound?

I just upgraded my system to 1150 with a new motherboard, Asus H97M-E.
In the manual it states that you can choose to map the line in and mic to the necessary channels for 5.1 surround sound in Windows.
Now my question, can this be done on Linux as well or should I just splash on a sound card? I did a bit of the Google but cannot seem to find anything that will help.

Well, my not so elegant fix:
    1.
    nano /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
    default-sample-channels = 6
    default-channel-map = front-left,front-right,rear-left,rear-right,front-center,lfe
    2.
    echo export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE=1 > ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/kmix_disable_pulse.sh
    chmod +x ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/kmix_disable_pulse.sh
    3.
Test if all works after loggin out and back in again:
    speaker-test -c 6 -D surround51
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4KYoQKAnoE
The downside to this is that you cannot control you soundcard through the SystemSettings anymore, but you can still use kmix and alsamixer.

  • [Solved] MSI GE70 2OE-014NE Surround sound

Hi Fellow Msi gamers and staff and moderators
i have a question i have one of two of these gaming  notebooks connected to our 3D TV via HDMI, and my question is how do i get surround sound to play as it should be?
i have the home theater system an older Sony with a DVD/Amplifier combo thing, the didgital out is connected to the TV´s Digital output, bur as i play a Movie i get only 2 channel how do i get the PC to play 5.1 so i can enjoy the Movies a bit better?
    best wishes
    Pekka

Well problem still remains i get soud in the rear speakers on some Movies but not all is it something  to do with new sound formats or is my surround system outdated as decoder wise i mean
it is a Sony home Theatre system with a dvd and a built in receiver or is it i need some special codecs to get it to work.
you see the Soundblaster thing stops as soon as the laptop is connected via hdmi to the TV and i only get 2.1 sound which i annoying.
but i guess there is nothing i can do right now about it
thx anywas guys i just gotta take it as it comes :D
does the newer MSI gaming laptops have 3D playback and perhaps better sound card?

  • Apple TV and 5.1 surround sound

I have just bought an Apple TV and love it. I want to have 5.1 surround sound though and do not have a clue what to buy! I have done my usual research and am even more confused than I was several hours ago.
As I have a Sony TV/Blueray player (and hate remotes) I want a system I can control from my current remote (this would use Bravia Sync).
    My issues are
    1. The output I'd use on the Apple TV (I guess the optical?) and would the Sony receiver be able to decode it?
    2. Does Apple TV decode its own 5.1 audio?
    3. If it does do I need a full receiver and could it work with a set of computer 5.1 speakers?
    4. If it doesn't which decoding system must the receiver have?
Oh and did I mention I'm a cheap-skate and don't want to pay much for the system! Although I will if I have to.

appletv will output 5.1 audio via HDMI or optical.
ideally you would connect the appletv to a suitable 5.1 amp (with suitable speakers).
the bluray player would also connect to the amp.
for me, i have all my devices connected to amp via HDMI and then have one HDMi cable running from the amp to the TV.

  • AVCHD and 5.1 Surround sound

I used iMovie 08 and read about Final Cut Express 4. Both programs downgrade the AVCHD surround sound to stereo when importing.
My question is: is Final Cut Pro 6 able to import AVCHD filed with their native captured 5.1 surround sound? My camera records in 5.1 surround (Sony HDR-TG3 / TG1) and it is not good I can only get stereo on my computer.
Do you know of any other solution that is able to do that?
    Thanks for any tips.

I guess I knew in the back of my mind that its necessary to transform and recode super compressed footage to a more usable high quality format standard thats more friendly and usable for editing, compositing, filters and effects, etc. because I can only imagine that to edit raw AVCHD would only be possible on a limitted scale and would require too many multiple core processors for unimaginable horrific tasks of decoding and recoding too often for certain editing criteria, that would both not be realistic and would degrade the footage with each recoding to AVCHD, also made problematic by the fact that I have read that AVCHD does not have proper time-code. Mind you unless I'm mistaken, I hear that Sony Vegas has full editing capability for AVCHD, not that this will help me now after having invested heavily in the latest MacBook Pro, Final Cut Studio, Shake 4.1, 1TB Time Capsule, Logic Studio, etc.. looks like I'll be with Apple for some time then (and I don't see myself ever switching back to the Windows platform either). However if this be true and possible with Sony Vegas, then maybe Sony could and should pass all there technical expertise and secrets for the AVCHD format to Apple, to help there hardware's (Sony's own AVCHD camcorders) full unrestricted compatibility with universal video editing programs, while hopefully retaining the 5.1 audio from source.
Maybe at the very least, I thought the final finished rendered output could be optionally recoded back to AVCHD (while keeping the Master Edit in Apple ProRes 422 format for future reference), of course there's only one reason for this converting back to AVCHD, which is that when arranged into the correct file/folder structure and placed on a normal DVD, you are actually able to play this normal DVD disc in a Blu-Ray player (i.e. PS3 or other) and get playback of the High Definition material. This is possible because the blu-ray player understands the AVCHD file/format and decodes it with its blu-ray layer ability and backward optical disc (DVD) compatibility and the fact that blu-ray players naturally have the HD outputs to their connected HD displays. The advantages is that you don't need blu-ray recorder/burner drives and that normal DVD (single layer) discs are cheap as chips, however the disadvantages is that the storage and hence the running time is considerably less (ie single layer DVD 4.7GB, dual layer blu-ray 50GB). I have been able to achieve this myself by using Sony's 'Multi-Function DVD Recorder VRD-MC5' that enables just that by means of linking the Sony TG3E/TG1 camcorder via USB straight to the Sony VRD-MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder where it then transfers the AVCHD footage digitally and purely in its original AVCHD format with no conversion and with no editing of the footage, straight to a DVD disc.. this being useful for 'both' backing-up and for straight HD viewing on a blu-ray player as previously mentioned.
It's true of the very large hard drive storage units now available at accessibly low prices, so I'm considering the WD MyBook Studio II at 2TB or MyBook Studio I at 1TB, Data Robotics Drobo is tempting but more costly and not sure their implementation of the new Firewire 800 on the latest 'drobo' will be fast enough as their stated spec on their website for the max sustained transfer speeds appear to be a bit less than that of, say, some others (like some Lacie Quadra's) but I could be wrong. I have not had a reply so far from Western Digital and Data Robotics after requesting some further specs by email.
I think I am a little worried from reading the effects that Final Cut Studio 2 may experience when dealing with the existence of 'Spanned Clips' in the AVCHD format and certain small issues that may arise with the video and audio playback timing after AVCHD has been logged and transferred to Apple's ProRes 422 encoding. I've not arrived at this stage just yet, so I'm hoping that the 'spanned clips may not be present and produced on my TG3E/TG1 camcorder. No doubt I'll soon find out.
The links explaining the additional issues with 'spanned clips' and incorrect clips, are:-

    and

  • Emu10k1 and 5.1 surround sound

    Hi all!
I try to enable my 5.1 surround sound with my Creative Labs Audigy 2.
I've run alsaconf without a problem. Sound works at all. I've rised Master, PCM, PCM Center, PCM Front, PCM LFE, PCM Surround, Front, Surround, Center, LFE and Synth to 100% via the alsa-mixer.
When I round the alsa speaker-test
    $ speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6
I just get sound from FrontLeft and FrontRight.
    $ aplay -Dsurround51 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav -c6
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
aplay: set_params:887: Channels count non available
Google helps me and said, that only stereo is supported...
I've had a look at the forum and created /etc/asound.conf with this content:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    route_policy duplicate
    No change.
    What can I do?
    Regards,
    Moritz

I see we've got the same problem... This setting is not working for me either, changing levels in alsamixer does nothing. I can hear only front left, right, and subwoofer, but sub has damned low volume... I'm using via82xx. Tryied probably everything, but no change.
    I don't understand it!!!

  • P Elements 3 and 5.1 surround sound

    Hi Everyone:
Forgive me if this question has been asked before: If I have a source for 5.1 surround sound audio, can it be plugged into a premier elements 3 project and output onto dvd in 5.1 surround or does PE3 convert it to stereo?
    Thanks
    Lucio

Version 3 is equipped for Dolby stereo only, Lucio. Most likely it will resample your 5.1 audio to stereo.

  • Audigy 4 (Non Pro) and center channel surround sound - from 2 channel aud

Hi all,?Is there a way to have voice coming from the center speaker during TV programs like you could using an external receiver with Pro Logic? I can't for the life of me, get my Audigy 4 to do this. I run MCE 2005 on a couple of machines in the house. On my other machine, with built in audio, I let the Purevideo decoder handle this and I get? a nice surround, complete with center channel voice on it while watching TV. On the machine with the Audigy 4, not only will it not give me the center channel while watching TV, but I can't get it to stop processing the sound so that I can simply use the decoding of the Purevideo Decoder... • How do I connect Apple TV and surround sound to my projector?

My current set up is that I have a projector connected to my Blu-Ray player. My surround sound speakers connect to my Blu-Ray player. They all came in the box together and the speaker wires all go into the Blu-Ray. Everything works perfectly.
However now I have bought an Apple TV and although I can play it through the projector, the sound is only through the projector and not the surround sound. I tried plugging the Apple TV in the HDMI in the projector and then connecting the Apple TV to the Blu-Ray via optical cable, but that didn't work.
In the back of the projector there is 1 HDMI port and an audio port but no optical port
In the back of the Blu-Ray, you have the speakers, the HDMI, the audio in and the optical port.
How can I connect everything so that I can use my Apple TV with surround sound?

The manual doesn't say anything an optical port on the BD ?

  • TS4107 I have to use the optical output to my receiver for my surround sound ( it does not decode HDMI). After updating the software on my Apple TV the optical no longer works. The HDMI to my TV works and provides sound to the measly TV speakers. WHY?

I updated my software as "recommended" and my optical output is not working anymore to my receiver and thus no surround sound. My HDMI to the TV still provides the picture and sound to the TV. My receiver only uses optical and was fine BEFORE the software was updated. How can I go back to the prior software or fix this? My Apple TV is the earlier 720P version. I have tried restarting on the Apple TV and then unplugging and reinserting all plugs to no avail. It provides no optical sound on Netflix, Youtube and other selections but does via HDMI only to the tinny TV speakers. ANY IDEAS?

GO to your Dolby Digital settings, and toggle the options.. Auto, On, Off. That worked for me, and a few other people.

  • No More Surround Sound on Blu-ray player after Upgrade in MediaSmart

When I used the Blu-ray player in my home theatre I selected the "HDMI pass through" mode to get surround sound. I came across some new movies that would not play and after the update from HP the player would simply freeze up as soon as there was audio present. I had to go into the task manager to shut it down.
MediaSmart works fine on the laptop, but it only freezes up when I use the "HDMI pass through" setting.
I have tried "HDMI pcm" mode and that doesn't work either. The Denon receiver shows there are five channels working but I only get stereo sound out of the front left and right speakers. This would indicate that the Blu-ray player is not outputting in 5.1 surrond sound and that the laptop and the Denon receiver is working fine.
Hp supports' solution was to reinstall the old driver or try a system restore. I know a system restore isn't going to do anything. The problem is in the new software. The new software did not work on my HDX18 when it was in Vista, it didn't work when I upgraded to Windows 7 and it doesn't on my new dv8.
I tried contacting CyberLink to let them know that the upgrade is giving problems, but I think they are ignoring me.
Personally I think that either HP or Cyberlink just forgot to add the drivers for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound.
If someone were to find a solution to this one I would be surprised. I am quite certain I covered every possibility, but you never know.
     Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

OK, I found a solution. SORT OF. I use the laptop to watch region "B" Blu-ray movies that I buy out of England. Rather than set Media Smart to region "B" I purchased software from SlySoft.com. When the software is running it removes the region code and all that annoying copy protection. Fox is the worst, followed by Walt Disney. (Pixar Animation and Buena Vista) One specific movie that would not play on the old Media Smart software was "Ice Age 3 Dawn Of The Dinosaurs. When I tried, a red window came up prompting me to go to Cyberlink for an update. Of course after that the movie would play, but I had no surround sound in my home theatre.
So now I use the old Media Smart  software and run SlySoft...no more red window...I have surround sound in my theatre through HDMI pass through.
The problem with this solution is that Slysoft costs around 114.00$ U.S. for a life time membership and free updates forever. HMMM.

surround sound works on all my other programs like windows media players and for some reason itunes doesnt detect it! i really need this to gert working. sounds ways better with surround sound

    Did some tests...
If I change the default audio device to the integrated audio device in the mainboard I get the same. Changing the bitrate in itunes or in the windows settings does not help either...
    Anyone has a similar problem?
Or anyone has a similar setup and actually gets surround sound from itunes?

  • Surround Sound on my Macbook Pro

Hey everyone, I have an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro. I currently have a mini-Toslink to Toslink cable running between my MBP and my Sony STR-KS360 home theater system. However, I still cannot get 5.1 Surround Sound to work. Whenever I go into system preferences it says that it is running through the digital output and then when I go into the Audio MIDI Setup it also says it is running through the digital output but when I try to configure speakers and select multichannel it only gives me the option of stereo. All surround sound options are greyed out.
I want to get surround sound working in a manner so that I can use Soundtrack Pro to mix in surround sound. If anyone has any suggestions, recommendations, or help please advise. Thanks all.

So, even though Soundtrack Pro has 5.1 mixing options it cannot work as output to be recognized?
Also, as a side note I tried playing a dvd through the DVD Player application with the setup exactly the same. I went into the preferences and set it to 5.1 surround sound and my receiver would recognize that there was a 5.1 output it still only played through the left, right, and subwoofer. It did not properly output to the rest of the speakers, it only recognized that there was indeed a signal of sorts going to it.
This is not my main issue as I have a blu-ray player that runs through the system and plays in surround sound fine. My main issue is that I want be able to mix audio in surround through Soundtrack Pro's surround capabilities.
