[Solved] mount NAS plugged in network port of computer

Hello!
Is there a possibility to do that? If yes, how?
I have a big load of data to copy on my NAS and I have only a 100mbit switch.
The USB port is made for attaching another drive to the NAS and not for plug in the computer.
Thanks in advance.

  • Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive?

Has anyone successfully used a "WD My Book for Mac" via NAS (plugged into USB port on router) as a Time Machine back-up drive? Apple support tech tried to tell me it wasn't possible and that the only NAS Time Machine could back up to is the Time Capsule, but I'm not buying it. I know it's doable, but I'm having a hard time figuring out which External HDDs will work and which ones won't.  If not My Book for Mac, is there an External HDD that will work? (Running OS X 10.9.1 - Mavericks, btw...)

Given the nature of backups, my recommendation has always been to use a strategy that is unequivocally supported by Apple. As you already determined Apple Support unequivocally informed you that your proposal will not work, unless your router is an Apple AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected to your Mac
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless when they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • [SOLVED] Mount NAS with writing permissions

I've got a MyBook World Edition NAS which i only use from time to time - so i decided to mount it manually.
To mount it convenient i've added the following to my /etc/fstab so i can mount it with "sudo mount /mnt/mybook":
    //IPC/Public /mnt/mybook cifs users,noauto,noatime,ip=192.168.1.200,username=**********,password=**********,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777
Mounting works well, but i don't get writing permissions.
    Shouldn't "file_mode/dir_mode" do the trick?

Thanks for the tip with the external .creds file :-)
    1) Don't get the point - need some further explanation
    2) Owner is root, i can change it to myself, but as soon the NAS gets mounted the owner changes to root
Does this maybe has to do with "sudo mount ..." Shouldn't I be able to mount without sudo since i added users to fstab?
    Ah...
    1) means is the share exported as read write execute from the NAS?
    2) Since the owner is root:root that may explain your problem.  What are the permissions on the share once mounted?  I'm guessing 744 or 644?
Instead of the file_mode and dir_mode, try a uid,gid to the mount line and match them up to your user.

  • [Almost Solved] Mount NAS for use with photorec

    Hi there,
I deleted some files on my NAS (WD MyBook World Edition) and want to give photorec a try - nothing serious but would be cool if it works.
Now the software should find the drive where my problem lies:
Normaly I mount the NAS via sudo mount /mnt/mybook/
    fstab entry:
    //IPC/Public /mnt/mybook cifs users,noauto,noatime,ip=192.168.1.200,iocharset=utf8,credentials=/root/.creds,uid=1000 0 0
How can I mount the NAS for temporary use with photorec dev/....
    Regards

Just wondering, if there is a faster way than photorec for my purpose? I've bought an USB enclosure for the drive now - Because it's an nearly full 2 TB drive the recovery takes ages (about 120 hours).
There are only 2 GB of free space on the drive and the deleted pictres are most likely in thes 2 gigs. Is there a programm (something for Windows is fine too) which let me recover only undeleted files and doesn't do a full recovery (have already limited photorec to jpg only)?
    FS is XFS.

  • NAS connection with Exadata on Network Port

    Hi,
What I found on exadata and NAS.
Can I connect the database servers to external storage?
Yes, you may use the network ports on the database servers to connect to external storage via NFS or iSCSI. However, the Fibre Channel Over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol is not supported or allowed.
My question is : What would be impact on performance if we connect Exadata with NAS on network port as NFS?
Does any one using ? I want to have all backup on disk and from disk to tape kind of.
    Thanks

If you can afford it look at using zfs over infiniband for the best bandwidth if you go for 73xx or 74xx models. You will also get dual controllers for full redundancy.
Oracle's benchmark backup figures of 7 tb an hour are based on this setup If you go for a standard or 10 gig nfs connection you will get considerably slower speeds.
    Thanks

  • LaserJet Pro 400 MFP not working on the network port that works HELP !!!

I have a new LaserJet Pro 400 MFP (M425dn)    USB works fine.  When I remove the USB and plug it into the network Port no network can be found - It doesn't pick up any activity.  So I test the network with my laptop ( connectivity is confirmed ). The network port is working properly- I plug in the LaserJet Pro 400 MFP (M425dn) and restart it -  no network activity. I tried several ports in the front office and the printer can't connect to the network.  BUT HERES THE FUNNY THING .  If I take the printer to the back room where the router/switch is  and plug it directly into the switch
( the same port as the front port )   it works !!!!!     so why doesn't the printer work at the front office network port,  where all the other devices work just fine using the same port ?  But it will work, at the  router/switch  using the same port  lol    this is drving me crazy
     any help ? ? ?

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/

  • Sun Cluster with Netapps - iSCSI quorum and network port

I am proposing Sun cluster with Netapps 3020C.
    May I know
    1) OS is Solaris 9. The SUN OSP says that we need to obtain an iSCSI license from Netapps. Is this the iSCSI initiator software for Solaris 9 to talk to the NAS quorum? Or do I need to purchased a 3rd party iSCSI initiator ?
    2) We provide 2 network ports for the Netapps private NAS LAN. Is it a must to cater another dedicated network port for the iSCSI communication with the quorum?
    3) If we need purchase a 3rd party iSCSI initiator, where can we get this? I have checked Qlogic and Cisco, they are both not suitable for my solution.
    Appreciate your help

    Hi,
    1) OS is Solaris 9. The SUN OSP says that we need to
obtain an iSCSI license from Netapps. Is this the
iSCSI initiator software for Solaris 9 to talk to the
NAS quorum? Or do I need to purchased a 3rd party
iSCSI initiator ?Have a look at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-7957/6mn8834r2?a=view
I read the "Requirements When Configuring NAS Devices as Quorum Devices"
section as this is the license for the iSCSI inititator software.
So you need to enable iSCSI on the netapps box and need to install a package from netapps (NTAPclnas) on the cluster nodes.
    2) We provide 2 network ports for the Netapps
private NAS LAN. Is it a must to cater another
dedicated network port for the iSCSI communication
    with the quorum?Have a look at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-0580/6n30eahcc?a=view#ch4_quorum-9
    I don't read such a requirement there.
    3) If we need purchase a 3rd party iSCSI initiator,
where can we get this? I have checked Qlogic and
Cisco, they are both not suitable for my solution.
Appreciate your helpI don't thibk you need such a 3rd party iSCSI initiator, unless this is stated in the above docs.

  • How can I change network port configuration default setting?

    Hello,
I am having trouble connecting to the internet. When I try to connect, it dials, rings, and then has a long tone, then disconnects. Preferences>Network>Assist Me>Diagnostics>Location>Network Port has Built in Ethernet chosen. I unchoose it, choose Internal Modem. It goes on to try to connect, than asks me if I have DSL or Cable (I don't) I choose no, asks me if there is anything else to restart, no, I choose. It then says to check configuration. I go back till the location page then continue, continue, then it connects. It won't stay selected to Internal Modem. I have checked its box and dragged it to the top (and unchecked and dragged Ethernet to the bottom). This happens 90% of the time but not always. I can connect to the internet, but have to go through this. I don't have Built in Ethernet.
    Thanks,
    Maria

Open Network preferences. Select Internal Modem from the list and click on the Configure button. Click on the PPP tab. Fill in the required information for your dial up ISP including your username and password (for your dial up account.) Check the box to save your password. Click on the Apply button. Click on the TCP/IP tab and select DHCP from the Configure IPv4 drop down menu, click on the Apply button. Click on the Modem tab and select the modem from the drop down menu that corresponds to the one you are using or have installed internally in your computer. Click on the Apply button. Quit Network preferences. This should have you all set. Use Internet Connect to initiate the dial up.

  • Can't update with new network port settings in airport extreme

I had 3 device settings under the Network tab in AirPort Utility. 3 in DHCP Reservations and 3 in Port Settings. They worked fine for a year or two. I just added a new device and added it's settings in both panels. I added the Public and Private TCP Port settings and saved. (When re-opened, they were still there). Clicked Update and the router rebooted, but when I re-opened the Port Settings for the new device both TCP Port fields were empty. After many more attempts, including changes to the port number, I tried removing and re-entering the settings for an existing device that had been working. Now, it's settings would also not survive an update and would also disappear. I reinstalled AirPort Utility and trashed Airport prefs, but nothing works. I tried through my laptop, but same problem, so not software. I'm about to do a hard reset of the router. Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on???

I think you need to provide more information about what you've done and what you're trying to do.
Did you assign a static LAN IP address to the NAS, what are your port forwarding entries, etc?

  • Network Port default setting

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. I click connect, it dials, tries for a while, then a message comes up check modem setting. I go to preferences, click network, click assist me, diagnostics, location, choose network port configuration. This is always on Builtin Ethernet, which I don't have. So I click Internal modem, continue, it dials again, then asks me if I have DSL, I say no, It asks me if I can restart anything else, no again. Then I click go back til I get to the location page again then continue, continue, continue. Then it connects to the internet. How can I get it to stop defaulting to Built in Ethernet and just stay on internal modem on the Network port configuration page??

Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I was wondering whether it had anything to do with the network I was using. The router I am using can't access the internet and I am using the basic 192.168.1.X setup with 255.255.255.0 as the mask.
My computer has an ip of 192.168.1.2 and the xbox has an ip of 192.168.1.3. However, I am still unable to ping the xbox or even see it show up in the network. I did notice that whenever I am using another router that is connected to the internet, I can see other windows based computers in the network tab in thunar under "windows network"
Also, I do have a username and password associated with the samba setup.. so I assume maybe that has something do with it. I checked the permissions of the share folder and it was root:root with read and write permissions. I know samba is working fairly well.. but for whatever reason I can't get the xbox to connect even while it is on the same local network.

  • VTDR-128 fx5600 - No Color Red on VGA plug (d-sub port)

okay, i have a couple other posts here and i've decided to clean up my plea for help a little bit because i've solved the worst of my problems and, being more educated, can explain things a little easier.
i will recap my experiance now:
2-3 months ago i bought my spanking new VTDR-128 fx5600 card from a well known vendor.  i was given a period of 2 weeks for vendor RMA, but i waited too long as this card was intended for a system i was building for someone else.  when we finally were able to test it:
1:  system would crash within five minutes, max.
2:  no color red output from the monitor plug (d-sub port?)
3:  bad, horrible artifacting in all games and even during low resolutions 2D windows usage.  after power off, card heatspreader could almost burn my finger if i touched it.
4:  color looked fine on both tv-out dongle and dvi > CRT adapter that came with the card, if only i could boot for more than a few minutes at a time
i wish i had taken pictures, but one day, i was convinced the card was "dead" and i decided to take the cooler off and put it on an older card i have.  i carefully removed the cooler front, then back, and noticed on the back, one of the ram chips was a smudge of thermal interface material (in the pins and such, on other components as well)
i was astonished, i jumped with glee, and spent 45 minutes with a fine bristled brush.  after many inspections with a magnifying glass, and almost half a can of maxell "blast away" canned air, i put the card in my computer, re-loaded the newer drivers, installed all the msi software, and proceeded to run benchmarks!
i was so happy i could pee my pants.  somewhere in the manufacturing process i think something got a little messed up and the thermal paste was smudged.  even with hefty overclocks the cooler doesnt feel NEARLY as hot as my old ti4200.
many people have been disappointed with performance from this card, but i am very impressed!  i was able to run halo before at ~20-30FPS, now i'm getting 50 and things are much prettier.  its added 4000-6000 to my aquamark score, and i went from 11000 to 16000 in 3Dmark2001SE.
the reason i'm posting again is because i want the vga plug to work.  nview dualview does not work with the DVI adapter and i use my TV for gaming.  so if i want to game i have to deal with the monitor having no color red.
this card has been tried now in 3 systems, with 3 different monitors and the color RED is not visible on any (with the vga plug (d-sub))
i am forced to believe nothing is wrong with my system, and it relies solely on a mistake made in manufacturing.  the card overheated and crashed and burnt before i took the heatspreader off, after cleaning the paste off it works perfectly.
so, maybe GlennVidia will be kind to tell me if:
MSI will help me fix or issue a replacement.  i doubt this has happened too many times before, i am probably one out of a million buying a graphics card with this mistake.
i've made many attempts at contacting MSI support, and i've read through faqs and KB so many times i could write an encyclopaedia.
do you think MSI would even admit a mistake, i am betting that first they just tell me "i voided my warranty".  that makes me want to cry!  i emailed them 5 times so far, and they only tell me to "RMA with vendor" and "test in another systems" even after i explained everything...
    ::sigh::
i'd do anything to get this card working, i love it regardless of it's redless vga!

All Desktop Environments / Window Managers rely on X.  Man pages are helpful, possibly some headaches ahead as I fought a dual-monitor display this way.

  • Accessing host port on computer-to-computer network

    Hi,
I'm able to successfully create a computer-to-computer network on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard), to which clients can connect, however, I'd like the clients to access a specific port on the host, but this doesn't seem to work by default. Moreover, even the local connection to the intended port on the host, using the localhost as address, is blocked. Any thoughts on how to overcome this issue (if possible at all) are welcome.
    Best regards,
    Hugo Silva

Some more details on what problem(s) you're looking to solve and related background, and on how you're currently attempting to solve it?
Please describe which ports are the target, which protocols are involved, and how you are attempting to target those specific ports both on the client set-up and the server's service set-up.
Some protocols honor DNS SRV records.  Others do not.  And various services have specific and different ways to select specific ports.
And the background on the problem might help us provide you with an alternative approach; something that might not have been considered.

  • Open additional network ports while running FileVault

I'm trying to run web based applications using non-standard network ports on my MacPro and having issues accessing the services locally from the laptop it's self.
I've enabled the builtin FileVault to encrypt the SSD to protect the laptop along with enabling the firewall, after which I've experienced the problem. Disabling the firewall doesn't allow access to the services however disabling the FileVault allows services on network ports to be accessible again.
This leads me to believe FileVault isn't just 'Disk Encryption' as I initially thought, but includes elements of firewall-ing non Apple approved applications/ports. There seems to be very little information about this anywhere on the web, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.
If this is the case, are there any commands that will allow me to 'register' an application or port with Mavericks as being allowed?

Thanks Linc that's what I needed confirmation of, I'll keep digging and comment back once I've solved.
