[SOLVED] Mounting /home on an NTFS volume

Hi all,
After having some issues with other Linux distros on my new laptop, I decided to give Arch a try -- after all, it seems like everybody who uses it loves it. For the most part, things went well, but after installation I noticed that all of my files are owned by root and sit in the root group.

Obviously, the permissions mean I can edit these files freely from my user account. But still, every other distribution I have used for a reasonable amount of time -- RHEL, Mint, OpenSUSE -- has set the owner, group, and permissions completely differently. Is this normal for Arch, or did something go wrong during my installation?

Much to the contrary graysky, it's not offtopic. It's why all the files in his home dir are root:root. As such, his whole point is moot.
Typical case of user error.
Even if you like NTFS, there's no point in using it over native Linux filesystems. There are only drawbacks to using NTFS on Linux. There are better ways to share your data than to make your homedir NTFS - like creating a separate data partition on Windows and mounting that somewhere on Linux (but NOT on /home).
rhallen: please change your topic title to reflect what's really going on . Now it's misleading.

  • [Solved] Displaying NTFS volume in Computer?

I've searched endlessly and can't find a solution so far. My NTFS drive is mounted via fstab using ntfs-3g, but the the icon doesn't show up in Computer.
Would it be possible to make my NTFS drive show up in Computer (Gnome)? I hate having to navigate to /mnt/Backup each time instead of seeing it in Computer when using nautilus.

  • Writing to a NTFS volume

    Dear all,
a month ago I bought an external drive (WD - My Passport) to store my iPhoto library as it was taking too much disk space. Although I've read that Snow Leopard does not provide default writing capabilities for NTFS, everything worked fine since a week ago, when I suddenly noticed that the volume apparently lost its writing permissions.
I've seen a bunch of references talking about changing the fstab, but diskutil is not providing me any UUID! I've also seen that some people solves this problem with NTFS-3G, but I've it looks like it does not support 10.6.
Any hint on that? Since then I cannot update my iPhoto library and is being really annoying!
    Cheers

No offense, but I could never get it to work reliably for me. I admit I have not used it for almost a
year (since 10.5.x). It would work acceptably at times, but other times it would be slow as molasses
(copying files) or Finder would be lock up. Sometimes when copying from NTFS volumes OS X would
lock up tight and the only way out was to cut the power. I noticed the problems would surface
mostly when some other Mac Fuse dependent programs were being run at the same time (such
    as Parallels Desktop).
To be fair though, I suspect the Apple 10.5.x Hard disk driver (for my machine) as being partly to
blame as most of the external disk mounting and lockup problems disappeared when I upgraded
    to Snow Leopard.
I suspect Mac Fuse also. I have had various versions of Mac Fuse that didn't work well on my
machine either. When I first put Snow Leopard on my machine I had to use Tomas Carnecky's
compiled version of MacFuse 2.1.7. to get True Crypt working. Now they updated True Crypt and
I have had to use the new Public 2.1.5 Beta version of Mac Fuse to get the updated True Crypt
    working.
Being a software developer I am sure you are aware of the endless problems various hardware
combinations and configurations can dish out. No offense, but I had to switch to Paragon NTFS
to be able to get a solution that worked reliably on my machine.
Some folks use your NTFS-3G product without any problems whatsoever, but like I said,
different hardware combos yield different results.
I have not tried Tuxera, actually I had not even heard of it until a couple of days ago.
The name is cute, how (if you don't mind telling) or who, came up with the label?
Linus Torvolds and that familiar Penguin comes to mind when I here the name.
It's not because NTFS-3G is free, that I don't use it.
I am a die hard "free" fan, I love "free", as in free lunch, free software, free money and of course
    free BEER!

  • Unable to read NTFS volume on OS 10.4.7

    Hi All,
I have an Maxtor drive formated as a NTFS volume, which works well with my PC. It is my understanding that in OS 10.4 (or 3) I should be able to mount this drive as a read-only drive on my Mac. When I connect the drive to the Mac it says that the drive is un-moutable and asks me either to format, ignore or eject. Can anyone help?
    THanks

Run WhatSize and see what it shows. People have found what should have been 4k in /Volumes only the drive didn't mount, and now there is 60GB under the Volumes directory.
Look in /private/var for tmp also.
Any P2P BitTorrent or something running and putting software or video in hidden directories?
I run fsck regularly, or boot from another drive and repair the drive. Only time I repair permissions is before or after installs, or if the "Ignore Ownership" was turned back on (which should be off).
25GB is close to 10% free space, which according to MicroMat, is about when hfs+ can run into too many file fragments for the directory to handle, and you end up with a lot or corrupt directory and files aren't available.
If you have Applejack, delete the cache files, but at least run fsck, and do some deep cleaning for now, backup with CCC, do an erase, zero the drive, and restore. But make sure you have a backup soon.
Besides WhatSize there is also Path Finder 4 and OmniDiskSweeper than can help identify where disk space is being used.

  • How can i write on ntfs volume ?

Can you help me to mount ntfs volume in R/W.
    Thank you!

But if one day Apple add support of ntfs write
I seriously doubt Apple will ever do that. It isn't worth their time to put that much development into supporting NTFS write capability.
Paragon went through Microsoft's validation testing and approved it.
Note that I already stated NTFS-3G is free. Also note that there are two different versions of NTFS-3G on the page I linked to. Tuxera NTFS is not free, but is twice as fast as the free version towards the bottom of the page. Both support 64 or 32 bit OS X startup.

Please use code tags.  If you don't know how to do this, click the 'BBCode' link on the bottom of the page for instructions (there are all kinds of neat formatting tricks included as well).

  • External USB NTFS volume

Actually Arch (up-to-date, dbus and hal running) detects that external USB drive as reiserFS, and mounts it accordingly... (= just a couple of directories visible). It's a single NTFS 200G volume, I just want proper read-only access under Arch (no "captive" and such stuff installed).
Any idea on how to modify configuration files (leaving aside static fstab entries) to access it properly?

khazdar wrote:I think you need to compile the ntfs module.
The system can read NTFS volumes- actually I have no problems mounting an XP partition present.
I just don't want to create a permanent fstab entry for the USB disk, but rather let fstab-sync manage it, but I am clueless about the proper hotplug settings.

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Re: Lion Update 10.7.2 Home Directory on another volume

    Hi all,
Fought this for a few days.
Machine MacMini 2007 with 500GB Hard drive installed.
On OS X 10.6.x and OS X 10.7.1.x I had moved my home directory to another volume, as my Home directory was initially as big, and is now bigger than my boot drive.  Installed 10.7.2 upgrade and after macine rebooted told me it could not find my home directory.
    1.  External volumes were not showing on left panel of Finder or on desktop as was in previous version.
Problem:  Obviously 10.7.2  did not preserve previous preferences and machine setup.  Did not see that notice in release notes.
Solution:  went into finder preferences and selected options to set those.
    2.  Ran Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility on all Volumes.
Solution:  some drives had some errors, but everything repaired just fine.
    3.  Opened Terminal and checked external volume with my home directory on it /Volumes/Users/<HomeDirectoryName>, all files seemed to be there and intact
    4.  Opened Settings/Users & Accounts, right clicked on login, Home directory was set to the correct location.
    5.  In Terminal performed the following steps, and verified directories:
             >cd /
             >ls -la
             > cd Volumes
             > ls -la
             > cd Users
             >ls -la
Directory showed Login Name symbolically linked to location on external drive
Problem:   No home directory files (i.e. Documents, Pictures, Movies were all empty)  Dock showed up as if new install, no preferences remembered
    6.  Called Apple support line, finally got senior technician on line, and had to argue a bit with the technician that I wanted to have my Home Directory on another volume.  After we settled on that fact, and review of previous steps, he had me change the Home directory setting which we did several times.  After changing /Volume/Users/<LoginName> a couple of times and getting Users1 and Users2 directories created he convinced me that the problem was using /Volumes/Users/ anything for my external volume.  We then created a new partition by splitting the drive, and I proceeded to copy to a new partition called MyUsers.  Left apple support while approximately 700 GB were copied to new partition.
    7.  Let computer cook until next morning.  Tried setting home directory in Users Accounts/Login/Advanced to /Volumes/MyUser/<LoginName> still no joy!
    8.  Took Shower -- always get best ideas in shower!  went back re-read MacWorld Articales on moving Home directory, and TUAW article.
    9.  Determined the problem.
    10. Problem:  OSX 10.7.2 creates a new home directory on the boot drive, even if you symbolically link to another one.  Thus the Users1 and Users2 directories on the boot drive root directory.  Settings/User Accounts/<login>/Advanced does not do this properly
Solution:  Delete the boot drive login directory, no matter what it points to and symbolically link to external directory.
              Open Terminal Session:
                 >cd /
                 >sudo rm -rf <LoginName>
                 >sudo ln -s /Volumes/<VolumeName>/<LoginName> <LoginNme>
                Restart computer
Note:  VolumeName =Users works just fine.
If Engineering will check to see if an existing directory exists for the Home directory and set it up, then the problem would not have happened.
Hope this helps Engineering and others with this problem.

I tried something a bit different that worked (so far). I always have a second Admin account that has its home directory still on the main Mac HD. I logged into that account and opened system prefs. Then I found my account and right clicked on it to get the "Advanced options." I reset the account's home folder (which said it was on the external drive) to the internal Mac HD.
Logged out of Admin account and back into my account, which showed as a new user account. Logged out and back in as Admin, then back to system prefs and "Advanced options" for my real account. Changed the path to my home folder on the external drive. Logged out of Admin, back to my account and it was fixed.
Hope this helps anyone having the same problem.

  • ITunes Music Previously On NTFS Volume

    Greetings,
I have previously saved the contents of my iTunes to an NTFS volume (Win-7 on a PC) and now need to copy them over to 10.9.3. While OS-X will only read these files (which is fine for copy purposes) I am wondering if, once copied, anything need to be done to the perms prior to launching iTunes.
Current version of my OS-X is 10.9.4.
Any assistance greatly appreciated, and thank you.

Nothing aside from copying them to a writable drive is needed.

  • Mounting more than 2 NAS volume on startup

I am trying to mount a bunch of NAS volumes on startup. Problem is I can only have 2 volumes mounted. Let's say I add Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3 as Login items for a user, when I restart I only get Volume 1 and Volume 2 mounted. If I check the login items prefs, I have Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 1 again (instead of Volume 3). I tried on different computers even with different OS (10.9). This is very annoying Any idea??

    Hi Toke Lahti;
With the additional information you just provided, all of the talk about RAID might have been a red herring in this case. If you will look here, you will notice that it might be the version of FCP you are using.
On the subject of your RAID, I still say that your configuration with partitions that are being used in RAID arrays is not the best solution. If it were my system I would seriously into changing the configuration so that you are not using partitions.

    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • [SOLVED] My /home and /boot partition show on my desktop; not mounted

I'm guessing these two fie systems aren't mounted  and the computer is seeing them as separate volumes?
So I guess I made a mistake during the install. This kind of explains a few things because when updating my kernel GRUB wasn't being updated as if the /boot partition wasn't mounted. I had to completely reinstall GRUB to have it point to the right kernel.
Is there a way to fix this and get these mounted how they need to be? Probably something with my fstab file?
When I installed I mounted my root, created /mnt/boot and /mnt/home, then mounted those to their own partitions that I had created.
I generated my fstab and checked it, and everything looked fine. I just don't know why everything else is just fine, but /boot and /home aren't mounted?
My partition scheme is GPT and looks like
    /dev/sda1 -- bios boot
    /dev/sda2 -- /boot
    /dev/sda3 -- /
    /dev/sda4 -- /swap
    /dev/sda5 -- /home
I used UUIDs if that makes any difference.
    Thanks.

All right. I did what bstaletic said, and performed option 3 of his suggestions. My fstab file is restored but now when I start lightdm I get to my login screen, login, and have a black screen with just a cursor. All I did was run the install media, mount each partition (starting with root first). Then I turned my swap on.
    After that, I ran
    genfstab -U -p /mnt > fstab
I checked the fstab file, it looked like this
    # /dev/sda3
    UUID=c2d39ee2-e1c4-4989-9937-91fad2951d67 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=9cd92417-c4c0-40c7-9de3-3b65b896e36b /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=db8633d3f-0cb2-49dc-9792-356ad37ace58 /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    # /dev/sda4
    UUID=00d4f1cd-cc6c-4dd3-B4c7-67da333205ea none swap defaults 0 0
So I unmouted everything and turned swap off and went back into my system. The fstab file matched the output above. I started lightdm so i could get into xfce to see if the volumes were no longer on my desktop. However, now I get a black screen with a cursor. I let it sit for a while, but I ended up going into a tty and rebooting. Same issue. Black screen and cursor. I can see and login to lightdm just fine, but not my xfce DE.
I did try reinstalling lightDM and xfce4 and xfce4-goodies. Not xorg though. I'll try reinstallign it and see what that does.
