[solved] My Optical Drive doesn't work.

Hello, first i should thank the community for the awesome job they've made on arch linux and everything around it.
Secondly, i installed arch linux two days ago, it was my first attempt and it seems to work flawlessly with gnome, compiz, etc. i even managed to master pacman and yaourt.
But i have a little issue my optical doesn't work in gnome, i can't even see it on the devices. (It worked great on the installation). Any ideas?

OK, so start with creating a mount point, like
sudo mkdir -p /media/dvd
-- and then feed your drive with a disk, and see what happens. (I suppose it will mount it automatically, but lets see...)
Edit: Just in case your system needs a cdrom directory, you can create a symlink to your /media/dvd,  like this:
sudo ln -s /media/dvd /media/cdrom

If your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work.

  • Optical drive doesn't work all the time

My optical drive doesn't mount movies i bought on dvds. IT'S like it has a mind of its own, it only plays movies when it feels like it and forget any install dvds like Snow Leopard, printers etc...! What's the problem with it? I cleaned it and all my dvds are like brand new, no scratches or any thing.

  • Optical drive doesn't work after installing itunes 11.0.5.5

After updating to iTunes 11.0.5.5 my optical drive does not work. I have put the same CD in another PC and it works fine. When I right click on the optical disc drive in 'Computer' I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." If a CD is in the drive, the drive will either keep popping open or not open at all on its own. The CD will not open in any other player such as Windows Media Player either.

    I read this article:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php/CD/DVD_drives_disappear_after_install ing_iTunes
I did not have any AFS drivers.
This is what I did and my optical drive is now working:
    1. Backed up iTunes
    2. Unistalled iTunes
    3. Tried to install iTunes 10.7 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    4. When iTunes tried to launch I received the message "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
    5. My computer would not recongize the optical drive at all now
    6. I re-installed iTunes 11.0.5 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    7. All my iTunes data is there and my optical drive works now
Note: I should clarify that before uninstalling iTunes 11.0.5 my optical drive worked sometimes. It would play maybe one song, both in iTunes and Windows Media Player and then stop working. The drive would also pop open on its own whether there was a disc in there or not. Also sometimes I had to manually open the drive with a paper clip.

  • After installing Mavericks, the optical drive doesn't work for movie DVDs, program install DVDs, or music CDs.

The disc loads but is immediately spit back out. I am fairly sure this is an OS X software issue, since blank CDs don't exhibit this behavior. As far as I know, the drive was working fine before installation of OS X 10.9 (actually the machine is at 10.9.1). The machine is a Mac Mini late 2009 with built-in optical drive. I have seen some other discussion of this or a similar issue in the Support Communities and the only suggested fix I have seen is to reset the SMC. I tried that, with no change in the behavior.
Also, the main OS X support page says that Mavericks includes 30 days of free support after install of the product, but when I try to follow any of the links on this page to find the "free" support, all I get are pages that require entering the serial number of the machine, which then tell me that the support for the machine has expired. Anybody know how to access the "free" support for Mavericks? It has definitely been less than 30 days since we installed it on this machine.

After browsing a lot of the "More Like This" links, it appears that a LOT of people are having this problem. It may be that a simple reset of the SMC fixes the issue on later (e.g., maybe >= 2010) Macs. Anybody been able to resolve this issue on a late 2009 Mac Mini?

  • I need to install osx I have the snow leopard disc but my optical drive doesn't work.

I made the rushed decision to completely scrub my Mac and reinstall the software again. I bought the computer about 4 years ago from a student at my university who was leaving. When I got it lion was installed already. Now I can use the install disc as my optical drive is broken and I can't recover from the internet as it wants the apple I'd from the original person. I can't find an uncorrupted file to USB boot my machine . has anyone got any ideas before I bite the bullet and get my CD drive repaired .

Purchase an external CD/DVD optical drive.
There are cheap ones (under$50) that'll last anywhere from a year to three years or more expensive(over $50 and higher) that will last much longer.
Not all optical drives are Mac compatible.
Most Mac compatible drives you will only find to be purchased online.
Here are two on Amazon.com that are cheap and Mac compatible

  • [Solved] Epson printer driver doesn't work

Trying to get printing from my Epson 2200.  CUPS downloaded a driver but it does not work.  I know the usb connection and printer work as they print correctly under Ubunutu 9.04.  Unfortunately, I can't find a suitable driver anywhere on the net.
This is a showstopper for me.  I don't have the cash to buy a new printer.  Hope someone has an idea about this othewise it's back to Ubuntu.

If your printer is an epson stylus photo 2200 then install gutenprint, restart cups and add your printer using the correct driver.
    For reference have look here:
    http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cg … Photo_2200
If this is not your printer just click printers on the left side and search for your printer then you'll get the driver package you need to run your printer.

  • [SOLVED] Broadcom 4331 driver doesn't work

    Hi,
I installed kernel 3.2 from testing hoping that it would fix the wireless issue I was having with my macbook pro 8.1.  After the restart, I still don't see the wireless connection in ifconfig. Is there any module I should load manually? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Last edited by spiritwalker (2012-01-17 19:00:30)

4331 is supported by the b43 module in the kernel (I've been using 3.2-rc* just so I could get wireless working on my MBP 8.2).  I had to change the config like this and then recompile to get it to work:

  • What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?

QuestionWhat can I do when if my laptop CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 8?
AnswerNote: For help with this issue in Windows 7, please see this article.
To get your CD or DVD drive working correctly, try these suggestions in the order listed.
    Reinstall the Driver
Hold the Windows key and press the 'x' key to open a menu in the lower-left. In this menu, select "Device Manager." Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives." Right-click the entry for the CD/DVD drive nested under "DVD/CD-ROM drives," then select "Uninstall." Finally, restart the computer. The computer will reinstall the drivers for the drive.
    Power Cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with some hardware problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Unplug all wires and peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery). If the model does not have a removable battery, check your user's guide to determine if you have a pinhole reset on the bottom. If you do, press this.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
    Reattach the battery if removed.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
Start the computer and test the drive

    System Recovery
If the System Restore doesn't solve the issue, you could try a System Reset. Resetting your laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state is a great way to eliminate software as a possible cause of the problem. Note that doing a system reset will return the laptop to its default conditions, completely wiping your data. Information on how to perform a system recovery can be found in your user's guide.

  • Optical drive doesn't disks from a particular brand

I am trying to burn some video files to 10 DVD's, but my optical drive doesn't recognize 4 of the DVD's I use (which are all of the same brand and freshly bought) - and had a very difficult time with the other 6. DVD's of other brands he reads and burns fine as well as my rewritable CD which I've used a million and one times and is scratched all over.
The 10 DVD's work fine in the Windows PC and Laptop I have, just not in my MacBook...
Is there any way I can get the drive to be able to burn the other DVD's?
Below the stats of the optical drive with one of the 6 burned DVD's in it:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZF1E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Type: DVD-RW
    ID: INFOMEDIA
    Blank: No
    Erasable: Yes
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: No
    Write Speeds: 1x, 2x

Other than trying to burn at a lower speed I suspect that there is little you can do. You could try a third-party disc burning application like Toast but that would be a lot more expensive that just trying several different types of media.
If you have an Apple Store nearby then you could probably take your disc to the store and try them in another MacBook at the store (it looks like you are using RW media, so you could rewrite them after these tests).
Of course, if after trying a few different brands you still find that you are having problems then you may just have a hardware problem with your MacBook's Superdrive. I suppose that you could also have a software conflict. Have you tried creating a new user account to see if the disc can be burned there (as a test)?

  • MBP late 2011 disc driver doesn't work

Before I updated the OS to 10.9.1, my disc driver worked well and I usedbootcamp to set up WIN 7 for several times. But afterwards, when I tried to reset the bootcamp win7, I did like I always did, delete the former os harddrive part, then I started to reset the win7, I found that the disc driver doesn't work.
When I insert a disc, it would be push out whatever disc I insert, os disc, cd, dvd. It just doesn't work.
I don't know if it is broken or just beacuse of the new 10.9.1
    I need some help.
Thanks for you all who are willing to see this.

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
    Please someone help!

Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running.

  • Brand new Mac Pro.. CD DRIVE DOESN'T WORK!

I just set up my new Mac Pro yesterday, and the cd/dvd drive doesn't work. It worked once, when I was installing a printer, but it made a really bad noise, and now whenever I put any cd or dvd in, it doesn't even recognize it or react.
I don't know what to do.
I know I have a warranty so somebody from apple should be able to help me, but I can't even reach anybody on the customer support phone number.
Does anybody know a way to fix this?

Try depressing the SMC RESET button for 10 seconds, small round button under drive #4 in the rear (with unit unplugged).
