[Solved] Nautilus (desktop) autostart in KDE?
How is this possible?
- not in ~/.config/autostart nor ~/.kde4/Autostart/
- ran as user when checked with ksysguard
Last edited by algorythm (2010-02-15 17:01:24)
Uhhhh... it went away with just re-enabling (disable -> enable) _GNOME_ autostart programs with 'gnome-session-properties'... This is like the crazyest thing.

Nautilus Desktop appears under KDE
Hi,
Here is my problem : I just installed KDE and notice that when i switch from 2nd to 3th desktops, or when i close my session, nautilus is launched behind.
It's a consequence of modification i've made a while ago when gnome3 was release, i tried to have openbox, also try to have compiz as standalone. For that, i've made script containing mauchers for Cortina (wallpaper changer), tint2, nautilus, gnome-terminal.
Each of them now launch at ked startup (but not with gnome shell). I tried to delete all file involved (xinitrc, reference in gnome-session-properties), but stil got 2-3 cortina launching, nautilus behind KDE, etc.
Search string among "cortina" among file didn't get any usefull match.
Two questions then :
- Any way to find the file using the PID ?
- Does anyone as a file in mind that could be involved ?
Thx folks,
RSI'm confused: did you create your own script to do this? Typically, .desktop files for autostart apps appear under ~/.config/autostart when using GNOME or KDE, and can just be deleted. If you created your own script, it should just be a matter of no longer running that script at startup, right?

[SOLVED] NO desktop effects in KDE 4.7.0 with OpenGL as backend
Hey all,
After upgrading from KDE 4.7 RC2 (4.6.95) to 4.7.0, Kwin desktop effects work no more (with OpenGL as backend). I tried upgrading catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7, removing all Kwin related config files and even a new user, but nothing changed. I'm using kdebase-workspace 4.7.0-3 from [kde-unstable] repo. Should I wait for an update, install kdebase-workspace from testing repo or what?
Last edited by Pyruzan (2011-07-29 17:08:24)You are using a version with OpenGL ES enabled. But this doesn't seem to work with ATI cards.
At least not with Catalyst: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 53#p966953 looks like radeon works.
Use kdebase-workspace 4.7.0-2 from testing instead.

[SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6
Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
plasmapkg -l
If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
Hi all,
I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
plasmapkg -l
in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:

[Solved] Desktop Zoom in KDE using dbus-send
Hi,
I am trying to use dbus to use the KDE zoom-in/out feature. I need this to assign mouse-based shortcuts as described here
Using dbus-monitor, I got the following output when pressing the default shortcut for KDE-zoom:
signal sender=:1.5 -> dest=(null destination) serial=1152 path=/component/kwin; interface=org.kde.kglobalaccel.Component; member=globalShortcutPressed

string "globalshortcutpressed"
string "kglobalaccel"

int64 0
method return sender=:1.11 -> dest=:1.5 reply_serial=1153

But I can't figure out how to use this info to actually send the zoom-in message with dbus-send. Can anyone help me with this?
Last edited by codemon (2010-10-13 05:45:58)So I resume:
yaourt -S xbindkeys
xbindkeys --defaults > $HOME/.xbindkeysrc
Then edit with your favorite text editor the file ~/.xbindkeysrc and add before the end those lines:
# Zoom in
"qdbus org.kde.kglobalaccel /component/kwin invokeShortcut "view_zoom_in""
m:0x50 + c:133 + b:4
# Zoom out
"qdbus org.kde.kglobalaccel /component/kwin invokeShortcut "view_zoom_out""
m:0x50 + c:133 + b:5
Restart xbindkeys to apply the new shortcut:
killall xbindkeys && xbindkeys
Now you can fully enjoy the zoom effect and add xbindkeys into Autostart kde systemsettings tab.
Enjoy^^.
P.S: the shortcut I used in those line is meta key + scroll up for zoom in and meta key + scroll down for the zoom out.

[SOLVED] Desktop Weird After KDE 4.9 Upgrade
I really wish I could have come up with a more descriptive title for this post, but I don't really know what to call what's going on. I don't even know how to explain it, so I'll let a screenshot do the talking.
This is what my desktop looks like after the upgrade.
Last edited by jlacroix (2012-08-08 01:49:16)ElderSnake wrote:
I wish I had a helpful answer for you. Did you delete the .kde4 folder after the upgrade? Of course then you would lose your customizations but it's a common thing after a major upgrade in KDE I think.
Honestly I never deleted anything though and the upgrade seems to have gone really smoothly, and I have quite a few customizations (which is why I risked trying it without deleting the config folders)
That used to be the case where you needed to delete the .kde4 folder when upgrading, but the last four major releases didn't require that for me. I'd rather not delete that folder if I don' t have to.
The problem is on my desktop. My laptop was smooth. I used the same image for both, but the only real difference is that my desktop uses dual monitors. Maybe 4.9 doesn't like that anymore? -
[SOLVED]Gnome desktop and KDE menu suddenly gone
I run Arch on a second machine with both KDEmod and Gnome installed. When logging in today Gnome desktop was gone (wallpaper, icons, etc), but the panels were still there. All applications seem to function normally. Switching to Kdemod brought the following result: Desktop and icons are still visible, panels too, just all menu entries and the Konqueror and home icon in the panel are gone. I can still call up applications from the cli.
The "kmenuedit" command gives me the following error: "... could not read from /home/raisuli/menu/applications-kmeduedit.menu" which is not surprising because the file doesn't exist (anymore?).
Should I just reinstall Gnome and KDEmod or could there be another way?
Last edited by Raisuli (2008-05-05 20:44:18)hmm, i'm not sure what could have happened
maybe you can get them back if you re-install gnome-menus, archlinux-menus ,, i don't think kde comes with any as a pkg.
you might also be missing /usr/share/applications, most of the entries also come from desktop files in that directory -
Does anybody have working desktop effects in KDE 4.1? [SOLVED]
I had them working at one point, then after upgrades last week of nvidia, kernel, they no longer work.
Last edited by nirvanix (2008-11-05 15:49:59)I solved my own problem by reinstalling the WHOLE system. That was the only way I could get it to work again. I tried removing and reinstalling KDE4 and the nvidia drivers, but that didn't work. There must have been something about the way the Arch packages were installed/uninstalled that borked something/

[solve] change desktop wallpaper!
hello,
im using openbox and i added my .fehbg to my autostart file in the openbox folder. i had the problem, that some other instance is changing the bnackground after the autostart file, so my preferred picture only stayed for 1 second. for now i solved this by adding a sleep function, so that the execution of ~/.fehbg is after the influence of the other instance. but id like to solve this in a wy, that doesnt make my desktop background jump around at the startup!

[SOLVED] snapshot of window in KDE
Hello.
How do I make a snapshot of window in KDE by a keyboard shortcut? I tried Alt+PrintScreen and it doesn't work. By PrintScreen I can capture the fullscreen (by Ksnapshot), but I don't know how to capture a window by the shortcut...
Anyone can help me?
Thanks a lot!
Last edited by ancient_archer (2011-10-20 13:45:13)Well, in fact I changed the command in KDE Control Panel (Shortcuts and gestures) → Own shortcuts → Preset Actions → and on the right on the Action card, I modified the command to: ksnapshot --current.
Now it snapshot only a current window, not the whole desktop after pressing the PrintScreen. Problem solved :-)

[SOLVED] No GTK themes on KDE
Good morning.
I'm having a rather odd problem, one which I have yet to encounter.
I use KDE as a desktop, and when I start a GTK program using KDE tools (such as a launcher, or KDE's run command prompt) the program starts without being themed.
When I start the programs from a terminal, they are themed properly.
Has anyone a clue as to what's wrong with my setup?
Thank you.
Last edited by sweiss (2007-04-21 07:00:21)Oh, sorry.
It was a bad environment variable - gtk-qt-engine generated a file in my ~/.kde/env directory which manipulated an environment variable. Deleting this file solved this issue. -
[Solved] XFCE Desktop update...
Hello all agian.
I am using conky in XFCE and play my music collections with mpd now. In conky I added mpd status including song name and so on.
My problem is, when I play a song it shows the artist/title on the screen. If a song's title is shorter then the previous song conky update that text but on the desktop there's still text left from the old song.
For example:
Song 1:
MPD: [1.28/3.24] Artist - A very long song title for this song
Song 2
MPD: [0.08/2.12] Artist 2 - A short title ong title for this song
The part in italics is NOT removed as I switch song.
Can I make either conky or xfwm to update the desktop when I switch song?
(EDIT: I've read some about the FAM daemon that is used by several desktop env. Can it be the one I miss as desktop is not updating? Do XFCE make use of it?)
(EDIT 2: I searched and found http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31737, tried it, but nono, not updating, fam is running and so on..)
(EDIT 3: Case closed. Installing FAM, get that daemon running, restart of xfce solved it it seems, Mental note #2345: Check ALL possible solutions before spamming a forum..)

Can you log in at another console (ctrl-alt-f2)? If you can, try deleting these two folders entirely:
~/.cache/sessions/
~/.config/xfce4/
and then reboot. If that does not help, try reinstalling Xfce.
There is more information in the wiki here.

[solved] Issue with conky and Kde 4
I have a small issue with conky and KDE 4.2. I start conky with a script which I stored under ~/.kde/Autostart. The script is simple and looks like this..
conky -c ~/.conkyrc_kde4
This works fine. But when I restart the first KDE and check with ps, I have 2 instances of conky running. The instances keep on growing with the number of restarts.
I think kde tries to restart all the apps which were running when the session was terminated. Is there a way to change this behavior in general or all the programs or for only a specific program like conky ?
