[SOLVED] Need Some Tips on Solid State Drive

Hello everyone. I need a few tips on my solid state drive, to make sure I have everything configured correctly, and if there is anything I should change. I followed the Wiki, and took a lot of time to make it as perfect as I can, but I guess I need a little sanity check.
First, I followed the Wiki to align my SSD. Here is the output of fdisk -lu:

Is that aligned properly? I've heard that all you have to do is make the first partition start on cylinder 2048 but just want to be sure.
Second, I read in the Wiki to make /tmp mounted in RAM. Here is my fstab:

Thank you for the response. I'll go ahead and mark this solved. I just needed a sanity check, and if you think it's fine, then I'm happy.
But if anyone has any other tips/tweaks, feel free to share them, as I'm making a new Clonezilla image on this laptop and wouldn't mind tweaking it a bit.

Looks like an old unanswered question, you need a cheap and simple U-like metal stand, which has the contour of a 3.5 inch HDD, upon which you fix the SSD or any 2.5 ' HDD. This is not absolutely necessary, but you need to fix is somehow there, otherwise you need an adhesive strip or else.

A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM. Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM. RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

SOLID STATE DRIVE, WHICH ONE TO GET? I NEED HELP me please!

So I am looking to get a SOLID STATE DRIVE but not sure which one to buy, I had gotten the intel x25 80gb but its too small and not too much different from my stock hdd. I mean sure its fast but not worth $200 thats for sure. I need a top quality, flying fast and worth the money SSD, SO WHICH ONE DO YOU RECOMMEND? I was going for the c300 from crucial the 128gb to be exact, but I have heard so many bad things.
My current setup is 13" i5 2011 version, with 8gb ram upgrade.
Im running OS X 10.6.7 and Windows 7 boot camp as well.

I've done 6 so far and no problems at all; formatting, installing nothing. Total no brainer. I did have a small formatting problem on my last one but I called them and solved the problem before the guy got on the phone. He immediately offered a return sticker (RMA) but I didn't need it and the MBP is running fine.

How do I get the Recovery partition onto a DVD set from my solid state drive?

My Pavilion dv6 has only a solid state drive. I need to recover and reuse the 23 gb currently partitioned for recovery. To do this I need to move the recovery files off the drive. Can this be done? Where do i find instructions on how to do it?

Hello txi, Your best bet would be to use a hard drive image program and perform a complete hard drive image.
If you have Windows 7 on the SSD this would include the System partition, the C: partition and the D: Recovery partition.
The D: Recovery requires some data from the Master Boot Record (MBR) in order to be accessed.
Just trying to copy the data from the Recovery partition would not be successful if you wanted to use this data later.
By making a hard drive imgae of the entire hard drive, and saving this image on an external hard drive, or a large enough USB drive, you could then delete the D: partition and expand the C: partition to recover the D: partition capacity.
Then if you need to revert back as the system was when the hard drive image was created, the D: partition would be put back on the SSD.

Solid State Drive Upgrade Kit v300a with Windows 8.1 on Envy laptop

I am trying to install the Solid State Drive Upgrade Kit V300a in my new HP Envy with Windows 8.1. This upgrade was listed as an option for this model and was bought with the machine.
The doc lists OS supported, but Windows 8 is not in the list. Is Windows 8 supported?
The included disk labled "Arconis" includes ATIHO user guide pdfs and an HP-Drive-Install-Guide-1.15.13-327pm pdf. The install guide mentions using Arconis. The Arconis user guide says to run "setup" to install Acronis but there is no setup file on the disk. I have chosen the setting to display hidden files and there is nothing on the disk but pdfs. The v300a box claims that it includes Acronis Cloning Software.

Upgrade my Macbook Pro 17" with solid state drive and RAM?

My MBP is a 17" mid-2009, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB.
I am an architecture student. I use 3D modeling programs like SketchUp, Revit, AutoCad, etc. According to these software websites, my MBP is sufficient. However, when I'm running these programs, I get the apple "beach ball" a LOT, along with a lot of lagging even when I'm working on simple models. After doing some research, it appears that upgrading my RAM to 8GB (my model's max capability) and buying a solid state drive would help my MBP run much faster and much cooler.
My questions:
1. What brand and exact product #/link to this (if possible) of RAM (2 x 4GB sticks) and SSD should I purchase?
2. Which SSD GB option should I purchase? I chatted with OWC online and was given this variety of SSDs.

I just want my MBP to run as fast as possible while running my modeling software w/o spending an arm and a leg if possible. But I don't know if it's worth the trouble and expense to upgrade my current MBP, which I love, or just getting a new MBP or Mac desktop. And if I should just get another Mac, I don't know which one I should get.
Another thing I have seen is the Mac Mini. Is it possible to plug this or any other external device to my MBP in order to accomplish my performance goals without having to modify my MBP or buy another Mac?

1. OWC or Crucial are recommended sources for memory. You can usually find a 5% off and free shipping code for Crucial on retailmenot.com. On crucial just key in your system information in their memory selector.
2. Your system likely supports SATA II speeds, so the SSD OWC pointed to would work. I installed one in our 2010 mac mini and it's working well. I originally installed their 6G drive however it ran at SATA I speeds. Turns out the 3G which is specd for SATA II is what was needed and works fine.
3. The OWC package they recommended includes a case to put your existing hard drive in. That helps to be able to transfer your data back to the SSD then you can use it as a backup drive or as an external storage device.

fromx001 I believe you can use a SSD as internal drive, of course make sure to buy an ide/ata. There are all sorts of sizes up to 480 GB also in the ide/ata standard. You should however research carefully your purchase, as the performances of your SSD are going to have to rely on firmware "garbage collection", as the older operating systems haven't been written with SSD in mind.
Mac Man JW: some people depend on Classic as a brody said, other people need a phone modem from time to time, other people use the laptop in harsh environments, and at -15C and below, LCD screens easily crack and break; NOT the powerbook which has hot air towards the screen (and it's a machine that heats quite a lot). My alu Powerbook 12", which was *not* treated with velvet gloves, only once had a cracked screen: a cleaning lady had stepped over it (!!!!) no joke. And in normal / light use today, it is still pretty decent and usable.

Solid State Drive = Gets stuck

I recently bought Intel's 520 Series Solid State Drive. I swapped my hard drive with the SSD, booted on a Snow Leopard disk. Opened Disk Utility, formatted my drive (Mac OS Extended Journaled) and installed Snow Leopard. After I installed the applications I needed, I finally upgraded to OS X Lion. But now I can't browse the net, work on applications or do any other task without getting a beach ball every 2 - 3 minutes. My MacBook Pro gets stuck a lot for some reason. (I never had this issue with my older hard drive)
I have the latest version of OS X Lion, but no firmware update was available for my SSD. I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can be fixed?

What model MBP do you have? Older systems don't handle SSDs as well as newer system. Especially systems that don't do the 6GB SATA interface, which is what the Intel 520 series is. Although they state the drive interface is baclwards compatible that does always mean it will work correctly on older systems that only do SATA 1 transfers, 1.5GB.
You could try a Clean Fresh install of Lion without first installing SL. That may or may not work.
Just boot to the recovery HD partition and erase the Macintosh HD partition then re-download and install Lion.

Hello Jurgen.
Here are some pointers when reinstalling the OS and all your applications. You may use the W7 tools to mirror image your hard drive and create a system repair disc. These two applications work to restore the OS at the time of creation. If the new SSD is smaller in size, this method will not work. You will have to use your HP recovery DVD's in this case or you can install a retail version of W7 and use your product key from the underside of the laptop. For this to work it has to be the exact same version and it has to be installed as a trial. When it's time to enter you OEM key, go to Computer Properties and at the bottom of that page you will find "Change Product Key". Here is where you enter your OEM key.
A safe download for W7.

If you choose this method I can show you exactly where to get all you drivers and even get the hotkeys working. You "eject" Volume OSD Bass and treble etc, will all be gone with retail version of W7.

Solid state drive without trim using time machine

Due to hard drive failure I got a solid state drive. Samsung 850 pro. I read online about trim support and some have it on and some have it off. Once I installed my ssd i used a memory stick to boot with the Yosemite installer on it and i was up and running. I used time machine to transfer the information from my previous built in hard drive.
My question is - how do I know wether trim is on or off. My mac is working perfectly so I'm at a loss. is my computer safe?

Well, it depends what applications - if they are part of the system, it's best to simply use the latest copy included already. As for third party, you have to check if a) they are compatible (you did not say if you are upgrading to a new OS or not), and b) do they have any registration number/key that needs to be entered. If you downloaded them, it'd be better to download them fresh. The difference between drag 'n drop and a clone is that a clone copies your entire system including the little bits and pieces which may be in obscure places, so a drag 'n drop method will work with an app that was installed by simply dragging it into the Applications folder - but, if it employs an installer, you don't know where all the pieces are. So, you can try it, but be prepared for some unexpected behavior.
Make sure you put everything in the same spot it originated from...

Would the G4 be able to operate in Classic mode with the SSD?
Would the G4 be able to boot into OS 9 with the SSD?
Should the SSD be used only for booting and applications, with user data stored on another drive that does not use SSD technology (such as an ATA or SATA drive)?
Should only 50% of the drive space be used, in order to ensure optimized performance?
Would the G4 only be able to use the first 128 MB of drive space of an SSD that has a capacity greater than 128 MB? If so, would either of the below cards enable the G4 to read the entire drive?

Depends on the controller card, but with the linked card, it shouldn't be an issue.

Smaller capacity drives will limit file storage, and keeping OS and applications separate always improves performance, regardless of the drive type.

SSD's can be filled further, but should maintain 20GB or more for virtual memory.

Those controllers will work for and allow use of large capacity ATA drives.

Solid State Drive for Macbook Pro?

Just wondering how many people have experience with 3rd-party (not Apple installed) SSD's in Macbook Pros? I was looking at picking up one of the refurbished 13" Macbook Pro's (2.4ghz c2d + 4gb ram) and then add in a Solid State Drive. I'm considering getting a 240GB SATA2 SSD (OCZ), which is about $400. Just wondering if anyone has some hints, tips, or articles online that they'd refer to regarding this... and the benefits of doing this specific to Mac OS X.
