[SOLVED]netctl-auto no longer working

Can some kind person point me in the right direction to fix this? Seems to have stopped working after latest upgrade.  Manually netctl start works OK.  Haven't been able to find the solution in man pages or googling.

  • [SOLVED] netctl-auto not working, and I cannot remove netctl instance

    Hi, I installed Arch a few days ago, netctl-auto was working yesterday but today it's not.
    Note that
    netctl start
    works: I have a problem with netctl-auto only.
    $ ping -c 3 8.8.8.8
    connect: Network in unreachable
    I have created only one netctl profile so far, it's called wlp4s0-VM581389-2G (wlp4s0 is the name of my wireless interface)
    $ ls /etc/netctl
    examples hooks interfaces wlp4s0-VM581389-2G
    $ netctl list
    wlp4s0-VM581389-2G
    wpa_actiond is installed, and I have done
    systemctl enable [email protected]
    But for some reason I have some extra netctl@ instances that shouldn't be there. I am wondering if they could be the cause of netctl-auto not working properly:
    $ systemctl | grep netctl
    [email protected] loaded active running Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles
    ● netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service loaded failed failed Networking for netctl profile my-network
    ● netctl@wlp4s0\x2dVM581389\x2d2G.service loaded failed failed Networking for netctl profile wlp4s0-VM581389-2G
    system-netctl.slice loaded active active system-netctl.slice
    system-netctl\x2dauto.slice loaded active active system-netctl\x2dauto.slice
    - What are these bullet points at the beginning of these two lines?
    - Where do netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service and netctl@wlp4s0\x2dVM581389\x2d2G.service come from? They might be instances that I had enabled in the past.
    These instances are not enabled and they are inactive, but they are loaded!
    $ systemctl is-enabled netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service
    Failed to get unit file state for [email protected]: No such file or directory
    $ systemctl status netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service

    Active: inactive (dead)
    Docs: man:netctl.profile(5)
    I have tried to get rid of them, but not managed:
    $ systemctl stop netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service
    $ systemctl disable netctl@my\x2dnetwork.service
    $ systemctl | grep netctl
    [email protected] loaded active running Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles

    system-netctl.slice loaded active active system-netctl.slice
    system-netctl\x2dauto.slice loaded active active system-netctl\x2dauto.slice
    Also, I have tried to check with
    netctl-auto list
    , which gives an empty output. I am guessing that it's normal, because the netctl-auto instances are managed by systemd?
    Now, trying to understand what is happening to [email protected]: as seen before with systemctl | grep netctl, it is active and running.
    Then I do:
    $ journalctl -u [email protected]
    -- Reboot --
    Feb 10 17:34:23netctl-auto[270]: Included profile: 'wlp4s0-VM581389-2G'
    wpa_actiond[310]: Starting wpa_actiond session for interface 'wlp4s0'
    So, a wpa_actiond session was started, but I still cannot ping 8.8.8.8. Why?
    Investigating further:
    $ netctl status wlp4s0-VM581389-2G
    ● netctl@wlp4s0\x2dVM581389\x2d2G.service - Networking for netctl profile wlp4s0-VM581389-2G

    "You may have another wpa_supplicant process already running or the file was left by an unclean termination of wpa_supplicant in which case you will need to manually remove this file before starting wpa_supplicant again."
    What does this mean? Which file might have been left by an unclean termination? I tried to find this info in the wpa_supplicant documentation, and by searching on Google, but couldn't find anything.
    Now I am lost:
    - how do I get rid of these two undesired netctl instances?
    - where can I investigate next, to get netctl-auto@wlp4s0 to work?
    Any help greatly appreciated :-)

    What is the output of:
    ls -l /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants
    netctl-auto cannot be used with explicitly enabled profiles (ie, those for which you have used `netctl enable <profile>`).

  • [SOLVED] USB 3G no longer works after upgrade to GNOME 3.8

    I did the 'big' update today, including upgrading to GNOME 3.8. Unfortunately, NetworkManager no longer picks up my 3G USB modem (which used to work fine before the update). Any pointers as to how I could debug this would be greatly appreciated.
    wvdial has never really worked for me, but gnome networkmanager used to pick up my device and the connection, and now simply acts as if it's no longer present. Attempting to follow the instructions on the wiki to re-setup my USB stick (the instructions I followed in the first place) no longer works. Did today's update cause the same problem for anybody else?
    **Update: After updating today to modemmanager 0.7.990-4 and running
    sudo systemctl enable ModemManager
    sudo systemctl start ModemManager
    I have full connectivity again with the built-in DW5550 mobile broadband card in my Dell Precision M6600 (including showing signal strength in the GNOME 3.8 top bar, etc). Thanks all for the help, and (most importantly) to whoever fixed up modemmanager!

    wvdial might also be a workaround, if one does not like to downgrade. In my case, I had to unset my PIN on the SIM card first. One can do that using a mobile phone, for example.
    Then
    # pacman -S wvdial
    in /etc/wvdial.conf, I put
    [Dialer Defaults]
    Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    ISDN = 0
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Dial Attempts = 3
    Init1 = ATZ
    [Dialer huawei]
    Modem = /dev/serial/by-id/usb-ZTE_Incorporated_1_1_Surf-stick_MF19001MOD010000-if02-port0
    Baud = 115200
    [Dialer voda]
    Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.vodafone.de"
    [Dialer dial]
    Phone=*99**1#
    Username = umts
    Password = umts
    You can find out your modem name by looking it up with
    ls /dev/serial/by-id/
    In my case there were names containing the strings if00, if01 and if02, and if02 turned out to be the correct one. This depends on hardware.
    Also, in the "Init 3" line, you may have to replace "web.vodafone.de" according to your provider. The section "dial" seems to be quite universal from what I read on the web, so you may not have to change that.
    then
    # wvdial huawei voda dial
    and hope for the best.
    Disclaimer: I do not have a comprehensive understanding of what I did here, but it worked in my case and it might work for you, too.
    I noticed that the Defaults section makes a difference, because the one I just edited in above avoids some delay in dialing.

    Edit: I tried switching to bash in a tty and then just startx but that doesn't help either.
    Edit2: To be clear openbox does load a desktop. The autostart scripts at ~/.config/openbox/ just don't run. Thanks.
    Edit3: I decided to run the command issued in openbox-session and added --debug to it. Here is the output of "xinit /usr/bin/openbox --debug --startup "/usr/lib/openbox/openbox-autostart OPENBOX" "$@" -- :1 -nolisten tcp" :

    Edit8: Kupfer still loads even though nothing else does. So I uninstalled kupfer. Same thing though. No autostart.
    Edit9: Tried booting into repo kernel instead of ck kernel. Didn't work.

    WonderWoofy wrote:Interestingly, of all those things you included in your post, you forgot to include the autostart script itself.  What does that look like?
    Well, since it worked fine even when called indirectly through openbox-autostart and since it's worked fine for months I figured it was fine. I am happy to post it though. Here you go:
    feh --bg-scale /home/dodo3773/Pictures/blacksolid.png &

    ~/Documents/Scripts/conky.sh &
    sudo /home/dodo3773/Documents/Scripts/temp_throttlenew > /dev/null 2>&1 &
    Here are the external scripts that are called (startupopen.sh and temp_throttlenew):
    startupopen.sh
    #! /bin/bash
    sleep 13

    Stuff that needs sudo is in my sudoers as "username hostname NOPASSWD: item1,item2,etc,etc". Nothing too exciting. Seems like if there was suddenly something wrong with my autostart file at least some of the stuff would run either way though cause of "&". Pretty puzzling this issue is.

  • [SOLVED] VAIO brightness no longer working after upgrade

    Hi I used to set brightness on my VAIO VPCCAS1E, via...
    xfce4 -> fn keys
    i3 -> "echo 5 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
    none of them are working after having upgraded the system yesterday. I have checked the news and done my -Syu accordingly.

    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 1. To make Plymouth work:
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 1.1. Add "plymouth" to HOOKS after "base" and "udev" in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 1.2. Add 'quiet splash' to the grub command line
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 1.3. Rebuild your initrd image (# mkinitcpio -p [kernel preset name]).
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] E.g.: sudo mkinitcpio -p linux
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 2. To enable encryption, replace "encrypt" with "plymouth-encrypt" in
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild your initrd image.
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET]
    [2013-06-05 10:34] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] 3. You will also need to rebuild your initrd image every time you change your theme

  • [solved] openvpn connection no longer working, tls error

    Hey!
    I have a strange problem. The same setup was working for months, nothing changed. Perhaps it`s due to an update and you guys can help me. I can`t establish a vpn connection to our openvpn server any more.
    I`m using tunnelblick as vpn client to connect from my mac to the office. It hangs at "waiting for response from server". I`m not an expert, but as I understand the tls handshake fails. I googled around and tried everything suggested, but no success.
    I haven`t used it since the latest openvpn package update, perhaps it has something to do with that?
    I found this, too, but it didn`t help either:
    http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-sourc … ivity.html
    This is the client log:

    I solved it
    I did more reading and it seemed to be a problem in the config files, anything else could be pretty much excluded.
    I started with fresh config files referring to the german wiki (it`s different) from .org. Since it was working with this I started to track the problem down. In the end I had to delete the
    multihome
    option in the server config. Everything seems fine now! Thanks for everyone that read it. Perhaps it helps someone in the future.

  • [SOLVED] udev rule no longer working

    I have a udev rule set up to automatically mount an ext4 filesystem when I plug a certain thumb drive in.  It was working fine until yesterday (probably due to updates).  Here is the rule, in file /etc/udev/rules.d/99-gfk.rules:
    KERNEL=="sd?2", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0930", ATTRS{idProduct}=="6545", ATTRS{serial}=="1C6F654E4041ED601910053F", SYMLINK+="gfshare"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd?2", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0930", ATTRS{idProduct}=="6545", ATTRS{serial}=="1C6F654E4041ED601910053F", RUN+="/bin/mkdir /media/gfshare"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd?2", SUBSYSTEM=="block", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0930", ATTRS{idProduct}=="6545", ATTRS{serial}=="1C6F654E4041ED601910053F", RUN+="/bin/mount -t ext4 -o ro,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime /dev/gfshare /media/gfshare"
    The symlink and the mkdir command are both working fine, but the mount command is not being run for some reason.  If I manually run the mount command it works fine.  Some possibly helpful output:
    # pacman -Qo $(which udevadm)
    /usr/bin/udevadm is owned by systemd 212-1
    # dmesg |tail -16

    I see.  That is somewhat aggravating but I will find another way to achieve what I wanted I suppose.
    Thank you.  Should I mark this is solved or unsolvable or something?  Sorry, I'm new to posting on these forums.
    Edit:  I was able to achieve what I wanted with udevil as recommended by the wiki.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless auto-connect not working

    Hi!
    I'm really new to Linux in general, so I've spent a few hours trying to figure this out (searching the forums, etc) but haven't had any success.
    When I first installed Arch, everything seemed to work fine. It would automatically connect to my home wireless (after enabling net-auto-wireless in sytemctl). I went to a local library, and connected to their wifi. After rebooting at the library I noticed that it didn't connect automatically to the library network. I wasn't sure if I had done something wrong or if I had just failed to set something up... but then it also would not automatically connect at home now.
    I have to use wifi-menu every time I reboot. I ran systemctl and saw this:
    systemctl failed list:
    UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
    net-auto-wireless.service loaded failed failed Provides automatic netcfg wireless connection
    netcfg.service loaded failed failed Netcfg multi-profile daemon
    LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
    ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
    SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
    2 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
    To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
    netcfg status:

    Any idea what I might have done or what's happening? I hate feeling helpless, but I'm not sure what to look into to resolve my problem.
    Thanks!

    bohoomil wrote:Seems like your config file(s) is corrupted somehow... Assuming you have a default netcfg profile to be loaded at system startup, what happens if you try and load it manually? Do you get similar error messages?
    Everything should be pretty standard. All I've done is follow instructions in the (complete) beginners guide.
    I haven't added any default profiles... so I'm not sure about my default profile. There's a "wlan0-" entry in addition to the library network and home network profiles... but it's empty.
    When I use
    netcfg wlan0-
    it says WPA Authentication/Association failed... but it's an empty profile so I wouldn't expect it to do anything.
    My local network is BELL369. When I used
    netcfg wlan0-BELL369
    it gave no errors and my wireless worked fine.
    If the configuration files are corrupted, how would I replace them?
    This is the contents of my netcfg conf file:
    # Enable these netcfg profiles at boot time.
    # - prefix an entry with a '@' to background its startup
    # - set to 'last' to restore the profiles running at the last shutdown
    # - set to 'menu' to present a menu (requires the dialog package)
    # Network profiles are found in /etc/network.d
    NETWORKS=(last)
    # Specify the name of your wired interface for net-auto-wired
    WIRED_INTERFACE="eth0"

  • [SOLVED] pure-ftpd no longer works after system update

    Hi,
    I made a system update today and since pure-ftpd doesn't want to start it just display "[FAIL]" but I don't have any error message.
    Is it possible to see the the error log of pure-ftpd ?
    Do you have any idea of how getting it working again?
    Thanks

    I tried to check the version of pure-ftpd: pure-ftpd -V and it replies:
    pure-ftpd: error while loading shared libraries: libmysqlclient.so.16: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    but mysql client is installed properly! I tried to reinstall it but it changed nothing

  • [SOLVED] Suspend button no longer works after update

    Recently update my system, and now pressing the suspend button (Fn+F3 in my case) doesn't suspend it to ram as it did before.
    Running acpi_listen and hitting the button gives me the output "button/sleep SBTN 00000080 00000000 K" so clearly it's hearing it. Pressing the brightness buttons on the keyboard works (changes the brightness as expected), pressing the power button works to shut it down completely, closing the lid suspends it as expected... Just the suspend button stopped working.
    I saw a post about a different thing which mentioned systemd's config file "/etc/systemd/logind.conf" so I tried uncommenting the line in that file which tells systemd to handle the suspend button, but no luck, not even after rebooting to hopefully get it to source that file.
    Here is my ACPI folder's tree...
    ./events
    ./events/anything
    ./events/lm_battery
    ./events/lm_lid
    ./events/lm_ac_adapter
    ./handler.sh
    ./actions
    ./actions/lm_battery.sh
    ./actions/lm_lid.sh
    ./actions/lm_ac_adapter.sh
    It has everything it should have, i think. The handler script has a "case" for suspend button.
    Running "sudo pm-suspend" in a terminal suspends it, as does going into the XFCE shutdown menu and hitting suspend.
    I can't think of anything else to try. Also, I did look around for other posts, but wasn't able to find anything. If I missed something, I appologize for the double post.
    Thanks,
    --Scott
    EDIT: I swear I meant to put this in "laptop issues." This is embarrassing.

    Sorry for not responding more punctually. handler.sh is as follows (the only modifications to it would have been things done by the system itself, as i haven't touched it)

    The line that i uncommented (to no effect) was "HandleSuspendKey=suspend".
    I sort of have a workaround, inasmuch as I use XFCE and XFCE can handle the suspend key just fine, but the catch is that I have to have the DM up in order for it to do so, so it's not really a "solution" per se. Anyway. I don't know what else to try. The only other thing I could think of was to look in to laptop mode utils to see if others had had problems with it, but googling around yeilded nothing pertinent to this particular issue.

  • [SOLVED] vi (vim) no longer works properly after updating the system

    After updating the system with pacman -Syu vi stopped working. All syntax colors are gone, and everything is grey. When I press i to enter "insert" mode, editing is not visible. Changes are obscure and you can't tell what you are modifying.  Quitting with :q will still prompt you to use :q! to abort changes, even if no changes were visibly made.
    When scrolling to the beginning or end of a file, the screen flashes with grey glitch like areas.  What happened to my vi!?!?!?!?!?
    This all happened while following the beginner's guide to install arch linux.  I realized this when trying to arbitrarily read a test file I made directly after updating.
    The problems continued to be visible when installing and setting up sudo (those steps are the next steps that require vi)...  I think the sudo installation worked... but my vi is horribly glitchy
    Any ideas?

    Setting EDITOR does not help in every case. For instance, visudo is by default hard linked to vi. (You can change this, I know. )
    But in fact, vi is only a symlink to ex. So I simply renamed this link and put another symlink to vim (vim-big in my case since I in fact do use the gvim package).
    /usr/bin/vi -> vim-big
    /usr/bin/vi-simple -> ex
    The drawback is that I have to set those links on every vi-update. (But I sure will remember...)

  • [solved] yaourt+customizepkg no longer work

    I set up customizepkg to patch a few packages before building them from source (see the original thread where I asked how to do it)
    It worked great initially, but yesterday I started seeing this error when trying to sync:
    $ yaourt -S gnome-applets
    ==> Building gnome-applets from sources
    gnome-applets was not found on abs repos.archlinux.org
    Any idea what's wrong? I swear it worked before I don't think I changed anything that could potentially affect yaourt or customizepkg
    The files in /etc/customizepkg.d/ are fine, I can successfully do this:
    ~$ mkdir test; cd test
    ~/test$ cp /var/abs/extra/gnome-applets/* .
    ~/test$ customizepkg -m
    ~/test$ makepkg
    ~/test$ sudo pacman -U gnome-applets-2.26.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] broadcom-wl no longer works?

    Well I recently reformatted my laptop and have been stuck using ethernet ): Previous to the kernel update & reformat I was using the broadcom-wl driver from the AUR to interface with my BCM4328; however, now when I install it everything installs fine but I don't have a new interface... any ideas?
    Edit: Works fine, I lied. Be sure the ssb module isn't running when you try to install the package or else it won't create the new interface.

    There was just another kernel update and now it works again, yay.

    I think another version of netctl has been pushed to the repos.  Maybe you should try updating again and see if your issues are resolved by the updated package.
    pacman -Qi netctl
