[solved]network connection down after -Syu

Couple of days ago, I used "pacman -Syu" to upgrade, since then when I start arch I can't connect to internet, not via wireless nor wired. Upgrade included few packages which I can't remember and I don't know a way to learn. Only one I recognized was Chromium, which I believe, shouldn't affect anything at all. Any help please?

Stupid of me that I didn't try kde network plasma (I wasn't using before). Anyway, network connection was somehow not enabled, so I enabled and the problem is solved.

  • [SOLVED] Network connection issues - need to make connections twice

I've a strange issue with my network connection that has recently started to appear where if I:
    - Attempt to install a package with pacman.
    - Visit a webpage in chromium.
    - FTP a file using Thunar.
    - SSH into a server.
Then I quite often have to attempt the connection twice i.e:
    - Pacman will return "error: failed retrieving file" on a first attempt, but be fine on the second.
    - Chromium (or any other browser) will partially load pages or will show a 'Server Not Found' message on the first attempt but be OK after a refresh.
    - FTP will not resolve the server on the first attempt but will on the second.
    - ssh will return  "Could not resolve hostname Name or service not known" on the first attempt then be fine on the second.
This issue just used to occur with pacman & ssh and I just put it down to 'one of those things I needed to fix when I had time'. Yet the issue has recently started occuring with chromium as well so is making browsing the web a real pain.
I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to track down the issue so would appreciate any tips!
I'm using netctl to connect over wifi & just as I tried to post this message an error appeared in Chromium which may give me some hints as to how to fix this:
The server at bbs.archlinux.org can't be found because the DNS look-up failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Chromium from accessing the network.
I'm using netcl to connect over wifi.
I also recently installed dhcpd which I occasionally start and stop though the issue with pacman & ssh was occurring before this.
    Thanks
    Tom

Thanks for that Strike0. It prompted a thorough reading of a number of man pages, though while I 'think' I understand the general concept of how things should be working, I'm finding the configuration confusing!!
I created and added some nameserver settings to the following config file '/etc/resolv.conf.head'  (googles 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 also work):
    $ vim /etc/resolv.conf.head
    # OpenDNS servers
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
Then I reload  /etc/resolv.conf and view its new content:
    $ resolvconf -u;cat /etc/resolv.conf
    # Generated by resolvconf
    # OpenDNS servers
    nameserver 208.67.222.222
    nameserver 208.67.220.220
    domain home
    nameserver 192.168.1.254
And this seems to make everything work, where network connection are being reached after the first attempt!!
Though I'm confused why 192.168.1.254 is being used? Am I right in understanding that 192.168.1.254 is a broadcast address so all network devices on 192.168.1.* are being queried for a DNS server? If I use the host command on 192.168.1.254 it seems to fail.  Does this fail mean that my home router is not working correctly or theres' an internal config issue?
    $ host www.archlinux.org 192.168.1.254
    Using domain server:
    Name: 192.168.1.254
    Address: 192.168.1.254#53
    Aliases:
www.archlinux.org is an alias for gudrun.archlinux.org.
    gudrun.archlinux.org has address 66.211.214.131
    Host gudrun.archlinux.org.home not found: 2(SERVFAIL)
What does the "Host gudrun.archlinux.org.home not found: 2(SERVFAIL)" output mean? Where is it getting the .home name from?
    As comparison
    $ host www.archlinux.org 8.8.4.4
    Using domain server:
    Name: 8.8.4.4
    Address: 8.8.4.4#53
    Aliases:
www.archlinux.org is an alias for gudrun.archlinux.org.
    gudrun.archlinux.org has address 66.211.214.131
In one of the man pages I saw that you can test an internal DNS with:
    $ host www.archlinux.org 127.0.0.1
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
Though wouldn't a dhcpd4.service need to be running for that to work?
Lots of questions I know, but I would like to understand exactly what's happening so I can easily trouble shoot in the future.

  • IPhone  network connections slowed after upgrading to IOS 5.1!!

My iPhone network connections (WiFi/4G) are extermely slow after performing the update to IOS 5.1! Speedtest.Net results over 4G = 0.15 Mpbs down and 0.05 Mpbs up ans that's will FULL bars! AT&T claims that there are no network issues in my area and they are not throttling my device. Even over WiFi it's taking FOREVER to download apps from the app store, etc... What is going on????

My WiFi connection works fine, but 4G from ATT gives in 0.15 mpbs download. I called up ATT several times, but they have no resolution to this problem. Everytime they ask me to reset my network connection. This is a big deal for me as I am most of the time on Cellular Data and I need to use iPhone for my work. I am thinking to roll back to iOS 5.0.1. What in this world could turn a 3G phone into a 4G phone just by a software upgrade? I just feel like I am down to a 1G phone. Apple please fix this asap and release a patch, else I may not be able to use this phone.

  • Keep losing network connection, especially after waking from sleep, but...

For a while now, my G5 would have intermittent problems not finding the network after it has been asleep for a bit. I used to resolve this by resetting the router, or sometimes putting the Mac back to sleep and resetting the router.
Lately, I discovered another fix: wake up my MacBook. The MacBook wakes up, connects wirelessly, and sees the network, and shortly thereafter, the G5 sees it too.
I cannot interpret this. Why would it be that the G5 would fail to see the router until after the MacBook is awake (and sees the router)? I never could figure out which component was at fault before, and this further confuses me. I mean, it seems that it has to be the G5, since if another computer can see the net on the same network, it would rule out the router and the cable modem. Right?
So what do I do about the G5, then? Yesterday, it was getting to the point where every time I woke up the G5, it wouldn't find the network (until after I woke up the MacBook).

    Hi, Brent:
I would not be too quick to start swapping things out (esp. expensive things!) without letting the discussion flow. I have never seen an answer that worked except updates and not all do... see below.
My Dual 2.5GHz G5 has been doing this on and off for years. It has been networked wirelessly since I got it and I am on my third router now for other reasons. I run two other Macs (G4 mini and early IMac/Intel) as well as two laptop PCs, all wireless. None of the other machines ever has this intermittent connectivity issue - just the G5. The symptom is a stalled browser (Safari or FireFox) with the wireless symbol almost always at four bars. Once in a while (like today), the bars will fade down to two for a while, but rarely. Absolutely the only temporary fix I have found successful is to switch airport on and off. Cure may hold for a while or it may not. Have noticed some apps using airport still seem to work (an old MacStumbler utility) even when Safari locks up. Thought it might be a Safari bug, but FireFox does the same thing.
IMHO, this is fundamentally related to a G5 software issue or interaction with the airport or network card. As I noted above, code evolution is a strong factor in my experience. My problems come and go tightly linked to software updates. It is usually a night-and-day change. I am at 10.4.11 on all Macs here; problem had not been around until I ran the last big update to 4.11. Interestingly, my daughter owns a very new iMac with Leopard and has seen the same type of behavior since Day One. I have also seen this problem mentioned about Leopard and iMacs in the lay press.
Wish I could offer a solution, but I am just waiting it out again.

  • [solved] Network stopped working after update

    Hi,
I have been working on this problem for some time now with no success. I searched the forums and found threads like this, which did not seem to work for me. I hope it is (as always) just a stupid mistake I made.
After a bigger update (not using the machine for half a year) I cannot get my network back to work. I am talking about wired network, though wireless network has a similar problem. I verified the hardware via a Windows dualboot.
I think this problem is DHCP related:
    # dhcpcd enp2s0
    dhcpcd[563]: version 6.0.5 starting
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: carrier acquired
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: carrier lost
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: carrier acquired
    dhcpcd[563]: enp2s0: soliciting a DHCP lease
    dhcpcd[563]: timed out
    dhcpcd[563]: exited
I usually run NetworkManager and dhcpcd, but also tried wicd and dhclient which did not help either.
I have no idea which outputs can be helpful in this matter, so I will provide them on demand. Thanks in advance.

I just want to add that connecting with a static IP works flawlessly. I am trying to connect to a Fritz Box 7270, if that helps. I have the same problem on another machine. The problem occured with the update from dhcpcd 5.6.4-2 to 6.0.5-1, I guess, but I cannot be absolutely sure.
I already tried commenting out the "require dhcp server_identifier" option of dhcpcd, which did noch change anything. I am really lost here, so any hint would help.

  • Wireless network connectivity issues after upgrading to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.4) I find that my wireless network will not automatically connect to my router (Netgear DG834G) as it used to. First impressions are that the macbook is finding a number of wireless networks but wants to connect to the one that is alphabetically first in the list. It also seems that the signal that the airport is receiving is weak, even when the macbook is next to the router.
Has anyone experienced this when they upgraded?
Any and all help gratefully appreciated
    Nick

but a couple that I used with no problem before I upgraded now give me a "server not found" error after I enter my login and password.
Quit Safari. Open Keychain Access   /Applications/Utilities. Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the keychains for the sites you have problems logging into AND the Safari Forms Autofill keychain. Now from the menu bar click Keychain Access / Keychain First Aid. Select: Verify. If necessary, select: Repair. You will be prompted for your admin password. Click Start.
Relaunch Safari. Navigate to a site. Login with your user name and password. That will create a new keychain for you.
If you still have problems accessing sites, go to Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all cookies or just the one's for the problematic sites. Now try logging into a site again.
Even though you upgraded to v10.6.7 make sure Safari is up to date. From the menu bar click Safari / About Safari. If it's a version prior to 5.0.5, click your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then click: Software Update...
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Something there may be preventing you from accessing secure sites. If you have any extensions installed,  turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Network connection lost after waking from sleep

    iMac (27" late 2013) running Yosemite 10.10.
Ethernet connection direct to the computer from the FIOS router.
Upon waking from sleep, the computer is not connected to the internet.
After about 20 seconds it finally reconnects.
Under Mavericks it never lost the connection by sleeping - was instantly connected upon wake up.
I tried creating a new location under the network system preferences and ordered it so that Ethernet was the first to connect.
    That didn't change anything.
Any suggestions how to fix this?  I don't want to have to wait every time I wake up the computer.
    Really bugging me.

    Update on my situation.
I have tried many things to get this fixed including:
SMC reset (for an iMac this means unplugging it, waiting, and plugging back in)
    PRAM reset
    deleted the "system configuration" folder
Still no luck.  Upon freshly booting the machine, it gets to the desktop and opens up mail for me, but the internet is not connected right away.  Still takes an additional 15seconds or so after Mail boots up to get a connection.  Then everything works fine.  If the computer sleeps, it doesn't have internet upon waking, but again will establish a connection (self assign an IP address) after about 15-20 seconds.
So while not crippling, these 15-20 second waits are very annoying.
Interestingly, this is ONLY with a wired Ethernet connection.  If I use WiFi everything connects right away.  But my WiFi is slower than the wired connection and I prefer to use the wired connection.
    Any further suggestions are welcome.
    Chris

  • [solved] ssh went down after recent binary update

well i just did a binary update and ran into some problems apparently not knowing what i was doing, see last couple posts here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1300263.  So now i am trying to reinstall some of my apps, but when i go to ssh into it i get connection activily refused.  so i go to the console, and run
    # systemctl restart sshd
no output message.  then i ran systemctl stop sshd, start sshd, etc... no output messages.   then  i get
    # ps aux | grep sshd
    root 202 0.0 0.0 39736 2684 ? Ss 09:20 0:00 /usr/bin/sshd -D
then i run nmap on port 22 localhost and get port 22/tcp state closed, host is up.
Note, pasting my conf file will be impossible without ssh.  catch 22.  I didnt make any edits to that ssh conf file in more than 6 months, all has been fine until the binary update.  Should i be looking at that as the cause or is there something deeper going on here?
    Edit;
    # journalctl -u sshd
    Starting OpenSSH Daemon
    Started OpenSSH Daemon
Server listening on :: port 22.
Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22
doesnt look very secure but apart from that looks fine to me atleast.

  • T42 network connection problem after installing XP SP3

We have had problems with wireless connection after installing Windows XP SP3 on our T42 laptops.
To cut a long story short the solution was actually related to the driver for the wired ethernet card. With version 8.7.9.0 of the driver an ipconfig gave an error saying there was a hardware problem and new wireless connections could not be made without a wired connection being made first.
The solution was rolling back to driver version 7.2.17.101 at which point all the problems were resolved.
My question is what would be the pitfalls of rolling back to an older driver from 2004. In other words what is in the newer drivers that makes them 'better'. Will I now encounter a new set of problems?
Many thanks in advance for your support.

    Anthony, welcome to the forum,

  • [SOLVED]Xfce4 slowed down after backup

I have Xfce4 and something went wrong with it after making backup on the external drive. It is very slow now, it takes 15 seconds to open something i clicked, the mouse pointer is OK, also the clock. How to fix this? If i damaged system files, how to restore them ?
UPDATE - Fixed - deleted the whole .config folder from /home, the setting that caused trouble is Appearance > Settings > Enable event sounds. I keep it unchecked now...

  • Playing footage over network - slow down after a while

Hi everybody, I have ProRes422 footage I work with stored on network. We bought a 12TB NAS and I found, that when I play the edited movie from timeline, it freezes after a while (2-5 minutes) - it seems to me there is some kind of network overload so that the data cannot be transferred fast enough to continue playback. I thought it is problem of the NAS, but I tried to read the footage from external HDD over network and the problem is the same. Would any of you have an idea how to fix this?
    Thanks

For users like you who insist on ignoring the warnings and still want to buy cheap, I offer this alternative:
Buy Local Attached Storage, RAID 5, for each work station, a gigabit Ethernet switch, and CAT6 Ethernet cabling.
These days, you can buy 8TB of RAID 5 storage, including the RAID card, for less than $4,000US. The Ethernet6 switch is about $50US and the cabling is cheap.
Buy twice the storage as you think you need, then make file copies via the gigabit Ethernet network of all files on the storage on each computer onto the storage on the other computer. Now, you are maintaining a continuous back up of all data, which is a bonus benefit.
The real benefit, though, is speed. Modern RAID 5 storage systems achieve throughput in excess of 600 MB/sec, far more than 23 MB/sec.
Your investment in new equipment will be far less than buying a SAN.

  • No network connection detected after upgrade to 7.7

    Hi,
We recently tried to upgrade itunes to 7.7 - since we did this we have been unable to connect to the store "no network detected". Was advised to upgrade XP to SP2 but link took me to SP3 which I then installed. Have tried uninstalling QT and itunes and reinstalling since upgrading to XPSP3 and clearing the DNS cache but still no joy. Everything else works fine - just the connection to the store which is failing. Can someone please help?

    hi,
i have the exact same problem and since u suggested to copy paste this here i did
hope you can help me out
