[SOLVED] Networking question.

OK so I've got arch up and running (with a GUI even), however, there seems to be a small problem with connecting to the internet.
I've checked the wiki, and basically it says to add eth0 to interface in the rc.conf file, and leave others blank, and I've done that, but every time after I boot I have to type dhcpcd eth0 in terminal to get it to connect to the internet.
I've even get a netcfg profile (I just copied ethernet-dhcp and renamed) and that's linked in the rc.conf aswell (replaced 'main' with 'ethernet' under networking).
Anyone got any ideas?

NETWORKS=(ethernet)
Not used all that often Are you sure you need that?  It overrides (according to man rc.conf) the other network configurations in /etc/rc.d
Do you have the netcfg package installed?  It is required for the NETWORKS keyword.
Do you have a /etc/network.d directory?
I'll wager you would be better off just commenting that line out and rebooting.
Yup, got netcfg the 'ethernet' you see there is the name of my netcfg profile. And yes /etc/network.d was present.
As said by someone above, I have installed networkmanager, removed network from the daemons, and added networkmanager. (dbus was already added previously) I rebooted and it works. There may be a more elegant solution, maybe I did sonething wrong with regards to netcfg, as I just copied and paster the profile from /examples to /network.d I didn't do anything from WITHIN netcfg itself... possibly that's the fault.
Buuuut networkmanager works flawlessly at the moment so I'm happy.

  • Networking Question

I have a T400 with Vista Business that has a couple of networking issues.
First, I have a lot of trouble of dropping connections using wireless, probably related to other threads here about the Intel 5300 AGN adaptor. This does not happen when wired.
More annoying is a problem I have when either wired or wireless where "Network discovery and file sharing" is always turned off, every time I want to access the network. I turn it on and then "make this network a private network" and I can see other devices on the network, HOWEVER they still can't discover my T400. I have several other "Vista" PC's running on the network without this issue.
I realize this might be more of a Vista issue than a T400 hardware issue, but thought I would throw it out here since the wireless dropouts do appear to be hardware or T400 driver related and I suppose the network discovery issue might be related too, I just don't know.

You need to change the power saving settings in the properties of your WLAN card, not to save power, and also disallow windows from turning the card off in order to save power.
There is a setting in Access Connections which can influence file
and printer sharing. If you look at the profile's further settings,
there is an entry for network security, file and printer sharing needs
    to be activated.
I think this is a great feature of AC as it
will override the windows settings, you can choose to allow or block in
each profile; e.g. allowed at home, but blocked at the Airport or Hotel.
    Hope this helps

  • Hey Everyone...  I have a networking Question...

Ok well its more then just one networking question...
I'm working on a game engine (2d) and for the time being it just has two blocks in a 600 by 480 area, both controled by user input on a single comp. I would like to change this so that i can have the blocks be controled by sepeart computers. I know this is possible I just dont know how, any help would be great.
My experience with Java is some what limited i've only been programing for the past 6 months and i've never messed with any network code before.
Any and all help would be great
    Thanks
    Mike

Boy, that other poster was really helpful, yes? :-P
What you probably want to do is open a "socket" between one computer and the other. (TCP is probably the easiest/best for your application, as opposed to UDP). This is actually pretty simple, and basically consists of:
(this client/server arrangement is the easiest. Peer-to-peer would work too, but is generally more complex.)
    1. Computer A decides to become the server and opens a java.net.ServerSocket on port 1234.
    2. Computer B opens a java.net.Socket to computer A's port 1234.
    3. Computer A accepts the connection and gets a java.net.Socket from the ServerSocket.
    4. Now anything computer A writes to the Socket is recieved by computer B, and vice-versa. This is a TCP connection and is stream-based, so it should be familiar if you've done any Java I/O before; in face, you can use java.io.Reader's and Writers, and so on with your Socket.
See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/sockets/ for a good introduction to sockets.

  • Share files in ibook - networking question

Hello, I have a networking question.
I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

    Try repairing disk permissions.
*"The external HD has two partitions, one is a backup of the ibook, and the other has mixed media. When I access my ibook over the network, Only the backup partition appears, and not the mixed media partition. "* Try repairing permissions but not sure if that's going to work. Can't hurt to try.
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

  • EA6900 setup on my home network question

    Hello,
So I have a home network which has been working fine for several years and I had an older Linksys wifi router but with a new TV I needed the "n" protocal for streaming videos to a wireless connection to the TV.
SO, I installed the new EA6900 and got everyone connected and the TV is connected to it also.......VERY easy setup!! Thanks!
    Now the hard part.
I want to have the wireless connection from the TV "see" and grab video from / through my Seagate Central.
What I cannot do is get the EA6900 to "See" the Seagate Central drive even though I have the network ip address for it.
The Seagate is NOT hard wired to the EA6900. The reason being is that the Seagate is in a remote media cabinet and I only have a single cat5 cable coming to the EA6900 location AND the EA6900 CANNOT be located where the Seagate central is. (no signal would get to house.) AND the Seagate central cannot be at the EA6900 location.
My network is setup as follows.
    Cable modem > Router > Seagate Central & EA6900
Ask me any questions but be aware I know enough to be dangerous but follow instructions exactly.
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas all !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Found answer.
I needed to place the EA6900 in bridge mode. Now I can see the seagate just fine.
Both my main router and the EA6900 were trying to act as a main router.
I found a post about bridge mode and followed the below pasted instructions.
I did find that there were TWO IPv4 listed IP address so make sure you use the IP listed in the IPv4 "SECTION"
    Hope this helps someone else!
Before you set the EA6900 to Bridge Mode, get the IPv4 address settings on the Status (Troubleshooting>>>>>Status>>>>Report), please take note of this. After that, set the EA6900 to Bridge Mode (Connectivity>>>>Internet Settings>>>>Edit>>>>>Bridge Mode). Select “Specify an IPv4 address  “option and then set the IPV4 address that you have had on the router, please try to make sure that you set at least 1 DNS Server. This is one of the workarounds of your concern.

  • [ SOLVED ] Network disappears after a few reboots

I have tried to install Arch twice and both times after rebooting it several times network connection disappears ( i.e., daemon starts ok, but no connection is preset ).
By looking at the error.log, it seems that dhcpcd fails to obtain requested IP address ( nothing specified in rc.conf ).
Is there anything I might be missing or it is a know problem ( saw the same question somewhere else ) ?

  • Small office network questions

I have a small office with 4-5 mac computers. I have a Mac mini set up as a file server and I use a standard cable connection for my internet service. I use a wired router (ethernet cables) all going to a netgear switch.
Just bought a mac mini and a drobo storage device. I have successfully set up the drobo on the mac mini and I can "see" the files and read & write to the external drive. I also have a few other people in the office -- which will need access to the drobo via the network, but have a few questions there:
    1. I don't see the name of the other computers that can connect to the unit. When I get on one of the other machines and look for the drobo I can find it & edit files but from the mac-mini side, I can't see the proper name of the other computer. How do I do this?
    2. Can I limit which folders are accessible within the drobo that attached to the mac mini
    3. Am I missing anything from a safety standpoint? Can Anyone come into my office and access the files that are on the mac/mini drobo? Worse off, is the mac mini vulnerable to the outside world with this setup?
Thanks for the help, new to all this networking stuff.

It's been a week, so i don't know if you have already worked this out, but...
while I am not familiar with your router, when I have used linksys before, i find it better to use static IP addresses for everything.  Try setting static IP addresses and make sure everyone's mask is 255.255.255.0.  Some routers also have a flag to allow computers to see each other.
    Best of luck.

  • [SOLVED] network randomly doesn't work after reboot (e100)

    Hi
Lately I have some weird issues with network. I shutdown computer during night, so basicly I reboot it at least once per day and every now and then without any pattern network doesn't work at all and so far only solution I have found is to reboot (again).
Before anything else I'm sure it's not hardware problem, since other OS on same computer don't have any issues, neither is router since other devices in network from laptops to mobile phones work flawless.
Relevant info and what I have found so far (not everything is copy/pasted so there may be some typos):
    $less rc.conf (network part)
    eth1="eth1 192.168.1.242 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255

So basicly network is dead, can't even ping router, cable connection is detected tho (lights are on). I have tried to restart newtork with /etc/rc.d/network stop/start, nothing. Only clue is dmesg.
    $dmesg

modrope -r e100 and then reloading it doesn't help either, but reboot does (once I had to reboot twice tho).
Anyone with more clue and ideas then me, it's getting really annoying, it also kill whole KDE plasma-desktop for couple of minutes before plasmoids find out network is really down and I'm not really fan of morning "gamble". I can't pinpoint some hard date/update when this started to happening because like I said it's random but last couple of months should be quite accurate. Thanks in advance.
    EDIT: dmesg when network works:

I don't have anything special set at router but I doubt rc.conf play any role. I will try to set it up with dhcp (but I think I have tried that already) if there is any change.
This morning I had to reboot twice, so new kernel didn't help. Fowler, what network card are you using, also e100 (well or some intel)? I dunno, should this be handed to the kernel team? If it will piss me enough one morning I'll just go and buy a new network card, just wanna be sure that will really solve the problem.
UPDATE: OK, this is just silly. I remebered I have acctualy onboard LAN so I edited rc.conf and dived into the dust under my desk to move cable and there I found out it was acctual onboard in use all the time Now this dosen't make much sense to me anymore, when I can't get net up all the stuff in dmesg is e100 related. Anyway, I connected network to e100 and rebooted, suprise, same story. Dmesg reported again link was not ready. I edited rc.conf to
    INTERFACES=(eth0 !eth1)
in case this has anything to do with proper timing at assigning whatever needs to be assigned to network cards at boot so I'm sure just 1 card with all info provided get's kicked in at boot. First reboot after that works, it dosen't prove anything yet but at leat it's some kind of progress in recognising proper cause.
UPDATE 2: Nah, still happens. Googling for "no link during initialization" show a lot of familiar problems, almost all on nforce motherboards and mine is nforce too. I just don't get it why this mess seperate PCI network card. In any case it's extremely annoying.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 VPN Routing/Networking Question

I have a very basic question about Cisco ASA 5505 IPsec Site to Site VPNs.  I want to install a Cisco ASA 5505 at a Data Center, in a LAN subnet that utilizes publicly routable IP addresses.  I would like to install a second Cisco ASA 5505 in a remote branch office as its peer.
Regardless of whether I use publicly routable IPs at the branch office in the "inside" network or non-routable IPs, how would the devices and servers at the Data Center know to route IP packets destined for the branch office back through the Cisco ASA instead of through the default gateway at the Data Center?  I can see accomplishing this if every single device at the Data Center is configured with routing table entries, but that isn't feasible.  It also isn't feasible to use the Cisco ASA 5505 as the default gateway for all of the devices as the Data Center, allowing it to decide where the traffic should go.
What am I missing?  Is the solution to try to map branch office IPs to IP addresses within the Data Center's LAN subnet so that all of the traffic is on the same subnet?

You can do it in several different ways.
One way is to tell the server that if it has traffic to network x then it needs to go to the ASA all other traffic is to head for the default gateway.
In windows this is done via the route command
do not forget to make it "persistent" otherwise the route will disapear when your reboot the server.
    in unix/linux
It is also the route command
Or you can tell your "default gateway" to route that network to the ASA
    Good luck
