[solved] nm-applet does not show up in Gnome panel

Hi all,
I installed networkmanager, network-manager-applet and dbus this afternoon. As well as a fresh install of Gnome. This is all done on my laptop, which my wife wants to use now and then. I always set up the network CLI, but now I will need a nice flashy applet in the Gnome panel.
I managed to run the network-connection-editor as root, and got the network up.
I had some dbus problems when I tried launching nm-applet, but fixed it with a dbus-hack I found in some other thread. But when I now launch nm-applet, it says that there allready is an instance running of nm-applet.
I guess it should show up in the panel, if it is. But I don't see anything there... Do you have any ideas of what I forgot to install/configure/check.
Thanks,
jocom

There have been a couple similar posts recently. I'm not using Gnome anymore or networkmanager, so I don't know if there's a problem with it or not. If I remember correctly I had to install gnome-panel-bonobo, and I believe python-notify and gksu too. You can do a search on the wiki for networkmanager, there is a page for it that explains the configuration changes you'll need to make. Hope it helps.

After importing images from my card using LR 5.4, the GPS data does not show in the metadata panel. However, when I look at the imported images using Bridge, the GPS data is visible. Anybody know why LR is not seeing the GPS data? Camera is Canon 6D.

Ok, the issue seem to be solved. The problem was this:
The many hundred files (raw and xmp per image) have been downloaded by ftp in no specific order. Means - a couple of files in the download queue - both raw and xmps. Most of the time, the small xmp files have been finished loading first and hence the "last change date" of these xmp files was OLDER than the "last change date" of the raw file - Lightroom then seem to ignore the existence of the xmp file and does not read it during import.(a minute is enough to run into the problem)
By simply using the ftp client in a way that all large raw files get downloaded first followed by the xmp files, we achieved that all "last changed dates" of the xmp files are NEWER than the related raw files. (at least not older)
And then LR is reading them and all metadata information has been set / read correctly.
    So this is solved.

An addition - it's looks like in the source that a jsp-file is used that is called "sidebar.jsp". But when I do a search on the harddisk the sidebar.jsp is not there. Is this generated ? Why does not the sidebar menu show up ?

  • [Solved] nm-applet does not display in normal user's panel

I installed Arch Linux yesterday. Today, I am trying to get some of the refinements working. I installed OpenBox as a standalone window manager. I got several things working exactly the way I wanted as root, such as networkmanager, nm-applet, and pypanel. When I startx as root, the nm-applet is properly displayed in the pypanel.
Then I discovered that I could not run an X application as the normal user without first running "xhost +" as root. At this point, it dawned on me that I am not supposed to run startx as root, but as the normal user. Duh!
So, I thought I set up everything the same way for the normal user. When I startx as the normal user, OpenBox runs, nm-applet runs, and pypanel runs, but pypanel does not display the nm-applet icon. I can now run my X application as the normal user, so that is good.
My .config/openbox/autostart file is exactly the same for root and my normal user:
    (sleep 3 && pypanel) &
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
nm-applet was started by this code, because ps -ef shows it running and owned by the normal user:
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep nm-applet
    tim 2311 2306 0 15:27 tty1 00:00:00 /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable
    tim 2332 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep nm-applet
    [tim@(none) ~]$ ps -ef|grep networkmanager
    root 497 476 0 14:14 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action eth0
    root 869 476 0 14:30 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/dhcpcd -B -K -L -G -c /usr/lib/networkmanager/nm-dhcp-client.action ra0
    tim 2345 2327 0 15:27 pts/0 00:00:00 grep networkmanager
Why does pypanel display the nm-applet icon for root but not for the normal user?
Tim (newbie to Arch but previously ran ArchBang for six months)

I have now switched to tint2 from pypanel, anyway. It is much cleaner and easier to use. At least in my opinion.

  • Applet does not show in Netscape browser

I have an upload applet which runs fine within IE over weblogic and it is not showing
              up in weblogic.
The reason is in my opinion is that it is rejecting the certificate automatically
this is my assumption because it loads correctly if i open it up directly and not
              over the webserver
              The message i get is
File transfer is not possible due to insufficient permission or save options

  • My applet does not show in ie.

I did the creating your first applet: (HelloWorld!)
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/win32.html#3
I have done everything here, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q168806 with no luck.
I have selected "JIT complier for virtual machine enabled (requires restart)"
    I am using IE6.
I compiled the .java file using j2sdk1.4.0_01, it compiled fine and I can view the Hello.html (file which shows HelloWorld.class) successfully using AppletViewer.
Other people claim they can see the applet but I cannot. All I see is a gray square (no error messages).
I can, however view all other applets (eg. I played a Yahoo pool applet today).
    Hello.html:
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/hello.html
    HelloWorld.class:
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/helloworld.class
    HelloWorld.java:
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/helloworld.java
(Note: for the .java and .class files please right click and click "save target as" - Otherwise you get a nice little error message ;-))
Someone told me to use jdk1.1.8 to compile my applets them people wouldn't need to download any plugin to view my applet.
When I use this I can view my applet :-D
But still, I would like to know why j2sdk1.4.0_01 doesn't do it right for me.
If j2sdk1.4.0_01 is one of the newest versions then surely it's going to be better!
    Who uses jdk1.1.8 here?
    And is it really better?
Whats the real difference between j2sdk1.4.0_01 and jdk1.1.8?
    Thank you,
    Danny Waddington.
Note: You may have noticed I am new to Java (why else would I do the Hello World tutorial - LOL) so please talk in baby language for me :-)
Not really just try to make it understandable for me.
Sorry if im going on a bit, I'll let you have your say now.
    Thanks again.

I have made the applet again using jdk1.1.8 and it works.(but I still would like to know why it doesn't work with j2sdk1.4.0_01, because j2sdk1.4.0_01 is probably better (it's newer))
    HTML file:
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/Hello2.html
    CLASS file:
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/HelloWorld2.class
JAVA file: (although this is the same as HelloWorld.java)
    http://www26.brinkster.com/abcshoes/java/HelloWorld2.java
I can view this on both, localhost and brinkster server.
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • Nm-applet does not show password promt

I want to use nm-applet for VPN to windows lan.
When I start networkmanager and run nm-applet, I need to provide my ip, gateway and dns server information and save it so networkmanager could work. But as soon as I click "save" button nothing happens. There should be a window of gksudo promt that allows me to enter root password. This is how it worked before at least. Now I don't see the password promt and of course I can't save my settings and use nm-applet.
I'm getting insufficient privileges for nm-applet. when attempting any actions.
    Need help.

  • Network-manager-applet not showing up in gnome-panel

I've installed it, but it doesn't show up in the list of things to add to the panel. Adding the "notification area" item doesn't do it either. What am I stupidly forgetting?

    Um...ps -e | grep "nm" returns this:
    1678 ? 00:00:00 nm-applet
    1730 ? 00:00:00 nm-system-setti
Is there something other than those two that should be running? How would I check?

If you're using ASP JavaScript as the poster in this other
thread, you might be able to use the same technique that I
    suggested as a potential workaround:
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=12&catid=263&threadid =1429140&enterthread=y
A similar technique may work for PHP and ColdFusion as well.

    Hi,
If the machine is brand new I don't see why the serial Number is missing (it is entered on to a special chip at the factory)
However if the machine is a return and has been refurbished then the Logic/mother board may have been changed and someone forgot to put the info back to the new board.

  • [solved] ASUS Zenbook UX305FA -- lsblk does not show harddrive

Hello, I am installing Arch Linux on the recently released Zenbook UX305FA. The reason I specify newly released is because I believe that the hard drive, a 256GB SSD "Micron_M600_MTFDDAV256M", does not have driver support out of the box by Arch Linux. I have reason to believe it does have support by other distros out of the box, as per this happy customer: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2UHFYMBSR … 87-3090311
So yeah, lsblk does not show the hard drive. It just shows my USB as /dev/sda. Any thoughts?
    EDIT:
Please see progress from this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … _does_not/
Basically, if you follow the thread, I realized that turning off secure boot means the hard drive disappears from accessibility. Another thing to note was that it would also be removed from view if it failed to load, which in my case, was due to a messed up partitiioning then file system setup.

Hi, I bought the UX32VD a few weeks ago. Most of the steps, mentioned in the article about the UX31A apply to the UX32VD too. I don't know what your problems are. All the steps are explained.
    [ 8.039202] asus_wmi: Can't find DSTS
Just patch the kernel with the mentioned fix, or use the dkms variant. This will fix the can't find DSTS issue. After that, the asus-nb-wmi (or sth. like that) module will be loaded successfully, which makes most of the function keys work (except the screen brightness keys). The only thing remaining is to use the supplied hackarounds to be able to change the screenbrightness.
After these steps, I created a .Xmodmap to remap the automatic kbd. backlight key and the touchpad disable key to XF86MonBrightnessDown (or so .. can't remember the exact name) and XF86MonBrightnessUp and respectively mapped the shortcuts with xfce4-keyboard-settings (XF86MonBrightnessDown to the command backlight down, XF86MonBrightnessUp to backlight up). Unfortunately, sometimes this is a little bit buggy. The scan codes change randomly on some reboots, eg: one time it gets recognized as XF86MonBrightnessUp, and a few keypresses later as something different.
Hope they fix this issue with the 3.5 kernel, and eventually get the actual screenbrightness buttons to work.
