[SOLVED] No kde-lite ?

Hi,
-#Linux 3.0-ARCH  with kdebase  4.7.0-1 ...
I have successfully installed (the full) KDE, in the past as well as now, so i thought I would give the latest "kde-lite" a spin in Arch.
But, when I try to install the latest KDE minimal install according to:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE
# pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-yourlanguagehere phonon-vlc
You can choose phonon-gstreamer instead phonon-vlc.
-anyway, it just hangs forever, between after the login but just before finishing loading the desktop ?
Also, I notice that "X" process' is running at 99% CPU usage.
Is kdebase/kdebase-workspace not enough for a minimul "kde-lite" installation.? I tried "disabling" composting/compiz in ~/.kde4/..., but to no avail.
Summarily, if I install, for example the full (pacman -S kde), then of course, it installs everything, AND it works ok.
And, please note !: that I also just tested X successfully with a simple startx and xorg-twm,... and everything works just fine. So it ain't a driver/xorg issue
Is it possiby that in Arch, as far as KDE4 is concerned, it's either ALL (KDE4) or nothing ?
thx ahead.
Rick.

wonder wrote:pacman -S kdebase is not minimal enough? then you can install whatever you like
of course pre-installed the usual xorg,..., nvidia,...
  I'm not sure how much of a part these had for a kde-lite, but I installed dbus, mesa, and mesa-demos, then
#pacman -S kdebase kdebase-workspace phonon-gstreamer
I needed both "kdebase, and kdebase-workspace"  for the Plasma binaries, otherwise it hung as I mentioned above ?
So now, with just the above, I have a running kde minimal install,
I noticed however, at 1st glance, that on the application-lancher/kicker , as I move further right, into the "Applications" menu, that the left-positioned  "<" to get back up to top of menu was missing. ?
Possibly some panel widget of sorts is obviously still missing, but no big deal.
All in all, imho, I don't find too much difference in performance versus the much more FULL, but simpler "pacman -S kde".
For now, i'll just get the whole thing, 'cause it works, and then just fine/trim tune your system after, as mentioned by "gerald82"
Needless to say, it was a fun experiment nonetheless.

  • [SOLVED!] KDE 4.11 - Window Manager seems not to be running?

    Greetings,
    I still seem unable to fix the fact that systemsettings will run. However it will run if you do kdesu systemsettings.
    Doing so I started checking around in it and thought I'd look at the desktop effects, when I was greeted with this:
    So, I am guessing that the window borders and buttons are a figment of my imagination....
    This is after me pretty much starting over with KDE, removing the .kde and .kde4 folders.
    Help?
    Edit: That pic seems to not link right. Yay. Basically it says that effects can not be activated or whatever because a window manager seems not to be running. The irony of it is you can see the fact that there are window borders and buttons and such, evidence of a WM...
    I wonder if there is something here that is related to me not being able to run systemsettings... yet systemsettings will run fine in any other environment - including Gnome Shell.
    Another thing, KDE 4.11 ran great in testing and kde_unstable. Once it went to extra, things happened. I find that odd. Maybe something is missing on my end that most archers already have?
    Edit2: fixed image link

    No omeringen, Nvidia user.
    I can try again Thaodan since I've had some updates come through (and weeded out some dot files). Last time I tried I saw OpenGL 2 selected. Trying to change to 3 or anything else also got the screenshot in my OP.
    I'll log into KDE and see if it still does the same, after a brief check for last minute updates.
    EDIT: OK, so I can mark this as solved. I found an odd dot file, who's name excapes me but deals with kde sessions, just sitting around in the home folder. Once I deleted it and restarted, I found that not only System Settings finally ran again as a user, but I could also change and apply desktop effects. Peculiar. I thought that maybe it was a dot file that was causing the problem, that wasn't in the .kde or .kde4 folder. It just took finding it and removing it.
    I wish I knew more to tell, but this at least solves my issue, and the issue with the non-running-as-user system settings I had posted in another thread (thinking that they were separate events. Thanks again for all your help guys!

  • (SOLVED) Two KDE Questions

    1. How do you enable spell check in Kopete? It does not seem to want to check my spelling after I click the spell button or right click and select auto spell check. I checked my system and I do have aspell installed.
    2. How do I get a volume applet on the panel? I have used Kubuntu in the past and there was always a little speaker in the system tray section. This is not present with the current full KDE package which I have installed. How do I add it?
    Thank you so much for your help!
    Question 2 has been solved. Just start Kmix

  • [SOLVED] policykit-kde: "grant" button unclickable

    hi guys!
    i have just installed kde and have a problem with policykit-kde (the policykit configurator). when i attempt to grant a privilege to a user the "grant" button appears greyed out and i can't click it. it happens with any kind of permission. i have googled it but found nothing relevant...
    thank you very much,

    solved by myself. i assumed root could modify just anything, but the assumption proved wrong. for future reference, one must set the right permissions in /usr/share/PolicyKit/policy/org.freedesktop.policykit.policy to be able to change other policykit privileges.
    cheers!

  • Solved! KDE Device Notifier Never Activates

    Sorry for the Newbie question.  I'm an old Gentoo user, but new to Arch.
    I want KDE to present me with a device notifier pop-up whenever I insert a USB disk.  I don't want to automatically mount the device, but I do want to get a notification so that I can mount if if desired.
    Currently, dmesg sees the USB disk, and I can manually mount the USB device, but KDE never seems to know the new device is present.
    Do I therefore still need to follow the instructions in the udev wiki about auto-mounting?
    (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … SB_devices)
    Is there some other setting that I may have missed?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Arch. How are you starting KDE and could you post the daemons from your rc.conf? I'm running KDE and the device notifier does pop up when inserting a USB or any other device. Are you also saying that it doesn't auto-mount also?
    Here's my daemons list, FWIW.

  • [SOLVED] Unstable KDE and GTK

    I'm using KDEmod and it is not as stable as one would have hoped. I think the problem is mainly with GTK since the instability occurs when I use GTK based apps.
    If I use Gimp to edit a photo KDE just crashes after I opened 5 or 6 photos, if I use OpenOffice I get really very sluggish performance. If I execute the same tasks in Fluxbox I have no problems, no glitches, nothing.
    I came across this bug when I noticed something odd if I left my computer unattended (idle for a while with only Firefox running) and came back to find KDE had crashed. Since then it has happened all too often to not give it some serious thought now.
    Could someone give me some advice as to what to reinstall or how to troubleshoot to be sure what the problem is.

    As a sidenote, you will have to deal with any config files in $HOME and other runtime generated files yourself.

  • [Solved] Persistent KDE notifications nag

    Hello. It's my first post on the forums, and I'm sorry if the question is very trivial. I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere on the web.
    The problem is that KDE notifications persist indefinitely even after explicitly dismissing them. An example is suppose I download something in Firefox. I get a notification that it's downloaded. I can do two things. Either I activate it (or click the little x in the corner to get rid of it) or I ignore it. If I activate it, it should go away, right? Well, it doesn't. The notification area shows that I still have a notification. And when I opt to see that notification, it's the one I just activated (or just dismissed), i.e. the completed download in this case. If I activate it (or dismiss it) again, then it goes away for real.
    Now for the second scenario, i.e. the one in which I just ignore it. The notification area shows me that I have a notification. I opt to see that notification and then either activate it or dismiss it. Regardless of what I do, the notification remains there. It's after I activate or dismiss it the second time that it goes away permanently.
    This happens for every notification from every application. Is it a situation faced by anyone else? And if yes, how were you able to change this behaviour?
    Last edited by genghizkhan91 (2013-05-09 13:54:52)

    I've also seen this since KDE 4.10. Notifications can only be completely removed by pulling up the notification widget history and closing them there; closing the notification when it first pops up leaves it in the notification history, which is especially annoying if the notification widget is set to show only when there are outstanding notifications, since you have to dismiss each one twice over.
    This behaviour appears to be the subject of KDE Bug 311413, filed in December; it is confirmed and has a patch, but doesn't list a target release for incorporating the fix as yet.

  • [solved] installed KDE - just one audio output possible

    hey folks,
    i just installed KDE and uninstalled my former XFCE and Gnome.
    i finished configuring my system and now i can only have one audio output at a time.
    i'm using phonon-vlc and alsa. there are known issues or am i doing something wrong...?
    edit: looks like phonon is the problem... clementine and firefox the same time are working...
    Last edited by arcc (2012-02-28 17:43:45)

    i remember having the same issue at one time, but after installing pulse it was ok. i think you have to install alsa-utils as well
    although i never used phonon-vlc, try the phonon-mplayer which is much better in my opinion.

  • [SOLVED] All KDE/Qt windows are missing their menu

    Hi guys,
    Well, as I wrote in the title, Qt/KDE windows like e.g. kwrite, qtcreator, or clementine, they simply don't have their menu anymore after yesterdays kde update. I mean the "File", "View", etc. menus. Usually, I was able to toggle the menus with Ctrl+M, but that just does nothing. And also trying to access the menus with e.g. Alt+F (for the "File" menu) results in nothing.
    What's going on? I couldn't find anything in kdes systemsettings that could be related to this issue. What am I missing?
    I'm using Arch 64Bit with latest KDE.
    Appreciate any help!!

    The latest stable KDE. Removing appmenu-qt actually fixed it, though I don't recall ever installing/using it... wondering why it didn't cause any issues before, but at least it's working again
    Thanks a million arojas!!

  • [SOLVED] X11/KDE: 640x480 is the only one listed

    So I've got X11 and KDE up and running, but the only screen res size is 640x480, which is way too cramped.
    In order of events here is what I've done:
    Initally, I generated an X11 conf using Xorg -configure. I was able to start KDE without any troubles, other than the hideous 640x480 resolution. I found the settings to change it in KDE, but only 640x480 is listed.
    I joined #archlinux/freenode and was told to use hwd -xa (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … uring_xorg), but that didn't work either. The only option is still 640x480.
    Any ideas on how to fix this?

  • [solved] Uninstalling KDE

    Hey there,
    So I played with KDE4 for a while and got sick of it. Just installed Gnome 3 and am looking to uninstall KDE. This is what I'm getting:
    todd ~ $ sudo pacman -R kde
    checking dependencies...
    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: kdeplasma-addons-libs: requires kdebase-workspace
    todd ~ $
    It also errored on ktorrent and gtk-kde4 but I removed those manually. Trying to remove kdeplasma-addons-libs gives me this:
    todd ~ $ sudo pacman -R kdeplasma-addons-libs
    checking dependencies...
    error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-comic: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-lancelot: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-microblog: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-rememberthemilk: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-unitconverter: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-weather: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-weatherstation: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-applets-webslice: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-runners-converter: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    :: kdeplasma-addons-wallpapers-weather: requires kdeplasma-addons-libs
    todd ~ $
    I'm still fairly new to pacman so I'm sure I'm missing something. Any help would be appreciated though. Thanks.

    Disregard. I figured it out, pacman -Rsc kde did the trick

  • [Solved] OSS4 KDE Notifications problem

    After reading a lot of great stuff about OSS4, I decided to give it a shot.  I installed it and parts of it seem to work just fine, but I noticed that a lot of my KDE sounds weren't working.  To make a long story short, for some reason OSS4 doesn't seem to be able to play Ogg Vorbis files on my system.  Is this a problem with OSS4 or is there maybe something else I should be looking at?  I have an extremely fresh install of Arch so I'm not sure what the issue could be if it's mine.
    Thanks!

    Another update, wine works fine too, so I figured I'd look directly at 'play'
    Running play from the commandline gives me a good hint at what's going on:
    ALSA lib confmisc.c:768:(parse_card) cannot find card '0'
    ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such file or directory
    ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
    ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such file or directory
    ALSA lib confmisc.c:1251:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
    ALSA lib conf.c:3513:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such file or directory
    ALSA lib conf.c:3985:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such file or directory
    ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
    ALSA snd_pcm_open error: No such file or directory
    play ao: Could not open default device: error 5
    play soxio: Failed writing `default':
    So it looks like 'play' is trying to use ALSA rather than OSS.  I've been looking around for configuration options of some sort, but nothing seems to be coming up.  Could the package in the repositories possibly have been built without OSS support?  Or is there possibly something else I'm missing?
    Thanks again for the help.
    Edit:  Ok, I've made a custom compiled SOX package that definitely compiled OSS support and it's still doing the same thing >_<
