[SOLVED] No mic capture and weird flash after disabling midi daemon
Hello everyone, I'll jump to the topic:
This morning I installed timidity and the freepats soundfont for timidity. I enabled the timidity.service, listened to some midis and then realized that I didn't have sound playback for everything except the midis.
Having done what I wanted with timidity, I disabled the timidity daemon and rebooted, hoping that the audio playback would work as prior to enabling the said daemon. Playback did work indeed afterwards, but a whole new lot of relevant {?} problems emerged:
The microphone now doesn't work and, goodness me, youtube videos starting from 360p quality, they automatically escalate second by second to reach 1080p
I've tried purging {pacman -Rns} and reinstalling alsa-utils but the problems persist. I will continue tinkering with alsa's config, as capture has in many cases been tricky {I noticed the microphone doesn't work when I connected to a teamspeak channel, if that's of any use}. I post so early mainly due to the youtube problem, for which an online solution is nowhere to be found, possibly because of the multitude of youtube-related problems. I understand this might not be enough info, but I have no idea what else could be useful to you.
Edit: youtube videos don't have sound for the little that the videos play before switching to a higher resolution. Also, after reaching 1080p, the video stops and the usual error message of youtube appears. So, I suppose that this behavior is because flash can't find the playback device.

So, since the rest of the problems were solved with another reinstall of alsamixer as mentioned above, it was easy at this point to track the source of the mic problem. After digging at the mic recording page of alsa: http://alsa.opensrc.org/Record_from_mic I found a clue about having to select the microphone device by pressing the spacebar (rear mic or front mic). It were that easy, and I would have figured it out, if I knew that I had to select one of the two mic devices. So, by switching to front mic, everything is now working. I just don't get why a midi daemon had to cause all this... anyways, thanks for your time reading this.

I dual boot and it's been a while since I last upgraded. I booted into Arch, updated everything, and used the system for a few days before rebooting (perhaps a bad call). I just rebooted today and my login prompt is like this:
((none)) tty1
(none) login:
But my keyboard does nothing. No alt+f* to get to a different terminal, no nothing. I have to hard kill the machine. I've tried twice but would prefer not to do that more than I have to. The second time, fsck didn't work so I booted into the Arch install disk and ran it manually. I tried to chroot into my Arch install and re-run pacman -Syu but got transient server failures. Not sure what all needs to be in place to try and do that, though.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I get the same behavior with arch and arch fallback. I boot to login prompt, not directly to X so it's not anything to do with that, at least not that I would figure.
So far, the only thing I've been able to find is from 2007 (LINK) but it seemed related to X. I'm going to check rc.conf next time I boot up but wanted to see if there's any other suggestions from someone more experience before I boot up again and potentially have to hard kill.

Somewhat embarrassingly, I just found out about manually maintaining *.pacnew files today when researching an unrelated issue. It made me wonder if that was my problem. Perhaps something is goofed in /etc which would explain a ton.
I'm in OS X right now but will reboot shortly and try to fix this issue.
The keyboard issue is troubling as well, though. Some have reported no logins, but often it's a PAM or login manager issue trying to go into X directly. I'm doing no such thing and literally can't get *anything* to work on my keyboard. That makes me wonder...
If I were to boot into the Arch CD and try to run pacman manually... what do I have to do other than
# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
# chroot /mnt
I tried that yesterday but failed. I'm wondering if I have to mount some other items for that to work. /proc? -
[SOLVED]Network Manager Applet and nmcli failing after GCC upgrade
Hi All,
So I went to update my system today and there were only like 8 or 9 updates. Like many other people I had an issue with gcc and pacman. To fix this I ran
pacman -S gcc
Then I ran:
pacman -Su
which updated pacman itself. On reboot though I noticed network manager applet was unable to find any of my network devices despite the fact that network manager was running and I had an IP address. I killed nm-applet and re-ran it and it spewed errors about not being able to connect to network manager. I tried running nmcli and it did the same thing. However, when I run nmcli as root it works. Looking at the arch wiki they suggest you be a part of the wheel and network group which I made sure I was. Everything was working up until I ran those two updates though. Anyone else have this happen or have any idea what is wrong?

EDIT: Never mind - a patch was released for consolekit which fixes the problem.

I have already tried removing the ! and the same thing happened ... but I realised today that I was being automatically connected to "Auto eth0" despite there being no cable present. When automatic connection was disabled on "Auto eth0" my 3G connection (ppp0) connected fine.
Could you clarify that the preferred set-up in the /etc/rc.conf for the interfaces is without the !. The Wiki for networkmanager says to disable them, but then states that some may need to be reenabled with no explanation. The purpose of this confuses me!

I appear to have fixed my problem with the auto connection on the various interfaces by updating my /etc/rc.conf file to:
#Static IP example
#eth0="dhcp"
ppp0="dhcp"
wlan0="dhcp"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(ppp0 wlan0 eth0)
Thus ensuring that I can connect in order of preference.

[SOLVED] Network Manager not working after disabling GDM daemon
Morning All,
1st post so go easy on me.
I have recently setup Arch on a Samsung Q320 notebook, using GNOME DE and enabling gdm. Everything is working fine installed network manager no probs it connects to wireless network each time I login, really impressed with the distro. However I have been playing around with it a bit and when a disable the 'gdm' daemon by prefixing it with '!' in /etc/rc.conf, then reboot then login in with username & pw, and 'startx' GNOME DE starts fine however network manager fails to start, it is still located in the preferences menu I can open it and see the networks I have created previously however cannot join any of them. Can shed any light on the situation.

hello apple guys, after installing OS X Mavericks, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?
So is this the way Apple works now? Not solving customers problems? I'm sure so many users have had this problem. I've had, and I reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Works fine for some days and then several Apple Apps stop working. Is that a way to force us ti update to Yosemite? (I don't want to) and then pay to update some third party programs (i.e. Pro Tools). Also, there are so many 15" MacBooks Pro with graphic problems and of course the guys at the Apple Service Centers always say: "It's the logic board, you can have it replaced, but it's so expensive I would recommend a new Mac". I really, really miss Steve Jobs!

Just noticed that when I close my mail app by double clicking the home button and swiping up it dies something weird. After doing this when I open my mail, instead of showing all my mailboxes it automatically opens one of them instead. Anyone know why?
Just to recap, this is a collection of ports I have collected over time for people who needed this information when setting up the HP ePrint app so that they could view their email from within the app. I am certain other applications also need this information. Although lengthy, I could not find a more comprehensive place to retrieve this information. Feel free to post additional information, faulty information, or other related topics below as this is simply a collection of data and it would be practically impossible to test all of them. after updating to Firefox 7.0.1, menu bar for Google(web ,image,video,map etc),yahoo, Facebook (message,notification,profile,home) and others site are disabled. even I cant log out from different sites cz the log out bar is completely disabled. I tried with Firefox 4;5 and 6, same problem exist . I tried by active all add ons for facebook, same problem exist. If I use internet explorer , I don't find such problem with it.

As I've mentioned above, I was informed that updating to 5.0.1 would '''require''' me to '''delete''' the current version and then install the new one. And doing so will involve losing all my bookmarks. I guess I should have been more specific and detailed there. By losing, I didn't mean losing them forever. I'm aware that they're secured in some place and deleting and installing the software doesn't harm its existence. What I meant that if I install the new version, I'd have to delete the old one. And after installing the new version, I'd have to transfer them (bookmarks) back from wherever they are. Get it? When it updated from 3.6.9 to 3.6.13, and from 3.6.13 to 3.6.18, I didn't need to follow that process. They were already present on their own.
BTW, I'm having no problems with 3.6.18 but after learning about the existence of version 5.0.1, I'm a bit too eager to lay my hands over it.

I've installed CS6 and web Premium on a Mac running 10.9.5, and Dreamweaver,Flash and Illustrator wont launch. All other components work normally. In Activity monitor it says Adobe switchboard failed to respond. Can anyone help solve this issue?

Firefox and Adobe problems after Flash update last night
OK, this is a non-Apple question, but I haven't found any solution yet.
Everyone knows that to run the "Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in, Version 10.1.3" in Firefox, you had to open in 32-bit mode. I did and that plug-in, plus the "Adobe Acrobat Create PDF 1.2" extension worked just fine running Firefox 12. Tonight I got notification that I needed to update Adobe Flash Player. I did (quitting and restarting Firefox after the installation).
THEN up popped a warning - Firefox suggesting that I disable the NPAPI plug-in and finding out here that Firefox was disabling the plug-in. So I disabled it, restarted, etc. Then I found that the Create PDF plug-in would crash if I tried to save a web page as PDF within Firefox.
Is there any way to go BACK to the older Flash plug-in? That seems to be at the root of my problem. I can use PDF Browser plug-in in Firefox to display PDF files but what I really need is the Create PDF extension back (it's strangely absent from Safari - at least I've not been able to find it).
Any help out there?

I can always use the PDF creator "Save as Adobe PDF" that is available from the Print menu and added by Acrobat Pro X, but it does not always save the hyperlinks correctly, etc., where the Adobe Create PDF does a fantastic job... I'd just like to have it back. It does not show up in the Safari extensions/add-ons for some reason.

After update of Nightly to ver 36. appears problem with flash animation/games
Downloaded (from adobe.com) and installed adobe flash player ver.15.0.0.189 appears in list of plug-ins as "Shockwave player 15.0.0.189" - and non flash animation(games) works.
Already uninstall all AD-blocking software, repeatedly restart comp after installation adobeflash - nothing helpsYou got the terms and version wrong in first reply.
The first link is to Shockwave player (not flash) and version is 12.1.3.153
and second is indeed Flash player but at version 15.0.0.189.
The Shockwave player is not used much (and there is not even a plugin for Linux) so don't bother with it. -
I can no longer read PDF files. The window opens and then disappears after a second or two. This began after the last Adobe update. I tried accepting the Adobe terms using Eula.exe but that disn't solve the problem. What do I do?
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself? If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

[SOLVED] Weird behaviour after formatting USB installation media
Hi, I have noticed this weird behaviour with USB drives I used to install Arch linux with. I format them using fdisk and mkntfs but after replugging them in, the udevil daemon mounts them again as ARCH_2013...[something] and even the directory tree exists! This happens also when I use mkntfs without the -f flag (initializing with zeros). I also checked the other files in /dev/sd* in order to make sure that my drive does not appear twice, but there is only sda (my HD) and sdd (or sometimes sdb, sdc,...) which must be the USB drive, also according to dmesg.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I wrote something about not seeing any files when manually mounting but that was my bad, I only tried mounting /dev/sdb1 but mounting /dev/sdb brought me the same files as devmon showed.

You can use this to zero out the entire device:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx bs=8M // x is the letter assigned to the usb drive. Be careful, The dd command is destructive.
It may take a while to zero out the entire disk, depending on the size. After that use fdisk/cfdisk or gdisk/cgdisk to create the partition table and partition.
To create the filesystem type, this one, ext4:
# mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdx // or create a vfat
then create the label:
# e2label /dev/sdx1 USB_STICK_LABEL
Use my suggestion as a last resort. Read the wiki, most of what I have said is in there anyway.

My ipod shuffle 2nd gen suddenly stops playing music after 15-20 mins.First it flashes green light and then flashes red light rapidly. Any solution to this ?
A 2nd gen shuffle is about six year old at this point. The likely cause is a battery that is worn out, with greatly reduced capacity or inability to hold a charge. The initial green light shows a good charge. The red light means the battery is drained.
Since the shuffle still appears in iTunes, you can try doing a Restore in case the cause is related to corrupted software on the shuffle. The Restore button is on the shuffle's Settings screen in iTunes. This will erase the shuffle, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.
Also, when the light becomes red and the shuffle stops playing, try turning OFF the shuffle for at least ten seconds. Then, turn it back ON. This resets the shuffle. Does it play again? If it does, let it play until it no longer plays again. Repeat turning it OFF and ON until it no longer plays. Then, connect it to power and charge it to full. See if that makes any difference.
If that does not help, the solution is to replace the battery. If you have a repair shop do it, the cost is probably uneconomical, compared to the cost of a brand new 4th gen shuffle ($50) that has more features, and a new set of headphones, plus a one-year warranty.
